Chapter 26-
Acknowledgments
My eyes were locked on the body on the ground. My best friend had just died, and it was my fault. I tried to stop, I tried so hard.
I killed her? Did I kill her? Please tell me she is alive.
I was hysterical inside, but my body didn't even give her a second glance. My gazed was focused on the small group in the clearing. I eyed them all slowly, trying to judge who was going to attack first, who I would kill first.
"Nice to see you all again," the evil, distant voice echoed around the clearing, while my eyes gazed upon the small group.
"Bella, I know you can hear me. You have to stop."
"Yes she can hear you. Doesn't mean she can do anything about it though. I have her nice and secure."
An infuriated growl echoed around the clearing as Edward took a step towards me.
"No," Renee's arm shot out to stop Edward taking another step forward. "You all must stay back." Even though Edward could have removed Renee's arm easily, he got the message that it wasn't wise to get too close. Instead he took a step back, aligning himself with Emmett.
"You're feisty, aren't you Edward? I can see why she likes you."
Even though Emmett had a tight grip on Edward's arm, I could see his resolve. I knew how much he wanted to run across the field and destroy the thing that was causing me all this heartache and pain. He was clearly at a loss of what to do though, as the thing causing all this was me, or rather in me.
"Bella? You just suffocated your best friend." Zephyr called across to me, trying to reason with me. However, if he wanted to reason with me, he shouldn't have started by bringing up the person who had just tried to kill me.
"Best friend? Some best friend! That bitch is crazy." I screeched, my whole body shaking with anger.
"That's the pot calling the kettle black." Emmett mumbled in amusement, even I couldn't help but chuckle.
"I'm not crazy. I know exactly what I am doing." The voice snapped back. "That girl had the nerve to kidnap me, with a vampire no less. You know how touchy your Bella is about vampires. The poor girl, she nearly had a heart attack when she looked into James's eyes."
"Our Bella is strong."
"Oh please, save the soppy moments for someone that actually cares. Gosh, for adoptive parents, you guys are seriously protective over your Bella."
"She is our daughter."
"No she isn't, and she knows it. She spent so many years of her life feeling alone and lost. Desperate for a normal life, just wanting to fit in."
"This is incredible. In all the time I spent with Bailey, his personality never managed to hold a conversation."
"Things with Bailey didn't turn out right. From everything you have told me, it seems that the experimenting had some serious side effects. His personality was completely out of control, almost rabid. I'm assuming being trapped inside Bailey for so many years turned the personality crazy."
"How would you know all this?"
"How do you think I know? I have been stuck inside your daughter since she was a child. A fully manifest personality, trapped. A personality, full of anger, cunning and rage, trapped with no means of escape. I spent years simmering in my own anger, waiting for the day she would lose all sight of herself, just enough for me to swap our positions, push her behind the barrier that kept me at bay."
So this thing had been trapped inside me since I was a child. It had heard every conversation, seen everything I'd seen, for 16 years. That was a disturbing thought. No wonder it was so angry.
"How did you get out?" Zephyr asked, his thirst for knowledge not yet satisfied.
"I have all of you to thank for that." The group in questions shared looks of confusion amongst themselves.
My pitch black eyes shifted to Renee and Charlie. I had the strangest feeling this wasn't going to be pleasant. My parents stared back in curiosity, wondering where this was going.
"You brought her here, ripped her away from her home. She was anger and frustrated." Oh this was not going to end well.
"We did that to protect her from the Enyo." Charlie spat glaring at me. Well at the thing that occupied my body anyway.
"She didn't know that. Since you never bothered to give her an explanation, she just simmered in that frustration. I mean, let's face it, Forks is hardly going to be a place she dreamed of living."
"Then, to add fuel to the fire, she encountered your friends here. She told you there were vampires living in the same town. Instead of taking into account her past, the fact that she was scared, you just brushed it off."
"We are no harm to Bella," Esme's voice was strong and firm.
"Once again, she didn't know that. All she knew was that there were vampires close by, and her parents essentially chose them over her. So we can add betrayal and despair to that list."
My heart clenched at the words falling from my lips. Yes, they were all true at the time, but they weren't anymore. I know my parents were just trying to protect me, they were just doing what was necessary to keep me safe. Okay, I was a little hurt that they had kept a lot from me but I didn't resent them for it.
"Next came the illustrious Cullen family. To her you were all just a threat, a danger to her, one that she was more than willing to eliminate. You resurfaced some intense feelings of loathing and rage within her." My eyes locked onto Rosalie as the smirk I was holding got bigger. "Some of you more than others. I have to admit; only Bella could discover a coven of vegetarian vampires."
My smirk reached a new high as my gaze landed on Edward. He still looked at a loss of what to do but there was an edge to his eyes and mouth. I just wanted to kiss it away.
