Chapter 25

*Sam's POV*

First Day Back

"We were off of school property, and it had nothing to do with school." I said as me, mom, and James sat in the office along with Rachael and her dad.

"I understand that Sam, but it still was a fight between two of my students, so Rachael's father has every right to be concerned." Principal Franklin said back.

"No I am passed concerned. This girl attacked my daughter for no reason what so ever. We want her expelled from school." Her dad said. Unlike me, Rachael went home and bitched to her parents that I kicked her ass for absolutely no reason. More of, she was innocently at an outing with her friends, and I just attacked her.

"Mr. Higgins, I understand your concern, but I just can't expel, Sam for something that happened on the girls own merits outside of the school." He said back to them.

"Well suspend her then." He replied back.

"Legally, considering they both threw punches." James stated pointing to a red scratch I had on my left cheek. "He would have to suspend them both."

"Mr. Foster has a point. They were both involved and whether it was self defense or not, I would have to suspend both of them." Principal Franklin said back.

"Because, that measly little scratch on her cheek. My daughter had to go to the hospital for a possible broken jaw, she has multiple scratches, and a bite on her hand." He said. I smirked, which quickly disappeared when Franklin turned and looked at me.

"Sam, is this true?" He said.

"Damn straight it's true." Mr. Higgins said.

"Well she was pushing my face into the ground, I had to bite her." I said back.

They all shook their heads. "Even so, they both would still have to be suspended." Franklin finished.

"Fine, we can't get justice here. We'll just have to seek it through the court system." Mr. Higgins stated.

"Oh, I wish you hadn't said that." James said pulling out his briefcase. "I'm afraid sir if you decided to take this to court; I'm going to have to bury you."

"And, how do you plan on doing that?" Mr. Higgins asked turning to face James, who had now stood up.

"These are all witness reports," he said pulling out at least twenty papers. "They all state that my daughter had no wishes to attack your daughter until your daughter called her out, along with some other things. You can look through them." He finished pushing them towards him.

Rachael's dad scoffed. "I don't give a rat's ass what theses say, your daughter still attacked my daughter." He said.

"Well, let's talk about the baring of false witness, because that will be exactly what happens if your daughter takes the witness stand and tells the bogus statement she gave Principal Franklin just now." James said. I love when he goes all lawyer.

"What the hell are you talking about?" He asked him.

"You see my daughter may be a lot of things, but a liar isn't one of them, and as the courts know she always admits what she has done in the past." My dad said as he walked around to stand in front of Mr. Higgins. "According to my daughter and all those witness reports you refuse to read, your daughter was not out on a friendly outing with her friends. No, she was two hours away at a cabin, where a party with underage drinking was being held."

Mr. Higgins picked up the witness reports and started skimming through them. "If that still hasn't changed your mind, your daughter and her friends were the people who threw the party, which will open up all sorts of legal action, such as how were they able to purchase the alcohol and the fact that your daughter was very intoxicated, which as you see is also stated in the witness reports." James said.

"It also says that your daughter was drinking to." Mr. Higgins stated trying to call James bluff.

"Oh I know, and she has been dealt with, but my point is if we take this to court you won't see a dime from us due to all the holes in your daughter's story. And, with me representing the opposing side they will see EVERY hole in her story." James said.

Mr. Higgins stood up and debated whether or not to argue with the cool and calm Mr. Foster. Finally, he let out a deep breath. "Fine, I'll let this go, and settle it here." He said turning towards Principal Franklin, who was obviously impressed.

"What do you suggest Principal Franklin?" My mom asked.

"Well, since this was an outside event. There isn't much to do." He said taking out his pen and detention slips. "However, since it was brought to my attention and both parties feel that something should be done. I am giving both of you one week of detention, and a warning that if anything gets out of hand with you two this semester you both will be suspended indefinitely. Which means you will not walk at the graduation ceremony." He warned us. "Are we clear?"

"Yes sir," I said with a salute.

"Detention, that's so not fair. I have cheer practice its basketball season. Daddy…" Rachael whined with a pout.

"I think you should be happy that's all you're getting for now. As for cheer, you won't have to worry about practice for the first few games after I finish talking to your coach." Her dad said crossing her arms.

"Daddy, you wouldn't," She continued to whine. "You said you would solve the problem not make it worse."

"I suggest you stop talking right now young lady, and get your behind to class. We will discuss the details left out of your tall tale this afternoon when you get home." He said before exiting the office with a short head nod towards everyone.

Rachael groaned before following him out. I looked back at my folks who were still shooting daggers at me. They had been since they got the phone call Friday morning that we had a meeting with them this morning. I had to fess up to the whole thing, with the exception of Mel getting shit faced drunk. I left that part out.

I said bye, to them and got the fifteen minute "you should know better" lecture from Principal Franklin then headed to my locker to get ready for my first period class.

I heard someone clear their throat behind me as I was putting my stuff into my locker. I turned and was surprised to see the one and only Freddie standing their.

"Freddie, hey," I said turning around and looking at him. I felt a little awkward me and Freddie's relationship pretty much became non-existent after the break up we had barley said two words to each other since all that Jonah drama.

