Chapter 25
Never had a door been so intimidating.
After being brownnosed by Riku for the past twenty four hours, Naminé finally worked up the valor to come back to the mansion.
Who knew that the simple act of standing in front of a door would take away the balance in her calm poise? She hesitated to knock on that door. She didn't want to have to confront Roxas—she didn't want to have to tell him that she had moved on. What good could come out of it?
Still, Roxas deserved to know the truth. It might be hard for him handle reality, but he'll be devastated if she attempted to keep the truth cold from his acknowledgement. Lying to him would make things worse in the outcome. Only the sneakiest can shadow a secret forever, only the most dexterous mentalities can flip, dip, and duck around inevitable truths that were bound to wind up in the air somehow. Naminé was far from dexterous in that consent.
She decided it would be best to just get it over with. Besides, she and Riku were leaving Destiny City tomorrow, and she had to get her things packed up before then.
She wondered how the others would react to her return. She hadn't heard from any of them at all yesterday. She saw a couple of posters with her picture on them posted around town on her way here. That pretty much answered her question. Now she had to pray she didn't get hit with a stampede of warm welcomes by familiar faces. She honestly wanted to just pack her things and go, but not out of disrespect, she just didn't want to be reminded of her inequities. If only there was a way to get in there while being inconspicuous.
Naminé decided to quit stalling and just knock on the damn door. She patiently waited for an answer. She knocked again.
The door opened. She expected someone like Yuffie or Wakka to answer, but it ended up being—
"Naminé!" Xion was shocked. She expected it to be Roxas. She ran up to the blonde and shrouded her into her arms. "I'm so glad you're okay! We were worried sick about you!"
The term awkward didn't do this situation justice. Here Naminé was, being hugged by the girl who ruined everything for her. If it weren't for this chick, Naminé wouldn't have run away in the first place. This whole thing was her fault.
And Roxas' too, but she'll deal with him later.
Xion noticed Naminé not hug her back. She quickly released her and took a step back, noting the girl's uncomfortable expression.
"Sorry…"
"No, you don't have to apologize. I won't be staying here for long."
The blonde entered the mansion as Xion shut the door behind them. She examined the area; it looked the exact same as she left it. Although to her surprise, it was a lot less animated than she expected it to be. Her friends were a coup of colorful personalities. She would have expected at least some sort of chaos ensuing.
"Where is everybody?" Naminé asked while looking around for any sign of her friends.
"Gone."
That caught Naminé's attention. She whirled her head around to face the raven head. "Gone?" she repeated.
"Sit down, Naminé. We need to talk."
She couldn't agree more. The two sat in the living room on the couches, with both across from each other. The only thing that separated them was a resting table.
Xion broke everything down. She told Naminé about what happened to Sora and Aerith at the stadium medical room. The hairs on Naminé's skin began to get aroused, and not in the good way. She had no idea what kind of horrible truths occurred during her absence. She was beginning to fear for Sora's life.
"So, they all left huh?" Naminé said as Xion finished her story.
Xion nodded in response. "Mm."
"Are Sora and his mother going to be okay?"
"I haven't heard from them yet. Hopefully, he'll be alright. Your sis was so worried."
Not that she was surprised. "What about Roxas? How's he holding up?"
"He was mortified. Not only did he lose you, but his brother went into some kind of weird, coma thingy. I can't imagine what kind of pain he must be going through."
Naminé didn't want to think about that. Sympathizing with Roxas would only lead to her forgiving him, and she did not plan on doing that any time soon. Forgiveness had to be earned. She shouldn't have brought his name into the atmosphere.
Still, her curiosity continuously popped the questions right out of her mouth. She had a hard time believing that Selphie would leave the whole mansion to Xion only. That didn't seem right. Someone else had to be here with her, somebody who Selphie could trust without a doubt. She just prayed it wasn't him.
"Did he leave too?"
"He's still here."
Damn it.
Subconsciously, she knew the answer; she just didn't want any confirmation.
"And you're with him too?"
"Yes."
"Alone?"
Xion directed her eyes elsewhere.
