Sorry for the delay. But anyway here it is, Happy's chapter.
See chapter 1 for the disclaimer
Happy was doing his best to live up to his namesake. Ever since his mother had…gone upwards the middle child had tried to help everyone the best he could. He'd gone with Sleepy to the store and helped carry the food shopping home. He'd sat with Dreamy and tried to help with his homework, even though most times he didn't really understand the questions. He'd done his best to keep Sneezy and Bashful entertained and, well, happy.
He hadn't managed to help his dad, because his dad wasn't getting out of bed till Happy was already at school, and he hadn't managed to help Doc because…well he wasn't really sure why. Then again Doc did see to be coping well with the whole mother dying thing…
"Happy Dwarf, are you listening?" With that Happy snapped back to reality to see his teacher, Miss Lovely was looking at him in concern.
"Yes miss."
"What did I say then?"
"Er…" Happy looked at the board for clues.
"We're doing a family tree for the History project. You have the rest of the lesson to write it up."
Sounded simple enough. Happy immediately selected a few pens in his favourite coulers and started drawing the tree.
He spent most of the lesson happily drawing and coulering in the tree. The next thing he knew there was fifteen minutes left till the end of the lesson and he decided that he'd better start writing his family down.
He finished with ten minutes to spare and so went over to the desk to get some more paper to draw on.
Also there was Curie Ous. He looked at Happy as he approached. "Are you done already?" He asked in surprise.
"Yep!" Happy said, smiling. "Now I'm gonna do some drawing."
"Cool, can I see?"
"Sure thing!" With that Happy led him over to his desk and presented his family tree to him. "See?"
Curie looked at it and then said. "It's good, but it needs one thing…" With that he picked up Happy's pen and put a line through the word 'Mum'.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?" Happy shrieked, causing the teacher and the rest of the class to look up in alarm.
Curie shrugged. "Well, your mum died, didn't she?" He said, calmly. "Therefore she's not part of your family any more therefore she shouldn't be on the tree. Simple."
It was then that Happy felt something he had never really felt before. Rage, pure undiluted rage. The next thing he knew Curie was on the ground crying with blood trickling down his face.
"Happy Dwarf!" Miss Lovely put her hands on his shoulder and turned his round to face her. "What do you think you're doing?"
"He crossed my mums name out!"
With that Curie and Happy were both sent to after-school detention, Happy's first detention since he'd joined the school.
After spending an hour doing absolutely nothing Happy was allowed to leave. Doc was sitting on one of the hard uncomfortable chairs outside the office.
"Doc." Happy was surprised. He was expecting Sleepy.
"Happy." Doc said, fixing his younger brother with a steely glare. "Detention, really? For fighting?"
"It was his fault!"
"Did he throw the first punch?"
"Well not with his fists, no…"
"How else can you throw a punch?"
"By talking."
Doc paused. "What? What are you talking about?"
Happy sighed and sat down next to his elder brother. "We were doing the family tree project and I put mums name on it. Obviously - and he scrubbed it out!"
"Scrubbed it out?"
"Put a line right through it! I shoulda hit him harder…" Happy leant back in the seat and folded his arms.
"Well, as your older brother I should say you definitely should not hit anyone ever."
"Even if they deserve it?"
"Even if they deserve it."
Happy pondered that for a few moments before saying. "That's stupid."
Doc laughed. "It is, yes. Anyway, let's go. C'mon, get up…"
The school was five minutes' walk away from the house. As the two of them walked Happy was in deep thought.
"Doc?"
"Yes, Happy?"
"Bashful and Dopey…will they remember mum?"
Doc winced, and scratched his head. He had been expecting this. "Er…well…you see…"
"Don't worry about sugar-coating it. I'll be fine. I'll remember her."
With that Doc launched into explanation. "Well you see you, Dreamy, Sleepy, myself and, of course, dad will remember mum for a long time. Probably until we die. Your personal memories might…fade or become distorted so to speak because you are quite young and mum is obviously…not here." Upon seeing Happy looking up at him Doc hastened to add. "You will remember her, don't worry about that, but there might be a couple of memories you have now that will disappear or change a bit." Seeing Happy didn't look particularly reassured by this Doc changed subject. "Onto our younger brothers. Dopey will not remember mum. At all, he's just too young, you see."
"He never really met her." Happy said, sounding a bit more mature than he actually was.
"Exactly. Bashful…well it's debatable. He probably will think he remembers her, but what he will actually remember is stories we tell him, which he will think are his own. He might have scents, er smells, that he associates with her. Maybe baking or perfume it's debatable. Anyway, Sneezy will be a bit like you in the fact he will forget most of his memories, due to the fact he's so young, but he will probably have a good couple of concrete memories regarding her. He will probably adopt some of our memories to be his." With that Doc trailed off. It was quite a depressing subject to think about actually, so he tried to round it off on a positive note. "Basically we all, with the exception of Dopey, will remember mum in some degree and that is the point. She won't be forgotten ever. And in regards to Dopey we can tell him all about mum. Trust me Hap, she won't be forgotten."
With that final word Happy began to feel just a bit happier than he had that morning.
