Chapter 26

Tanith

"I'm worried about Fletcher" she whispered to Ghastly as they set out to collect some food.

"What are you worried about?" He whispered back

"Well Saracen said that he should have started getting better by now, I'm worried about what was on the blade that he was stabbed with"

"What do you think was on it?"

"I'm not sure but I don't think it was anything good"

"Hummmm"

"What are you Hummmming at?" cracking a smile

"Something happened like that to a friend of mine a couple of years ago"

"Did he survive?" she said in a voice filled with hope.

"Ermmm, no it killed him instantly"

"Oh"

"But it wasn't by a wound and I don't think it is the same thing though"

"Okay, I think there is some berries over here" she changed the subject

"We could try and catch something and cook it"

"The redhoods might see the smoke and come and investigate or take the mortals to the palace" shaking her head. They walked in silence till they reached a clump of trees.

"Hey do you think w will be able to find some apples here?" Tanith asked

"I should think so"

"It makes you wonder doesn't it"

"Wonder about what?" as they got further in to the trees

"Why the mortals stay, they could go anywhere and get away from the Redhoods and Mevolent but instead they stay on his doorstep"

"Their scared, I think some of them think that no matter how far they go from the Palace he will always find them"

"Know the feeling" she chuckled

"There's some apples" he pointed into one of the trees "Need a boost"

"Nah, I got it" he looked puzzled at her. Tanith just laughed and walked up a tree while Ghastly just looked shocked.

When she got an armful of apples and berries, they started walking to the cave.

"So how long have you been with the resistance?"

"Since the war started, my parents were part of it as well but they died a while ago"

"Sorry"

"It's okay"

"Do you ever wonder what the world would be like if Mevolent didn't win the war?"

"It would be different than what is now that's for sure. May be the Mortals wouldn't be scared of us"

"Or they wouldn't know we existed, just another face on the street"