"I should've known," Naminé muttered. Of course he would start a new relationship behind her back. Perhaps they were even, then.
"It's not what you think," Xion protested. "Roxas and I haven't done anything. As a matter of fact, we stayed here because we wanted to look for you."
"Is that so?" Naminé scoffed. "You expect me to believe that you two were alone for a whole night and didn't do anything?"
It was at that moment that Xion realized that Naminé had no reason to trust her. Xion and her twisted emotions is what made her kiss Roxas. If not for that, the issues with a pulsation of tension present in this room would not exist.
"Look, I know that we aren't on the best terms right now…"
Naminé could drink to that.
"But you've got to understand, you're the only girl Roxas sees. He could barely sleep these past few days because he was so worried. He wouldn't eat, he'd barely come out of his room, he felt awful about the whole thing. He spent the majority of his time looking for you."
Naminé still looked skeptical.
"Listen—I like Roxas. I do. I won't lie to you about that. But if his heart belongs to someone else, then I wouldn't jeopardize his happiness like that. That night you saw us kissing, it was me who kissed him. Roxas had no intention of doing something like that to you behind your back, he's crazy about you!" She chuckled. "Honestly, I'm a little jealous. You should have seen how upset he was when we went putting up posters for your absence yesterday. He was losing it, because he couldn't believe he had to do it at all. So don't be mad at Roxie, it wasn't his idea or his intention—it was mine. I'm not proud of it… but… please, just understand. I'm not good at explaining things."
Naminé looked a little more understanding, but Xion wasn't the one she needed to be talking to right now. She placed a hand on Xion's shoulder.
"I… I understand… Xion." A soft smile appeared on her lips. Xion returned the favor. "But I think I need to talk to Roxas. Where is he?"
"He's out looking for you right now. I don't know when he'll be back."
Naminé pulled out her cell phone. "Don't worry, I got him."
...
Kairi felt like crying herself to death.
How could he have forgotten her? After all they had been through; the moments they shared, the words traded—she figured their bond was too close for it to be ripped clean from them. But here she was, alone with a boyfriend who literally had no idea who she was. She hadn't met his curious eyes since the day they met, and it was unsettling to see them again.
She could note the slight paranoia in his cornea. She knew that when she first met him, he was never quick to trust anyone. It felt like he was saturating her once again with that same feeling—a feeling from him she didn't even consider she'd feel again.
He recoiled on his bed slightly. She noticed the fear in his eyes.
She had to remember, Sora had never seen her before in his life. At least, he didn't remember. She had to be sensitive to how he was feeling right now. As much as she wanted to lash out and tell him all about their past, present, and hopeful future together, she had to play along. She had to convince him that everything was okay. If she told him the truth, he'd probably freak out and wouldn't believe her regardless. The simpler the story would mean the increase of the likelihood that Sora would believe it.
Sora would never believe any of the stories of his recent past in any case. He had been through some bizarre scenarios lately, ranging from getting his ass kicked by a collective of henchmen dancers to being sucked into a computer program made by her very own fan club. What kind of stranger would believe that?
She figured she might as well keep the details uncomplicated and convince him with a colorless lie.
Sora gulped, wetting his desiccated throat. "Um… h-have we met before?"
Kairi lets a sigh escape her as she held back her tears, giving the boy a smile induced with touches of melancholy. "Yes, we have. My name is Kairi Lockhart. We're—friends. Just friends."
Note to self: Kill yourself when this is all over.
She felt like she was breaking up with him. Kairi wanted to keep the fact that they were actually a couple out of the air. He'd probably mistake her for some kind of psychotic stalker chick if she said that.
To be honest, it hurt a great deal to say that. All the repressed memories silently batted her in the heart obstinately.
"We are?" he asked. Last time he checked, he had no friends.
"Yeah, uh—you ended up getting hit in the head pretty badly at gym the other day and you were out cold for like three days. My mom is a doctor, so she helped treat your injuries. She said you might get some memory loss…"
"Ngh, the first day of school is tomorrow, right?"
