Chapter 16 Part 2 Section 1: Assaulting Air Over Shimitā no fōto (Fort of the Scimitar)

Okinawa

April 1st 1945

It was not funny and no one was laughing when they found out they were assaulting the heavy defended island which were most likely heavily defended by the most fanatic Ysterplaat defenders who will not stop fighting until they are dead and know the island very well and had 6 years to fortify and refortify the island into the almost impregnable fortress on the day most famous for pranks and tricks. They knew the battle will definably result in a high number of causalities. In attempt to bolster the strength, the Supreme Allied Command, which was made of General Eisenhower, commander of the Western European Front; Marshal Zhukov, commander of the Eastern Front; Admiral Mountbatten, commander of the South East Asian Front; Fleet Admiral Nimitz, commander of the Pacific Front; Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, commander of all Allied Ground Forces; Air Marshal Katherine Litvyak, commander of all Allied Air Forces; Grand Admiral Andrew Cunningham, commander of all Allied Naval Forces; Vice Admiral Akagi, commander of all Allied Ship Girls and Field Marshal Pavetovsky, commander of all Allied Poselentsy Forces; decided to station the 508th Joint Fighter Wing aka the Mighty Witches over from the Atlantic along their taskforce, Joint Naval Taskforce 49 under Admiral Forrest Sherman. It was surprising to note that Halsey's flagship, USS Enterprise was once a part of Taskforce 49 until 1942, when the Big E was called over to the Pacific to cover Hornet and Sōryū in the Doolittle raid, taking her place was USS Ranger for about a year until USS Essex took over. Grace was happy to that Jane Thach; an old friend of hers was still flying. Jane Thach and the rest of the Mighty Witches were surprised to see the ship girls. They were also amazed to see what Christiane and Christine Halsey have become. Taskforce 49 was small taskforce with only 3 carriers, Essex, Victorious, Shōkaku with an escort force of 3 light cruisers and 8 destroyers. Another JFW that called up to the Pacific theatre was the 505th "Mirage Witches" Joint Fighter Wing. Also additional JFWs were earmarked to head to the Pacific, most prominent, the 501st "Strike Witches" JFW were to be pulled over once the war in Europe was over. But the battle was still going to be bloody.

Thomas' POV

It has been three years of war and now it is coming to an end. I got promoted again, now I am a Colonel, if this goes on, I might find myself in the same position as my uncle. I am now in command of the regiment and 2000 marines in it. I am still with Kitakami and we are still head over heels for each other, her sister Ooi got herself a partner, who you ask? He is that friend of mine that I told you about a few years back, don't remember? Well can't blame you it has been quite hectic these past months; well Ooi's new partner is Oliver, captain of a new marine battalion in another regiment. It seems like Kitakami and Ooi are not the only ship girls in a relationship, oh no not by a mile. Let's see from what Kitakami told me, Kaga is dating a dive bomber pilot; Tenryuu has the skipper of the USS Albacore, Commander Alfred F. Jones wrapped her finger and vice versa; Yamato has fallen for the captain of the IFN Takao, Captain Joe Takenouchi, a Liberion-Fusoan who in all respects is a male version of Yamato but with short dark blue hair and he has glasses; Kongō is cloud nine whenever she is with Rear Admiral Minato Akiyama, Vice Admiral Jisaburo's 2IC. Ashigara managed to get herself a tanker and surprisingly it was now Colonel Patton's second in command, Lt Colonel Ivan Harrison and last for this list, Nachi is in love with a Malayan Captain by the name of Adnan bin Saidi who is war hero for his actions in the defensive battle of Malaya although she would deny it.

"So today is the day" A private said as he leaned against.

"Yes it is, private, today we will be assaulting that island" I said pointing towards Okinawa

"Colonel!" He snapped to attention as he turned to face me and saluted. I smiled and returned his salute.

"At ease private…" I said as I lowered my hand.

"Wilkinson, sir, Private Wilkinson of 2nd Company" The private said.

"Oh, you are from second company, my friend is the commander of the company, he is a good man" I said.

"Colonel Eisenhower" Someone called out. I turned to face who called me which made I smile as it was Captain Isabelle Ramirez, now commander of the armoured battalion in my regiment. She shot in height as she was about my height now without her strikers. She also has gained a more mature look. She has also gotten new strikers which were the new M-32 Parker (T-32) heavy tank strikers with its 90 mm tank gun. She has been awarded the Navy Cross for her ballsy attack on an enemy position in the advance down Luzon.

