Chapter twenty six - I'm Not Scared!

Midna toppled over on her feet as a roar shook the castle and cradled Clyde's bright soul in her hands. She had been all over the castle looking for it; yet had found it on the top of a pedestal in the throne room like it was bait for a trap.

Or perhaps a trap not meant for her.

She feared for her husband, she could see it; him stuck with protecting Emily or saving himself. She knew which one he would choose. This was why they were here, Clyde had hurt Link yet because of his heart, did he forgive. Something that Clyde, Samuel or Emily could never understand. Midna looked into the shining golden orb she held; Clyde was hidden in the dust and magic within there, but not only did she see her oldest son, but a young Link too.

She continued to stare, the longer and harder she looked the more she saw him within Clyde. He may not have the forgiving heart, the strength or the wisdom, but he had the willpower to continue.

They all did.

"You going to stare at it all day or give it back?" Daku asked putting a hand on her shoulder

"Daku!" Midna shrieked slapping him on the cheek "I have enough when Link does that!"

"Sorry, I learnt a few of his tricks." Daku shrugged "Now is not the time to see how close your kids are to Link."

"I know, but I worry that Link might get over protective." Midna sighed "Like his father to him at that age."

"He just gave Emily his Clawshots; I don't think that will happen." Daku sniggered as a candle dropped from the chandelier onto Daku's head "Ow; I'm not used to being solid."

"Do you know where the boys are?" Midna whispered as a pillar began cracking next to them, Daku picked up on it straight away

"Outside the castle. You need to get them out of the grounds totally; this place is going to come down!" Daku shouted as the chain holding the chandelier shuddered and creaked above them

"Are you sure?" Midna asked jumping to her feet for the open window she had flown through, the castle quaked again causing them to drop on their knees

"Trust me; Dark is not holding back anymore, one of them will die today." Daku whispered helping her onto the ledge and pointing in the direction of her sons "And even if Link does manage to defeat him, Dark will burst into flames and this entire place is covered in oil!"

"That's why it's so wet?!" Midna shrieked, Daku gripped her hand

"Take care of your sons. I'll see to Emily. Link can take care of himself for a little while." Daku whispered stepping back a little "My word as a gentleman, trust me."

Link yowled as he was bashed into the wall, his paws pushing against Dark's head, his hind legs wrapped in a tongue ready to toss him upward into his mouth, Link bared his teeth and grinded them into Dark's tongue, making him howl and drop his prey with a thump on the floor

Dogs do not land on their legs all the time. Link moaned rolling forward as Dark's tail continued to crush the pillar, the rattle was driving his hearing crazy, he could barely think for the noise. Dark hissed and circled around him, creating a small cage of scales, Link stepped up, Hylian again, sword in hand. Dark opened his mouth and spat out purple venom; burning the remains of the ripped carpet and scorching the tiles underneath it. Link drew his shield as Dark spat out more, aiming to burn Link's head off, but Daisy's duels had trained him up to constant shield bashing. Even so, the force of Dark's onslaught was pushing him against the wall. Link edged along it, his shield arm weakening and shaking but he was so close to Dark's tail that he could slice it with his sword

"No chance, mutt!" Dark snarled swatting him away like a fly

Emily rubbed her head and glanced up at the shred of light from above, she had been clinging onto the Clawshots when they had fallen. Emily searched her pouch for her lantern and lit it, trying to stay calm and rational was hard for an eight year old but her father had shown her how to master her fear, now was the time to put it into practice.

"Zephyr?" Emily shouted, her voice echoing back

"Get off me!" Zephyr shouted pushing a tile off his leg, Emily nearly knocked him out with her lantern with fright

"We have to get back up there." Emily mumbled attaching the lantern to her belt and aiming the Clawshot upward

"There's nothing to grab onto." Zephyr sighed folding his arms, "We're under the castle."

"The catacombs! Of course, you bury people under the castle!" Emily shouted putting a hand on the wall, Zephyr shrieked as a rat ran across a small shelf in the wall just in sight of Emily's lantern

"Oh, Goddesses, I landed on a grave!" Zephyr whined seeing a dent in a coffin they landed on

Emily held the lantern up; the stone walls were dusty and decorated with cobwebs that even spiders refused to use; there were three grey coffins, all on stone pedestals in the centre of the room, covered in a thick layer of dust. The lanterns on the sides of the wall were long burned out and the small pots on the floor carried dead flowers, death by non-watering. Emily walked up to the shelf the rat had crossed to see it empty apart from a couple of thin books and dust. Nothing much in here.

