Chapter 26
Snow never drove so fast in her life since she remembers living in Storybrooke, she probably broke every limit speed and passed all the red lights that came her way, but right now, in this instance that wasn't important and no one would care about it, there were more pressing issues at stake in that exact instant and her goal was to reach the hospital as fast as she could. Henry was sat beside her talking, more precisely whispering, to his newborn sister.
"It's going to be alright, our mom is a fighter and she will be ok, she would never leave us, she loves us too much to leave us alone." The boy said to his sister kissing her forehead. Snow couldn't avoid listening and those words made her heart shrink, Henry was right, Regina would never willingly leave them, but this time she wasn't so sure if the brunette would be able to survive her injury. In the Enchanted Forest Snow had seen too many people die with the same kind of wound, that arrow had gone through her body really close to her heart and removing it was a really difficult task alone and add to that removing it without killing her that would require a miracle.
She shook her head trying to push those thoughts away from her mind, she needed to believe that everything would be fine. "We are almost there." She said out loud, more to reassure herself then the others present in the car.
Everyone on the hospital was running around making the preparations for Regina's operation as fast as they could because time wasn't on their side, they needed to be even faster because Regina's state was getting worse by the minute. Emma had refused to leave Regina alone. When the nurses came to get Regina ready for the OR the blonde refused to leave, she argued with the two nurses and when Whale tried to intervene he was almost punched in the face. With no other choice Whale decided that the best thing to do was prepare Emma to go in to the OR with them. She got a new change of clothe and a new surgical blue suite.
She was already waiting inside the OR for Regina. When the nurses finally brought her in Emma stood by her side holding her right hand, because the left one had the IV needle on it. Her now gloved hand kept caressing Regina's face "Please baby fight for me, for our kids, I need you to help me breathe, I need you so my heart can keep on beating." Tears kept rolling down her face, she desperately needed to see those brown beautiful eyes again, she needed to see those plump lips curve to smile at her once more.
"Come on baby, this can't be how our story ends, we haven't had enough time, we haven't enjoyed our happy ending yet. Show me who you are once more, a stubborn infuriating pig headed that never gives up, never let's go of what she wants, show me you're the one with the most resilient heart." She placed a soft kiss in her wife's forehead "I believe in you, I love you."
Whale was at the OR door but he decided to let Emma say whatever she needed to say to her wife, after all they had gone for so much pain in the last few hours that even him that was a little cold hearted believed that the blonde deserved a chance to speak from her heart in what could possibly be the last time. Once he thought she was finished he cleared his throat in order to make his presence known, the blonde looked at him and he hold her gaze "Sheriff its time, we are going to begin now, are you sure you want to stay here?"
"Yes I'm sure, I'm not leaving her." She stated with certainty in her voice.
"Do as you wish." He began to get ready and waited for the nurses to get in their positions. "Here goes nothing." He thought to himself.
Right outside of the OR was David, he had brought a few chairs with him, despite the pain he was feeling on his ribs he wasn't about to leave his daughter all alone and he knew that as soon as his wife arrived she would stay there by his side waiting for news on Regina's state. Overall he had brought four chairs in case anyone else decided to come and keep them company while they waited. Now that Regina had a lot more friends than she let herself believe she had, he didn't know how many people would show up.
Outside of the hospital a very worried and hurried Snow stopped the yellow bug and rushed the fairies to get out of the vehicle, she and Henry weren't really in the mood to be all kind and nice with the slow ladies. Once they were gone Snow took hold of Amy and ran as fast as she could with the boy right beside her. She quickly stopped at information balcony to ask where Regina was and as soon she knew what she desired they both sprinted towards the said OR. When she got there, she saw her husband seated in a chair looking at the ceiling.
"David…" he looked at her. "Snow you're finally here." He got up and approached his wife.
"Isn't our granddaughter beautiful?" she asked him.
"She's the most beautiful little girl." He said grabbing Amy's little hand. "What about you champ?" he asked Henry ruffling his hair.
