Flora opened the door to the small dining area in her mother's house. Her younger sister Miele was seated at the table, happily munching on a sandwich. The three year old looked up as she entered.

"Flora!" she cried, her sandwich abandoned as she ran over to her older sister.

Flora picked her up as she squealed. "Hi, sweetie," she laughed.

Miele's face suddenly turned serious and Flora asked, "What is it?" as Miele struggled to be put down.

"Mummy wants you," the younger girl mumbled. Flora raised an eyebrow as confusion filled her.

"OK, I'll go see her. You go back to your lunch." Without replying, Miele ran back to the table and heaved herself onto the chair.

Flora closed the door of the dining room behind her as she made her way to the tiny study, where mother was most likely to be located. When she reached the closed door, she heard two female voices. One of them was her mother; the other she didn't recognise. She knocked tentatively.

"Come in!" called her mother. She opened the door.

Once inside, she saw her mother and a slightly older woman sitting on the two-seater sofa, which was covered with a fairly new chocolate throw rug. Her mother had her back to her, the woman facing her.

The other woman had pale blonde hair that reached her waist, and eyes that looked like they had seen years of affection: soft, kind, tolerating. Flora liked this woman already.

"Hello, Flora, dear," her mother said. She whipped her head round.

"Hi," Flora returned, smiling.

"This is Amethyst," her mother explained, pointing to the woman. "She looked after you when you were a baby, while I had parenting classes."

Promptly, Flora broke out into a polite smile. She had heard about this woman that she had spent most of her baby months with. Being the result of a drunken one-night stand meant that she wasn't planned, resulting in her mother having no choice but to leave her with someone while she learned how to be a proper mother.

"Hello," she said to Amethyst, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Hello, Flora," Amethyst whispered softly.

Flora sat opposite them as she and Amethyst talked. She learnt that she spent seven whole months in Amethyst's arms. She learnt that her father had never been traced. She even learnt that Miele's own father died of a drug intoxication.

That wasn't what she heard. She heard that the man walked out about two months after she left for Alfea. Two years after Miele was born. She would have to ask her mother about that after Amethyst left.
