Raven could not figure out what she hated more; her fears of another possible 'brother' in the crowd with a copy of her powers or this goddamn song that was playing for the fourth time that night. No matter how many times it played, Raven didn't think she would ever truly be a fan of Timmy Trumpet or Savage, let alone a collaboration between the two.
She had to say though that she stood alone in that respect. As soon as the song ruptured through the school hall the first time it played, Beast Boy was quick to make it to the dance floor to show the teens' his dance moves. It did not take long though before his erratic dancing earned him an isolated spot in the centre of the dance floor. Raven thought they were going to try and play it quiet once they were inside. She had to admit though that it was a foolish thought, considering the great 'Teen Titans' were making what was classified by Cyborg as a guest appearance.
She had to admit though that Cyborg and Starfire had taken the situation in stride. Cyborg was more than comfortable with navigating himself through different groups with a smile and even showing small demonstrations of his gear, to the delights of everyone there. Starfire herself had a group of boys that continued to follow her every word and step. From pimple faced awkward youths to budding jocks, Starfire paid attention to each one and accepted their intense enthusiasm with a gracious smile.
Raven herself stayed glued to a nearby wall and kept a scan over the crowd. After some small talk with a few students, Raven found a spot as far away from the raging emotions of the dancing mob as she could find. It was enough that she could barely keep her mind off Robin and his lips on hers...
Someone's punch next to her burst in their hand, causing them to squeal
"Sorry," Raven muttered and moved slowly down the wall before they noticed her.
Away from the student shaking red punch off their hands, Raven moved down the wall until she bumped into a smaller figure next to her. Before she could open her mouth, the poor student said a quick, tiny, "Sorry."
Raven looked down at the hunching boy leaning against the wall and almost fell sideways in shock. Through the flashing coloured lights, she saw a pale boy with black eyes staring towards the floor. His black hair hung to strategically hide his forehead but Raven didn't need two guesses to what she would find there. Bracing herself for a fight, she was surprised when Jacob timidly said, "you were looking for me, weren't you?"
"Yes," Raven replied steadily, her eyes darting to her team mates to see their positions.
But Jacob simply nodded his head and replied, "I thought so."
That stunned Raven a little, so she simply questioned, "so you know? About-"
"Yes," Jacob interrupted, his eyes darting to the left away from Raven, "they've been looking for me for a while now. I didn't..."
He paused, his eyes quickly darting around the room before he said in a low tone, "I didn't want them to find me."
Raven paused, unsure and frankly surprised that the last threat to her team appeared to be a kid who didn't have the courage to look her in the eye. She scrunched her eye brows for a moment, trying to think of every interrogation lesson Robin had given them. One look back at Jacob though, with his too large second hand suit hanging over his shaking hands, and she knew it wouldn't work to pressure him.
"Why are you not hiding from me now?" she asked instead.
Jacob shuffled his feet slightly and looked up at Raven for just a moment before looking away.
"My Mum," he began, "she told me how you were like me. You were born with these powers too, but you used them to become a Titan. You were one of the good ones even though our father is..."
He cleared his throat, unable to say the name and continued, "she said if the daughter of him could be an hero then I can at least be a good man. She always told me that he and this power does not define me."
Raven smiled softly down at him and replied gently, "your mother sounds like a wonderful lady."
"She is," Jacob agreed, finally looking up at her to smile, "I think she would be sad if she knew I wasn't coming to the prom either. She does really know that I don't have too many..."
Instead of finishing, he simply waved his arm in front of him to indicate the lack of people close to him and became embarrassed again. Raven glanced down at him but noticed that he was avoiding her eye again. She assumed he'd told her more than he wanted to.
Raven bit her lip for a moment in thought before adding, "I know how that feels. Sometimes it is just easier to stay away from the emotion."
Jacob glanced up at her, his eyes wider as he quickly demanded, "how do you deal with it?"
Raven looked down and couldn't help but smile down at him. He was staring up at her with wide hopeful eyes and Raven did not need to be an expert to know why. This must have been the first time he'd ever encountered someone who knew exactly what he was going through. In the back of her mind she wondered if Jesse and Jared also felt the same?
"Well," Raven began, "I often meditate. Have you ever meditated?"
Jacob simply shook his head, "when I get overwhelmed, I try to block it out. Like finding a dark hiding place. Somewhere quiet where I can't feel them."
Raven nodded in understanding, "well, I could teach you if you would like?"
Jacob paused before nodding, a small smile crossing his lips. Raven couldn't help but let relief wash over her, believing that whatever drove Jesse and Jared to Trigon's bidding had not affected Jacob. Although the pitch black eyes were unnerving, Raven was beginning to see another regular teenage boy shinning through.
"Could you teach me other things?" Jacob asked, his eyes darting again to see if anyone was around to overhear or see them.
"Like what?" Raven asked, unsure if she wished to teach him exactly what their powers were capable of.
"Well, I've always wanted to get better at this. It helps when I need to get away from everyone."