"I'm ok. Grandpa do you have any news about my mom?" he asked worried.
"They just got in fifteen minutes ago Henry but I'm sure that as soon as they have any news they will send a nurse to inform us." He said ruffling his grandson's hair. "Come on, let's go seat and wait." The three of them got seated, all admiring the little girl in Snow's arms.
On another floor of the hospital a little war was developing. "Listen little lady, she's my granddaughter how dare you lie in my face? Get out of the way right now or so help me god…" Granny was really pissed off, first they didn't want to tell her about Ruby and now they were refusing to tell her how Regina was doing and what had happened to her.
"I'm sorry Granny but I cannot let you out of your room, Dr. Whale said…" the older woman cut her right there.
"I don't give a shit to what that wanna be doctor says, I'm going to that OR now and don't you dare stand in my way." And with that she pushed the small nurse to one side and walked off the room. She decided to stop by Ruby's room first so she changed her route. She knocked once at her granddaughter's room door and let herself in.
"Hey grandma, shouldn't you be in bed?" Ruby asked worried.
"Nah, I'm fine. How are you?"
"I'm ok, with a little pain but nothing I can't handle."
"Good." The older woman said. Ruby was looking at her grandma and she could see that she wasn't telling her something, so she decided to try and figure out what was it although she had a bad feeling that it involved one of her friends.
"Are Emma and Regina back? I need to talk to Regina." The girl said, supposing that they had defeated the imp by now.
"What do you want to talk about with Regina that is so important to you?" Granny asked, thinking if she should or not tell Ruby what had happened.
"She saved me Granny, I'm alive because of her." A tear found her way out of Granny's eye and rolled down her cheek. "What's wrong? Something happened to her?" Ruby asked, her anxiety state rising.
"Honey, she was able to send that son of a bitch through a portal but…"
"But what?" Ruby screamed, demanding to know what had happened to her friend.
"She was badly injured, she is now in the OR." Once she finished talking Ruby's face color went completely white and her body froze. "No, that's not fair." The young girl said coming out of her frozen state. "Take me to her." She demanded her grandma.
"Ruby you're not going anywhere. I'm going upstairs to try and get some news and as soon as I know something I'll come and tell you, I promise." Her voice was sure and her decision was finally, Ruby knew that it would be a waste of time to argue.
"Ok. But as soon you have news please come and tell me." She received a nodding sign from her grandma that made her way out of her room immediately after placing a tender kiss on her forehead.
When Granny finally got to the right OR she saw Henry, David and Snow with Amy in her arms all sat there outside the OR's door. She came closer to them "How is she? Is there any news?" they all looked at her.
"She was in a really bad shape but we don't know nothing yet, it's only been twenty five minutes now." David said. At that the older woman took a seat on the only chair left. Another ten minutes had gone by when Archie and Leroy appeared. They made no questions, they simply sat down on the floor and waited.
The waiting was driving all of them nuts, David was struggling to keep on staying still, because every time he tried to move faster than he should his ribs would remind him to stay put. Snow and Granny were sharing Amy's holding time, Leroy decided that pacing around was the best option for him so he kept on walking back and forward. Archie stayed seated on the floor staring at the ceiling and Henry had fallen asleep in his chair. Regina was on the OR for one hour and twenty minutes now and no one had cared enough to come and tell them something. All and all waiting sucked.
After one hour and twenty minutes of watching Whale and his team work on Regina, Emma was seriously getting even more worried, she couldn't stop observing Whale's facial expressions and his face right now didn't look good, his forehead was shinning with sweat that one of the nurses constantly cleaned. She just couldn't keep quite anymore.
"Whale what the hell is going on?"
He slightly looked at her before returning his full attention to Regina "I don't know if I'll be able to save her…" he stopped to take a deep breath "…there was too much damage but I already fixed all the damage surrounding the heart but…"
"But what, tell me." She demanded.