"Yes, Captain Ramirez, what is it?" I asked.

"When do we head out" Ramirez asked.

"We will be going into the LVTs with two hours, so go prep your troops" I said.

"Aye, Colonel Eisenhower" Ramirez said as she turned away and headed for her company.

"I suggest you go prepare as well, Private Wilkinson" I said.

"Yes sir" The private saluted before racing off for his company's area. Just then the ship's radio came to life

"Good morning, everyone, this is Kantai Hibiscus and you are tuning to "Waves Radio" wishing you a very good morning this April morning, today is going to be historic day, if you are not aware, today, April 1st of 1945, units of the Allied Ground Forces will be assaulting the peninsula of Korea and liberating the peninsula from the grasp of the Ysterplaat thus opening a second front in the Cina campaign, let's all pray that "Operation Bashful" goes on without any hiccups. Now…" Kantai Hibiscus announced. Kantai Hibiscus or her real name Kirishima is a radio announcer in a new radio station that she herself created called "Waves". She did so because she said that she always wanted to do so and when she got the go ahead from Admiral Halsey, she went to create a radio station on Monarch's ship body, which Monarch was more than happy to let her as it would give some use to HMS Monarch's ship body other than being a fighting platform. At first she was the only one but then Naka joined in as resident entertainer as she is the idol of the fleet, heck she is the Allied forces in the Pacific's idol as her singing is so popular. Ōyodo also joined in as a news reader while Iowa and New Jersey joined as comedians. U-2511 or Annalisa as she prefers to be called now came on board as a technical manager; this doesn't include the Liberions, Fusoans, Britannians and Australisans radio operators and technical personnel who joined in to make Waves Radio what it is today, the Pacific's fighting men's favourite radio station. Now the fake operation that Kirishima is announcing about is a part of an elaborate cover up operation called Operation Gloze where we were to fool the Ysterplaats into thinking that it was Korea not Okinawa was the next target on the Allied forces conquest of liberation. This operation was suggested by Akagi and it was working as reconnaissance aircraft and submarines report a decrease in the flow of supplies to Okinawa and there was an increase of Ysterplaat transports leaving Okinawa.

"I hope our Jungen don't get fooled by that radio message, Oberst" Another guy said. I turned and saw it was Lt Colonel Erich Grimm, my current second in command, he is still an excellent man and fine soldier. He has own himself, the Navy Cross and an Iron Cross for what he did back in the push for southern Luzon. He replaced my old second in command, James who was transferred to another regiment of the division.

"Don't worry, the men aren't going to fall for it, they know too well that the attack is here" I said.

"That is true" Grimm said as he joined me at the ship's railing.

"Be careful on the railing sirs" LST 913 said.

"Don't worry, we will be careful" Grimm said.

"Marines are careful, only in combat we are not" I said.

"If you say so sirs" LST 913 answered.

"So, your girl will be joining us" Grimm said.

"Yep, she asked me for rifle shooting classes" I said.

"Yes, Akagi" Takao said.

"Thank you, Takao, you can return to your office" Akagi said.

"Thank you Akagi" Takao said as she left the room. Akagi proceeded to read the roster.

"So how was your holiday in Guam, sir?" Akagi asked as she used the telephone to contact Halsey.

["Oh, I am doing just fine, Akagi, thanks for asking, the girls are having a lot fun at the beach and my wife is actually quite eager to see all of you girls"] Halsey answered.

"That is nice to hear" Akagi smiled.

["How is Ozawa handling things around there?"] Halsey asked.

"Oh everything is just fine, sir, Ozawa is managing the fleet quite well" Akagi answered as she turned her chair to the side to look out the open porthole behind her, she saw the USS Enterprise and the HMS Courageous in formation launching their aircraft compliments into battle for another sortie. She wondered when the last time she launched her own planes into battle was.

["That is good to hear"] Halsey said.

"We got two more ships in the taskforce, sir" Akagi said.

[Oh, and what ships are these?"] Halsey asked.

"They are the USS Nevada and the USS Oklahoma, sir" Akagi said.

["More Pearl Harbour veterans, I think it just to allow the ships to exact revenge on the Ysterplaat"] Halsey said. Akagi took a drag from her pipe before answering.

