I know that Link actually lands on levias head and then learns the final part of the song, but I forgot it while writing XD I might go back to fix that later, let's see...
I just wanted her to miss the show XD)
"So he knew all along?" Link asked over the roaring of his sword. Apparently that invisible sword spirit of his called it "dowsing". I called it an insult to the ears.
I nodded meekly: "I guess... He did hint at that when we met and also later, before he was cursed. But to be honest, I had forgotten all about it."
"That is kind of scary..."
"Actually, that is kind of messed up." I said, a bit more pissed off than I had wanted to sound, "He could have damn told me all along. I would have not fallen a second damn time, making Faron flood the whole damned woods to save my backside a second time. I would have known that I was going through a damned phase of awakening with my dark magic! I wouldn't have gotten all of us in trouble and would have fought against Ghira instead of with him!"
To my surprise, this made him smile.
"And what's so damn funny!"
"You know... The last time I can recall walking past the market with you, you regarded any excuse for making trouble a welcome distraction." he chuckled.
I almost broke a smile: "Never mind, sleepyhead."
"Hey, I don't oversleep anymore!"
Grinning, just as old friends should be able to, we walked to the light tower. The humming noise from his sword was driving me nuts by the time we reached an undefined place, just beyond the landing. Annoyed I batted at some stray butterflies. After all of those damned allegories I never wanted one of those insects in my face ever again.
When he put away his sword to take out Zeldas lyre, I looked at him baffled: "Link? What are you doing?"
He grinned slightly, strumming the instrument: "Playing. It will open the passage. Just stand back and cover your ears, just in case."
No need to tell me that twice! Funnily enough I got used to the music quickly. It was something else that made my eardrums rumble. Link would later explain to me that Phi would dance and sing along to his playing. Her magic was what actually opened the passage to the silent realm.
Before my eyes the magical ring shrunk and expanded, giving him his cues for playing. Petals of runes and magical gibberish where deciphering themselves before us, floating to the ground elegantly. Once the whole flower was unfurled, I noticed that Link did not really have any idea what he was playing. He just strummed in time. Gently, almost caring, he brought the melody to an end.
As he put his lyre away again, I uncovered my ears and blinked down at the flower pattern on the ground. A short moment of panic struck me when I thought of what lay beyond this forsaken portal.
"Must you go to that place?" I whispered in horror. All color must have left my face, at least he looked extremely worried: "I want you to stay here and protect my body while I'm over there. It may only take a moment."
"I'm not letting you go alone, Link. We're in this together." I stated bluntly and stood next to him with determination. This made him smile: "You really haven't changed much."
I cast my eye away to the ground. The only thing I noticed to have changed was the fact that I finally knew when to be silent.
He pulled his weapon out, pointing the tip to the glowing floor. Then he raised the hilt towards the gods, before jamming the tip into the ground. I did not even see it happen anymore. My eyesight went black. Only Links heartbeat remained there, but it was growing distant, more so every moment until it was silence.
And by that I mean complete, utter silence.
Link was the same, glowing phantom I remembered from our first trip to the silent realm.
Again, I found myself without a voice or a figure. I was like a formless ghost with an invisible body. My hearing was deafened except for the gentle glowing breaths by the droplets all around Skyloft.
Links voice woke me from my mesmerized trance, in which I listened out to them: "Medowlaria? Are you here with me?"
Instead of answering I touched his hand for a short, painful moment.
"Let us go. Just be careful to not get caught." he explained and then ran. The roar of chase crashed against my ears but I bit my tongue and took a deep breath. A moment later it was all over anyway. We reached the droplet. When he touched it, it burst like a bubble and the world grew silent once more.
I could already see where this was going. Once I tried to run ahead and carry the drop to him but it seared my hands from inches away. So that was not such a hot id- okay, not worth that bad pun. It was just a really bad idea!
He collected the drops while I tiptoed around, not really knowing what to do. I should be helping him somehow, but this place was impossible for me. I couldn't even pull him into the right directions. Bored, I glanced up at a Watcher. He was hovering close to me, at about my eye level. I was about to go away and look at something more interesting, when the mortifying ring of the bell struck from his hand. In terror I understood that while Link might not see me, they most certainly could.
A few steps away, Link gave a strangled, mortified cry. Disoriented I made my way to him, praying he would not fall under a blade.
Before I could reach him, his hand touched another droplet and everything went quiet. He was shaky and his breathing ragged. With determination he pressed: "Don't. Walk. Under. The damned. Lights!"
"Sorry..." I breathed as he regained his composure and started running again, always towards the next droplet. Cursing myself I ran after him.
This was going to be damn hard.
-X-
In the end I walked back to the portal and decided to wait. I could only listen out to him as he ran around, collecting stuff. But every time the world broke out into noise I held my ears in pain. What idiotic idea had it been to come here. This looked like a good ol' "I did not think this through" thing.
Weird... It looked like he had all droplets but one. And his time was running out. He was still searching, looking for it in a fearfull frenzy. But where was it?
The humming above my head finally tipped me off. I climbed up the ladder of the light tower, reaching up to the top. Typical. It just had to be hidden where it couldn't be found, didn't it! Who ever invented this stupid realm was a maniac!
When I reached the top, my eyes glinted. It was right here! Unfortunately Link was somewhere out there. He would never reach it in time! My thoughts where racing as the time ran out. I couldn't touch that stupid thing! I'd get some serious burns!
But then the last second past and the world burst into yelling.
My voice mingled into the screams as I decisively kicked the droplet off the tower with all my might. There! I could already see Link approaching hurriedly and panicked. Well, no wonder... He was certainly running late. And damn, was that five guardians going after him? Poor idiot... At least he could already see the drop-
Let's just say my inner monologue was cut short by the whirling of a double blade cutting at my back. I jumped out of the way, hasting to the other side of the glowing orb in the ground. A curse left my lips. Now that damn guardian stood between me and the ladder. I had not thought this one through...
You know, now, some time after this damn incident, I can understand what happened back then. The guardians had been created to try Link on his journey against his own body and mind. They were an obstacle with a single purpose: to bring out the light in him. When he was too weak or slow and they hit him with their blades, it was the darkness in him that they struck and shattered. I was half made of darkness. All they could see was the darkness in us. So no wonder that the flying nightmare attacked mel
I don't know what would have happened, if I had been hit. But my guess is, that I would have died.
In any case, I stood with my back against the open wall, feeling my breath rattle in my chest fearfully. It was so loud it was as if I had gone deaf, which made me reckless. I took a deep breath, then charged straight at the monsterous guardian. But I threw myeself to the floor, sliding beneath it and shooting strait over the landing of the light tower. My invisible body fell right in the circle of light, next to Link, smashing into pieces moments before I was put back together in the real world.
Tears rolled down my cheeks. Of the many times I had almost died till now, this was the worst yet. I did not understand why, right away. But if I think about it... Had I died right htere, I would have not died, I would have simply ceased to exist. Like a flame in the oven that fights itself to the top and then ahrivels up, enfulging itself and disappearing, without a trace. Invisible and meaningless.
That was when I noticed, that I could no longer see Link.
(well, that was an interesting experience... i am never writing on a tablet again. Period. Hope my suffering is worth it to you!)
