Chapter 26 - edited 01/20/2019
After scanning over the covers of the magazines that are no longer neatly piled in a stack, Lucy glared at Kat who is standing on the other side of the cell.
"I said magazines from the US not here."
"They don't have any."
"Well these aren't going to help me, she's not from here." Frustrated, Lucy took one from the pile.
"I thought you said it's a he." Helene said.
Already hating what she has to do, Lucy didn't feel like answering the ridiculous question and showed her frustration by flipping thru each page like a child who didn't get what she wanted.
"What's her name?" Kat asked.
"If I knew, would I be doing this?"
"…you don't know her name? Then how do you…."
"She gave me a fake name, just like I did." Lucy said in a obvious tone, letting Kat know how silly her question is. There were many opportunities for her to find out, she didn't because there was no need to. All she knows is what she's been told. Whether they're true or not, it didn't matter because they weren't going to see other again…but now…
"Is she famous? If she is, then…"
"Kat! if you talk about this to anyone, I swear I'm going to make your life so miserable, you'll wish…"
"I promise not to tell anyone." Kat quickly responded, raising her hand as a promise after taking a few steps back.
Getting the promise from Kat doesn't make her feel any better. After finished with the magazine, she tossed it on the floor and picked up another from the scattered pile on the table.
"what…does she look like? Maybe I can just search the net."
"Is that your own phone or does it belong to them?" No answer from Kat means it's not hers. After flipping thru the pages, she grabbed another, turning each page so fast, she's done within 2 minutes; the next ones even faster.
"I'm familiar with a few actresses from the states. Do you know which movie she's in?"
Either Kat is running out of patience or she's getting worried because there are only 2 magazines left. It could be both but one thing she's certain of is that Kat still doesn't understand the real reason she went thru them so quickly and why she didn't allow her to search the net.
…Oh God… There's no other way but at the same time, she's hoping that she wouldn't be able to…
"You found her?" Kat said after noticing that she hasn't turned the page.
Denying it crossed her mind. All she has to do is turn the page but that look of distraught in the picture is preventing her from doing so. Quickly turning back to the cover to find the date, she realized what she missed. If there isn't another picture within the magazine, she wouldn't have recognized the face on the cover.
"What does this say?" She expected Kat to be shocked but not for this long. "Kat! Tell me what this says?" It's in French but the picture is enough to let her know that something has happened.
"It says…he's suing her …because she punched him…and she said...he was bothering her...and he tried to...touch her."
"When did this happen?" Helene asked.
That's what Lucy is thinking of. The magazine might be recent but it could be publishing old news. The picture might be old too which means the lawsuit no longer exists but what if it does?
"If she has a lawsuit against her, then she's not qualified…."
If she's not qualified, then so be it. It was a mistake from the beginning to let them know. The only reason she did was because Alyson looks like she's in trouble. With her fame and money, a lawsuit is hardly a problem that she won't be able to resolve herself.
Few days later
"Check mate!" If it weren't for Kat keeping her company for the past few days, she would've start breaking things to get someone's attention but having won the last three games in chess, she is getting bored.
"Again?"
During these past few days, Lucy learned a lot about the short young woman with the medium straight brownish hair. Like her, Kat doesn't have a family, but Kat is more unfortunate.
"So Kat, if you're not doing this, what would you like to do?" Lucy asked as she placed the pawn 2 steps forward on the chessboard.
"mmm…I never thought about it. I mean I've only worked here for a couple of years and I do like this job." Kat said as she made her move.
It's hard to believe how someone without love from parents could grow up to be as normal as her. It could happen but very rarely can an orphan grow up not having some kind of psychological issue. Certainly none that she knew of works as an agent. All the orphans she knew became criminals. "So there's nothing you're interested in, nothing at all…besides this?"
"Not now, maybe…."
"Checkmate!"
"What? Are you kidding me?" This time is even faster than the last game. "I can't believe this. I didn't win one single game."
There's nothing to smile about but she did so because of Kat and because she finally came to a decision last night. It's not midnight yet so she's hoping someone, whether it's Helene or someone else, would come in before that to tell her that they agree to her deal. If not, then she plans on waiting until they do. If they won't, then Scud will eventually figure out that something is wrong. So let's see who has more patience. That's the plan.
"She's here."
"What?" Kat immediately stood up when the steel door opened.
There were no squeaks from the steel door but she heard the sound of a cough outside. She might not know who but she has a feeling that her plan worked because today is the 7th day, the day of the deadline. Change your mind? There's no need to be arrogant, so she remained silent, allowing Helene to take her time to walk closer.
"Here, sign this."
"Is this necessary?" A written agreement only works for those who abide by the rules. Whether it's signed or not, she's not going to …. "What is this?" She thought she made it clear last time that she only asked about the article because she's a fan of the megastar. Pictures of other celebrities were shown to them too. Kat believed her. Only now did she realized Helene didn't.
"She agreed."
"No…" Lucy tossed the documents on the other side of the cell and walked back towards the bed.
"What do you mean no?"
"I mean I don't know who she is. Why would she agree? " It might be too late but she has to try.
"Have you two known each other for a long time?"
"I said I don't know who she is!" As long as she continues to deny it, they will think there is a misunderstanding. As long as she continues to deny it, they will never know the truth.
"I'm surprised, want to know why? She said…you'll deny knowing her."
At this point, it's hard to make Helene believe that she has no connection with the megastar. Even Kat, standing still in silence, looks like she doesn't either.
"She also said…not to give you a choice… Kat, get her dressed and ready to go in half an hour."
"I'm not going! You can't make me go!" As long as I stay here, she won't get involved.
"I most certainly can. Do you want to be carried out or walk by yourself? It's your choice."
Walking rapidly back towards the steel bars, she hit it with her bare hands, knowing that it would do nothing but show her frustration. "Why are you doing this?!"
"…because…you are no good to us being here…you and I know it would be impossible for us to find him whether it's seven days, a month or 6 months…and I believe that you can. So I am willing to take a chance on you." Feeling safe to do so, Helene took two steps closer. "She hasn't signed anything yet. She only agreed to see you, so just go see her. If she changes her mind, then that's fine."
It's too late, too late to take it back. Blaming herself won't do anything at this point. She has no doubt Helene would carry her out. The only thing she can do is prepare for what is about to come.
"Wait…" Knowing that her request would be denied, she didn't ask to see Kristin but instead requested to speak with her.
"I'm afraid I cannot fulfill your request."
"I 'm not going to say anything to her. I just want to know how she's doing…please." Asking nicely worked the last time, so she hoped it will this time.
"It's not me. It's...She…found…out."
…Nnnno…A sharp pain shot thru her heart as if a bullet ran right thru it. She knew this could happen. Like Kat says, denying Kristin access to those files might not prevent her from finding out. No wonder Kat hasn't said anything. She's shocked too. "What did…she say?"
"What you need to do right now is focus on ….."
"What did she say!" There's no need to control her emotions. She can't anyway.
"She said…she doesn't blame you…she said thank you for saving her and giving her…the happiest memories of her life."
"Didn't you tell her it's not like that?"
"Now…before you go accusing me of trying to separate you two, I did no such thing. I told her everything you said the first day you were here, word for word." Helene said as she let out a big sigh. "She said…to tell you…it's over."
It's...over? She knew this day would come but didn't expect it to be like this. No argument, no face to face, no questions. After everything that has happened, she expected Kristin to at least give her a chance to explain. "You should've let her in here! So I can talk to her! She would've listened to me! You should've…"
"Hold on. Wait a minute. DONNN'T." Helene said as she extended hands out, motioning her to stop talking. "I told her to come talk to you but she won't."
"Why?"
For the love of God, I hope my daughter doesn't have these problems. "She said…she's afraid she would change her mind."
"I don't understand." She knew this would happen. She also knew how much it would hurt. "I don't understand." She's hoping Helene would have something more to say. She's hoping Kristin had something more to say other than 'It's over'. She's hoping Kat would explain or say something to make her feel better. But she didn't. She didn't because there is nothing she can do to change Kristin's mind. She didn't because she knew this day would come. They both knew. The only thing they could do is give her some privacy and time alone.
With no one else inside the room, Lucy screamed into the pillow. She's not angry with Kristin. She's more angry with herself. Would it have ended differently if she had told her about Amy? There's no point in thinking about it now. What's done is done. It doesn't matter now. What matters is that Kristin is safe. Everyone is safe. That's all it matters. That's all it matters.
Next day night time
One more day isn't going to make any difference. Besides, Helene has no intention to carry her out because that would attract attention. After a day of rest, she didn't expect to see anything different from what she is seeing now. That's what usually happens after a breakup. Some would need more than a day to get over it and there are some who never could. Some would continue to go on because they have to. If Kristin could see her now, maybe she would change her mind.
"Get dressed..."
No smile is expected but getting no comment surprised her especially the quiet ride to the hotel. No questions were asked which made her wonder if the diamond thief has something planned. Thinking of escape? Does she think she still can?
Like all those times where Scud didn't listen to her, Lucy had thought this time would be the same. But now, being at the top executive level of the hotel, she knows he's not coming. The other reason she came is to make sure Alyson doesn't sign but she now realized how stupid that is. As long as she herself doesn't sign it, there is no agreement. Besides, even if Alyson agrees, she is not going to sign it without seeing her first. "I change my mind."
Helene quickly grabbed hold of her forearm.
"Look…"
"No, you listen…" Helene said as she signaled Kat to step back to give them a moment of privacy. "She's waiting for you. She said…you owe her an explanation."
"She said that?"
"Yes." She didn't think she would back out again but apparently the megastar did. "I know how you feel but you need her and we need you to get that son of a bitch back alive. Then…you can do whatever you want. Okay?"
She's right. I owe her an explanation. But even so, with guilt consuming her body, she can't get herself to walk normally because she needs time to think of what to say to her. "I'm just curious. Was she being sued?"
"not anymore, I took care of it." Helene held onto her forearm more firmly this time, pushing her along.
"oh…"
"You're welcome. Now, can you please go in there so I can go home." Letting out a tired breath, Helene pushed her to stand in front of the door before knocking on it.
There are no other agents except Helene and Kat who seems anxious and excited. Should I make a run for it? There's still time. Maybe I should…ohh shit… Seeing Alyson standing a few feet in front of her, she could now feel her own heartbeat beating even faster than than did she think she could feel this way the next time they meet. That's because she didn't think they would meet again, certainly not like this. After being pushed inside by a pair of hands, the door closed, then locked, she's not sure what to say or what to do. ...Apologize….