"And apparently, the captain of the Nevada is your son, sir" Akagi smiled as she recalled meeting the younger Halsey, William Frederick Halsey III as captain of the battleship, USS Nevada. He was different from his father as he was slightly more humble and he was more soft-spoken, not mention he wore glasses but he had the same determination, tactical prowess and calm composure like her father. She was amused to see Nevada fly into cloud nine when she saw her ship body in all of her new glory. Halsey's son which everyone calls Will said that all the battleships that was at Pearl Harbour were present around Okinawa, all except for USS Utah, which was still sitting at the bottom of Pearl Harbour.

["Is that so? No wonder I haven't heard from him for quite some time"] Halsey said. Just then someone knocked on the door.

"It seems that someone is at the door, I will speak to you again another time sir" Akagi said.

["Don't worry, I will back in a few days, anyway, goodbye Akagi"] Halsey said.

"Good bye, sir" Akagi said as she placed the transmitter on the receiver.

*KNOCK*KNOCK*

"Come in" Akagi said. The door opened and Akagi raised an eyebrow as she who it was. It was Admiral Raymond Spruance and Lt General Buckner, commander of all Allied Amphibious forces for Operation Iceberg, the retaking of Okinawa.

"Good morning, Akagi" Spruance said.

"Morning, ma'am" Buckner said.

"Good morning to you too sirs, what can I do for you?" Akagi asked before taking another puff from her pipe and exhaling the smoke as she turned her chair to face her desk.

"We came here to ask for your assistance, Akagi" Spruance said.

"What do want from me, commander?" Akagi asked.

"I will let Buckner explain that" Spruance said. The lieutenant general cleared his throat.

"We are asking that you send some of your ship girls ashore to assist the retaking of Okinawa" Buckner said.

"Why? Isn't the support my girls are giving right now not enough?" Akagi asked, her face hinting a sense of annoyance. Buckner was surprised by this but he kept his cool.

"No, it is not that, the support you girls are giving is excellent, it is just that…um…we need…ah" Buckner tried to formulate a sentence that would not offend the officer, whose forces he needed for support of his men.

"Alright, Buckner, give me your justifications for the need of the support of my girls for your men on the ground and I will weigh the pros and cons of your request" Akagi smiled. Spruance has seen this smile before; it was the smile Akagi used to see how far the person is willing to convince her in order to get her to agree with their opinion or proposal. He himself had fallen victim to "Akagi's Smile" once before when he asked Akagi to station her destroyer girls along the radar pickets a few weeks earlier.

"Well, my men are going to be attacking a heavily fortified island so our boys and girls are going to need some heavy fire support which the naval and aerial forces can provide but they will take time for them to either get their guns at the right positions or get airborne and reach the area which by then more of my men would be taken out of action or the targets have moved out of the area which would deem the fire support ineffective, if you girls were to accompany us, then the targets we light up will be taken out within minutes. Besides Okinawa is a mountainous island so not all the places our soldiers go, the tanks can reach, if you go, then those boys can at least know they have some heavy gun support to back them up, and your carrier girls can help but sending scout planes to recce the area or launch sorties on target almost immediately. Now we have the submarine girls, now I know that they are almost completely out of their element on land but, they have stealth which allow them to sneak up on the Ysterplaat bastards and give them a nasty surprise or they can be snipers because you have to consider a lot of variables when you fire a torpedo which they can use that skill to adjust the trajectory of their shots" Buckner said.

"Hm" Akagi hummed as she thought about it.

"Let me make it worth your while, we would add another 50 dollars to their salary as hell's pay for all the harm they are going to get themselves into" Buckner said.

"Lt General Buckner, I have made my decision, I will send my ship girls into the ground war but not all" Akagi said.

"Why is that? Buckner asked.

"Well, Simon, someone has to look after our carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and your precious troop transports from any naval or aerial attack" Spruance said.

"That is true" Buckner said.

"So Akagi, how many ship girls are you sending ashore?" Spruance asked.

"Well, I have under my command; five ship girl flotillas which four are stationed here while the 3rd Ship Girl Flotilla made of 96 ship girls under Vice Admiral Hermes is in the Indian Ocean supporting operations there, the first one, the 1st Ship Girl Flotilla under me which is 236 ship girls strong, then the 2nd Ship Girl Flotilla under Vice Admiral Johnston which is 143 ship girls strong, followed by the 4th Ship Girl Flotilla made of 102 ship girls with Vice Admiral Moskva as its commander and last but not least, the 5th Ship Girl Flotilla made of 55 ship girls under Rear Admiral Gneisenau. Of these four ship girl flotillas, the 4th and the 5th Ship Girl Flotillas have the least experience in naval and anti-air combat, seeing they were formed after the destruction of the core on the top of Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima created a burst of energy felt for in some reports about 35 km away and because they were created after combat, they had little or no combat experience, so I have decided that I will send the 1st and the 2nd Ship Girl Flotilla to assault Okinawa while the 4th and the 5th watch over the ships" Akagi said.

