Chapter 25 The Homecoming

Despite talking to Rebekah about how she wanted nothing to do with Klaus Caroline found herself getting little gifts from him like she had the first morning after they had talked. She found it disconcerting. She didn't know what she was supposed to do with the little gifts he gave her. Some of them were jewelry, more flowers, chocolates, pieces of artwork, little notes, and she even found a dress that must cost a fortune. She didn't know what to make of the little gifts, but she continued to receive them and she kept them in her living room only opening to see what else he sent and then wrapping it back up. She kept meaning to go to the Boarding House, but the way Rebekah had looked at her and the way Klaus made her feel kept her from going.

What she really wanted to do was concentrate on getting her memories back. Now that she knew about her past she wanted to find this Mikael person and see if he would fix what he had done. Granted she knew that he probably wouldn't because he was bad and everything, but she figured she could at least try.

She was glad for the escape in school however teaching made her feel wanted and controlled. She followed the lesson plan she had made and continued to find solace in teaching the students until her days were done and she had to go home. Each night as she went home was when she found the gift that was left and each night she put it in the rapidly growing pile.

On the second week of this happening she found it odd that Elena and her little gang of supernatural entities had not been in school for the past few days, but then she'd heard Elena's aunt Jenna died and she figured her absence was because of that.

On the last day of that week it was a full moon and she noticed that there was no present left for her when she came home and maybe that's what encouraged her to call Damon. The lack of a present left on her porch made her feel like something was wrong or maybe she was growing used to the adoration.

"Blondie!" Damon exclaimed when he picked the phone up.

"Is your brother still in town?" she asked curiously.

"With his little wife and brother." He said too lazy to use names.

She sighed thinking Niklaus had given up and for some reason that bothered her more than she'd admit.

"Is there something you needed, Blondie?" he asked.

"No." she said before hanging up and relaxing into her couch. She stared out the window for a long time before getting up and grabbing a blood bag and then sinking into her bed. She had papers to grade, but she was tired and looking to go to sleep early. It was the weekend after all.

She closed her eyes without another thought of the lonely existence she was enduring. She knew when she awoke she'd be ok. She would spend some time in her garden, grade some papers, and maybe watch a movie. She was ok with her life, she was happy, but sometimes she wondered if it was enough. She wondered if she had rushed to push Niklaus away before she got to know him, but before she could contemplate that idea she fell asleep.

She dreamed of a room with a bed. She lay in the bed staring at the ceiling as if she was waiting for someone. There was a red dress on the floor of the room and instead of looking like a modern bedroom it had stone floors and walls. There was no carpet and the bed was made of straw.

"Lord Niklaus is here." A woman said peeking her head into Caroline's room.

Caroline sat up and pulled the red dress on. It was a revealing gown for such a time and Caroline felt uncomfortable in it.

"Caroline." A British voice purred coming into the room. He looked dashing in his old fashioned get up. She smiled at him and beckoned him closer.

"You have been the only thing on my mind for days, sweetheart." He breathed his eyes raking her still clothed form.

She blushed and looked away, "but why, milord? We didn't do anything except talk." She said.

"Exactly, you don't know how long it's been since I only conversed with someone and I actually found myself enjoying it. Tell me about your birthday." He demanded his hands grazing her sides.

Her blush grew and she shifted in his arms. "It was alright. The girls bathed me and gave me a new dress and…I was given to a man so he could…train me to become like the others." She stuttered looking away again.

"Like the others…" He mumbled bringing her close so he could kiss her. He lay a tender kiss upon her and then another as she welcomed his advances. He led her towards the bed and gently pushed her down as his hands wandered across her body suddenly she felt tightening on her wrists as if something was chaining them down.

"Wha—" she began and suddenly awoke.

It took her a moment to understand where she was, but when she realized she wasn't in her bedroom she began to struggle against the chains that were around her wrists and feet.

"Hello!" she shrieked looking around the room she was in. It was a bedroom and she sat atop it chained like an animal.

"Hello!" she yelled again.

Suddenly the door opened and a tall brunette man walked in a suspiciously eerie smile on his face.

"Caroline." He stated a familiar tone to his voice.

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Do I know you?" she asked confused.

"You did." he mused walking closer to her.

She stared up at him not knowing if he was dangerous or not. Since she didn't technically have a memory anyone could be dangerous to her.

"Who are you?" she asked finally as he stared down at him.

"Mikael at your service." He said smirking and giving a little bow.

She cringed the words Rebekah had spoke coming back to her in full force.

"Don't be afraid, darling, I'm not here to hurt you." he said giving her a dark smile.

"Then why am I chained to a bed? Just entertainment?" she snapped.

He smirked, "you're more biting than the last time we met. And perhaps. I'm still waiting to execute my plan." He said.

She frowned, "what plan? What are you going to do with me?"

"Tomorrow night you'll see." He said giving her a malicious grin before suddenly lunging forward and twisting her neck. He needed her unconscious until he could execute his plans for tomorrow.

The Homecoming Klaus had told Tyler Lockwood to do was in full swing. The only thing missing was a beautiful blonde on his arm. When he had gone to Caroline's house earlier to see if she wanted to accompany him he found it empty, which was odd, but not worth worrying over. He knew that Caroline wasn't the same person just like he wasn't the same person, but that didn't mean he didn't want to try again. On the contrary he wanted very much to try again he thought that this time they could work. He had finally become his goal, the Hybrid. After breaking the curse he was able to use the doppleganger's blood to make others like him. As long as he played by the rules Elijah, Damon, and Katarina had set up he was free to do whatever it was he desired with the doppleganger's blood. He had broken the curse, created his hybrids and the last thing he had to do was get Caroline to fall back in love with him and everything would be perfect.