She shook her head as she sat on his bed. "I can't believe your memory went back that far."
Sora rubbed his temples. "Me neither. So what day is it? Is it still 2013?"
"December 23, 2013."
Sora never thought losing memories like this would be so frustrating.
"So I've been out for four months?" The thought was jarring. How could something like this happen? Sora was beginning to think this unfamiliar chick was fast talking him.
"No, you've only been out for three days. I guess your memory just went back by a large amount." She never realized how quick of a liar she was.
"Is that so?" Sora held his hand by his chin. "Wait a second; you said it's the 23rd, right?"
She nodded.
"That means—tomorrow's my birthday."
That was right. Kairi almost forgot that he was going to be turning sixteen tomorrow. So he just lost his memory the day before his birthday? That had to be a record for the biggest kick in the balls known to man.
Sora chuckled. "This is a lot for me to take in, you know?"
She nodded. "I understand. You must be really confused. Maybe you should get some rest."
"Yeah, maybe I should. And maybe it'd be best if you left."
Those words were like a dagger with a jagged edge, forcing itself into her torso. But she knew that getting distraught about it was not the right away to handle the situation, it only be reflected on her health. It wasn't a secret that back then, Sora had trust issues. This wasn't anything new to her, yet it was still painful.
She nodded as she forced a smile. "Y-you're right. I'm sorry. I-I hope you get better soon."
Kairi quickly left before his eyes could pierce into her heart more. She stood by the door and looked back just to get one last glimpse of his face.
There he was, glaring at her with eyes that could kill.
The old Sora had returned, and he had no signs of going back. All of those memories… for nothing? Could this whole situation be more of a troll?
She offered a quick smile (to which he did not reciprocate by any means) before turning her back towards him. Her orbs immediately saddened as she closed his door. She held back the tears as her fists trembled from the shock of it all.
Don't cry… come on, don't cry…
Sora wouldn't want to see her cry. If he still had his memories and was the man he grew to be, he'd tell her to stay strong. Everything would be okay.
Don't cry.
Life isn't made of fairy tales, it's made of reality. The reality is that there's no such thing as a happy ending when it comes to romantic relationships.
Damn it Sora, quit being right all the time.
...
Roxas busted through the door in a nervous sweat. "Naminé!"
The main entrance was empty. He checked in the living room—empty. Roxas scratched his hair confusedly. He heard a few giggles from around the corner. He made his way into the kitchen where he found Xion and Naminé in a lighthearted conversation. He certainly did not expect those two of all people to be getting along.
Xion was the first one to notice him. "Hi, Roxas."
But his eyes barely acknowledged her. His eyes were fixated on the gorgeous blonde sitting across from her. Naminé looked at him with a warm smile.
"Hey," she simply said.
For Roxas, this was like a dream. "Hey."
Naminé stood up from her seat. Every movement she made was of grace, Roxas felt himself tearing up a bit just from the sight of her.
"Roxas," she muttered, but before she could say anything else, she was ambushed into a hug by the poor blond. She was caught off guard; her wide eyes were staring into space.
"Naminé… I am so, so, so sorry for everything that's happened. But I want you to know that I would never, in a million years, do anything behind your back. I'd have to be a fool to cheat on someone as amazing as you…"
His voice, his words, his tone, it all sounded so genuine. Not to mention it was such a relief. She had forgotten what it was like to hear his sweet voice. Perhaps she did overreact, not allowing him to fully explain himself from the beginning.
In a sense, she began to feel like this was all her fault. Instead of running off to go sulk in depression, she should have been figuring how to fix the problem at hand. Riku called it; she was completely ignoring the situation, trying to run away from her problems simply because she felt like it. Perhaps her current status with Riku was just an excuse to run away. Regardless, it sure didn't feel that way now.
She didn't know what to do.
"R-R-Roxas, I…"
"You don't have to say anything. All that matters is that we're together now. Alright? Don't say anything…"
A tear slid down his eye. He was so worried about her and he could hardly believe she was actually here in his presence, her touch was intoxicating. He wiped his tear away and sniffed.
