Chi held out Harley's seat like a true gentleman before he took his own across from her in Madame Puddifoot's Tea Shop. It was Valentine's Day and after embarrassing himself with Harley at the end of that DA meeting, he had done a lot of thinking. It had been almost a year now since the events of the Third Task. Maybe it was time to move on from Cedra.
He looked over at Harley who had pulled her Gryffindor scarf off and was now fidgeting nervously in her seat. They had started talking again when school resumed in January and she had been ecstatic when Chi asked her out on a date. They had still refrained however from talking about any personal topics, keeping most of their conversations about school.
"What are you getting?" Chi asked as he looked at the menu. He had come here often with Cedra last year so he had an idea of what there was to offer. "We could get a cinnamon scone and split it."
"I'll take anything here as long as I can get cinnamon on it," Cedra said as she read the menu.
"That's alright. I hate cinnamon," Harley said, her mouth curving into an unflattering frown. "I'll just get a hot chocolate."
Chi shook Cedra's voice from his head, almost missing what Harley had said. He had been having odd memories like that for a long time, always popping up at inopportune moments.
He signalled to a passing elf in costume. After telling it their order, he looked back at Harley who was looking at him expectantly. With Cedra, the conversation just flowed, sometimes Chi joked that she'd lose her voice with how much she talked, but Harley was quieter.
"So, I can't believe Umbridge really banned you from Quidditch," Chi said trying to find something to talk about.
"I know," Harley said. "I love the skies and I miss the feeling of the wind in my hair."
Chi could remember Cedra's hair blowing in the wind as she flew around the Quidditch pitch. There was always a large smile on her face, the sun giving her skin a wonderful healthy glow.
"I know what you mean, Cedra," Chi said.
"What?" Harley asked.
"I mean, Harley," Chi said, unable to look into the dark-haired girl's eyes.
But maybe this was the perfect time to bring her up actually. Chi had been bottling up his feelings for Cedra for months and now he sat directly across from the only person who could understand what he may be going through.
"Do you ever talk about it?" Chi asked, throwing caution to the wind.
Harley's eyes widened before she looked down at her hands on the table. "People don't really want to hear it, since they think I'm a liar and an attention-seeker. I just want to move on from it."
"How can you say that?I want to hear it! I want to talk about it!" Chi exploded, slamming his hand onto the table. "I have no one to talk about it since no one cared about Cedra like I do. No cares that she won't be around to drink cinnamon with her tea and share my scones but I do."
It took a whole two seconds after the end of his rant for Chi to realize he had done the wrong thing. Harley just stared at him blankly, before her eyes ran across the tiny cup of sugar he had knocked over when he hit the table.
"Harley, I shouldn't-" Chi began. He was trying to make it up to the dark-haired girl, trying to move on, and he had done a horrible job of it.
Harley rose from her chair. Chi saw the slight shudder in her shoulders as she looked in his eyes. "I think I should go," Harley said, her voice slightly cracking at the end.
"No, Harley, wait!" Chi called but Harley had already pulled her scarf back around her neck and exited the store.
The elf had returned a few second later, placing the scone and his tea before him and the hot chocolate in front of the empty seat. Chi stared moodily into his tea.
"You always put your foot in your mouth, don't you," Cedra said.
"Of course, but only around you, Cedra," Chi muttered as he took a sip of his drink.