"Do you want something to drink?" Alyson called out as she walked towards the living room.
Okay, drink first. "Sure." Stay cool. After letting out a deep breath, she only realized how big the room is after turning around the corner. She's not surprised nor is she surprised that it would have a panoramic view of the Eiffel Towel. "Where's Robert? Did he come with you?" She doesn't really care and only asked just to say something.
"No." Alyson said as she took out a bottle from the refrigerator.
He's not? Shouldn't he be here since he's her bodyguard? "How is he?" Lucy said as she took a seat on the couch.
"…fine..."
If Robert is here, then there is a chance he might find out. She has no doubt he would not have approved of this visit. It's good that he's not here. That's one less person she has to threaten. "Thanks." Lucy took a sip followed by bigger gulp. "…This is a nice room." Big tv, luxurious furniture, ceiling to floor windows, large dining room table, this could be the best room in the hotel. It's not one she hasn't been to before and again only commented just to say something.
"I needed privacy."
Can't blame her. Privacy is as valuable to a celebrity as a secret identity to a wanted criminal. I would be mad as hell for having that taken away. I would need an explanation too. But before that, I need another drink.
"Want another?"
"Yes please…" Even a cold drink with small amount of alcohol can't calm her nervously beating heart. Watching Alyson take her glass, then walking away, she realized why. Maybe not looking at her would work, so she did and stood in front of the panoramic window. Having seen the Eiffel Towel numerous times, the beautiful view with the lighting at night never ceases to amaze her.
"Robert said thank you."
"For what?"
"Your investment tip."
"Ohhh, all I told him was not to be greedy."
"…and he listened… " Alyson said as she handed her another drink. "My father wants to thank you too." Up so close, she could now see that Keira hasn't changed, not that she is expecting any changes since it has only been what about a month since they last saw each other, but finding out the truth of who she is, what happened to her and where she is being kept, she expected her to be…different. She also expects an explanation.
"Do you have today's newspaper?"
That's not what she is expecting but she can wait. "Over there." Alyson pointed to the dining table.
Having been in the cell for so long, Lucy has completely forgot about it. It's because her request was denied every time she asked for a newspaper. After quickly turning to the business page, she realized she predicted correctly. …That bastard…That's why he faked his death. It's happening and will continue to drop, so hopefully Uncle Nick didn't ignore her warning.
Leaning back against the couch, she can't help herself from looking fixedly at Keira, no Lucy, the diamond thief, that's what Helene called her. When Helene was introduced to her, she had thought that Helene was assigned to help her case. Never did she think Helene who later introduced herself as the Head of Division 16 had another reason to meet with her. How? How could that be? Do you have the right person? That was her reaction in her mind at that moment until she was shown proof of who Keira really is. So is it true? Did you really kill someone? Helene didn't say she killed anyone but Keira had once admitted to have killed before and later said she killed a lobster. If it is true, then you must have a good reason. Just like I have a good reason to punch that…
The sound of her phone broke her thoughts.
"Hello…yes…uh huh…Why? How?…ohhhh…okay, thank you." It was quick but not quick enough for her to notice that Keira has been listening and looking before turning her attention back to the newspaper. With a smile in place, she takes a small sip while keeping her eyes at Keira until the sound of two door knocks caught her attention.
Times up? Already? It's been less than fifteen minutes. Lucy expected to get at least an hour so she's not sure why Helene is knocking on the door.
"Have you had dinner yet?" Alyson asked as she walked towards the door.
Dinner? That would be great. Hotel dinner would be better than takeout. Eating here would be better than eating alone in the cell. …Ohh… Dinner for two with candles, roses, and a bottle of wine is what she had requested but not like this, not with her. Not only did she not get her deal, she got her involved. Now isn't the time to explain, there will be time later. After helping put everything on the dining table, Lucy then excused herself to the bathroom. As expected, it's huge and clean and very nice. The Jacuzzi is very tempting. Now is not the time. Now is the time to…ohh… Candles and roses don't mean anything but with lighting dimmed, candles lit, and soft music playing, what else could it mean? Does she know? Did Helene tell her everything because this is not what she's expecting. Damn it! Helene. You didn't tell her everything, did you? Of course you didn't. You knew she wouldn't sign it if she knows the truth. You're so desperate, you're willing to bend the rules. What the hell did you tell her? You cunning b….
"Are you hungry?"
"Yes." She needs a drink as well. After filling Alyson's glass, she did the same with her own. At this moment, she's not thinking about the amount of alcohol in the wine. She's thinking if she should tell Alyson the truth.
"Go ahead, you say it."
"umm...may the future hold your health…may the future hold your happiness…" For a second there, she thought an explanation is expected from her. "What?" What is so funny?
"That's what people say in weddings."
"Oh…really?.." It could be. She's not prepared for that so that's all she could think of. She's not prepared to explain either so let's start off with "How have you've been?"
"Good."
"Good, any…nightmares?" With the dim lighting and candles flickering, she might not be able to see if those white cheeks are turning red but saw those lips lifting into a shy smile, those eyes no longer looking at her. "So that worked? Huh…"
"What?"
She's glad to know that all it takes is 2 seconds view of her naked body to get rid of her nightmares. If she won't admit it, then that's fine. "So what are you doing here in Paris?"
"filming"
"a movie?"
"commercial."
A movie would take a long time. A commercial would take a day or two. So how long is she staying? That's her next question until she was asked the same question. That was her cue to start talking but she doesn't feel like it, not right now, now while eating. "I live here."
That's not the response she's expecting from Keira but that's okay. I can wait. "here…try some of mine." After putting a piece of chicken onto Keira's plate, she expected Keira to do the same but she didn't. Her continuation of questions, none were about the Head of Division 16. shows that she doesn't want to talk about it. Not just her questions, it's the way she talks about the stock market continuously, only stopping to take a bite and drink, as if she's talking to herself, clearly avoiding the reason she's here as long as she can. If Robert is here, he would be interested. She should know that I'm not. "Let's walk it off."
Despite the situation she's in, being reminded of that moment on their last day together brought a smile to her face. Lucy accepted because what else can she do? Say no? That would be rude. Near the panoramic windows with a view of the Eiffel Tower is the perfect spot. Unlike the room in Venice, this one has more space. No chance of bumping against table or anything else for that matter. Moving to the slow soft song, having arms wrapped firmly around her shoulders, their closeness instantly brought her back to that moment. It's time to explain.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for getting you involved." Lucy said as she closed her eyes, hoping Helene keeps her word, hoping her presence, being here, would not affect her in any way.
"Thank you."
Prior to coming here, she expected to be yelled at, she expected her to be upset, definitely did not expect this. "For what?"
"My lawsuit…you did something…didn't you?"
If I could, I would. "She did."
"But she wouldn't have if it wasn't for you." Getting a call from her lawyer half an hour ago surprised her because he has been telling her to settle to avoid negative publicity. There was no way to win, he said. There was no way to prove that it was self-defense, it was her words against pictures and a witness. So why would he suddenly drop the lawsuit? There's only one reason. Holding her closer, she continued to move in the same slow pace, keeping her arms around her shoulders, her face close to hers. "What happened? How did they find out?"
She knows? Of course she knows. But how much does she know? "I had to come back to save my friends."
"Are they safe?"
"Yes."
"What about you?"
Lucy knew she would ask. "Don't worry about me. I'm going to be fine." Feeling arms holding her more firmly, she did the same, regretting the selfish decision she made. There was no other way, so she convinced herself that it would be okay to have Alyson bail her out. Nothing will happen to her because celebrities have bad things written about them all the time. It was wrong to think that nobody would believe a singer would be involved with a criminal. It was wrong to think that she's not as popular as Robert said. It was selfish of her to ignore the fact that some will believe it even if most won't. And now, she can only hope Helene would keep her word; leave her alone and stop trying to get her to sign the agreement. "I'm so sorry. I should have never told them about you. Don't promise her, okay? Don't sign anything. Whatever she says, don't…"
"Didn't she tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
"I already signed it."
"What?" After thinking for 2 seconds, Lucy quickly headed out the door and realized what Helene did when she found no one guarding the door. She expected Kat to be there because Helene told her to stand guard. All this time, she had thought Alyson didn't sign because why would she? She had thought she herself has to sign but now realized why Helene doesn't need it. She knew I would change my mind even before giving me the agreement to sign. How?
"Keira, what's wrong?"
She told her. It has now become didn't hide the fact how she was able to know that I would change my mind. It's because she knew ahead of time, so she planned ahead. She knew there was a chance that I wouldn't come out, so she hid the truth. She lied because I wouldn't come out.
"She said to give this back to you."
Finding her wallet, phone, and watch in the bag, she realized Helene is one step ahead of her again. Quickly putting everything back in, she reached for the doorknob until she heard her name being called. Saying she'll be back of course wouldn't be enough. It's rude to leave without explaining why she has to go. But...
"you'll need this..."
...oh...of course I would need the room key. It's a luxury hotel. An explanation is necessary but not now, so Lucy gave her a promise instead. "I'll be back. I promise."
Now that she's out, she has no intention of going back. The first thing to do is to get a prepaid cell phone and get rid of the one she has. Not knowing if her own phone has been tampered with, it wouldn't be safe to call Anthony with it. As expected, Anthony is impressed and wants to know how she was able to get out so she told him about Plan C which didn't work but he doesn't have to know that.
"Did you find him?"
"yes…but…not exactly…" Anthony said.
"What?" It's a yes or no question so what does 'not exactly' mean? …and why is he hesitating? There may be people here but not close by. This may not be a good place to talk but is there a need to be this secretive? All she wants to know is where he is.
"I'll let you know when to meet."
Looking around, she didn't find anyone suspicious but that doesn't mean Helene didn't send anyone to follow her. Now isn't the time to meet. Besides, there's no reason for them to, not yet.
"oh, one more thing…"
"I know. I know. You told me so." That's what Scud would have said.
"I'm glad you're okay."
Me too. It didn't work the way she planned but she got out. After hanging up, she didn't call Scud because she knew Anthony will let him know and she knew Scud will start yelling the second she picked up.
"Are you done?"
"NO!" Scud continued to yell for not telling him.
If she had to do it again, she would so she didn't apologize and allowed him get his anger out. With the phone a few inches away from her ear, she waited until she could no longer hear Scud's voice which didn't take long. It would've been longer if she responded. After hanging up, even if Scud didn't tell her, she knew she couldn't go back to her own apartment. Since she made a promise, there's only one place she can go.