"Are you okay?" Naminé asked.
"Yeah, sorry. I didn't mean to look so uncool back there."
Naminé giggled. She almost forgot what it was like to be around him.
"We can catch the next flight to Twilight Town if we hurry!" Roxas declared, racing up the stairs.
"But I need to—"
"I already packed your things, don't worry!"
Xion smiled. "He's really sweet, huh? You're quite lucky to have somebody like him." She noticed the turmoil located on Naminé's face.
"Y-yeah." Naminé pulled out her phone. "Hold on, let me just take a quick call."
...
"WHAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!" Yuffie screamed.
"Keep your voice down, dumb bitch!" Kairi retorted. She was in the living room with Yuffie and Axel.
"Why should I?! You just told me that Sora, a.k.a, my brother, a.k.a, my best friend, has totally forgotten about me! Am I supposed to be calm? Or did I just miss something?"
Okay, good point. But still, Kairi did not want Sora hearing her loudmouth.
"I'm losing it! I'm freaking losing it here!" Yuffie began running around in circles.
Kairi ignored her and turned her attention to Axel. "How about Ms. Hikari? How's she doing?"
"She's still asleep," he answered. "But I can only assume that the same thing that happened to Sora is gonna happen to her."
Yuffie stopped dead in her tracks. "Does that mean my mom is gonna forget about me too?" She grabbed her head and flung it towards the ceiling. "Damn it, damn it, damn it!"
Yuffie was on the verge of going on a panic attack. How could Sora have forgotten her? This had to be some kind of trick.
"Look," Kairi said sternly. "You have to stay away from Sora, okay?"
"Wha—why?!" the raven haired girl gasped.
"Think about it, if you lost all of your memories and became reverted back to a certain point in your life with no recollection of anything that's happened, would you want a bunch of strangers to be parading you with weird stories about them?"
"But—"
"Yuffie, think for a second! Name some of the things you and Sora have done together these past few months."
"We stopped a deranged killer from hurting any more innocent victims, we stopped your creepy fan club from trying to lock Sora up forever, and we formed a basketball team that could stop Istuki! That only proves that our bond—"
"It only proves that he won't believe you regardless. We aren't normal teenagers with normal lives, Yuffie. Let's face the facts, we are a bizarre bunch who have gone through bizarre revelations. And quite frankly…" she sighed. "nobody in their right mind would believe us anyway. Especially not someone as dense as Sora."
The words hurt, but they were true. All Yuffie wanted to do was lash out and tell Sora about all of the amazing experiences they had together these past few months in hopes a spark would light up in his memory box, but the reality…
The reality of it all was…
He'd never believe it in the first place. Sora would just freak out.
"I made up a lie telling him that we're friends from school. He bought it, but only because it wasn't anything abnormal or anything."
Yuffie wasn't one to get emotional, but she'd be lying if she said she wasn't on the verge of tears.
"So, what do I do?"
"Leave," Kairi said a little harshly.
Yuffie was taken aback; tears began streaming down her cheeks freely. "I can't just do that! How can I try to forget about all of the memories we've shared! How can I just throw all of that away?"
"That isn't what I'm asking of you! We can't just force ourselves onto him. We wouldn't be having his health at our best interest if we did that! Look, I'm not saying you have to go away forever, I'm just saying let's give it some time. Maybe we can find a cure, maybe his memories will actually come back. Until then, we need to wait and see what happens! I know this must be hard, because believe me, I'm hurting just as much as you right now… but we have to be patient!"
"Well, I'm not patient!"
"Settle down, you two," Axel says, "you don't want Sora to hear you, do you?"
"He won't hear," Kairi confirms. "I've been in this house long enough to know that he can't hear from the living room." Kairi turns her head to the distraught raven head. "Yuffie… don't worry, okay? I'm going to do my best to get him back to the way he's supposed to be. If I was able to bring him out of his shell before, then I can do it again, right? So don't get all crazy on me, okay? I'll get him back, I promise."
