Loki closed his eyes as he held onto Mjolnir and it carried him away from his home, away from earth. Away through galaxies and galaxies of stars. He landed unceremoniously in the ice and his stomach did a backflip. But he controlled it. And he looked around at this land. That was unlike anything he had ever seen before. It was cold. That was the first thing he realized. So very cold. He zipped up his hooded jacket and slid the hood over his head but it basically did nothing. He still felt it biting through his clothes. An icy mist hung in the air. There was coldness and all things were. There was a dark windless sky.
"Did you think that nobody would look here." Loki asked looking around at this land that was dark and gloomy and no sun would ever shine here.
You're making a mistake.
"No, it seems that you made the mistake." Loki started walking and found himself sink knee deep in snow. He trudged forward it was like wading through water, only water moved and made way for you. The snow didn't offer such kindness it made you fight through it.
Mock me. All you want. There's a saying he who laughs…
Loki cut his self short.
"There's also a saying don't shit where you eat also known as, don't bury stones that could end the world where you were born." Loki stopped to catch his breath. "Why here Loki? I don't get it. You hate what you really are, you always have and yet you decide that this place is a good hiding place?' Loki started walking again. He had to keep moving. He was starting to feel weak and he knew why that was. Inside him. The other Loki was fighting and struggling because they were getting so close. But he would not be deterred if he had to start crawling he would.
You just answered the question yourself. I thought it was the very last place anyone would look. For such a long time it was our secret, a dirty little family secret nobody would know except for us.
"Well that was kind of a good plan I get it, until I came along.' Loki leaned against a rock with his back his breathing was becoming labored and he heard what sounded like the cracking of ice and he stopped. He stood dead still. He didn't move at all and he realized he was holding his breathe. He felt something move behind his back and he pushed away from what he had thought initially was a mountain made entirely of rock moved. It was no rock.
He stared up in awe.
It had arms and it had legs and a head and it towered over ice cold giant that was meters and meters taller than him.
"Woah.' Loki whispered.
The giant didn't seem to notice him and Loki was frozen in his step. As frozen as the land itself. He reminded himself that he had Mjolnir in his hand. He was safe. If the giant sensed him he could protect himself.
All Loki had to do was envision his power. He thrust mjolnir forward. All he had to do was envision the force necessary to deal with the frost giant and he'd kill it. And he felt an overwhelming sense of sadness. He didn't want to kill it however he marveled at it. The way it moved amongst the snow brushing the ice aside like nothing. It passed over him. He looked up at it this creature nearly tall as a building. He didn't want to harm it. He was one of them this was what he was supposed to be. Right?
"Is that what we are?"
Loki didn't answer he was sulking.
"Loki I asked you a question is this what we are?
The frost giant turned around and Loki sunk in the snow making himself invisible. And he waited for it to pass by. Eventually it did move along. And Loki breathed relief.
Yes that is what we really are.
"Why are we not giants? Why are we so small?" Loki asked pressing forward through the snow.
Loki contrary to popular belief I don't have all the answers.
"You don't have the answers I'm disappointed." Loki said.
Keep mocking me boy.
"I'm not." Loki whispered. Loki genuinely expressed his hurt. Now it felt too overwhelming. What was this place. This was home.
"Yes this is your real home." Loki stopped walking and he stopped breathing again. The voice was rough and it came from the left of him. He held Mjolnir tightly. "The one where you belong." Loki turned and he looked as the mist cleared from a black tarred river. A giant sat there. A giant that's face was dark and blue and he had what looked like tattoos etched on his skin. Where his ears was supposed to be there was green shields of emerald. The shield almost reached his mouth that he spoke of in that rough yet quiet almost patient voice. A voice that lulled Loki in the belief that he was safe here with this giant.
"You know me?" Loki asked the giant. Loki stepped closer to the river and saw that roots made up his legs roots that clung to a nearby tree.
"Aye I do. I am Mimir and I am the caretaker of this lake that runs to Yggdrasil the world tree." Mimir spoke looking at Loki and Loki saw softness in his eyes. Softness that didn't belong on such an enormous and proud body.