"Sorry I took so long." Not only her phone, it was necessary to replace everything including the clothing she has on just in case so she bought herself a new backpack with other necessities. An explanation is also necessary since she took about 2 hours but before she could, her lips were captured, her legs instantly moved backwards against the door. It was so sudden, it surprised her, causing her to drop everything she was holding onto. It wasn't just a peck either and it definitely brought back memories of the surprise kiss. What it also did is brought the atmosphere back to where it was before when they were in Venice.
"I thought you're not coming back."
"I just…I have to…get a few things…sorry…"
"Is everything okay?"
"Want some dessert?" Lucy said as she picked up the box, backpack and everything else. Seeing Alyson in her robe, she decided to take a shower first. A quick shower was what she had in mind until she went inside the bathroom.
"Keira…are you okay in there?"
"I'll be out in a minute. I'm just trying out the Jacuzzi." Lucy called out.
One minute went by, then 10, then 20 minutes.
"Keira! you can't stay in the Jacuzzi that long. Your organs are going to get cooked!"
"I'm out." That's the look she's expecting to see prior to coming but not for this reason …that's funny…
"Finally"
"Did you leave me some?" Stretching her arms as she walked towards the dining table, she could feel the difference the hot tub did to her body. Her muscles are more relaxed, her mind too.
"It's in the frig."
It's not opened. Even without opening it, she already knows what it looks like inside. The petite chocolate cake with strawberries no longer has strawberries on top of it, the slice of cheesecake doesn't look as good as it was before, the raspberries, mousse and cream are everywhere. "See what you did."
"Sorry."
No she's not. An apology is immediately followed by a chuckle then a burst of laughter. This isn't how she expected to turn out when she bought the pastries downstairs. The petite chocolate cake caught her eye so she bought it. She's glad she did.
"So…I'm guessing you've been taking some self defense classes." Lucy took a bite of the strawberry.
"mhm….came in really handy…but…" Alyson dug her fork in the chocolate cake and scooped a small bite into her mouth.
"…but what?"
"I wouldn't have been able to handle both of them."
Paparazzis are annoying, most are desperate and some would do anything to get a photo but it's the first time she had a paparazzi, 2 of them, surrounding her like criminals while taking pictures nonstop. The faster she walked, the faster they followed. So she ran. The moment her shoulder was grabbed onto from behind, she felt threatened so she reacted and punched him in the face before kicking him in the groin.
"Were there anyone else around?"
"There were but they didn't see what he did."
"So…you only had one bodyguard with you?" If that's the case, that doesn't make sense.
"I was in disguise. Somehow they found out."
Is that supposed to explain it? That's not a good reason. By the looks of those ocean blue eyes taking glances at her before looking down, looks like she's hiding something.
"So…you went out…in disguise…with only one bodyguard…in Paris…with nobody else except your bodyguard?" It would make sense if she was inside the hotel but according to Kat, it didn't happen inside a hotel. "So where were you going?"
"shopping…"
Shopping makes sense since she has a love for shopping but alone? in a foreign country? with her bodyguard? That's weird. "Were you going back to the hotel when it happened?"
"no."
"so they spotted you after you got of the hotel? Were they ..."
"I was on a stupid date, okay! He's not my bodyguard. He didn't want anyone to know. I don't either. My bodyguards didn't see what happened so I didn't mentioned them. He told me to run so I ran. I shouldn't have. It just happened. Okay! Now can you stop it with the questions? God…."
With the spoon in her hand, Lucy remained still, watching Alyson stomped into the bathroom while mumbling something to herself. "Now that makes sense." Stupid date…well, it certainly was, that stupid date would've cost her 10 million dollars if not for Helene. That may be an amount she can afford but still she shouldn't have to. 10 million dollars?…Just how much did they asked for? She stood up, then walked past the dining room with the intention to ask Alyson but stopped herself short in the living room near the window where the city lights of Paris caught her eye. Where the hell are you? According to Anthony, someone is protecting him. That could only mean one thing. Whoever is protecting him is as powerful as Anthony, probably more since this isn't his territory. What if he can't get him? What if...
"Hey…" Alyson said in a gentle voice as she slipped her arms around Keira's waist from behind. "What are you thinking about?" She's certain Keira isn't thinking about what just happened. That's just one stupid date, one she should have never agreed to.
"You."
"Can I help?"
Lucy turned around, taking Alyson's hands away from her waist. "Are you sure you want to do this? You can still change your mind."
"Keira, if you can risk your life to save your friends, I can too. Besides, they don't want my life, they just want my money."
"How much do they want?" The answer is meaningless. That's why Lucy stopped herself earlier but she's curious.
"100 million dollars" Knowing Keira would want to know, she didn't try to hide it from her.
"What?" That shark. Now it makes perfect sense. No wonder Helene took care of the lawsuit. No wonder she wanted me out.
"Keira, if they asked for more, I would still sign it."
"No…It's not just the money, it's your image, your career, it's…"
"Keira…" Alyson immediately cupped her face to stop her from talking. "It doesn't matter…because you…are worth more than that…you…are…priceless."
This time, being reminded of those exact words she once said to her, didn't make her feel better. "I promise I will come back. I'm not going to let you…."
"NO…What I want…is for you to be safe. Don't think about me. Think about yourself. You do what you need to do. Don't come back if it means that you're not going to be free." Taking one step closer, she wrapped her arms around her shoulder. "…promise me…"
"I can't…"
"You said it yourself. I'm not always going to be popular. Sooner or later, my career will come to an end, so it doesn't matter how it ends…and I…would still have enough money to stay in a room like this. Do you understand?"
She didn't before but now realized how undeniably wrong she was to think that Alyson would never agree without seeing her first. She has no doubt that 'she' would give up her career in return for saving her life. But would she give it up for a criminal? So the question remains. What the heck did Helene tell her? She doesn't think I'm an activist, does she?
"Hey…you have chocolate on your face.…don't move…"
That's odd because she can't feel anything on her…Oh…God. If it's just a kiss on her cheek, her eyes wouldn't have closed, her heartbeat wouldn't have suddenly beat faster. Feeling the tip of her tongue running down her cheek, her mouth spontaneously opened wider to receive what's about to come but it never came.
"Let's go to sleep." Alyson whispered.
Why did she do that? …clearly to play with me, see how I would react…
With the bedroom door opened, it's clear where she is allowed to sleep. The couch is another option but that never crossed her mind because having slept in an uncomfortable mattress for more than 2 weeks, she wants something more comfortable and that right there looks like a very comfortable high-class king size mattress. Bedroom is nice too, with curtains closed more than halfway, the Eiffel Tower could still be seen, city lights brightened the room just enough for her to see that Alyson is lying comfortably on her right side, with her back facing her.
"Keira…"
Can't blame her for not being able to fall asleep. Lawsuit might have been taken care of but now she should have more to think about. "Yes."
"Can you…tell me what they want you to do?"
She has a right to know.
"They want me to catch a criminal for them." That got Alyson to turn to face her. She did wonder why she didn't a moment ago.
"Why? Why you?"
"Because…I told them I know where he is. That's why they let me out."
"Is he dangerous?" Alyson said in a worried tone and shifted her body closer.
"No, he's just an old businessman. He's hiding right now." Giving her details would only get her more worried so she didn't. "Don't worry. I have a lot of friends, they're going to help me…you do know who I am, don't you?" Getting no other response other than a breath of relief could only mean that she knows. Well, of course she knows. A legal agreement would need to be detailed. It's one hundred million dollars. The Head of Division 16 would've made sure there are no loopholes in it and the megastar, that's what Kat calls her, would have made sure she knows what she's signing.
"Keira…are you…leaving tomorrow?"
"…I'm not sure…I'm waiting for my friend to call me." Anthony wouldn't be calling tonight, that she knows for certain but in case he does, let's check the phone. It's on and 90 percent charged. It's also time to sleep. As comfortable as this bed is, it's difficult for her mind to do so but it will, eventually. All it takes is time. Absence of movement would also help. Sounds of rapid breathing aren't helping. Her eyes opened the moment she felt her hand being held onto.
"I'm ready."
"Ready for wh…" …Oh…god… With the body on top, soft kisses on her cheek, jaw and neck, pressure on her sensitive area, it's difficult to control her sexual desire. "What are you doing?" She didn't get a response but she got Alyson to pull back and is now straddling her. Holy Jesus Lord help me. Without lights in the room and only city lights from outside, she may not be able to see clearly but could see that Alyson has just taken her top off. With the half naked body on top of her, it's quite obvious what Alyson wants to do. Before she could say anything, her lips are again captured, her top then lifted up, she could now feel Alyson's upper body rubbing against her own. "...I can't..." Is she ignoring me or did I just say that in my own mind? "You don't want…uhh mmm…." If she could control herself from moaning, she would. Pressure in the center of her core would do that. Okay, she definitely had too much to drink. "I can't." This time, she made sure Alyson heard by gently grabbing her shoulders and pushing her away.
"Why?"
Why? Oh god. I can't think. Look somewhere else. So she sits up to get her eyes focusing on Alyson's face instead of her naked chest. "…because…" Coming up with a reason has always been easy. It's either I don't like you or I have someone else but neither applies in this case. So why can't I? Kristin doesn't want to be with me. So why can't I? "…because…it's that time of the month." That's all she could come up with since she's been rejected before a few times by that same reason. Sounds believable but does she believe it? "Don't take it the wrong way. Believe me, I want to." Getting rejected is embarrassing and hurtful so she wants to make sure Alyson understands that it's not her. It's because…ohh…Godddd…
"…you sure…I can't…change…your mind…"
The hot breath in her ear is enough to cause her whole body to shiver. "mmm" The Jacuzzi was hard to resist. Getting a wet kiss on her face, then another, along with the tip of her tongue sliding down, it's impossible. There's no reason not to accept, no reason to hold to back, no reason not to reciprocate the hot kiss, and no reason not to continue further except for one. "Are you sure?" There is no future for them, their last day together could be tonight so she wants to make sure Alyson wouldn't have any regrets.
"No matter what happens. Now…can you please put your hands up?"
That's definitely not what she's expecting to hear but now she's more certain than before that Alyson knows the truth. With a smile in place, Lucy did as told, allowing her top to be taken off. There's no need to rush. Starting off with one sensual kiss, she placed another, then a trail of kisses along her neck all the while keeping her hands around her bare back. Pulling her body closer made her own heartbeat pound even faster.
