26. A Love Like War ~ Part 2
They waited until midnight before they went to the border. There were two wolves waiting, as if they'd been expecting them. Alice asked them to fetch Sam, and soon Sam appeared in human form. He looked wary, "What can I do for you?"
"We'd like to ask permission to cross your land to the ocean." Jasper said.
"We have to go on a very important journey." Alice said, "Going through your land is the quickest way of getting there."
Sam seemed to consider for a moment, before agreeing, "I will escort you there myself. No one will get in your way if I'm with you."
He led them across the border and they made their way towards the ocean at a human pace. As they got further away from the Cullen house, Alice's nervousness grew and she began to chatter mindlessly, "The forest is going to look so pretty when it snows. It'll be cold of course - I mean, snow is cold - but that shouldn't be a problem. You guys are always hot, and we're already cold! Nessie will have to wrap up warm though, I suppose, being half human and all. Or maybe she doesn't feel the cold! This is her first winter after all...maybe-"
Alice stopped as Jasper squeezed her hand and sent a wave of calm over her. "Sorry! I'm babbling!"
No one else spoke until they reached the coast. Sam stopped, "I wish you a safe journey...wherever you're going."
"Sam, we need to ask you a huge favour...another one." Alice said. Sam raised an eyebrow, "Please, wait in the clearing where you found us. Wait until the Cullens come looking for us, then give them..." Alice pulled the note from her pocket and held it out to Sam, "...this."
"What-" Sam began to open it.
"Please don't!" Alice said quickly, "They should be the ones to read it. Please promise you'll see that they get it!"
Sam nodded, sensing the importance in Alice's tone, "I will."
"It's of the utmost importance that no one knows about this until the Cullens get this note." Alice said, "You can't let Jacob know you've seen us. Can you do that, Sam?"
Sam looked doubtful, but he nodded. It wasn't often the Cullens asked for the help of the wolves, and when it was - it was important. Alice smiled gratefully at him and she and Jasper made their way towards the water. Before they left, she turned back, "Be sure that you follow my instructions exactly. Do it as if all our lives depended on it."
Sam narrowed his eyes, suspicious now, "Do all our lives depend on it?"
Alice glanced at Jasper, and they disappeared into the water without answering Sam's question.

Alice's fingers twitched as her phone rang. It was Bella, and she so desperately wanted to answer it. Jasper touched her hand gently from across the car's console, "No, Alice. Edward can read thoughts over the phone, remember."
Alice sighed and turned to look out the window at the scenery whizzing past. Not long had passed since they'd left the Cullens, but she missed them already. Jasper was right, though, so she let the phone ring. When it stopped, the silence that filled the car seemed too much.
Jasper flicked on the radio, turning to a channel reading the weather. It usually cheered Alice up to laugh at how wrong the humans got their weather predictions. Today she didn't even notice the high-pitched tone of the weather girl. "We'll be back with them soon, Darlin'."
"A month." Alice said flatly, not taking her eyes from the window, "They're going to hate us for leaving them."
"No they won't." Jasper said, taking his eyes from the road to look at his wife, "We're helping them."
"They don't know that." Alice said, "They think we've abandoned them when they need us."
"They'll understand." Jasper said, taking Alice's hand, "They're family."
Alice looked over at him, "They'll always be our family, won't they, Jazz?"
"Forever." Jasper confirmed.
Alice tried a smile, "We're going to save them."
Jasper smiled back. When he and Alice had first joined the Cullens, he'd been wary. In his vampire upbringing, he had not had any kind of family experience. He'd been part of a coven, yes, with Maria and Lucy and Nettie, along with countless newborns, but they weren't like a family. They stayed together because they had to, because they needed each other for their own gain. Maria needed her army for power and land; she needed Jasper to achieve her goal. It wasn't until Peter and Charlotte came along that Jasper had discovered vampires could still have real emotional ties. They'd shown him that they could still live in peace together, as a family. Peter had become his brother, and then Charlotte his sister. Still, when Jasper had joined the Cullens he hadn't known what to make of them. They were a real family, living together not only out of choice, but out of love. He found that they did need each other...but not for personal gain. They needed each other for a different reason entirely.
In time - somehow, without him realising - Jasper had become a part of the family. He loved each and every one of his siblings, and his new adoptive parents, almost as much as he loved Alice. Almost.
They pulled up outside a hotel and got out of the car. It would only take them five minutes to run to the jungle from here, and the hotel would act as a base. Jasper flashed fake IDs at the hotel receptionist and she gave them two shiny keys. As they made their way up to the hotel room, Alice started thinking about J Jenks again. Would Bella have found her note by now? Would she know what to do when she found J Jenks? With Nessie permanently glued to Bella's side, Alice was having trouble seeing the Cullens future. It worried her like crazy. She was just going to have to wait like a normal person. Wait...and hope.
~o.O.o~
Alice came through the front door, kicking off her shoes and throwing them at the wall of the hotel room. Jasper appeared from the second room, a frown on his face, "Nothing?"
"Nothing." Alice confirmed. They'd been searching for weeks now, and they'd still gotten nowhere in their search for the hybrids. Alice was literally searching for her blind spot.
"I'll get the map." Jasper said, disappearing into the bedroom to get the map that they'd been using to mark off locations for the last three weeks. Alice sat down on the sofa and stared at the wall, trying to see any part of the future.