"Hey… Sam," He said back. It fell silent between us as I rocked on my feet.

"How have you been," I managed to choke out just to break the silence.

"Good, thanks for asking." He said back. "Look, I just came to check on you. Emma told me about the party, the fight, and the picture culprit."

"Yeah, I'm fine Freddie; at least I was after I beat Rachael to a pulp." I said with a laugh.

"Yeah, there are pictures on Gibby's Splash face." He laughed back. "What do you think about all of it?"

"I think Rachael's a bitch, who really should be in the hospital right now, but it's whatever." I answered back. Part of me knew that wasn't what he meant, but I wasn't ready to talk about the kiss that started all the drama. After all, he still kissed her.

"Yeah," He said.

"Yeah," I said back. It fell silent again.

"What did your parents say?" HE asked.

"I'm grounded for a month and two weeks." I answered.

"A month and two weeks," He questioned.

"A month for drinking, one week for fighting, and one week for taking my 'perfect' sister to a party that contained alcohol." I answered. Freddie laughed and shook his head. "Yeah, it would've been longer, but I left out the fact that I got Mel drunk."

"Whoa, you got the so called sweet, prefect, Melanie drunk?" He laughed.

"Yeah," I laughed. "You should've seen her first shot. She held it in her mouth for like three minutes. Then when she finally took it down we gave her a beer to chase it, and she drunk the whole damn thing. It was great." I finished.

"Wow, well what did she think?" He asked.

"Um, after throwing up most of the night, and waking up hung-over, she hates it. She said she's never drinking again." I said. "I told her she shouldn't have told me she wanted to learn how to be a rebel."

Freddie shook his head. "She wanted to rebel?" He said.

"Yeah, well that's a long story. In a nutshell my parents are a bunch of assholes that drove us crazy at Christmas." I said.

"Oh yeah, Carly told me your whole family was spending Christmas together." He said. I nodded my head. "Shame I couldn't hear it from you." He said causing me to wander where this conversation was going.

"I miss you Sam." He said causing my heart to drop and I gulped. "I mean, I miss our friendship."

I breathed easy, but I felt a little tear in my heart. This was the first time in two months that we had a full conversation. Six months since we had a full conversation that didn't involve arguing.

I smiled. "I missed you too, friendship wise I mean." I said. "It was just so hard at first."

"Well, what about now." He said scooting a little closer to me.

I felt my heart stop for a split second, but I smiled. "I want to be friends. I miss us being friends. I hate the fact that our friends feel torn between us, and I don't want that anymore." I said.

He smiled. "Me too," He said. Before coming a little closer and pulling me into a hug. I felt my legs try to turn into jello as I took in his sweet smell. I quickly pulled back and smiled just as the bell rang for us to head to class.

"May I have the honor of walking you to class?" He said holding out his arm.

"Um, what about your girlfriend?" I asked. We all had first period together.

He shrugged. "She told me to come and talk to you." He said still holding his arm out towards me. I nodded and took it.

Just as we were about to walk off I looked down and noticed no books. "Shit," I said turning around and putting my locker combination in. I reached up to the top shelf in my locker; where I only put the stuff I don't really care about at.

"Um, what's that," Freddie asked.

"What," I said as I continued to reach.

I felt his hand graze my skin and I shivered. "Oh yeah, that's my tattoo." I said looking down at the small part that hung out of my jeans.

"When did you get that?" He asked.

"Christmas Eve, after my parents pissed us off, Mel decided we should go do something that would piss them off." I said.

"So, you got tattoos… even Mel got one." He asked.

"No, Mel got her belly button pierced." I said.

"WHOA, REBELLION AT IT'S FINEST!" He said in excitement. "I bet your parents were pissed."

I laughed. "At me yes they were, but Mel chickened out and didn't show them." I said. "I figured we would take this in baby steps." I said back.

He nodded his head "So, what does it say?" He asked nervously.

I looked around the hallway, and pulled my jeans down enough so he could read the small inscription that graced my pelvic bone area.

"Love like you've never been broken." He read out loud.

"Yeah, I wanted to get something meaningful. That I wouldn't regret when I turn eighty years old and wrinkly all over," I said. He nodded his head. "To be honest, I have you to thank for this."

Freddie looked at me confused. "If it wasn't for you I would still be lonely in a world full of people who care about me. I wasn't able to love past my shattered heart until you taught me how." I said with a smile.

"Glad I could help." Freddie said with a smile.

"Yeah, just promise me you will remember one thing." I said, trying hard to make light of what felt like was turning into a heavy conversation situation.

"What," He asked.

"Although you and Emma make such a fine couple, I will always be the best you've ever had." I said slightly pushing him before taking his arm and walking towards class.

Freddie threw his head back and laughed. "Wow, okay I'll let you believe that in Puckett World." He finished.

"In every world Benson, or do I have to remind you about Valerie." I said.

He laughed. "I call bullshit. You can't add her into the running." He said as we made our way to the classroom.

"Um, you don't have much to compare to Nub," I reminded him.

"Touché Puckett, Touché," He finished shaking his head.