"uhh…"
That's the response she's expecting. With each kiss, each touch in the right areas, each time she closed the gap between their warm bodies, she could hear her moans getting louder. Taking it slow is what she has in mind but realized Alyson has reached to that point where she can't. Being pushed down against the sheets is unexpected so is losing control.
"You lied. " Alyson whispered into her ear.
At this moment, with the body on top of her, gliding against her body, the sensation of pleasure is so intense, Lucy isn't sure what she heard.
"It is more fun on the top."
"uhh…mmm…"
Smiling at the reaction she caused, she continued as memories of the first day they met spontaneously flowed into her mind. She didn't think she could feel this way, certainly not for a woman. Having had many boyfriends in the past, she too is surprised with herself. Out of all her past relationships, she never once felt the urge to do it with any one of them. Growing up, she talked about guys with her friends. With her best friends, she talked about what her future wedding would be like, what she would look for in her future husband. There was no doubt in her mind that someday she would get married and that person would be a man. Never did she think that her first time would be with a woman. But 'she' is not just any woman. 'She' would be the only woman she could fall in love with. There would be no others. No regrets. I love you. She slowly leaned down with the intention to say exactly just that before the sound from the phone interrupted.
"I…I have to…get that." It could be urgent. It could be Anthony calling with good news. It could be…
It was sudden, it was quick, it surprised her when her wrist was grabbed onto, The instant Keira rolled on top of her, she realized Keira changed her mind. This moment is familiar, but this time is different. This time, it's not because of the drugs. This time, it's because 'she' wants to.
Whoever's calling can wait. If she picks up the call, there's a chance whoever is calling will know what she's doing, she can't let that happen. Besides, this is a really bad time. Lucy stopped to give the one beneath her a moment to decide if she wants to continue. What they just did, they've done it before. What is going to happen, she is certain Alyson has never experienced before. Placing one gentle kiss on her lips, she placed another on her cheek, then worked her way down in a slow pace until she got to the point where stopping is necessary. Getting no signs to stop, she takes it in. Alyson's moaning amplified in response to the contact is expected so is her chest arching up, her fingers running through 'her' hair, and having 'her' name being called. Heavy breathing, chest heaving, and goose bumps rising can't be controlled. It wouldn't be complete without doing the same to the other.
"nn…nnn..mm…"
That doesn't sound anything like a no so Lucy continued pressing her lips against the smooth soft skin, kissing, licking, nipping further down until she felt pressure on both of her ears. "..oww..."
"oh my God!…"
Okay.. she expected that but not in this surprised tone and not yet. The reason then became obvious after her head was forced into an uncomfortable position. There was no ring but there she heard the sounds of vibration on the table.
"Hi mom. Sorry…I forgot."
Being in this position having her head between the thighs is every man's and lesbian's dream, but at this moment, she found the position she's in to be uncomfortable and a bit painful. "...ow…"
"sssshh…" Alyson whispered.
Okay…but why?...
"…nothing mom...I…was…just doing…some exercising, sit-ups…I was doing sit…" Hearing a chuckle, Alyson immediately placed her hand over Keira's mouth but realized she should've turned the lights on first. That's not her mouth. That' her eye. "Sshhhh"
"Who's that?"
"Just…the tv…mom"
"the tv?"
The tv was never on but the lights came on. The moment that it did, she could see Keira putting her top on, then walking towards the bathroom, one hand over her eye.
"So I just heard. He dropped the lawsuit."
"yes…sorry, I didn't call earlier, I was…busy…everything is fine now, mom so don't worry."
"Did they say why? Why did he…what's that?"
"what's what?"
"Is somebody there with you?"
"No, it's the tv." She heard the flushing sound too but she didn't think her mother could.
"Don't lie to me. Who's there? Don't say it's Paula because I just talked with her. Oh my god…oh my god, honey, are you…ARE YOU DOING WHAT I THINK YOU'RE DOING?!"
"NO!" Seeing Keira walking in, she immediately got off the bed just in case her mother could hear the footsteps.
"oh honey, we've talked about this. You're still too young."
"Mom, I'm an adult...no…I'm not going to get pregnant…I…I just know…..No…mom…that's not how you taught me…what? I don't need to take a cold shower."
There's not much to see but seeing the megastar walking back and forth in her shorts with one hand grabbing onto the pillow to cover her upper naked top and the other hand holding onto the phone, Lucy can't take her eyes away.
"…mom….okay…okay…okay. I promise I'm not going to do it…what!….you want to talk to him?"
…uhh no…I don't want to talk your mother. Lucy waived her hands side by side.
"Mom, I promise I'm not going to do it." It didn't work. It didn't stop her mother from lecturing her. She wanted to say she's well above the age to have sex and is the only one in her group of friends who hasn't done it yet but that not only is not a good argument but probably will get her mother even more upset. "What do you want to ask him?" What does God have anything to do with this? But whatever. "He said yes, mom, he believes in God...what? I can't ask him that." She wants to hang up but knows that if she did, her mother would call Paula to come by and check up on her. There's no way in hell she can let that happen. After mouthing a 'Sorry…I have to' without explaining why, she puts the phone speaker on.
"son…what's your name?"
"Mom!" It's a valid question but she wants her mother to get to the point.
"Do you love her?"
"Yes ma'am." Lucy said in her deepest voice without hesitation and noticed her response elicited a smile from Alyson.
"How old are you?"
"Twenty-seven...ma'am…" Lucy continued to talk to her in a manly voice.
"...you are young too."
Lucy doesn't think so but kept her thoughts to herself while listening to the megastar's mom's lecture about responsibilities, what she believes in, and why she doesn't want her daughter to have sex before marriage.
"Do you understand what I'm saying?"
"Yes, I understand."
"Good. Now should I trust you that you're not going to do anything or should I call Paula to check up on you?"
"Mom!…"
"That's not necessary. Ma'am. I promise."
After her mother is finally satisfied, all she could think of doing is to hide her face under the blanket. It's embarrassing but she didn't expect Keira to still be laughing at her. Somehow, looking at that gorgeous face with those dimples and the new but small scratch under her eye, she too couldn't resist.
"…I really like your mom." She may be overprotective but she has a right to be. "What would your father do?"
"He wouldn't have asked to speak with you and just called Paula to come over."
"I like your father too." Having an over-protective father is always better than having a father who's too busy to be concerned with this type of situation. "Now…where were we?" Hanging one arm over Alyson's covered body, Lucy shifted closer.
"I'm sorry…I can't." It's necessary to apologize for starting this but she thought Keira understood that she can't just ignore her mother's request.
Lucy is a bit disappointed but if she doesn't want to, then that's fine too. Besides, what they just did was very pleasurable even if they weren't fully naked. Besides, it's late, it's time to go to sleep. She's certain she'll be able to do so easily now…but not on the couch. "Can I still sleep here?"
"…mmm...only if you behave…"
…only if I behave?... That's funny. She's the one who started it. She's the one who wants it. So she deserves to be tickled.
"Ahh!...
Getting 'her' to giggle hysterically is her intention. This time, she has the advantage. This time she is able to do so easily because the megastar seems to be more concerned with preventing her upper naked body from being seen now that the lights are on. If not for the loud buzzing noise that suddenly came on, she would have continued a moment longer. "What the heck?"
"...it's a fire alarm…"
"Wait…" Lucy is hoping it's a false alarm because that often happens.
"Keira, I think we should go…before my bodyguards break down the door."
Damn it. Lucy immediately jumped off and got dressed all the while still hoping that it could be a false alarm but that didn't happen. Noises outside could be heard. Then a phone call, not hers but Alyson's followed by the not-so-gentle door knocks a few minutes later.
"Wait. You go first. Pretend you don't know me. Okay?"
"No, let's just go together." Alyson took hold of her hand.
"Listen to me, there could be reporters outside. I'm not free yet. I can't let anyone know about me. Don't worry. I'll be right behind you."
"No. Come with me."
"It's going to be okay." Never has she seen this type of situation in a hotel. Hopefully, it's just a small fire. "When we get back…maybe we can…do it again with lights on."
"Keiraaaa…"
This may not be the right time to joke around but she succeeded to getting her mind to think of something else. "Go." After giving her a kiss, she hid behind the door before opening it. Seconds after the door closed, Lucy looked thru the peephole before stepping out. The hallway is empty except for Alyson and her bodyguards who disappeared from her view after turning around the corner. Being careful not to get too close, she followed, then found a line of guests waiting to get down the staircase as soon as she opened the emergency exit. She's not surprised to find how slow the line is moving nor is she surprised to find people yelling at others on the lower levels to move. Do they know if there is a real fire? Most, like Alyson and her bodyguards, are standing in line, moving when they can, others could be seen on the phone. …shoot…I forgot my phone… She has no plans on calling anyone, certainly not Scud who was the one who called earlier just to let her know when he's coming back to Paris so she's glad she didn't pick up his unimportant call. Not having a phone is just inconvenient so she decided to head back up since the line is moving slowly. After getting back up to the 7th floor, she wasn't expecting to see anyone so seeing two neatly dressed men each with a backpack surprised her. Strange. They could be hotel employees but what seems strange is why are they standing in front of the megastar's room? So she minded her own business and walked rapidly passed them, pretending that she is a hotel guest. As soon as she turned around the corner, she stayed put. Whoever they are, she now knows they don't work here because hotel employees would have stopped her and offered assistance or told her to go down. The fact that they didn't could mean that they're the ones who pulled the fire alarm. What the hell are they doing? There's only one way to find out.
Aaah…just what I need…and for the right moment.
Lucy made sure it works first before heading back. The moment she got in front of the door, she realized she doesn't have the room keycard. It would've been a waste of time coming back up but she's glad her mind wasn't in the right place this time.
Knock. Knock.
Lucy stood casually, waiting for the door to open. As expected, no one came to open it so she knocked again and again to annoy the hell out of them until they did.
"puis-je vous aider?"
She might not know a lot French but she knows what that means. "Ah…yes…I was wondering if you could help me open this." Lucy lifted the fire extinguisher and pressed it, aiming at the man's eyes, then kicked his groin the moment he stepped back. One hit to his head with the fire extinguisher didn't knock him out so she has no choice but to do it again.
"AHH!"
"…hope he's not dead." Killing him isn't her intention but she knew she had to knock him out quickly before the other one comes. And here he is… Lucy sprayed it towards him then threw one powerful front kick to his face. "Hi..ya!" then a roundhouse kick, causing him to fall hard on the floor. "Oh good…he's still conscious." That's why she didn't use the fire extinguisher. Stepping on his back with her left foot, she took his right hand and twisted it behind his back.
"Owww!"