Last but not least, we have you, Edward. Her instincts were telling her run, to stay away from you. You surface unknown, strong feelings in her. Emotions she didn't understand. Her hate turned to toleration, then to like, then like to love. She won't acknowledge it, but she loves you." I was going to slap this bitch. As is taunting my parents wasn't bad enough, she now needed to inform people of emotions I had yet acknowledge. I screamed in frustration, smashing my fists against the barrier. It was surprising how much anger and adrenaline I had in me right now. "She really doesn't appreciate me telling you this."
That was an understatement.
"She can hear us?" Edward asked
"She can hear and see everything that is transpiring now. She is just powerless to do anything. At least she gets to watch as you all die."
The word 'die' had an automatic effect on everyone. My parents and Zephyr tensed, Jasper and Emmett automatically took up defensive crouches. Everyone was ready for a fight except Edward. He growled at his family.
"Do not touch her," Edward said in a dark, hostile voice.
"Edward, she will kill us. Right now that person is not Bella!" Jasper had been very silent through all of this. No doubt mapping out a strategy. He was right though. Right now I was not in control of my body and needed to be stopped, before I did something I would regret.
"But Bella is in there, and she is going to need that body."
"I'm sorry Edward." Jasper apologised, but he stayed tensed in his crouch.
"Enough of this," I giggled darkly before firing a deflect spell, sending Zephyr and Renee flying across the clearing. I didn't even see where they landed before my magic was hitting Jasper and Emmet. There was chaos around me as everyone tried to get close enough to take me down. Spells and enchantments fired by my hand and the hands of my parents and Zephyr illuminated the globe I had secured around us.
As I deflected an advance from Alice, a set of strong arms wrapped around my shoulders. Trying to force my arms down. I stamped on their foot, forcing the person to let go, before spinning on my heels and grabbing the person by their throat with magic.
Charlie gasped for air as I hauled him easily into the air.
"Looks like you'll be the first to go, daddy."
My hand squeezed tighter, cutting off his airways. He thrashed and gasped, desperate to fill his lungs with air.
"Stay back Renee," Charlie choked out through my grip.
"But Charlie," Renee tried to reason with him, trying to get close enough to help him.
"He is right, Renee." Zephyr said grabbing my mother's arm.
"Yes Renee, do as you're told." I taunted.
I was going to kill my father the same way I had killed my best friend. I howled and sobbed, banging more harshly against my restraints.
Zephyr shot a stunning spell at me, I just about had the time to cast a shield and hold in in place as the spell slammed against it.
Most of my attention was focused on up holding my shield. Zephyr was a powerful warlock and I was struggling to keep his magic at bay. My teeth sunk into my bottom lips as I attempted to stay concentrated.
"Renee?" Zephyr called to my mother, his voice strained as he attempted to keep his magic pushing against my shield.
"She is my daughter! It could kill her!" Renee screamed distressed. She was at a loss of what to do. I wanted to hug her so badly, to tell her to calm down.
"She will kill us all if we don't stop her!" Zephyr's deep voice was calm but authoritative.
"Renee?" Charlie chocked out through my magical grip on his neck.
I watched as my mother tormented glances flickered from me to Charlie. Her anguished eyes turning resolved.
"I am so sorry, Bella." She said sympathetically before stepping towards Zephyr and gripping his other arm.
What is she doing?
"I'll take her from the side," I heard someone say over the roar of the spell hitting my shield. With both hands occupied, I had to make a choice. As I saw Edward take a step into my side view, I released my grip on Charlie, allowing him to drop to the ground, gasping for air. Defending myself from Zephyr was more important than killing my father.
Upholding the shield with one hand, I used the other to fire any and all spells I could think of towards my vampire family. Clearly they had been anticipating the attacks, as they all dodged and ducked around the blasts of magic I was throwing, a fact I was deeply grateful for.
With my attention focused on the Cullen's, I failed to notice that Charlie had dragged himself from the ground and had joined my mother and Zephyr. I watched as the three of them gripped each
other's hands and wrists, creating a small triangle. The three of them mumbled something in a language I had yet to understand or learn.
I knew they were doing something. Unable to identify what they were up to, I disengaged from the Cullen's and deflected Zephyr's stunning spell.
Nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.
A jet of bright white light shot from their joined hands, hitting me directly in the chest. The pain was immediate, and so intense that I no longer had any concept of my surroundings. It felt like white-hot knives were plunging into every available inch of my skin. I had no idea what spell they had used, but I knew it was neither a standard spell nor anything that I had been taught before. It was unlike anything I had ever heard of or experienced. My whole body froze with the pain it was in, literally unable to move as the invisible knife plunged into every inch of body.
The force of the spell knocked everything out of me. Before I knew it, I was flying across the clearing, smashing into a tree. My head cracked against the tree before my body crumpled to the floor.
XOXOXOXOXOX
The smell of grass and dirt registered first, probably due to the fact the side of my face was pressed into the ground. The damp grass was soaking through the back of my top.