"What is this place?" Loki asked.
"This is a sacred place, one drink from the lake would give you unparrelled wisdom. Do you desire wisdom?" Loki shook his head. He desired normality. He desired his family. "Your father desired knowledge. Odin asked to drink from this lake to gain wisdom knowing the value of the water I refused him unless he gave me one of his eyes. He was willing to pay any price for wisdom and he sacrificed his eye are you prepared to make such a sacrifice?"
"Is that how he found out that I was going to end the world?" Loki asked.
"Perhaps."
Loki looked down at the watery depths and he thought o sacrifice and what knowledge could do.
"You already know why I am here don't you?' Loki asked.
Mimir nodded his head slowly like it took great effort.
"Are you going to stop me?"
"No, everything has already been set in motion." Mimir stared at Loki thoughtfully and before Loki could ask what he was staring at he spoke in that slow graveled voice. A voice that was weathered Loki thought millennia of life and it's comings and goings. Loki felt a shrill of fear in him suddenly. Mimir wanted the end. "He is going to kill you. You do know that do you not?"
"I know he is trying to." Loki turned away and wanted to run but he stood steadfast. His voice broke. "And if he succeeds and destroys both of us maybe that is the only sacrifice I am willing to make.' Loki turned and he ran. Ran through the snow till his lungs ached and his heart beat furiously but he wouldn't stop. He felt something wet against his upper lips and he touched lip and he looked down at his hand.
Blood.
He had not seen blood since the early days when his older Loki's powers had been given back to him. Loki didn't want to think about it.
I am not going to make this easy for you. You knew that did you not?
"I was ready." Loki lied and ahead of him he saw a castle that was carved in the ice. It stood proudly and full of menace.
Welcome to Utgard. It is the capital of Jotunheim and the stronghold of the giants.
"Is our father here? Our real father."
Laufey? No dear boy he is dead.
Loki felt his head begin to ache. The closer he was getting to Utgard trekking through the snow the more severe his pain was getting.
"What happened to Laufey?" Loki asked.
I killed him.
"You what?" Loki asked confused.
I killed him.
"You killed your own father?" Loki said full of disgust and confusion and realizing who and what he was dealing with although it was himself was not him at all.
He left me to die in an abandoned temple the temple you are going back to. And I was returning the favor by giving him death.
"But..." Loki struggled to grasp what he was hearing.
But nothing! He was ashamed of me. An innocent child who did not ask to be born and then he threw me away because I was nothing but an abomination he could not be seen with.
"So who runs things here now?"
Skrymir rules Utgard. This place made of glory.
And Loki he had been to a lot of places in his young life but nothing came compared to this place that made him feel like a small child. And now as he stood in front of the temple he felt almost insignificant.
That's because you are.
The temple was of course guarded. But Loki made himself invisible to their eyes. And pain screamed through his body Loki inside him wasn't giving up. Now that they were so close he was fighting at his hardest. So close now that Loki was getting angrier. And he was feeling the anger running through his blood. It was no longer blood it was as though the blood that had been running there had been turn into something else. Poison.
"It's too late.' Loki whispered. "Just give up."
I never give up. It's not in our nature
There were guards they were hanging around the temple and Loki crept around cloaked in invisbility. He just needed to get in the room. The room where once he had been abandoned.
He snuck into it and looked at it and felt sadness. No child should have been left here in this cold dark place. No child should be left to die. Blood flowed from his nose and he wiped it away and sunk to his knees.
He dug into the hard ice he used mjolnir's base to scrape the ice away and then he used his hands when he hit sand. And then there she was the stone. It was green. And it throbbed in glowing emerald like there was a fire of light inside it. And Loki thought such a small thing that could be held in his hand. How could it wield so much power?
"You." Loki stopped and stuck the stone into his jeans pocket. He looked up at the hideous faces of two giants. "Boy." One of them spoke. And Loki realized with dismay that he wasn't invisible. Loki was winning. Loki had made him visible.
"Hey guys." Loki said with a smile on his face. "What's up."