"Tell me why you're in this room or I'll break your arm." Lucy pulled it towards her to let him know she's serious.
"This is our room!"
Oh, thank god. Somehow, she had totally rule out the possibility that these 2 could be Alyson's bodyguards until a moment ago. "Wrong answer." Lucy pulled his hand back more, causing him to scream out in pain. "Now let's try again. Why are you in this room?"
"She hired us to install cameras…that's all, we were just installing cameras, she wants her picture taken, we're photographers, she…AHH!"
"Nice try…now the truth please…" Hearing no response, Lucy twisted his arm tighter and finally got him to confess. Installing cameras to video tape the megastar is obvious even if he didn't confess. As to who hired him and why, he could only describe his appearance. "When did you put them in?" Hopefully they're here to install them not take them out.
"We didn't…we were going to…AH!"
"Do you want your arm! When did you put the cameras in!" Lucy pulled his arm to a painful position.
"We didn't put it in yet! That's what we were trying to do!"
"Thank you for your cooperation. Now go to sleep."
With her fingers, Lucy applied pressure on an area on his neck with the intention of knocking him out without having to exert force, but unfortunately the technique she learned, she has yet to master it. The only way is to throw one hard blow to his neck.
"Damn…what a mess…" Wished she had a taser, that would've been less messy. Since she can't call the police, she has no choice but to call Helene who didn't answer until the sixth ring and wasn't happy to hear from her especially at this time of the night. It's only 10:30PM. "…and one more thing, can you bring me a hidden camera detector please?" Just in case he's lying. Leaving them on the floor is not an option, so she tied them up with tv cables. Next is checking out their bags. Photographers? Really? "…amateurs…" Scud would have agreed. It's nothing she hasn't seen before. After taking a look around the bedroom and bathroom, she is relieved to find that nothing has changed but that doesn't mean they haven't installed them. Where could it be? The ceiling? Smoke detector? Next to the mirrors, doors, picture frames, too many possible places. That's why a detector is needed.
As expected, Helene didn't understand the urgency of the situation so she had to blindfold them and stuff their mouths with a towel and kick them every time they move until Helene gets here which it's more than half an hour later. Shocked? She expected her to be but she wasn't expecting her to bring this many people, Kat, the hotel manager, and three other agents.
"Take them out." Helene ordered.
Out of all of them, only one person seems excited to be here. Kat.
"Where is she?"
"outside…."
"Close the door. Don't let anyone in." Helene immediately ordered.
Too late. Standing at the door is the megastar. Oh great. The whole purpose of not going with her is to prevent herself from being seen with her, especially by her bodyguards. Now being seen by her bodyguards, she can only try to blend in and pretend to be one of Helene's agents. This would be a good time to go into the bedroom to see if the agent found anything. Looks like he hasn't since he's still looking. It's going to take awhile with this big room.
With the hotel manager around, it's not appropriate to tell Helene what she found out so she waited until he's gone but realized she made a mistake of leaving them alone for too long. …oh shit... The manager is gone, Alyson's bodyguards too, but Helene is talking to Alyson. I hope she didn't tell her about the cameras… Seeing Alyson quickly walking towards her with a look of worry, she knew she found out.
"Are you okay?"
With Helene and Kat in the dining area and an agent in the living room, it would be inappropriate to be touching each other. She didn't, Alyson didn't either. It's inappropriate to talk so she shook her head without further explanation and let Helene know what she did wrong.
"Did you really have to tell her everything?"
"Excuse me?"
"Now she's going to be worried about staying in a hotel room."
"I told her for her own safety. There are crazy people out there who are willing to do anything to make a few bucks. With her status, she's a target. Now she can be more cautious."
"Not everyone is like you. Some cannot…" She had more to say if Alyson didn't stop her, pulling her to the far corner.
"I know about these things. I have one of those." Alyson said as she pointed to the device Kat is holding.
"Oh…"
"Are we all set?" Helene said loudly letting her know that she didn't appreciate her tone especially in front of her crew.
Lucy didn't apologize because all of this could have been prevented if she had come sooner. Now that it's safe to do so, she let her know that those guys are the ones who started the fire and they could be sent by the same guy who was suing Alyson. Shocked? Alyson is, Helene looks like she has a headache, Kat is shocked too but by the look on her face, it looks like she's more shocked to see the megastar standing right in front of her.
Waiting for them to finish scanning is necessary just in case they find something. Packing up can be done later. She has nothing else to say to Helene so her plan is to wait but realized Alyson can't wait to get her questions answered.
"You didn't go down?" That would explain why she couldn't see her. There may be a lot of people but she expected her to be near her.
"I forgot my phone." Lucy said with a shrug and a smile, knowing why she would be confused.
"You…don't…have the room key."
"I…forgot."
"Are you feeling okay?"
It's too late to stop her hand from touching her forehead because if she did, it would've caused suspicion. No one is watching except for Kat who has been taking glances at them when she can. It's obvious who Kat is looking at but she didn't expect Kat to still be looking fixedly at Alyson after everyone left. "Kat!" Lucy called out to bring her out of it.
"Hi, I'm Kat. I am a fan of yours." Kat said as she locked her eyes on the blonde and continued to shake her hand. "I really love your music. You're really pretty and…tall." 5 feet 8 inches may not be tall to others but to her being only 5 feet 2, it is.
Really? "Kat, thanks for coming. Good night." Lucy gently pushed her out the door and ignored her request for an autograph. After locking the door, she whispered to Alyson to keep quiet until they get another room because it's very possible that Helene took this opportunity to plant bugs inside the room. She might not have but it's possible.
Packing up didn't take long. She didn't have much to pack but Alyson did. Having the hotel manager escort them to another room is unnecessary but she realized why he did when he continued to apologize and let Alyson know that she won't be charged. Of course, that's not what Alyson wants to hear and the manager knows that. What she wants to know is how the intruders were able to get inside the room, but he doesn't have an answer for that…yet.
The new room, located on the same floor, isn't as big or as fancy which it's fine but Lucy isn't expecting 2 beds, although it does makes sense. Having previously taken a shower, she needs another one. There's no blood, no one died, but she has chemicals from the fire extinguisher on her hands, probably her hair and face too so she let Alyson go first while she scanned the room. After finished with the shower and drying her hair, she realized she took too long. Alyson is already sleeping.
…hmm...
It is late. Sleeping on the same bed is what she had planned on doing but decided not to since she didn't want to disrupt her sleep and there is another empty bed. After slipping into it, she thought she would be able to fall asleep easily because her mind is tired, especially her body after what happened. She might not have been injured in anyway but it's impossible not to think back…to the beginning. What if I didn't get her involved? Would I be able to get out? Scud would think of something. Kristin would still leave me. Alyson would get sued. Those damn intruders would have been able to get in, took videos of her in the bathroom, then upload the videos online, potentially causing the megastar a great deal of problems. But what if Helene didn't take care of the lawsuit, would they still have come? Very, very possible. It's possible they were sent by someone else. Lucy closed her eyes, smiling, now knowing that she had made the right decision.
Next morning
Hearing the sound of the door closing, her eyes fluttered open. After taking a short moment to remember how she got here, she didn't have to look to see if Alyson is still in bed when she heard singing coming from the bathroom. "…what time is it? The bed might be comfortable but not as comfortable as her own. She was able to get sleep but now feels like not enough. What? Why so early? 8AM is too early but apparently not for everyone else including Scud who is calling.
"Yes." Lucy said after clearing her throat.
"Where are you?"
"What?" That's what happens in the morning when she hasn't had a chance to wash her face or brush her teeth.
"Where…are… you?" Scud repeated in a slower pace.
"…I'm at …" Lucy stopped herself when she saw Alyson coming out of the bathroom. There is no reason to let him know so "…why don't you go stay with Anthony?"
"I'm still in Venice. I'm going to take a later flight…why are you ignoring my question?"
"...just go stay with Anthony. Okay?..." If Scud has anything urgent to say, he would've said so already so she hung up without waiting for a response.
"Hey, good morning."
A kiss on the cheek is appreciated. Anything else will have to wait. "Hold that thought." Getting a smile from Alyson, Lucy quickly got off the bed to go to the bathroom, but then realized Alyson didn't hold that thought; she's ready to head out. "Where you going?"
"I…have to go…."
"Oh…I just thought maybe we could go out later." She has no right to ask her to stay.
"So you're not leaving today?"
"I'm…not sure." Her disappointment is instantly visible. Getting a hug feels like this is it. It's time to go their separate ways. One last kiss is what she is expecting but she didn't get one and instead got an apology for last night which isn't necessary, followed by a promise that left her standing speechless and wondering what Alyson meant by:
"I'll make it up to you…tonight."
Holding her rapidly beating heart, Lucy flopped down on the bed. "Now what I am going to do?" There is nothing else she can do except wait for Anthony's call. Wait. There's no need to wait here. As long as she has her phone, she can wait anywhere so she quickly got dressed. With nothing else to do, she might as well follow. Shoot. Hopefully she didn't leave the hotel yet because if she did… there she is… inside the restaurant, having breakfast with a few others. She has no plans in letting her know so she took a seat in the corner of the bar area to eat by herself. Where she is sitting, she can only see the back of Alyson. Strange. If she didn't know those 2 guys are her bodyguards, she would have thought they are her friends. The way they're talking and laughing made it look that way. Shouldn't they be sitting somewhere else? What's also strange is nobody else noticed. …huh...she does look different with a ponytail and glasses.…uh oh…they're done… Following someone requires a disguise but in this case, she doesn't have anything with her except a pair of sunglasses and a different outfit from yesterday so all she can do is try to blend in with the rest of the guests and hope she won't be recognized by keeping herself at a distance. So far so good, following a group is easier than following one person. The time they took to get ready and the time they took to get into the suv, two of them is enough time for her to get a taxi and follow.
Destination is not what she expected to be. What are they doing here? It's not the airport but it's close by where planes can be seen in the background. Commercial? For what? The next location is another place where she hasn't been before but she knows where she is, an area near the Seine near the Pont Alexandre III. With today being a workday, there aren't a lot of people especially in this area so she stood from another area high above looking down at the group.
"wow, this is pretty boring."
Much of the time is taken in setting up the equipment. No wonder she needs to sit. Looking around with sunglasses on, she can now see how quiet this area is. With the bridge and the Seine, it's a good place to sit, relax and enjoy the scenery. "uh oh. Where's she going?" Walking up the stairs is Alyson, a female and one bodyguard. So she immediately walked in the opposite direction, pretending to be a tourist looking around. It's not lunch time yet but it is near that time. Seeing them walking in the other direction, she decides to follow. …hmm…bathroom break…most likely…because she herself needs one too. After a break, she decides to eat lunch first since she is hungry. Besides, by the time she's finished. they could still be setting up the equipment. That's what she thought until she came back.