I couldn't move. My muscles felt like jelly, my head was pounding and the pain running through my chest was enough to keep me laying there, not even attempting to move. It even hurt to breathe. my breaths were short and sharp, and my heart was beating at an alarming rate. I wanted my mum.
With my ear pressed directly onto the ground, I heard hesitant footsteps approaching me. I completely understood the caution; five minutes ago I was in psycho mode.
"Is she okay?"
"Carlisle, can you check Samantha?" Charlie asked politely, his voice tense and emotional.
"Of course."
"It's probably best to take Zephyr with you, just in case she wakes." Was the muffled reply I heard before a few set of footsteps ran off in the other direction.
"Mum?" I whispered so quietly it barely made a noise. The only indication that I had spoken was the slight movement of my lips. They were the only thing that it didn't hurt to move.
At the sound of my voice, the approaching footsteps sped up and before I knew it, a set of warm hands ran over my forehead.
"She's bleeding." I recognised Alice's voice, but it was strained and distant. The soft hand on my forehead ran to the back of my head, coming into contact with a warm sticky substance. Blood.
"Bella?" Renee's broken, guilty voice spoke my name.
I couldn't even find the energy to reply, to tell her that I was alive. I managed to moan, weather it was to answer her or because I needed to express how much pain I was in.
"Bella? Open your eyes honey. Please open your eyes."
Using my mum's voice as an anchor, I pulled myself through the pain and forced my eyes open. As they adjusted to the darkness, I was just about able to locate everyone. My mum was crouched next to me, gripping my hand tightly. Charlie was standing just behind her, and Zephyr was behind him. The Cullen's stood just off to the side, allowing my parents to be close to me. However, all of their eyes were locked on my face, worry evident in all of their expressions.
"Oh baby, I am so sorry. We had no choice," Renee choked out as tears ran freely down her face. I wanted to tell her it was okay, that I completely understood why they did it, that it wasn't her fault and I loved her.
"Renee, I need to examine her," Carlisle said appearing behind my hysterical mother and placing a calming hand on her shoulder. Reluctantly and with a little help from Charlie, Renee moved from my side to behind my head.
I practically shrieked as Renee attempted to lift me off the ground. The slight movement sent shooting pains through my chest and brain. Thankfully at the sound of my agony, she lowered me back to the ground and took hold of my hand.
My vision swam so violently that I was forced to close my eyes. I was so tired. I just wanted to sleep.
"No Bella, you have to open your eyes." Carlisle said urgently, his medical training in full force.
"Tired," I breathed out.
"I know you are," his voice was comforting and sympathetic and yet urgent. "But I need you to stay with me."
"Samantha?" I moaned out as Carlisle poked my ribs, looking for breaks.
"She is alive, Bella. She will have some minor injuries but she will live."
I released a breath I didn't even know I was holding as the weight was lifted off of me. I hadn't killed her. She needed help and support, hopefully she would get that. Thinking of support, I really needed mine.
"Edward?" I asked breathlessly, as Carlisle's hands ran over me, assessing my injuries.
"I'm right here," within seconds Edward was by my side, taking hold of my spare hand. "You're going to be fine, but you must stay awake, love."
"It hurts," I whimpered as my eye lids drooped further. Was I dying? It definitely felt like it.
"I know sweetheart,"
"Am I going to die?" I whispered fearing the answer but really wanting to know.
"No of course you aren't!" Edwards's voice was stern and strong his face fierce in his resolve, he truly believed that I was going to be okay. However, the same could not be said about the rest of the group surrounding me. Renee and Charlie were looking devastated, tears running from their eyes as
they held each other together. Even Zephyr looked upset. They didn't know what was going to happen and were not even attempting to hide their emotions.
"It's okay," I said softly, my own tears gently falling as I kept my eyes locked on my parents. The two people who had been there for me through thick and thin. They had uprooted their lives in order to take care of me and I would never be able to thank them enough.
"I love you." I managed to choke out.
"We love you too Bella," Charlie spoke for the both of them as Renee had gone into full break down. Her face was pressed into my father's chest, her cries barely muffled by the fabric of his shirt.
The exhaustion was seeping deeper into my bones and muscles. I couldn't fight it anymore. Unable to stop it, my eye lids slid shut and my last bit of energy slipped from my body.
"Stay with me Bella." His grip on my hand tightened as he begged me to stay. I could see a thin layer of tears in his eyes, tears that would never fall. However, I was crying enough for the both of us and it didn't help that my breathing was slowing; it was becoming more and more difficult to force oxygen through my lungs. Not to mention how painful it was.
Watching my parents break down was more than enough, now I had to add to that the fact that the only guy I have ever loved looked like he was dying right along with me. I forced my hand up to his face, gently caressing his cold cheek.
"I need you. It took me so long to find you." His voice was so muffled and distant that I could barely make it out.
"It will be okay." My voice was so faint it barely came out as a whisper. I was grateful for his super hearing.
"Bella?!"
The pain in my head grew worse, my vision became completely blurry and my breathing shallow.
"Bella!"
Everything went black.
