Chapter Twenty-Five

Kaitlyn leans against Dean after they sit down on the couch. She covers her mouth in a yawn as she watches Seth and Roman walk back in. "Thanks again for helping us," she says.

"No problem," Seth says. "I still say you two are nuts."

"Why?" Dean asks. "I mean other than what we already know."

Seth snorts at that. "Have you seen the size of this place? You two are going to drive each other nuts."

"That's why we told you to keep a room available for one of us. Well, me I'm going to guess." He tugs on Kaitlyn's hair. "This one will be the one kicking me out."

Kaitlyn looks up at Dean. "Just don't argue with me and everything will be fine."

"Right." He kisses the top of her head. "So, pizza?"

Kaitlyn nods as she stands up. "I'll go call." She walks into the kitchen, unable to stop herself from smiling. She'd never thought this would happen. Sure, they both wanted to be in a house, but at least they get to be together. It wasn't worth keeping both places when they were always at one of them. Shane had been great in working with them while they moved Dean's things out of his place.

It's almost midnight when Roman and Seth finally leave. Kaitlyn looks at Dean after locking the door. She watches as he grabs the empty pizza boxes. "So our first night living together," she says.

Dean nods as he looks over. "Second thoughts already?"

She grins. "Never." She follows him into the kitchen. "A little weird, but it really shouldn't be."

"Why is it weird?" He sets the boxes on the counter before turning and looking at Kaitlyn.

"I've never lived with a man before." She shrugs. "It's dumb, especially because we've been practically living together for months now."

He pulls her against him and kisses the top of her head. "It's not dumb. Yeah, we've been living together really, but this is different."

She looks up at him. "How do you feel about it?"

"I feel I need sleep." He leans down and kisses her. "I love you and I love that we're here together. Before you know it we'll have a house."

She slides her arms around him. "Love you."

Dean walks out of the bedroom after getting dressed for work. He grabs his holster from the top of the fridge before heading into the living room to find Kaitlyn on the phone. He glances at the clock as he buckles his holster. "I gotta go, Baby," he says.

Kaitlyn frowns at him before standing up. "Be careful," she says before kissing him.

"I will." He kisses her again. "I'll call you when I'm at dinner."

"You better."

"I always do. I love you. Go back to your phone call."

"Love you too." She smiles at him before sitting down at going back to her conversation.

Dean glances over at Roman as they stop at a stoplight several hours later. They'd been slower than normal, not that either of them would complain about it. However, it's beginning to drive them crazy. They needed something. He's just about to bring that fact up when the radio goes off. Roman glances over when they hear the location of the accident.

"Car 53 on route," Dean calls in.

Roman flips the lights and sirens on as he turns the corner. In the matter of minutes, they're pulling up to the scene. They both climb out and head over to where the two cars are located. Dean looks around as he approaches one of the vehicles. He leans down to look into the passenger side window.

"Everyone okay?" he asks.

The girl in the passenger seat looks at him. "My son," she says through her tears. "He's in the back and I haven't heard him."

Dean nods. "What's his name?"

"Alex."

"Okay. I will check back there. How are you?"

"I'm okay. My neck hurts."

"Okay." He waves over the medics to check on her. "Sir, how are you?"

"I'm okay," the man answers. "Please check on Alex."

Dean glances at the medics as they approach before walking to the back door. He tries to open it but it doesn't budge. He leans down and looks into the window, frowning when he doesn't see anyone. It's then he notices that the other door is open. He runs around quickly but doesn't find Alex. He looks around as he reaches for his shoulder radio. "We have a young boy missing from scene." He starts walking to look for Alex. "Unsure of age, but by looks of back seat, under the age of five. Parents are being attended by medics."

As Dean is approaching the side of the road, he spots a boy curled up on the grass. He walks over slowly. "Alex?" He squats down beside the boy. "Alex, my name is Dean. Can you talk to me and let me know you're okay?"

"Hurt," Alex says.

"Where do you hurt?" He watches as Alex points to his stomach. "Okay, buddy. We're going to take care of you." He grabs his radio again. "Young boy is found. Side of the road. I need medics over here. He's complaining of stomach pains." He stands up and back away only when the medics show up. When he hears one of the men mention the kid being dumb to leave the car, he steps closer again. "Leave your comments to yourself and make sure he's okay." He walks around, squatting beside Alex once again. "Alex, how old are you?"