They've already started filming. Alyson is walking along the walkway next to the Seine. Then a man is walking towards her, then stopped and handed her flowers. After hugging each other, Alyson stepped away and walked back alone without the flowers. "Huh?…weird…" Not only does it make no sense, why here? "boorrrring…." It's the first time she has seen a live video shoot and now realizes how boring it can be. Letting out a yawn, she stretched her arms, then checked her phone to make sure she didn't miss any messages. Nope. No messages. "Should I call Anthony?" Definitely. Even if he isn't ready to meet, there is still a lot to talk about. "What the…hell?"
Distracted by a commotion, Lucy looked down and saw 3 guys, one just knocked Alyson's chair on the ground, another walking towards the director. She may not be able to hear every word but heard enough to know that the director is threatening to call the police. Shit. He has a knife. She didn't think he would use it but he did. The bodyguard might not have a knife but he has the skills to grab hold of his hand. That's it. Now kick him in the stomach. That's exactly what the bodyguard did after successfully twisting his arm, causing him drop the knife.
Run. There is nowhere for Alyson to run except the end of the walkway. c'mon. Use your jacket. That's what she would have used but the second bodyguard who's protecting Alyson did not and unlike the other bodyguard, he was unable to do anything and got kicked in the stomach, causing him fall on his back. Shit. There are a couple of things she can do. Yell to attract their attention or wait to see what happens. She decided to do neither and instead threw one good size rock. "Bullseye" It's not where she was aiming for but hey, it hit him and gave the bodyguard a chance to sweep his legs. "Nice" That's not what she would have done but it worked. Who's next? Two guys are down. The last one is standing in front of a group of five. Is he stupid enough to go against them? Three may be females but two others aren't and they're not empty-handed. Whatever they're holding may be the reason he hasn't done anything yet. That's it. Run. What? don't let them go. Why? She wouldn't have but the bodyguards did, letting both of the troublemakers go for some reason. Hope they don't come back with more. They didn't but the cops did, arriving minutes later. With the cops in sight, there's no need for her to stay so she watched them from the famous bridge instead. With the distance far from the filming area, she may not be able to see clearly, but could still see which one is Alyson, where she is standing and where she is walking to. But what is the commercial about? She still has no clue after they're done. They're done, aren't they? No time for lunch? It seems that way when they didn't make any stops and head straight to a radio station. Is she always this busy? Hope she has time to eat in there. After half an hour wait, seeing her coming out with her two bodyguards and a female companion, she knew she must be tired at this point. Where to now? It's not back to the hotel, she realized after another half hour later. This part of the city isn't familiar. Where they're heading to, she's not sure but she has a feeling she might not be able to go back to the hotel tonight because she just got a message from Anthony. "Sorry" This time is even more painful than the last. …Bye…
After arriving to the destination which took about an hour, she's not surprised to see the familiar faces. But why here? Why a boutique shop? Not only a boutique shop, a salon too afterwards. It's inappropriate to ask in public so she didn't and waited until it's safe to do so.
Anthony is right. She has never heard of Jean Claude Leblanc. Does Scud know? From what she learned, it sounds like this Jean Claude might be as powerful as Anthony because no one dared to offend him in any way. Even those who lost money because of that bastard's Ponzi scheme, they weren't willing to join forces with Anthony to force Jean Claude to give him up.
"Do you think Lionel knew who was protecting him?" Lionel didn't say and only told her that Benjamin Couric is still alive at the warehouse.
"hmm…now that makes sense…he's going to get his money back and he got you to take care of that bastard without getting involved with Jean Claude." It never occurred to him but now realized the mistake of telling Lionel of her hatred towards Benjamin. He did so to give Lionel a reason to believe that she's not a friend of that bastard even though she's a friend of his son Michel. Lionel might not know the real reason but knows that bastard is involved with the death of her love one. Would he still have told her if he didn't know? …probably not…
She has to admit. Lionel is one smart man. She's not upset that he's using her since she wants to kill him herself anyways. But one question remains. Why is Jean Claude protecting him? We'll soon find out.
After stepping out of the luxury black suv, Lucy held onto Anthony's arm and immediately noticed eyes looking in their direction. Why? She's not wearing a dress like the other guests but instead chose to wear an elegant wide legged pants with a shimmering sleeveless top, all in black with a pair of diamond earrings and a necklace with diamonds that aren't big enough to attract attention. Her hairstyle may be different with sides pulled back but it's not set in an unusual way. So what are they looking at?
"They're staring at us." Lucy said as she continued walking, pretending not to notice the stares and whispers around them.
"No, they're staring at you. Do you realize how stunningly gorgeous you look? Not only men, look...they're looking at you…and they're not jealous…looks like they want to jump you."
"Anthony…" She's not even showing that much skin, definitely less than the other guests, so she has no idea why people would be staring at her.
"Have you ever been here before?" Anthony asked.
"Nope." Not this hotel, the function room on the 10th floor is definitely not something she hasn't seen before, although the huge windows did attract her attention. Not just her either, guests could be seen standing in front of them to admire the beautiful view of the city lights under the night sky while others are chatting on the dance floor and some has already started drinking in the bar area. "What kind of party is this?" She previously thought it's a business party but now seeing old and young, round tables with 8 seats and smaller ones with 4, this doesn't look like one.
"He just said it's a private party."
After being seated in a table of 4, she noticed curious eyes from other guests especially the one sitting in front of her, an old man in his 70's or 80's has been staring at her the moment she sat down. If the old woman sitting on her left, most likely his wife, didn't distract him, he would've continued to do so.
"Do you have the time, dear?"
"It's almost 8." Lucy said to the woman.
"Can you tell them to start serving dinner? We're hungry."
"umm…sure.." There's no harm in asking if they could serve dinner to the old couple first. If they can't, then there are always appetizers and dinner rolls. After raising her hand, she noticed how quickly she got the waiter's attention. It's good to know that dinner is about to be served. That means he's here. After thanking the waiter, she's again surprised how fast he came back with 2 baskets of dinner rolls with butter. She doesn't need to ask to know what Anthony is smiling about because her simple movement of raising her hand also caught the attention of others in the nearby tables.
"There he is." Anthony whispered.
A picture of Jean Claude hasn't been shown to her. She thought he would look more like Lionel so she's surprised to see a tall muscular white male with brownish hair, about 50 years old standing near the bar area with a sexy young female holding onto his forearm. Walking casually while taking hold of Anthony's arm, she noticed she again attracted the attention of those she walked past and the one she's here to see and those standing near him as she walked closer. This is a party so there is no need for bodyguards. The man standing next to him doesn't look like one either. If he didn't walk away, she would've ask him too.
"I'm Anthony." Anthony said as he extends his hand out.
"Jean Claude" Jean Claude shook the offered hand.
"and you are?" Anthony politely extended his hand out to the woman standing next to Jean Claude.
"Sylvia."
"Keira." No need for last names. Lucy shook the offered hand from Jean Claude and his date.
"So the reason we're here is because…." Getting the hand signal from Jean Claude, Anthony stopped talking, allowing him a moment to ask his date to leave.
"She's not your girl?" Jean Claude asked.
"She's a friend. She's here for the same reason."
"and what would be that be?"
"We want to know why you're protecting him." Lucy responded in Anthony's place. Is there a need to clarify? She doesn't think so.
"Very simple. He's a smart man."
"Smart? You do realize a lot of people are after him." His response confused her. What confused her even more is his smirk.
"So what can I do...for you…to let him go?"
"…If you can bring back all those he killed, then I'll let him go. " He's not smiling now.
"Jean Claude, this has nothing to do with you, but I will do whatever it takes. The question is...is he worth it?" Even they aren't interrupted by the speaker who announced that dinner is being served, he wasn't expecting to get an answer today.
"nice meeting you both. I'll let you know." Jean Claude left without shaking their hands.
"Don't take too long." Anthony said, allowing Lucy to hold onto his arm as they head back to their seats like the rest of the guests. There's nothing he can do now except wait so he lets Lucy know that's all they can do now and knowing how she feels about being in a formal party, he also lets her know that she can't leave yet because that would be rude, especially when he had not had a chance to meet with the host of tonight's event.
After heading back, Lucy is not surprised to see that the old couple has already started eating, eating like they haven't eaten for days. She can see why after taking a bite of the shrimp. With live music playing on the stage, delicious food, guests focusing onto those who are dancing on the dance floor instead of her, she's feeling more relaxed than before.
"Who's that?" Sitting with Jean Claude is a young man.
"mm...I think… that's his son."
"Geez…his girlfriend looks about the same age as his son."
"Are you surprised?"
"no." What she's surprised by is when the elderly woman starts gagging. "ohh…jesus…" Calling for help never crossed her mind. She quickly wrapped around her waist from behind and pulled, giving one quick upward thrust into the older woman's abdomen.…there you go… Is that a shrimp? Whatever it is, it almost hit Anthony in the face. "Are you okay?" Her hands may be trembling but she seems okay.
"Thank you, dear."
She's glad she can help.
"Are you okay?" She's not asking the elderly woman, she's asking the elderly man who is looking at her in shock. It's only the Heimlick maneuver. Anyone could have done it, anyone including those who are…staring…at her now. Shoot. She had once again attracted attention unintentionally. She's glad they're sitting in the back, there aren't that many who noticed. A few waiters did…and somehow a man from the front who is now walking quickly towards their table did too. His look of worry is plastered all over his face. She realized why after he called the old woman 'mom'. But why aren't they sitting with him?
"…I want to sit here. music is too loud. " The old woman said to her son.
"me too, go back to your seat." The old man spoke with authority.
That made sense. Lucy couldn't help but smile at the elderly couple who made it obvious why they want to stay. More words of gratitude isn't necessary but she appreciated and only came to realize their son is the host of tonight's event after getting an introduction from Anthony who is invited because he had business dealings with him. Not until he left to make an announcement is she aware that this is a party held for his daughter's sixteenth birthday.
"Did you get a gift?"
"I didn't know." Anthony said.
"Don't worry about it. Dear. She has everything she wants. He's spoiling her."
That's funny because that's what some folks said about her when she was younger. Rich spoiled kid.
"I'm going to the ladies room."