Everything seemed to be according to plan until Mindy one of his hybrids came up to him as he talked with Rebekah and Stefan.

"You're father's here. He says he has a little present." Mindy said interrupting a story Stefan was telling.

The air seemed to still around the three of them. Klaus looked at Stefan and then at Rebekah his jaw clenched.

"Is this a joke?" Klaus snarled grabbing Mindy's throat while looking at Stefan and Rebekah.

"Why would we joke about this?" she shrieked grabbing Stefan's arm in fright.

"Where is he?" Klaus growled shaking Mindy by the throat.

"Front." She gasped out as he dropped her to the floor and he began to summon the Hybrids. He went for Tyler first.

"Gather the Hybrids there's trouble." He said shortly going to the front while Rebekah ran to get Elijah and Damon who were in the backyard with Katarina and Elena.

Klaus walked to the front of the house with Stefan at his back ready to fight for him. Klaus grabbed the handle of the door and swung it open to reveal Caroline standing before him.

She stared at him not knowing what to say and he stared back at her just as astonished.

"Where's Mikael?" he asked not moving his gaze from Caroline.

She opened her mouth wanting to respond, but was unable to as the source of her silence appeared behind her a stake coming to rest at her heart.

"There's my boy." Mikael said smirking at Klaus over Caroline's shoulder.

"Let her go." Klaus said glaring at Mikael's arms wrapped around Caroline.

"Not just yet. I have a little surprise for you." Mikael said.

"Let her go!" Klaus growled.

Mikael laughed. "Perhaps later. I want you to suffer for what you've done! The monster you've become is an abomination! I want to destroy you!"

"You don't control me anymore." Klaus growled taking a step forward.

Mikael smirked, "Ah yes the curse you've finally figured out how to break it, but the one thing you've forgotten is that I know where your fear is Niklaus. You create these toys to follow your rules, but don't forget I'm older than you, stronger than you and have more followers than you because people like me. They respect me I have loyalty and you have…nothing." He said smirking as he saw the vulnerability in Klaus's eyes. Suddenly Mikael turned to Caroline dropping the stake.

"I'll show you how little you have, Niklaus. I took away your great love just like you took away mine." Mikael said before look Caroline in the eye.

"Remember everything I took away." He compelled turning her back around to face Klaus.

As millions of memories rushed into Caroline's brain she felt her knees buckle at the impact. She fell forward on the threshold of the house the air being knocked out of her. She looked up slowly tears in her eyes as they searched for Klaus's who stared down at her with such love it broke her heart.

"Nik." She whispered wishing that they could be together one more time before she was killed by his father.

"Now here's the real choice Niklaus. Do you watch your wife die or do you come out to die like a man and not like the coward you are?" Mikael asked a smirk on his face.

Klaus's face morphed as he lunged at his father without thinking. All of the pain and angry he had felt for centuries were unleashed upon his father and the hurt he felt because of what he thought happened to Caroline. Caroline was the icing on the cake of pain and now that he could focus his anger and was the best version of himself he could focus all of his power on killing his father.

As his father tried to best him Stefan ran out of the house a white oak stake in his hand. He watched as Klaus and his father traded punches and kicks and right at the perfect moment Stefan threw Klaus the stake and within a millisecond it was within Mikael's back.

Mikael stared at his son and fell to his knees feeling his centuries old body finally decaying and being put to rest. "You have always been a disappointment." Mikael said before finally letting out his final breath and dying at Klaus's feet. Mikael's followers looked at each other before Klaus's hybrids descended on them the way rabid dogs descend on prey.

Klaus turned around and left swiftly going to Caroline who was still on her hands and knees focusing on breathing as she regained her memories. He stood beside her for a moment hesitantly leaning down and touching her back. She stiffened under his touch and she flashed to a standing position beside him. She straightened her back and looked him right in the eye.

"Are you ok?" he asked looking into her pure blue eyes and then letting his own rake her body.

"Peachy I was just kidnapped." She bit out brushing her clothes off. She looked into the house seeing Rebekah, Elijah, Damon, Katarina, Elena, and Stefan staring at her.

"Do you want to come in?" Klaus asked gesturing to the Lockwood mansion.

Caroline looked away not knowing what to do.

"We should talk." He added quietly reaching a hand to touch her chin lightly.

She moved away from him and shook her head wrapping her arms around herself.

"I think I just want to go home." She said quietly.

"Caroline we should really talk. There's so much—"

"Nik I just almost died and I just got about 500 years of memories back. I want to go home." She said sharply.

Klaus nodded slowly taken aback by her sharp tone. "Well then I'll come see you tomorrow."

"Fine." she said before turning and walking away back to the little house she had called home until she'd gotten her memories back. She couldn't help, but think that the people she was walking away from were more of a home then the little niche of life she'd built for herself, but she'd think about that after she took a hot bath and cuddled into her pajama's and cried herself to sleep as all of the memories good and bad reminded her of who she had been and currently now was.

(A/n: Annnnnd her memories back, but now what? Next chapter Klaroline talk about everything, but can klaus win her back? Let me know what you think! Please review! Like I said there will be almost 5 chapters left at least 3. Eh idk if that makes sense. We'll see how it goes.)
