Lee and Lucy continuously get mistaken for a couple in a day. I think this might be my favourite fic that I've written. Don't know why but let me know what you think.
It's funny how your life can change within 24 hours. The smallest remarks, findings, questions, decisions or actions making the difference. You could accidentally bump into someone in the street and make a new friend, you could find out that your pregnant, getting married, being fired from your job or even that your partner is having an affair. Good or bad these little remarks, actions, decisions or findings can turn your life around. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. On this one particular day Lee and Lucy would have it happen to them.
The first remark came whilst they were walking side by side down the street, towards the nearest supermarket for the weekly shop, that came a few days too early. Lee had decided that he'd eat everything they had, except for fruit within a space of three days. Claiming it to be a challenge set out by her brother. Lucy hadn't bought one bit of it and had decided to drag him out with her.
"I seriously can not believe you managed to eat that much food!" Lucy exclaimed after the anger had worn off slightly.
"It's a gift." Lee replied as he patted his stomach. It had been challenging but he wasn't loosing a bet. Especially to Tim.
Without realising Lee had bumped into a woman that had been walking towards them. This stranger had turned round and sharply replied,"watch where your husband is going." Before turning on her heel, leaving a slightly shocked Lee and Lucy behind.
They had decided to ignore the comment, thinking that it was simply because they were walking side by side and conversing. It was just a simple mistake that anyone could make. It was simply a coincidence when it happened the second time that day.
They were having a whispered argument in one of the food aisles. Lee wanting to buy a extra pack of value-pack Pot Noodles and Lucy refusing, telling him he ate too much of them anyway and they were no good for his health. His counter argument being that the best sandwich you could get was a Pot Noodle one but Lucy wasn't having it.
"Sorry to interrupt but do you mind if you and your husband keep it down? Some other shoppers are complaining." One of the shop assistants informed them. They must have been speaking louder than they thought.
"Right sorry." Lucy replied as she once again pondered about the whole mistaking them as a couple but putting it down to being one of those things.
"We're not actually married, you know." Lee said, feeling the need to point out this fact as the assistant nodded her head.
"You sure act like it." And with that she stalked off as Lee and Lucy continued their shopping in quietness. He did manage to sneak that extra pack of Pot Noodle in. Did they really act like a couple?
Lucy's suspicions grew when it happened the third time. It was later on the same day when the pair were sat in the park, on a bench with a packet of chips each. They weren't speaking and they weren't interacting until Lee had finished his packet of chips and had decided to steal one of Lucy's.
"Hey give it back!" Lucy exclaimed childishly as Lee held the chip higher and out of her reach as her arm stayed outstretched.
"Nope!"
"But you've had yours." She tried but all Lee did was shake his head. Settling back down onto her seat.
Turning her back slightly away from him she pretended to pout and are her chips in silence as Lee scooted closer to her, chip still held between his fingers. Once he was close enough Lucy turned back around and took the chip off of him as his face showed hints of being betrayed.
"Well that was sneaky." he told her as she nodded her head.
Their conversation ended there as they listened to a jogging couple fun past muttering,"don't they make a cute couple?"
The fourth incident was when Lucy had decidedly gotten fed up of the remarks. They were back in the flat, the both of them bickering over the mess that had appeared in the living room. Lucy blaming it on Lee as he defended himself by saying there was more than one person living in the flat. Then Daisy walked into the flat and glanced up from her phone, to see the pair arguing.
"You two are like a married couple." Lucy stopped what was about to come out of her mouth next. That remark was the final straw and she had to do something, anything about it.
Lucy watched for a few minutes as Lee conversed with Daisy to see what she came over for. Maybe it was because of the remarks or maybe it was her brain finally admitting it but she could honestly say that she loved him. That had come as a bit of a shock to her. Still in a daydream she absentmindedly waved goodbye to Daisy as Lee came to stand opposite her again.
"Why aren't we?" Was the question that escaped her mouth as Lee looked at her slightly confused.
"Why aren't we, what?" He asked as Lucy shifted slightly nervously on the spot. She didn't expect it to be her that would finally get things out in the open. She knew Lee liked her, Daisy and Tim had told her enough times.
"Why aren't we married?"
Lucy watched as Lee's mouth dropped open slightly before snapping back shut, his hand going to play with the end of his t-shirt. Lucy couldn't blame him for being nervous, she was too. Lucy didn't know why she went with married when they weren't even a couple.
"Umm..why do you ask that?"
"It's just today with everyone making a remark about us being married... Why aren't we?"
Lee had now found the perfect opportunity to try and tell her how he felt without actually saying it,"because you don't love me." Lee began to make his way towards the bathroom but was stopped by Lucy's hand on his arm.
Turning back around he heard her answer,"who says I don't?"
"Well you've never actually said it and Tim keeps on telling me it's impossible..."
He was cut off by Lucy pulling him down and into a kiss, her arms winding around his neck as his wrapped around her back, pulling her closer. He didn't think it was possible for her to like him but here they were, kissing in the flat.
Pulling back Lucy looked him in the eye,"so, why aren't we married?"
And that's when Lee knew he had to face up to his fear of commitment if he wanted to be with Lucy,"because I haven't proposed."
Two things that day changed that led to the change in their lives. The remarks about them being married that were continuously said within the space of twelve hours and one question. One question that cemented this change...
Why aren't we married?