"I'll go with you." The old woman didn't ask her to but from what happened earlier, Lucy feels that someone should be keeping a close eye on her. Besides, she has to go herself. There's no way to avoid curious eyes again. Back in the criminal days, she's used to having people stare at her, but they did because they knew who she was. They were afraid of her. Here, people are staring for a different reason.
After they're done, as they're walking back to their seats, she expected the same to happen but found that guests are focusing on the stage not her. Thank goodness. But what's strange is that the once filled seats are now empty, some decided to leave their seats to take a closer look even though the dance floor is already filled. The music isn't familiar, the song isn't either but the voice then became recognizable when the music came to a complete stop. Is that… She stopped before turning her head around. "What is she doing here?"
"My granddaughter is a fan of hers. That's what she wanted for her 16th birthday and that's what she got…he's spoiling her, can he see that?"
But she's a megastar. What is she doing here?
"Are you her fan too?"
"What? No…I don't know who she is. I thought I saw a friend." Lucy continued walking back while still wondering why Alyson would be performing here. This is not something a megastar would do. She does look like she's enjoying it though, showing off her skills with the guitar. Damn she looks cool. On a second thought, it's not a good idea to stay even if the chances of being seen is next to zero. "Can we go?"
"…later..." Anthony responded while keeping his eyes at the front.
"Don't tell me you like that kind of music?" He's not just looking, he's moving to the beat, but she's certain he's interested in the megastar more than her singing.
"It's cool." Anthony leaned in and whispered. "…and she looks ssso hot with the guitar." Seeing her eyes rolling at him confused him. "Don't tell me you don't think she's hot."
Lucy saw no need to respond to that.
"Look at her…look at that….sexy bod…" Realizing the old woman staring, Anthony stopped himself from saying anything inappropriate.
"Do you want to meet her? I can introduce you."
"You know her?" Anthony nodded in excitement.
Oh my god. Does he realize he's acting like a hormonal teenager? If she can think of a good reason, she would say something to stop him but she can't. All she can do is wait and see what happens and if needed, she plans on hiding in the bathroom. Sounds like a plan…until a few minutes after the performance ended.
"Do you want to meet her now?" The old woman asked.
"Wait." Lucy has no plans in stopping Anthony from going up in the front to meet with Alyson who was sitting in the same table as the host but now is walking towards the dance floor. That previous plan she had of hiding herself from Alyson is no longer in her mind. In fact, she feels the need to show herself because she can't control herself from doing nothing when that pervertic looking son of Jean Claude's is dancing closely with Alyson.
"We forgot to give Jean Claude our number. Let's dance." Without waiting for Anthony's response, she held his forearm and led him towards the dance floor. She couldn't see clearly where she was before but can now see that she's right. Jean Claude's son does not look like a gentleman. Get your damn hands off her. But first, "Jean Claude, do you have our number?" She doesn't have a business card, but Anthony does.
"No. You'll know when I want to talk to you." Unhappy with the interruption, Jean Claude continued dancing with his date.
"Here. This will save you some time." Anthony pulled out a business card from his chest pocket and extended his hand out towards Jean Claude who reluctantly took it to get them to leave him alone.
Now, let's move. "Be nice." Lucy said to Anthony as they moved to the other end of the dance floor.
"What makes you think she'll dance with me?"
"She will." Lucy said with confidence.
Here goes. Let's hope she won't call my name.
Rejecting his request for a dance would be rude, so Alyson didn't and now regretted doing so. Yawning is rude especially during a conversation but she can't help it since she has been working since this morning so she apologized by letting the one she's dancing with know why so he doesn't take it the wrong way. He didn't but she was hoping he get the hint and be a gentleman and escort her back to her seat so that no one thinks he was being rejected. Not only did he not get the hint, he continued asking questions, questions that she doesn't want to answer because she's tired. So she has no choice but to …
"May I cut in?" Anthony asked politely.
Yup…she's shocked. As expected, Jean Claude's son doesn't mind switching partners.
"I'm Anthony." Anthony isn't expecting the megastar to introduce herself but found it strange that she's not even looking at him until he followed her line of sight. "In case you're wondering, she's not my girlfriend, she's just a friend. May I?"
"she...looks absolutely stunning." Alyson said as she held onto his hand.
"She's not the only one. I'll tell her you said that."
Meanwhile, Lucy played along, asking and answering questions from Jean Claude's son. Getting compliments on her physical appearance is expected, so is being asked what she does for a living. Are you an actress? A model? Then finally she couldn't stand it anymore and excused herself without any explanation provided. If he is offended, then so be it. After Anthony came back, she could see the big smile on his face.
"she's too young for you." Sorry… She feels the need to tell him in case he decides to pursue her.
"I'm not that old."
"She doesn't have a boyfriend."
Lucy is surprised that the elderly woman has been listening.
"Oh really…Did she say she's interested in older guys?"
Hopefully, he's just kidding. If he's serious, then he would be just waiting his time. After the birthday girl blew out the candles, cake has been served and eaten, guests are standing up to leave, it's time to …What is she doing? no, don't…go back... Shaking her head slightly, she hoped to give Alyson the signal to stop coming any closer. She expected her to know why she pretended not to know her earlier. She expected her to keep her distance especially now in the situation she's in. She…ohh… Alyson didn't come for her, she came to give the elderly woman a hug. Whatever their relationship is, their closeness explains why she's here.
"I was just going to look for you. This gentleman here says…"
"We've met…" Anthony said, interrupting the elderly woman.
Oh my god. Clearly Anthony didn't get enough. Is there really a need to shake her hand again?
"He thinks you're hot and sexy. He couldn't stop talking about you."
Oh...my...god. She would be laughing so hard if they're alone but right now, all she could feel is embarrassment for him so she quickly introduced herself and realized her acting isn't as good as the megastar who shook her hand and complimented on her outfit as if it's the first time they've met. Their conversation is short and casual which nobody would find anything wrong with until she was asked to wait the moment Anthony agreed that it's time to leave.
"You…have something on your face." Alyson had thought about staying put in her own seat and let the day go by without meeting her but she just couldn't control herself especially after learning what Keira did.
The comment brought back memories of last night which made Lucy wonder if she does have something on her face or is she just...Don't do that. Would anyone find it strange if I allowed her to do so? Would it be strange if I didn't let her? What would Anthony do? It's obvious what he would've done. He would've let her. So she did, standing still, allowing Alyson to wipe whatever it is on her face with a napkin while looking at Anthony to see his reaction, but found that he isn't looking at them. Maybe he's trying to avoid further embarrassment otherwise why would he miss this opportunity to chat with the megastar and left to see a friend. Whatever his reason is, she's feeling a bit more relaxed but still there's no reason for her to be here.
"I'll be leaving now." Lucy has no intention of hugging them but realized the elderly woman is expecting one. For her husband, she gave him a handshake. If Anthony is still here, she wouldn't have given Alyson a hug because it just doesn't make sense.
"You look absolutely stunning. See you later." Alyson whispered, then pulled back with a smile.
Her comment is enough to give her a heartache. Thanks for this opportunity because leaving without saying anything just wouldn't be right. Everyone near them have left their tables. Staffs are busily cleaning up. Lucy is aware there are still eyes looking at them so there's not much she can say other than "Take care." She said softly without smiling, taking one step back before turning around but didn't expect Alyson to take hold of her forearm.
"Take…care?"
That smile is gone. That look of anticipation is gone. "I have to go." Saying anything else would've been inappropriate so she didn't and walked away, giving others the idea that they're nothing more than just an acquaintance.
That moment was painful. It hurts more than the last time. It bothered her so much, she had totally forgotten that Scud will be at the apartment. There he is, running towards her in excitement, hugging her the moment she walked in.
"Wow, you look stunning!"
"yea…yea…I know." Lucy said in a dull tone and went into the bedroom to change into her casual clothes.
"What happened?"
Shrugging in response, Anthony too feels there is something wrong since she has been very quiet during the ride back. Not knowing what Jean Claude would do may be the reason. With Scud here, let's see what he can come up with.
"Would he just give him up so easily?" Scud heard enough to know that he might not. But why would he take the risk of jeopardizing his own businesses and wealth?
"He must be hiding something from him." Lucy said.
"They could be good friends." Scud said.
"…and Jean Claude cannot let anyone know about this…" Anthony added.
"…or they could be just good friends…" Scud repeated and realized no one thinks that but him. "okay, if he does have something Jean Claude wants, then why doesn't he just kill him?"
"maybe this information is very valuable to him and he knows he can't threaten him with anything...because he knows he won't give it up no matter what." Anthony believes that it's possible because it happened to him once before when one of his followers stole confidential information from him and threatened him for money. He, however, didn't give in and had him killed because he needed his guys to know the consequences if anyone tries to threaten him. That happened years ago. He never did find the information that guy claimed to have hidden.
"then it has to be some kind of incriminating evidence." Lucy said.
"bingo!" Scud called out.
"then who has this evidence?"
Anthony might not have any idea but they do. "Jehan." Scud and Lucy said in unison.
"Okay, so why doesn't Jean Claude go after him? All he has to do is threaten him, destroy the evidence and kill them both." That's what he would've done, depending on how valuable the information is.
"What would you do if you know you're going to die after giving it to him?" Lucy said.
"So you're saying Jean Claude would rather do nothing, let them live and play along…and risk the chance of the evidence getting leaked out? This doesn't make sense, guys. I know I wouldn't risk it."
"Maybe he just found out and he's doing something right now…" It could be so she's not sure why Anthony is looking at her as if to say it's impossible. Scud too. Yawning loudly, she let them both know that her mind is too tired to think which it's the truth. After Anthony left, leaving 2 of his followers behind, she still can't sleep after lying in bed for an hour. It's not the bed. It's her mind thinking of Jean Claude in one moment, the megastar the next. Each time she felt she didn't make the right decision, her mind, on its own, would keep thinking about what she could've done instead. I shouldn't have got her involved. I shouldn't have. But if I didn't, she would've been in trouble. "Stop it. Stop it." Covering her head with a pillow couldn't stop her active mind, so she went to the kitchen to get herself a drink. What she needs now is something to put her to sleep, something to knock her out, something in the frig maybe…
"Hey."
"Hey." Looks like she's not the only one who can't sleep.
"Can't sleep?"
"Do we have any cold medicine here?" Anything with alcohol would work. Hearing a small laugh, she realized her question is taken as a joke. "I'm serious. Do we?"
"Are you feeling all right?"
A wine cooler will have to do so she took one and relaxed on the couch. Watching tv will turn her mind off from everything else, she hope.