"Come on." Emily muttered searching for a way out, spotting a looming tunnel across the room

"I don't want to, it's scary enough!" Zephyr whined

"Fine, stay here in the dark. Perhaps the Ghoul Rats will snack on you." Emily laughed; she was scared to, but did not want to show him that

"Ghoul Rats?" Zephyr whined, looking at his feet as the light of Emily's lantern began to disappear

"Yeah, Daddy told me about them. They are invisible to the human eye and like to cling onto you-Argh!" Emily screamed

"Hang on, Emily!" Zephyr yelled charging up the tunnel

"Knew I could get you here faster." Emily chortled appearing beside him

"Don't do that!" Zephyr whined as they came into another room, this one filled with skeletons and bones of the dead. Zephyr let out a shriek and clung onto Emily's shoulders as the squeak of a rat echoed in the room. Emily rolled her eyes and twisted his wrist back

"Look, it's scary, fine, I get it. But if you keep shouting, you are going to frighten yourself for no reason!" Emily roared

"But what if there's ghosts or Ghoul Rats or-" Zephyr wailed, Emily slapped him across the cheek

"I've had my fair share of ghosts, monsters and brothers to put up with. Now shut up!" Emily growled drawing her dagger and tossing it over to him "Have that to protect yourself; right now, I'm listening for air."

"Air?" Zephyr mumbled taking the dagger in his hand "You really hurt."

"Where there is a wind, there is a way out." Emily recited "Daddy told me that."

"Did 'Daddy' ever teach you anything about manners?" Zephyr grumbled, Emily glared at him. "Alright, I get it. I'll be quiet."

Emily stood still with her hands by her sides, her ears flicking back and forth, searching for a breeze or the howl of a beckoning gale, instead something dripped on her face, it felt like water but it smelt strong, like her brother's stink bombs on Simon last week. She held up the lantern as high as she could to find the source of the dripping liquid as more dropped down, making her lantern began to hiss at her.

A trapdoor.

"Boost me up." Emily ordered clicking her fingers after the Clawshot bounced from it.

"No!" Zephyr grumbled turning his back, he could feel Emily's glare on the back of his neck, was she coming to kill him? "Okay, okay, I'm coming."

Zephyr let her climb on his shoulders to reach the handle of the trapdoor but they were to short, Emily scanned the room and spotted a spear in a hand of a skeleton, she jumped down and prised it out of the skeleton's hand before scooting up Zephyr's shoulders once more

"Emily…uh…" Zephyr whined as Emily pushed hard against the spear on the trapdoor

"What? Oh that is cool! Who knew, right?" Emily giggled as the skeleton stood up

"Are you scared of anything?" Zephyr moaned

"It's a Stalfos! You have Stalfos under your castle!" Emily cheered jumping down and taking a small notebook out of her pocket "Dad found them all when he was a knight. Didn't leave us one as a pet or anything."

"We don't have time for reading material!" Zephyr complained as Emily flicked through the pages

"Wait a minute." Emily sighed putting a finger up to halt the Stalfos leaning over her and to tell Zephyr to be quiet. "Okay, I'm good to go." Emily said with a smile; she slapped the book shut and batted the Stalfos in the face with the spearhead, sending it back a few inches before searching her pouch for something

"Emily!" Zephyr whined

"It's my first time! Give me a moment." Emily spoke with a grunt

"That's a bomb." Zephyr gulped as she held up a small, blue object in her right hand

"Don't tell Daddy. I took a few of these from Sam. But it's the only way to get rid of Stalfos properly." Emily sighed smacking the creature in the head with the spear again, making it blink and reach for the place where its nose should or used to be, Emily lit the bomb with her lantern and threw it upward, the Stalfos laughed at her as she stood firm. Zephyr brought a hand up to his face and curled up into a ball

"You missed!" Zephyr said bracing himself for the explosion

"Oh, I didn't miss." Emily cackled as the bomb exploded. When the smoke cleared the Stalfos was gone and the trapdoor was swinging open

"You're scary." Zephyr spoke swallowing hard; Emily wiped her face on her tunic hat, the same way Link did when he was a little too close to his children when they had bombs explode.

"Come on, let's get up there!" Emily smirked pulling Zephyr up to his feet "I don't understand why Daddy doesn't let me use these."

"I can think of a couple of reasons." Zephyr groaned as Emily stood on his head to clamber up to the room above.

"I know you are in here somewhere, mutt! I can smell your fear." Dark hissed, Link had vanished on him, the mammal, be it Hylian or wolf, was very good at hiding, even without the aid to cover his light soul. Dark let his tongue taste the floor, Link's footprints were as clear as smoke and the sound of his beating heart was like a sonar. "Found you, mutt!" Dark shrieked slithering up to a fallen chandelier. Link held his breath as the black tongue crept into his hiding spot, just a little further.

Link brought the sword down and Dark let out a scream as Link rolled out from under the chandelier holding the end of Dark's tongue. He lifted his sword up against Dark squirting yet more venom at him when an explosion boomed against Dark's left eye

Both adults turned their heads sharply to find Emily aiming a bomb to hit Dark's face.

"Leave Daddy alone!" Emily shouted as Dark coiled his tail around her and Zephyr

"Foos! You can't defeat me on bombs and bravery, now you wi know the meaning of pain!" Dark roared showing his fangs
Emily made fists and showed no fear to the beast that towered over her

"Emily!" Link screamed jumping off the ground and latching onto the right fang. "Let go of them or I will pull your fang out!"

Dark loosened his grip on the children with a defeated roar.

"Daku!" Link cried pushing his hands against the roof of Dark's mouth

"I'm on it!" Daku replied, placing a hand on the arm of each child and vanishing in a puff of smoke

"Daddy!" Emily shrieked as her father clung for dear life onto the beast's fang as he threw him forward.