He pulled Mjolnir closer and they looked at it perplexed they knew what it was and they knew what it could do. They also knew it was not supposed to belong to a child.
"Nobody needs to get hurt here. I'll just leave." Loki said with that charming smile on his face.
"You're funny." One of the giants spoke.
Loki swung mjolnir and from their hands ice was created sharp shards of ice that was like blades. Blades that could cut into his flesh. Loki thought of his safety. He thought how close he was. How it was all almost over.
And then their was an explosion. And Loki shielded his eyes. He lifted his arm and looked up. The two giants that had been walking toward him threatening him had been blown into nothing but pieces of ice.
A figure immerged and Loki heard his older self.
Thanos.
Thanos. Who held in his hand a tablet and the stones that was embedded in it glowed brightly with it's power. Loki's hand moved on its own into his jeans pocket and he took out the green stone. Loki felt it. He felt himself losing his power. Not so much the strength but he felt himself fade. He was there but he was also not there. Because Loki. Old Loki was taking over and Loki slipped into the back. He slipped inside himself. Was this what death was. Was he dying.
'No" Was his very last words before the other Loki took over.
"Hello Loki." Thanos said.
"Hello old friend." Loki spoke enjoying the sound of his own voice. Enjoying the power that was coming back to his own body. One that had belonged to him. That had always been his.
"Forgive me your new form is very amusing.' Thanos said coming closer.
Loki looked down at himself. The teenage body he now was in.
"Yes. It will take some getting used to." Loki said sounding decidedly disgusted.
"You have the stone.' Thanos pointed out to what Loki was holding onto.
"I do." Loki flipped it in his hand with a mischevious grin of malice on his face.
"That will make amends for what you last promised me." Thanos said. And Loki shook his head.
"That is water under the bridge. This is a new age. A new beginning." Inside him Loki felt the child who had carried him there to his destiny scream and he smiled.
"What exactly are you proposing?" Thanos wanted to know.
"I want the tablet." Loki said pointing at it and Thanos looked at his and he laughed.
"I want the tablet and in exchange I will forgive you and allow you a place in my new world." Loki said.
"You are sorely mistaken. I am no one's slave." Thanos voice was angry.
"Who said anything about slavery our last deal can still exist with one minor exception I am in charge. Like I should be. Because it is I not you who brings in Ragnarok."
"You have a lot of nerve standing in front of me in that weak body and making demands. I could destroy you." Thanos threatened.
"I have to concede it needs some work done but it is almost at full capacity and now that I am in charge of it I can feel the strength returning even more quickly." Loki flipped the stone in his hand. "I also have this which is worth a lot more than what you have so leverage is on my side."
"Fine. You and I. "
What was happening one minute he had been in command the next moment the other Loki had been granted access to his body the moment he had touched the stone. And the feeling he had felt initially was that he had been feeling the effects of the stone and Loki and the combination was lethal. This had been a trap. He felt it not with devastating loss he had been so naive that it could be that e easy. So simple. Why would Loki known for his mischief for his mayhem just let him know where the stone was.
Why would Loki give up so easy.
"I told you I never give up." Loki spoke.
"Who are you talking to?" Thanos asked.
"The child who once embodied this vessel is still here he'll be gone soon I can feel him dying and he's death will come more swiftly if you hand me the tablet." Thanos mulled it over and he handed it over and internally there came a scream of death of everything ending.
No!
A/N You didn't think for one second that Loki was going to make this easy did you? Come on he is the God of mischief give him a lot of credit. Where did our other Loki just go? I know not where. Did he just die? You'll have to wait and see!
I explained Jotunheim in a previous chapter, and I really did not want to sound the same. There's only so many ways to explain a damn ice waste land so I tried to make it a little more interesting by having an actual frost giant interaction with Loki and yes Mimir is from Norse mythology so is the capital of Jotunheim Utgard. Skrymir does not rule Jotunheim since Laufey's death that I just made up. I like the interaction between Loki and Mimir besides a storytelling factor where you find out why Odin lost his eye it also begs the question how much wisdom did he get and why didn't it let him make better decisions? Who knows anyways I'll shut up and thank you for reading! Take care!