"Those won't put you to sleep." It doesn't take a genius to see that something is wrong. Now that all her friends have been saved, what could be wrong? "Do you want to talk about it?"
"No." Lucy said while flipping the channels. She doesn't feel like talking about her problems to anyone right now, especially to someone whom she doesn't know that well.
"Then…can I talk to you about my problems?"
That's unexpected. Lucy turned to look at the woman with the short dark hair, dressed in a dark blue top, with curves and muscles in her upper arms.
"I don't want to do this anymore."
"Why?" Lucy showed no emotion as she took another gulp of the drink. Having been the leader for years, she knew all the reasons. Some of her followers quit because they wanted to start their own family. Some grew up and realized that they didn't want this kind of life anymore. Some fell in love and their other half wanted them to quit, kind of like her. There were a lot of reasons.
"I'm sick of it. I mean, sometimes I like it….you know…like the time I rescued your girl. I felt so good about that. When you beat the shit out of that guy in the warehouse, I was right there with you…bam!" She threw a few punches in the air which elicited a smile from her listener. "But…what if he's on my team, I can't just stand there and do nothing."
"Those are the rules." Lucy said.
"I know…but I can't…" Slumping back against the armchair, she is expecting her boss's friend to have something to say. Since she didn't… "Tell me the truth. Did you ever regret leaving?" It's something she has been very curious about since that day at the warehouse so she asked Anthony who might not have given her all the details but she learned enough to know who she was before she became Keira.
"What did I say at the warehouse?"
"You said you'd do it again."
"…and I would…for her." Lucy said without a doubt.
"…but you lost everything…." She doesn't know what happened to her lover but knows that she passed away.
"If she didn't come with me, maybe she would still be here." Lucy took another big gulp. "But…if I have another chance to do it all over, I…don't think I would be able to let her go…." Lucy said to herself as if there's nobody around.
"No regrets?" The former leader might not have responded but the answer is obvious. "So if you have no regrets, then why can't you sleep? "
Lucy slowly turned her head towards Anthony's follower. "What?"
"You heard me." She has no idea what the former leader is thinking but when that look of confusion suddenly turned into a look of anger, that body suddenly towering over her a moment before leaving, she realized the mistake she made. "Shoot…now I got nobody to talk to…." She didn't mean to pry but her story fascinated her. Offending her wasn't her intention but she came to realize that all leaders have a strange personality, whether it's a woman or a man, whether it's former or current. "I really should mind my own business." Letting out a sigh, she took the tv remote from the couch and flipped thru the channels to see if there is anything that could cheer herself up. …French, French, boring, boring, mmm…eww…oh mannn… nothing good is on but she settled on a channel long enough to make her mind want to go to sleep until noises caught her attention."Where you going?" It's her job to know so she didn't think she's out of line. She didn't think the former leader is that type of person, looking down at others who's not in the same status. During those days she dealt with her, her orders didn't sound like orders. They sounded more like requests. She had thought she is someone whom she can confide in and talk casually with…but now. "Hey, I didn't mean to upset you…."
"You didn't. Can you tell Scud not to call me?"
Just like now, her request doesn't sound like a command, it sounded like a request from a friend to a friend. "Sure."
"Thanks." Lucy showed her appreciation with a smile before closing the door. There's no need to tell anyone. In fact, there is a need to make sure no one is following her, especially Anthony's loyal follower who has decided to quit. The taxi ride didn't take long. 1...2...3…4…5…6…7… At this time of the night, almost everyone is asleep. After taking a deep breath, she exhaled loudly before inserting the hotel keycard. "Should I call her first?" After turning the knob, she's surprised she could open the door. It didn't have the security guard latch on. Oh my God. That's a no no especially after what happened. The lights are off but she could still see from the city lights shining through the window. Turning the lights on is what she has planned on doing until she noticed the light on the slit of the bedroom door. She's still awake? It's past 12AM. She raised her hand with the intention of knocking on the door until she heard:
"Nothing's wrong…mom…I just couldn't sleep."
Is she sick? Blowing her nose and sniffing in could also mean…
"…no…I'm not crying…no…he's not here….mom…..he left….he's not coming back…no…we didn't break up…well…we did but it's not like that….he just had to leave…"
Lucy placed her ears closer against the door.
"What!….NO!…Mom!…he didn't leave because I won't let him…he's not like that…he just had some important things to do. I'm okay…I just missed him…that's all…"
It's wrong to eavesdrop but Lucy also can't help herself.
"yes…mhm….What's he like?..mmm…He's gorgeous…yes…gorgeous….you should've seen him today…oh my god…he looked absolutely stunning…"
Anthony thought so, Scud, and everybody else. Should've seen me when I was younger.
"…everyone was looking at him and not me…I know…mom…I'm just saying that's how good he looked….yes….and he's charming….funny…smart…sexy…yes…sexy…mom…he's kind and caring… ….what?…no, he doesn't like me for my money, he has a lot of money, he might even be wealthier than me!….what does he do?…umm….he…no….I know what he does. I just… can't tell you. He made me promise not to tell anyone. Not even you. Mom."
Lucy understands why her mother would be concerned, the disadvantage of being famous and wealthy.
"I know he has money….because he donated half a million dollars to charity…I'm not lying. What? What's wrong with him? What do you mean? There's nothing wrong with him….I didn't say he's perfect…no….he doesn't have a girlfriend…he had a girlfriend but they broke up the same time I broke up with that jackass…sorry…mom…no…mom…he didn't go back to his ex….Yes…I'm positive he didn't.
Hearing nothing for a moment, Lucy leaned in closer against the door.
"We met on the plane…a guy was bothering me and he came to my rescue…he had no idea who I was…yes…he knows now…and then he saved me again…several times….yes….mhm…"
Lucy heard a squeak, is not sure but guessed it could be from the bed.
"He didn't promise me anything. We know we can't be together. No…we didn't talk about that….we just know. How?…because we have different lives…." Alyson let out a long sigh. "Is it because I'm famous?… mmm…yes and no…. she's famous too just not in a good way…I don't know…mom…I don't know what I'm saying either…"
Lucy pulled back, looking at the door, wondering if she should interrupt at this moment or wait.
"I love him…and he said he loves me…but we can't be together…mom…it's…complicated…I just miss him….that's all…"
Lucy could feel her heart aching at this moment.
"….his name? oh…it'sss….Luu….yes…Luke…like the skywalker…mhm…you want to see what he looks like?….I…don't have a picture of him….I don't know…I just never thought of it…..Mom… I'm fine ….I just wish we could spend more time together…that's all…..I just wish...aaahh…ahhh….AHH!"
What the hell? Lucy immediately opened the door and is again surprised that it wasn't locked. There is nobody inside except her. It wasn't a scream in pain. That she knows for sure because Alyson is looking at her in shock for a moment before hanging up the phone call. If she didn't explain to her mother why she was screaming, Lucy wouldn't have known why. "Ohh…." She should've known but couldn't see where it is until now so she wrapped the spider with a tissue and flush it down the toilet.
"What are you doing here?"
"I heard you screaming. So I want to make sure you're okay." Lucy said, taking steps closer, wrapping her arms around the tall blonde. "I…couldn't sleep and I want to see you."
When the door suddenly opened, it was like someone up above was listening to her. Her last thought before she screamed out loud was wishing 'her' to be here and there she was…appearing right in front of her. ...Wait..."How long have you been here?"
"...not long...Next time, remember to lock the door."
Not long meaning how long? "You heard…everything?"
No need to embarrass her so Lucy let her know she only heard the part about her name. There will be time to talk. Right now isn't the time since she herself is tired. After taking a quick shower and changing into her pajamas top and shorts, she didn't have to think of which bed to sleep on because the empty one is occupied by a suit case and clothing. This time, it didn't take long for her to fall asleep but something is preventing her from reaching that state of deep unconsciousness. "Wha..zz that…?" She's not expecting a response because she had thought Alyson was already asleep. "whaaat?" After blinking a few times to get adjusted to the light that Alyson just turned on, she came to realize what that sound is. "Are they?"
"They've been doing that since I came back. That's why I couldn't sleep." Alyson said in a tired voice.
"What kind of shitty hotel is this? How could the walls be so thin?" That's the sound of a couple having sex in the next room.
A gasp came out as a realization hit her. "you don't think they heard us, do you?"
Lucy had never thought about that. But whether anyone heard them or not, does it matter at this point? "…that's an executive suite, there are no rooms next to the bedroom." And we were nowhere as loud as like they are…
Feeling better that nobody heard, Alyson couldn't resist smiling at the brunette's behavior. Did she think punching the wall will make them stop? "What are you doing?"
"If I can't get any, then they can't either."
"Keiraaaa…"
It took Lucy a few seconds to realize what elicited that kind of reaction. "…no…I mean…sleep, if I can't get any sleep…." I didn't come back for sex. Goddd. Clearly, that's what Alyson was thinking. The change of color on her cheeks shows. The way she slid back down, hugging the pillow to hide her entire face shows. No need to embarrass her any further so Lucy continued banging the wall which didn't work so she lay back down. "We should get another room tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" Alyson isn't expecting her to stay for another night.
"I…don't know how long I can stay. I want to…spend more time with you too." Thinking about what they did last night made her feel like an ass. Sex one night, then leaving her with two words made her feel like one of those people who only wants sex. It wasn't sex but it was close to it. That's what was bothering her and that's not who she is.
"I'm…leaving…this Friday."
That's unexpected. With the way things are with Jean Claude, she has a feeling they aren't going to get a response from him for at least a week. There are things that she need to do with Scud and Anthony, but she felt that she would be able to spend more time with her. But now…
Feeling that her eyes are starting to drown with tears, Alyson turned the lamp off before shifting closer. Getting a promise to stay until Friday is what she had wanted and now… A drop of tear uncontrollably escaped followed by another, she brushed them away and only came to realize how quiet it is when she heard the pounding of her own heartbeat. "Did you hear that?"
"Thank God." They stopped. Now that she knows that they won't have much time together, Lucy wants to spend as much time with her as she can. "Do you have to work tomorrow?"
"Are you going to follow me again?"
"You saw me?" Without a disguise, it's possible but she didn't think Alyson noticed but then again it's hard not to notice a woman sitting alone in the corner of the bar area to eat breakfast. It's also difficult to hide in an open area near the seine where there weren't that many people around. "I would've done something else if I missed. But I didn't and your bodyguard took care of it so..." Words of gratitude isn't necessary. She didn't get one but got a long kiss on her cheek which is even better.