"Shut up!" Yuffie's hand connects with Kairi's cheek, leaving a red stain apparent on the redhead's face. Kairi places her own hand on it with surprise broadcasted on her expression.
"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" Yuffie cries. "You've always wanted him to yourself! You've always been so selfish! You've always sheltered him from the rest of us because you were so caught up in your own ego to let him go! You like to brag that you were the sole reason that Sora was able to open up to other people! You try to act like you're his angel! That you're some kind of saint, but I think you're just a self-conceited bitch!"
Kairi was at a loss for words. How could Yuffie say such things?
"Yuffie, calm down—" Axel says as he tries to grab a hold of her arm, which she forcefully rejects.
"Get your damn hands off me!" she yells with the tears streaming down her eyes, filled with anger. She looked at Kairi. "Why did it have to be you, huh? All I see is a pretty face, and there's nothing more to you than that! You really piss me off, you know that? Thinking that you're so perfect—I don't know what he sees in you! I thought I would be suitable enough for his needs! I thought at one point that maybe—maybe I was perfect for him!"
Wait a minute, what was she saying? Did she mean what Kairi thought she meant?
"Maybe I was in love with him too!"
The ultimate confession.
Kairi always knew that Yuffie had a little something for Sora, but she always labeled it as a mere crush, an infatuation, a fascination that only led to the brother-sister bond the two of them soon shared. Anything more than that was ludicrous.
But standing here now, with Yuffie in such a helpless, tear-stained position, it was almost traumatizing for Kairi. The happy-go-lucky Yuffie without a care in the world actually has her own dilemmas? The nobody's perfect statement never felt truer. It was paralyzing to see Yuffie so vulnerable, it was a sight Kairi had never wanted to see. If anything could describe her friend right now, it was a swift and sudden fall from grace.
"Y-Yuffie…"
Yuffie clutches her arm. "It's really hard, you know? Watching the one you love, knowing he doesn't return your feelings, knowing that he doesn't think of you any more than just a friend, a sister, a buddy… knowing that you can't tell him your true feelings because you know that it can only cause more stress for him… knowing that his happiness rests in the hands of another… it sucks pretty hardcore elephant shit…"
She took a deep breath.
"Yuffie, I—" Kairi didn't even know where to begin. She felt like she had completely disregarded her feelings. "I know I can't make up for everything, but I'm sorry, and I hope you can forgive me."
Yuffie sniffles as she rubs a few tears away.
"Yuffie you have to understand, you're just as important to Sora as I ever was… okay? He loves you just as much. I may have been able to bring him out of his shell, but you were able to keep him out. I can't tell you how many times he's told me about how much he admires you, about how much he looks up to you and wants to be more like you one day. Every time he tells me a story about you two's crazy little adventures, he has this sparkle in his eye. So don't get things twisted, he loves you all the same."
Yuffie sniffles again. "I know, but, it's just hard. It's not the same as the love he has for you."
Kairi opened her mouth, but the words didn't follow the suit. What could she say after that? What she said wasn't false, at least from her knowledge.
"Why didn't you tell me that you had feelings for him?"
Yuffie scoffed. "And what good would come out of that? If anything, it'd just cause more problems between the two of us. I didn't want that either. Despite how jealous I was of you, I didn't want to ruin our friendship."
Kairi couldn't imagine how much Yuffie had to be suffering. Kairi knew how much she herself loved Sora, and just thinking about him with another girl just made her skin almost melt into a pot of frustration. Was that what Yuffie had been enduring this entire time? She blanketed it well under her smiles.
Her smiles, her blessings… were they all merely facades to hide the truth? The truth that Yuffie was hurting so dearly?
"Remember when I started dating Riku and I ended up totally forgetting about Sora, subconsciously trying to forget about him? Why didn't you take advantage of the situation? He could be yours now."
Yuffie scowled at her. "Look me in the eyes and tell me that's what you would really want to happen."