"The arrow, when I remove the rest of the arrow I will probably damage her aortic artery and I won't be able to fix it." He said and she could hear the nervousness in his tone.
"Are you completely sure?" she pressed.
"Yes I am, unless you want to fix it yourself Sheriff." His tone was filled with irony, what could she possibly do to help him, was the thought that invaded his mind.
After a few moments of silence she had already decided what should be done "Whale…"
Once again he looked at her "What?"
"What if when you take the arrow out I magically heal her artery, you think it could work?" She was wishing he would say yes, say that it would work. She couldn't lose Regina, she could lose almost everything but not her. Her gaze was fixed on Whale, waiting for him to answer her.
Whale's brain was spinning, the Sheriff's idea was absurd but the more he thought about it the more it made sense to him that, that insane idea was most probably the only way he had to save the Mayor's life, he took another long deep breath and made his decision. "This is crazy but it's better than nothing. Listen to me carefully Sheriff, you're idea is insane but it also may be the only way to save your wife's life so, as soon as I take this arrow out you have to immediately heal that artery, that's the heart's major artery…" he shook his head "…I really hope you know what you're doing."
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing, I rather die than live without her."
"Ok, so we're going to do this on my count. One, two, three…" and he rapidly pushed the arrow out making a deep cut on the artery, but the blonde immediately put her hand on top of the most important heart in her live and a healing white light began streaming out of her hand and enveloping the damaged artery. After a minute her job was done and she slowly removed her hand.
"All done doctor. Just make sure she's all good." Her voice sounded more confident than she felt but she deep down knew that all was alright, it had to be.
Whale was completely focused on what he was doing, he looked everywhere to be one hundred percent sure that everything was fixed and that there wasn't any bleeding. After a few more minutes he was satisfied and certain that all present had done their best to keep the Mayor alive. "Let's close. Nurse Patsy, can you please inform the people outside that all went well and that we are almost done?"
"Of course Doctor, on my way."
"Is it going to leave an ugly scar?" Emma asked.
"It's not going to be pretty, after all we had to open her up to reach her heart." He said honestly. "The wound on her back after it is completely healed you almost won't notice, but this one it's going to be big and not that pretty as I said before." Emma nodded and went into deep thought.
"After you're done, can I close the wound so it won't leave a scar?"
"Be my guest, after all it's always better to not have that kind of scar, it is a constant reminder of all that happened." Emma nodded once again and waited for her turn to help once again.
As soon as the OR door opened they all almost jumped towards the nurse that was making her way out, even Henry woke up with all the sudden movement around him, and as soon as he understood what was happening he made his way through the front and was the first one to speak.
"How's my mom?"
"She's going to be fine, everything went as best as it could. They are almost finished inside."
"Are you sure everything is alright?" Snow insisted.
"It was hard but I can assure you we did our best." And with that the nurse made her way back inside, leaving behind a small group that began cheering with happiness.
Henry took his little sister from Granny's arms and softly spoke to the sleeping princess "She's going to be alright, I told you she would never leave us." Little Amy even in her sleep was like she understood what her older brother had just said because her closed mouth curved on the corners leaving there a small smile.
Snow hugged David as slow and carefully as she could so she wouldn't hurt him. "I'm so relieved, thank god the operation went well."
"Regina is firm and resolute, she will survive, she wouldn't leave her family behind without a fight." David stated.
"I'm going to go tell Ruby that Regina survived the operation." Granny said. Snow and David nodded and watched her go. As they turned they saw Henry lovingly holding Amy.
"We should probably take them home, it's really late and soon it will be time to feed Amy." David said to his wife.
"You're right but I wanted to talk to Emma before we leave. Let's just wait a few more minutes." Snow said and David agreed.
"Snow we'll be going home now, if there's any news please let us know." Archie said.
"Don't worry Archie. Thank you for coming." After that Archie and Leroy left, only the Charming family stayed behind. Thankfully after ten more minutes Emma made her way out of the OR.
"Ma." Henry said excitedly.