Suddenly, a vision crashed into her - more overwhelming than anything she'd felt before. It slammed straight into her and she felt like she would have fallen over if she hadn't been sat down. The picture formed in front of her; a clearing, the ground and the trees covered in snow. On one side were her family, the ones she loved most. They were surrounded by all of their friends; Kate, Tanya, Eleazar, Garrett, Tia, Mary...every Ally the Cullens had was there. On the other side of the clearing stood a crowd of black; the Volturi.
Then she saw herself, standing directly in front of Aro. Watching, she waited for her vision self to bring out the hybrids; to show Aro proof that Renesmee was harmless; to stop the battle before it begun. But that's not what happened. Instead, Alice swiftly kicked Aro to the head, sending him flying backwards towards the crowd of Volturi behind him. Alice was immediately seized by two guards; she struggled, but could not break their iron grip. Jasper was also being restrained, and Alice could feel the need from him; desperate to help her.
There was a cry from the opposite side of the field, "Let her go!"
Then Carlisle was running towards them, knocking down any Volturi guards who tried to stop him. He was so close, jumping high in the air to close the last bit of space between him and Alice.
Aro met him mid jump, they collided and both vampires fell to the ground. Carlisle didn't move, but Aro slowly rose to his feet. In his hand...was Carlisle's head.
No one moved for a moment, and then everything began happening in a blur. The Cullens and their allies raced forward towards the Volturi, and the Volturi soon retaliated and ran towards the Cullens. It didn't take long for the wolves to join in. The war had begun.
The guards held Alice strongly as she tried to join in the battle, and all she could do was watch as people from both sides were taken out. She trained her eyes on Jasper, following him as he pinned Demetri to the ground. She began to panic as she saw Jane narrow her eyes at Jasper, but relaxed when she realized that Bella was protecting Jasper with her shield.
Her relief was short lived, as Alec tackled Bella to the ground and broke the shield. Jasper doubled over in pain, and Demetri took the opportunity to overpower him. Alice felt as if her heart had been ripped out as Felix and Demetri beheaded Jasper. She screamed and, sudden rage and power flowing through her, broke free of the guards. Emmett beheaded Alec before Alice had the chance to.
To her left, Jane and Felix took out Seth. To her right, a Volturi guard took out another wolf. Her eyes met Benjamin's just before he smashed the ground with his fist, opening up a large sink hole in the centre of the field, lava bubbling at the bottom of the long drop. Everywhere she looked, there was destruction, death, pain.
She stopped breathing as Esme was dragged into the crater by a Volturi guard, but sighed in relief when Leah pulled the guard away and fell instead of Esme. Relief. She should not feel relief that Leah died, but as Esme climbed out of the hole alive; she did. Edward also fell into the crater, but soon jumped back out and killed Demetri. Alice realized that she needed to stop watching and start acting.
Her eyes narrowed in on Jane. If it wasn't for Jane, Jasper might still be alive.
Alice charged towards Jane, dodging and knocking down anyone who got in her way. Bella was shielding her, and Jane soon realized that her gift was useless and so she began to run. Alice wasn't letting go that easily. Landing in front of her, Alice looked at Jane's terrified face. Good; she should be scared. Alice threw Jane to a waiting Sam, who bit her head off with no remorse.
Caius joined the fight then, but was quickly killed by Garret, Tanya, and Kate. It didn't take long for Stefan and Vladimir to take out Marcus, leaving only one Volturi leader remaining. Aro.
Aro finally joined the fight, and was met with both Edward and Bella. Aro came close to killing Edward, but together, Bella and Edward managed to behead Aro. Bella set his head alight as a swarm of Volturi guard closed in around them.
Alice tried to block it out. Edward and Bella were going to die. They were all going to die. Jasper was going to die.
"Alice! Alice, snap out of it! What's wrong? Alice!"
Jasper was shaking her violently, and Alice realized she was screaming. She closed her eyes and collapsed into Jasper's chest, sobbing and choking even though no tears would come.
"Shh, Darlin', it's okay. Shhh." Jasper said, stroking her hair soothingly and trying to send waves of calm emotion towards her. He didn't know what she'd seen, but she was terrified.
"It's not okay." Alice choked, "It's not going to be okay."
"I'm not going to let anything happen to you." Jasper said gently.
"You died Jasper. You died." Alice sobbed, "I can't let that happen, I can't!"
Jasper stayed silent for a moment, and then spoke again, "We can change it. Your visions aren't definite."
"Everyone died, Jazz." Alice said, "Carlisle, Edward, Bella. The Volturi killed everyone."
"We can go back." Jasper suggested, "We can help them prepare for the fight. They'd stand a better chance-"
"No." Alice interrupted, "We have to find the hybrid. It's the only way to convince Aro...it's the only way to stop this. We have to find them Jasper, we have to."
"We will." Jasper promised, but there was doubt in his voice. They'd already been searching for weeks with no results. What if they couldn't find the hybrid? What if...no. Jasper refused to think about he and Alice being separated. He wouldn't let anything happen to either of them.
"How do you know we will?" Alice asked.
"Because I know we're going to be alright." Jasper told her, "Nothing could ever break us apart. We'll find the hybrid and we'll stop the war."
He held Alice tightly and tried to make her trust his words. It was his one job to keep her safe, but she didn't feel safe. She felt scared. Very, very scared. She looked up at him and caught his eye, wanting so desperately to believe him.
Outside, the first snowflakes began to fall.
Time was running out.