"Uh—well, no—"
"Face it, Kai. He only has his sights set for you. And who am I to try and blind him? Taking advantage of the situation would only mean I'd be taking advantage of him. In the end, you would have caused a fight with me since you obviously never liked Riku in that way to begin with. And Sora, well…" she chuckles miserably, "let's just say that the future wouldn't be too bright for him. In the end, he'd only question our relationship—wondering how he let a girl like you slip away."
The scary part was that she was probably right. That scenario didn't seem like it was too far from reality. Kairi could see that situation unfold clearly. Yuffie was smart enough to know that it would only lead to a bad road.
"Do you hate me?" Kairi asked underneath her breath.
"No," Yuffie answered honestly. "I don't hate you, I'm just envious."
The redhead didn't want to ever have to see her friend look so weak ever again. She knew what she had to do. "I'll make it up to you for all the suffering you've had to endure, okay? I promise, everything will come together, alright? But you have to trust me, I know what I'm doing, Yuff. It may take some time, but I'll get Sora back to the way he was." She balls her fist as she tightens it close to her chest. "At least, as much as I can. I'm not saying that you have to get out of Sora's life, but you'll just have to wait."
Yuffie remained unsure. "But I'm his best friend…"
"But you have to trust me."
Yuffie lets out a long awaited breath. "Fine… but where will I stay?"
"You can stay at my place for the time being." She placed a hand on Yuffie's exposed shoulder. "I'll help get you through this."
"O-okay."
Kairi wrapped her into a hug. After letting it process through her head, Yuffie hugged back, inducing herself in Kairi's warmth.
"I'm really sorry… I should have been more sensitive to how you felt."
"It's okay, it's not like you knew."
The two pulled apart. Kairi wiped a stray tear away from Yuffie's face, and the raven girl gave her a small smile. Kairi turned to her brother.
"Axel, take her home and get her situated."
"Okay, but what are you about to do?"
"I have to make a phone call."
I'm sure the fact that Yuffie was secretly in love with Sora may not have been THAT much of a surprise, but it's only been hinted at and was never confirmed.
So anyway, what's up! *avoids the tomatoes being thrown* Okay, sorry! SORRY! Yeah, it's been a LONG TIME since I last updated this story. Man oh man, in four days it would have been approximately two months. So yeah, I'm soooo sorry for the lateness! I've been busy doing other things.
I want to give a special shoutout to a guest who went by the name Adrian. He left me a review that said that this was his favorite fan fic of all-time, which I thought was such a sweet thing to say! I personally think there are tons of stories out there worth checking out more so than mine, but nonetheless, his review is what inspired me to get this out. You can all thank him for that!
I had this chapter sitting in my documents forever. I started on it the day after I posted chapter 24, and then I don't know what happened, but I just lost all motivation to finish it. So I'm sorry about that, and I really hope this chapter makes up for it! Tell me what you thought about it in a review! I'll try my best to get the next one out soon. To avoid any more severe lateness like this time, I'm making the deadline for chapter 26 to be 9/20/14. As always, if I finish it before then, I'll just put it up right when I'm done.
On a depressing note (at least for me), I'm sick right now. I caught some kind of virus that's travelling through my school, and I feel like a total log, and my nose is killing me... eugh, I hate being sick...
And last, but certainly not least, I'd like to give a special thanks to everybody who's been supporting this story since day one! I have 54 people who favorited, and 63 follows! You guys are so awesome for that, really! I really like showing my supporters my appreciation, because you guys really don't know how much it means to me that you would actually take the time to read my stuff.
So here's my shoutout to everybody who's favorited and followed:

That was a LOT of names to type up so if I forgot you, doubled your name, or misspelled it, please tell me and I'll fix it immediately. It isn't much, but this is the best I can think of when it comes to showing my appreciation to you guys. Although, this may be the last time that I'll ever do this shoutout just because it's going to get a lot more complicated if I end up getting even more supporters. Oh, and much thanks to all of the guests that reviewed as well!
Another special shoutout to The V-Blade, who's been such a good friend to me this whole year!
Let's see, is there anything else to add to this unnecessarily long Author's Note? I guess not, so much love to all of you! And have a wonderful day, night, evening, whatever it is in your time zone! lol