"Hey kid." She came closer to him and kissed his forehead. Seeing little Amy in his arms she couldn't resist and took hold of her baby daughter in between her own two loving arms. "Hey my princess, I hope you're having sweet dreams. Your mom and I will soon be both with you, like a big and happy family, you'll see." She softly kissed her baby so she wouldn't wake her up.
Snow was so moved that she almost let a tear escape her "Emma it's almost time for her to eat and Henry should be in bed, do you mind if we take them home with us?"
Emma looked at her mother "You know what, spend the night in our house, we have everything there for Amy and Henry can sleep in his own bed, it's been a tough day for him too. You can sleep in the guest room, it's the one on top of the stairs first door to the right and Amy's room is the one on the end of the hall to the right, it's the one closer to my bedroom."
"Ok sweetie if you think that's best." Snow simply said.
"Yes I do. You should take the bug I know it's filled with stuff but don't worry I'll unpack it whenever I can. They're going to take Regina to her room in a little while and I'm going to spend the night here so take care of my precious gifts from life." She said kissing Amy once more before giving her to her mother and giving Henry his goodnight kiss too.
It was eight in the morning when Emma woke up, Whale had placed Regina in a ample room with a couch and two chairs. Her back was killing her, despite of the fact the couch was actually comfortable it was a little small for her size but it was better than nothing. She stood up and stretched, after a big yawn she came closer to Regina's bed, leaned in and softly kissed her wife's lips.
"Good morning sunshine." She said to a still sleeping Regina "Please open your eyes beautiful, please just give me a chance to love you one more time. I'm nothing without you." She took hold of Regina's hand and gently kissed her. She pulled a chair and seated as close as she could to Regina, never releasing her hand. Her eyes never leaving the brunette's face, waiting for the moment she would be able to see those brown pools again.
Thirty minutes had passed and her gaze was still locked on the brunette's beautiful features, her heart was beating faster, she just wanted Regina to open her eyes. And that was when suddenly she heard "It's rude to stare." Regina said as she lazily opened her eyes.
Emma jumped from her seat "Baby I love you so much." And without thinking it she just leaned in and kissed the brunette's lips gently.
"I love you too Emma." Regina lifted her hand and placed a blonde lock behind Emma's ear "How is our baby? Henry?" they were the first thing in her mind.
"Amy and Henry are ok, they're with my parents, I asked them to spend the night in our house so Henry could sleep in his own bed and because they had all they needed for Amy there, hope you don't mind."
"It's fine, you did good." She said placing a hand over her heart, a movement that didn't escape Emma.
"Are you in pain?" the blonde asked worried.
"It hurts a little and so does my shoulder…" she didn't have time to finish her sentence because Emma was out the door like a flash. After a few minutes she saw her blonde wife return pulling Whale after her.
"Good morning Madame Mayor, you're wife here was saying that you're hurting, well that's normal after all you've been through but I'm going to give you something for the pain now and you'll have to take a few other pills too so we don't get the risk of an infection. In an hour or so a nurse will come to change your bandage from your shoulder." He made a quick check-up on her "You look fine, but I'll still need to have you here for a few more days just to be sure."
"What? No way I want to go home, I have a baby to take care of…" she was screaming but Emma interrupted her.
"Baby you can't look after our kids if you're not well, so please just listen to Whale this time." Regina was pouting just like Henry when he was denied something, it was kind of funny, she never did this kind of thing.
"Fine, but as soon as you realize I'm more than fine I want to go home." She said directly to Whale.
He raised his hands in sign of surrendering "I promise that if you are one hundred percent I'll let you go home. I'll be stopping by later." He made his way out of the room closing the door behind him.
"Emma can you please call your mom and ask her to bring my babies?" her eyes were shining with hope.
"Of course I can baby, everything for you. Love you."
"Love you too." Regina answered back holding her wife's hand. Emma slowly closed the gap between them joining their lips in a soft but passionate kiss.
