Chapter 25:
Rabbitstrike felt her tail hang down. Dawn patrol. She hated dawn patrol! If cats were to invade they surely wouldn't at morning! They would do it at night when every cat was sleeping! It had been another moon since her sister's death and she was still glared at by every cat in camp, like they knew she did it. She hated it. Why couldn't she be like them? Have a mate? Have kits? Be a good warrior that every cat loved? Of course not! They would still treat her the same. They rechecked all the borders and headed back. Rabbitstrike struggled to keep up. Was it her or were they moving faster then usual? When she finally made it back to camp Brownpaw ran over to her.
"Rabbitstrike! Look there is white things floating around!" He mewed, pouncing at one of them.
"It's called snow." Rabbitstrike said, trying to ignore the urge to attack them. Once, she was told about snow, how it fell from the sky and piled up. Then it changed into water in the spring. Lionclaw told her snow could also be used for fighting advantages, though she never thought snow could be so cold!
"Rabbitstrike!" Rabbitstrike groaned as she heard Skyheart calling her. What did he want? Yesterday she couldn't hunt because she had to sort herbs. But she lugged herself over to the den.
"What?" She asked irritated.
"You have been getting plump lately." Skyheart noticed.
"You called me over to say how fat I was?!" Rabbitstrike felt her blood boil.
"No, I just am thinking you must not go out to hunt anymore." Skyheart said then said softly. "I think you are expecting kittens."
"What?" The whole world spun around Rabbitstrike. Kittens! She could not have kittens! No! No! No!
"I will not ask who the father is, but you must not hurt your body any more by running." Skyheart told her. "I will tell Mousestar and you will have to stay in the nursery. You have been pregnant for a while now and you have spent to long hurting your future kits. You may not leave the camp." Skyheart then walked out of the den. Rabbitstrike felt her belly churn. Kits?! Great StarClan no! She had a mission to do! She had to train with Lionclaw! Who was their father? Then it hit her.
"Bugeye." She said under her breath. Great, now what would she tell him.
"Rabbitstrike!" A voice yowled. Mousestar. Why did all cats must yell to get her attention. She tried to leap to her paws and found it hard, Skyheart was right. Her belly was getting big. She heaved herself over to where the leader was glaring at her.
"How are you expecting?!" He hissed.
"I am sorry." She put her head down in shame.
"And who is the father." He looked down at Brownpaw, as if expecting her to say it was him.
"It-It's not Brownpaw as if your expecting. I won't tell you who the father is. These kits will grow up without one perfectly fine." Rabbitstrike spat.
"Fine, but you are now confined to the camp, not allowed anywhere else." Mousestar told her. "I must announce this to the Clan." He left and called out to the camp. "Let all cats old enough to run through the moors come gather for a Clan meeting!" Rabbitstrike had to lift her big belly up again and join the Clan.
"What is it this time?" Goldenfeather asked, her belly was now gigantic. Her kits would be born any day now. Ivyfrost looked at Rabbitstrike, already guessing it was about her. Snow flaked the ground and Owlfeather growled as he stepped in a pile of it. "I told you." He whispered to Rabbitstrike as he walked by. Rabbitstrike let out a shiver and looked back up as Mousestar started to speak.
"Well, Rabbitstrike has some interesting news for us. She is expecting kits!" The cats murmured to each other and Goldenfeather glanced at her belly.
"She refuses to tell me who the father is, her kits will grow up father less." The cats let out murmurs of surprise.
"I would hate for Weaselfoot to now know who his kits were!" Goldenfeather gasped.
"She will stay in the nursery until they are born. That is all." Mousestar dismissed the Clan, gave Rabbitstrike a threatening glare, and walked back to his nest. Rabbitstrike had no choice but to go the awful nursery. What was she going to do? Bugeye would be a father and she would be a mother.
"Wow, I cannot believe you are having kits." Goldenfeather said quietly as Rabbitstrike shifted her belly weight to lay down.
"Me neither." She replied, hoping Goldenfeather would get the hint and leave her in peace but no such luck.
"Just make sure your kits will be smarter then you." Goldenfeather huffed. Rabbitstrike ignored her sharp comment and out her head in between her paws. Her poor kits. How would she tell them when she woke up some days with strange scratches when they were next to her the whole night? Rabbitstrike stared the the walls of the nursery, as if expecting something to happen.