He held out his hand to Raven and squeezing his fist tightly, his hand appeared to evaporate and disappear from sight. Raven's eyebrows rose in surprise as she gazed at his now invisible hand until he released his grip and his hand materialised before her again. She had a strong idea now though why it must have been so hard to track him down.
"You see Jacob," Raven began, "I'm not too sure if I can help you with that. I've never been able to do that."
"Really?" Jacob replied, his eyebrows dropping in confusion.
"Guess that's your special trick, isn't it?"
Jacob's shock changed to a large grin as he stared down at his hand, nervously rubbing it with his other hand. Raven looked up in time to see Starfire sending her confused stares and Cyborg making his way over to the two of them with concern etched over his face.
"Hey Rae," Cyborg called as he walked to the two of them, placing a hand on her shoulder and a wary eye on Jacob, "whose your new friend?"
Raven glanced back at Jacob and introduced, "Cyborg, this is Jacob. He's just been telling me how he has been hiding from us all this time."
"Really?" Cyborg asked, his eyes turning to Jacob as he demonstrated his invisibility with his hand again.
"Impressive," Cyborg agreed, his eyes looking up to meet Jacob's as Jacob's own eyes darted away.
He glanced down at Raven to catch her eye, the concern and suspicion clear in his eyes. Raven gave him a tight lipped smile with a small nod. She knew somewhere inside that it was silly to judge someone within minutes of meeting them. Seeing Jacob in front of her though, he was simply anxious and young. Like many others in the room, he seemed unsure of himself and Raven wanted to help.
Turning away from Jacob as Cyborg grinned down at him, Raven pulled her communicator from a small pocket in her dress and quickly typed in a message. Snapping her communicator shut, she glanced towards Starfire across the room as she opened her own communicator to read what Raven had sent. She knew Jacob was not a fan of crowds, but Raven hoped he would not mind this boost to his popularity. She hoped it was at least something positive he could tell his mother.
Starfire with her horde of followers made their way across the room while everyone else kept their eyes on where the Teen Titans appeared to be gathering. Stopping in front of Jacob, she help out her hand to him and asked with a sweet smile, "may we please have this dance friend Jacob?"
No one seemed more shocked than Jacob, who was finding it impossible to avoid all the eyes around him. His gaze eventually landed on Raven, who gave him a gentle smile and an encouraging nod. With a deep gulp (and a rattle of a nearby snack table that everyone except Raven failed to notice), he took Starfire's hand and followed her to the dance floor for a slow Taylor Swift song.
Raven tapped Starfire briefly as they began to walk away and mouthed a 'thanks' to her. Starfire responded by giving her a wink and turning her attention back to Jacob. Her attention turned back to Cyborg as he barked out a short laugh, his gaze towards Starfire's admirers as they separated in despair.
"Now before you give me the full run down on your new friend, how about a dance Rae?" Cyborg grinned, his eyes now void of the concern that seemed to be flooding them before.
Raven glanced down at her communicator for a moment and back up to Cyborg, "just give me a few minutes."
Cyborg smiled slyly down at his friend and gave her a knowing nudge as he walked away, "well don't be long now."
Raven let out a deep sigh as she stared down at the communicator in her hand, feeling her nerves begin to get the best of her again. It didn't help that the lyrics in the song were so painfully aware of her feelings.
"You can hear it in the silence.
You can feel it on the way home.
You can see it with the lights out.
You are in love, true love,
You are in love."
Gathering her courage, she quickly typed the call and waited. Her leader's face appeared almost immediately on the screen in front of her.
"Raven? What's wrong?" Robin immediately asked, oblivious to his matted hair.
Raven smiled at him and assured him, "nothing is wrong."
"You found Jacob then?" he asked as he adjusted himself to sit up on the couch he had been laying on for the last few hours.
"Yea," Raven replied as she leaned back against the wall, "he's just a kid, like I was when I began to understand my destiny. He's just scared..."
Robin nodded before asking gently, "and are you okay?"
Raven stared back into his masked eyes and smiled, "I'm okay. Without Jacob, this whole thing might be over soon. Whatever they are planning, they need both of us. And now, without Jacob, we have a chance against them."
"We always had a chance," Robin reassured her, "because we had you."
Raven's cheeks flushed in pleasure as she watched Robin's own face redden at his words. He coughed nervously and to get off subject asked, "so I can expect the whole story when you get back home?"
Raven nodded her head and glanced up at the dance floor where Cyborg seemed to trying to awkwardly shuffle in place next to Beast Boy's over the top swaying to the slow song. Starfire was guiding Jacob slowly with her hands on his shoulders, Jacob's own face still flushed and stunned. She smiled, content to watch her friends relax after everything she had put them through.
"Raven," Robin's voice brought her attention back to him, "you should go and join them."
Raven nodded in agreement, ready to end their video call when Robin quick spoke up, "by the way Raven, you really do look beautiful tonight."
Raven's cheeks tinted as she whispered a thanks before adding her own small confession, "I wish you could have been here tonight."
Robin gave a grin along with his blush before replying, "Me too."