Alex looks at Dean. "Five."

"You should've stayed in the car," the medic says.

Dean glares at him. "If you aren't going to do your job, then go find someone who will." He looks at Alex again. "Alex, just try to relax, okay?"

"I want my mommy."

"Okay, we'll get you to her as soon as we can." He looks at the other medic.

"Alex, my name is Zack. I'm going to roll you onto your back, okay? I need to take a better look at your stomach." He rubs Alex's back. "We'll go slowly. Ready?"

Alex nods, whimpering as Zack rolls him over carefully. He lets out a cry of pain. Zack glances at Dean.

"You did good, buddy," Dean says. He nods at Zack. "Here, take my hand. Squeeze as much as you want." He takes Alex's hand as Zack lifts the bloodied shirt up. He listens as Zack tells the blond man, Swagger, what he needs.

"Okay, Alex, this is going to sting. But we need to clean the scratch on your stomach. So squeeze Dean's hand as hard as you can, okay?"

Alex nods. "Okay." He cries out again.

Dean rubs Alex's arm with his free hand. "It's okay," he says.

"We're done with that," Zack says. "Great job." He tapes the gauze over the gash. "We're going to get you into the ambulance."

"With my mommy?"

"I can't promise that one. We'll have to see how Mommy is." He grabs the backboard.

Dean follows them over to the ambulance. "Keep your partner away from him," he says looking at Zack.

Zack nods. "He's not always an ass hole. Thanks for the help."

"No problem." He looks at Alex. "Alex, I'll go see where your Mom is." He walks over to where Roman is standing with some of the other passengers who weren't injured. "The woman from the Taurus, where is she?"

"Being evaluated over there," Roman says pointing to one of the ambulances.

"Thanks." He turns to head toward the ambulance, but Roman stops him.

"Wait." He leans in and whispers into his ear.

Dean's heart nearly stops. "Please tell me that's a sick joke," he mutters.

Roman shakes his head. "It's not. Just thought you should know. You'll be passing it."

Dean nods. "Thanks." He heads over toward the other ambulance and just as Roman said, he sees the scene to his right. His heart breaks when he hears the cries of the woman standing just to the side. He stops when he reaches the other woman.

"My son…"

"Alex is safe. He has a gash on his stomach. He is being taken to the hospital. I told him that I would come see how you were. He's scared, but very brave."

She smiles. "Thank you for finding him."

"Just doing my job, ma'am." He looks at the medic. "How is she?"

"Neck soreness, but nothing serious. Cuts and bruises. She got lucky. Her husband has a broken arm, but he's okay overall too."

Dean nods. "Will she be able to ride with her son?"

"Of course. Just keep the brace on for the ride."

Dean climbs into the car after they finally get everything cleaned up. He runs a hand over his face. "She was twenty," he says softly.

Roman looks over. "I heard," he responds. He sighs. "Dean…"

"I just don't understand."

"Me neither. Call her."

"No, I can't." Dean shakes his head. "I just…" He pulls his phone out of his pocket. "I hate days like this."

"Same here."

"Go, I'm good."

When Dean gets home after his shift, he walks into the bedroom. He leans against the doorjamb as he watches Kaitlyn sleep, the light from the TV the only way he can. He walks over to the bed. Leaning down, he kisses her temple before heading back out of the room to go about his usual routine.

A short time later, he climbs into bed. He's surprised when Kaitlyn turns and looks at him. He shifts and pulls her into his arms. "What are you doing up?" he asks.

"You had a bad shift," she says.

He frowns but nods. "Yeah."

Reaching up, she slides her fingers through his hair. "I love you."

"I love you." He kisses her softly before finally breaking down. He's not sure what she does to pull this side of him out. "All I could think about was that could have been you."

Kaitlyn curls her fingers into Dean's hair. "Oh, Baby. It's okay." She presses a soft kiss to his cheek. "It's okay."

"I can't lose you, Kaitlyn."

"You won't. I'm right here." She shifts a little and kisses him softly. "I'm right here."