"At least there is company, my kits are due any day now. I am so nervous." Goldenfeather admitted. Rabbitstrike perked her ears. Goldenfeather? Nervous? That never happened.
"Well, I am so scared of what the Clan will think of my kits." Rabbitstrike told her.
"You should be. Your so stupid!" Goldenfeather laughed. Rabbitstrike wanted to give her some good scratches but stopped herself and put her head back down. Goldenfeather was still Goldenfeather...
…
"Kits!" Lionclaw hissed in her ear. Rabbitstrike snapped awake. "How can you be having kits?" Rabbitstrike felt annoyed. Everyone had the same reaction.
"What?" Bugeye slid into the clearing.
"Your mate here is having kits." Lionclaw spat the words out with disgust.
"What?!" Bugeye stared at Rabbitstrike as if expecting her to say it was a joke.
"I am sorry." She whispered. A tear ran down her cheek. What had she done?
"They will make good WindClan warriors." He purred.
"Don't you want them to be ShadowClan warriors?" She asked, blinking some more tears out of her eye.
"No they would be treated horribly. I am sure they would be in better care in WindClan." Bugeye assured her. They will be treated worse in WindClan too! Rabbitstrike kept the thought in her head. Blackstripe then slid into the clearing.
"Great, who invited you?" Bugeye hissed at him.
"Darkwhisker said Lionclaw wanted me." He sneered.
"I did." Lionclaw said. "Now, I am seeing your fighting skills against each other, Blackstripe against Bugeye, The winner will face Rabbitstrike because she has been training longer and has the most potential out of you two."
Rabbitstrike beamed at the praise. She then sat down, her belly brushing against the snarly grass. How could she not have noticed sooner? Her belly was huge!
"But...Rabbitstrike's kits...?" Bugeye protested.
"I don't care about them. You two will just be careful not to damage her belly, her kits are just helping her fight harder." Lionclaw growled. Bugeye looked thoughtful but Rabbitstrike nodded to tell him she would be fine.
"Fight." Lionclaw told them. Blackstripe took no time to attack Bugeye, leaping at him and hooking his tendon with his claw. Bugeye fell to the ground and Blackstripe leaped onto his back. Bugeye bucked him off, sending Blackstripe soaring through the air and crashing back onto the ground. Bugeye ran after him and Blackstripe leaped back to his paws. They both attacked each other, Bugeye aiming for Blackstripe's face. He ducked and knocked Bugeye's paws out from under him again. Bugeye let out a screech as Blackstripe gave him a good scratch to the chest.
"That is good. Blackstripe you won. Bugeye, I expected better from you." Bugeye put his head down in shame.
"Now, Blackstripe and Rabbitstrike! Fight!" Rabbitstrike rose to her paws and Blackstripe instantly leaped at her. Rabbitstrike was ready, she ducked to the ground and slithered forward, leaving Blackstripe to crash to the ground.
"You will pay!" He growled. "I am going to finish what I started!" He reared onto his paws and leaped for her paws, trying to trip her. She just jumped into the air, making Blackstripe claw air, narrowly missing her belly.
"Not if I beat you instead!" Rabbitstrike taunted. Blackstripe tried to attack again but Rabbitstrike plowed him in the head first, he fell to the ground and she leaped on his back. He tried to buck her off but her kits caused to much weight and he was crush. Rabbitstrike winced as blood ran through her paws as she dug them into his neck. He let out a yowl of pain but Rabbitstrike didn't stop.
"This is what happens when you mess with a real Dark Forest warrior!" She meowed triumphantly. Blackstripe growled as a reply.
"Great job Rabbitstrike!" Lionclaw's eye shone with approval.
"Get up!" Rabbitstrike felt a voice yowl in her ear.
"Oh no! You clanmates are waking you up! Wake up fast!" Lionclaw hissed urgently. Rabbitstrike nodded and closed her eyes and the world faded into nothing...
"Finally!" Rabbitstrike opened her eyes to see Goldenfeather, her eyes were glazed with pain. "Help!" She groaned. Rabbitstrike remembered Volestep looked just the same when she kitted. Goldenfeather was having her kits!