"That will allow them to gain experience that they would need if the war protracts any longer" Spruance said.

"Just hope that it doesn't come to that, gentlemen" Akagi said solemnly.

"Yes, let's hope it doesn't come to that as well" Buckner said.

"So, I will inform Johnston and my subordinates about the order and you can inform your men about their new fire support" Akagi said.

"Thank you, Akagi" Buckner said as he and Akagi stood up and saluted each other, the former of the two left the room.

"Well, Akagi, I need to inform the rest of the fleet commanders about this" Spruance said as he stood up. Akagi saluted him which he returned. Spruance then began to walk out and Akagi sat down.

"This is going to be one hell of a fight" Akagi thought as she drank sip from her green tea. She then called up Johnston and the rest of her flotilla commanders.

Present day

USS LST 913

Well, let's get ready" I said as I stood up from the railing.

"Alright, see you in the LVTs" Grimm said.

"Stay alive, Grimm, you are my 2IC, I need a right hand man if I am to lead this regiment" I said.

"You too, this regiment needs a leader" He said as he headed for his LVT and I to mine. I have dropped the Thompson because it was getting old and I lost it because it was sliced in half by an Ysterplaat bayonet so I instead picked up a M1 Garand but this one was a different one as it is the M1E20 Garand which is most respect is a M1918 BAR in a M1 Garand, it has the clip to boot. I checked the "Barand"; satisfied I slung an ammo pouch over my shoulder and strapped my helmet on. I then head to the LVT where my platoon was located. The platoon was already gathered inside the LVT.

"Morning colonel" A marine said.

"Morning, Chuck" I said.

"Good morning, colonel" Another said.

"Morning to you, Harry" I replied.

"How are you, sir?" A marine asked.

"I am fine, Marcus" I answered. The rest of the marines saluted, greeted me as I got into the LVT.

"This is USS LST 913 to all marines; please board your amphibious assault vehicles now, the assault will be commencing within a few minutes so please be ready for war and may god bless you all" LST 913 said.

"Alright, you heard the lady, everyone get into your landing crafts now!" I barked. I heard the rumbling of feet as the men who were not yet in their landing crafts or amtracs clambered into them. The massive steel doors of the ship began to open up and soon the amtracs began rolling into the water. It was blinding at first but we were soon in the open sea where the rest of the LVTs were and we soon headed for our landing beaches.

"Prepare for war boys" I thought.

Jane Thach's POV

Today was the day we attack the last Ysterplaat bastions in the Pacific. My joint fighter wing, the 508th Mighty Witches were called over from the Atlantic to support this massive attack. I could see why they need all the help they could get their hands. The island was infested by the black bastards. I then saw the fighters that accompanied us; they were mostly Liberion and Fusoan fighters both props and jets.

"Look at all those ships, this is an awesome sight" Jamie Swett said as we flew over the convoy.

"Yeah, that is true" I said. I was amazed by the amount of military might that we had in the Pacific theatre, I knew we had a lot but I didn't know we had this much equipment in the Pacific.

"Well, this is the last bastion of the Ysterplaat in the Pacific so command would want to ensure that the chances for victory are high" Dorothy Baker said.

"So, Jane, what is the order for today?" Shindō Mie asked.

"We are to protect the LVTs and landing crafts from enemy attacks; we need as many troops on the ground as possible if this operation is to succeed" I said.

"Yes ma'am, we will watch the skies for any enemy aircraft" Delia M. Jeram said.

"This is Lt General Buckner; I am the commander of all Allied ground forces for the amphibious landing, pilots and witches in the air please provide adequate air support to the landing forces or this operation will fail and we will be in a slaughter" Lt General Buckner radioed.

"Aye, sir, the Hell Born Witches will sweep the skies clean" I heard my old friend Grace hollered onto over the radio.

"We, Ice Cold Witches will freeze the Ysterplaat dead" Touko Minoru responded.

"The Good Wrench Witches are ready to give it all they got, sir" Rita Gonzales radioed.

"This is the 512th; we will bring the thunder to fight sir!" Teresa Williams radioed.

"This is 505th, my girls are glad that we are advancing instead of retreating sir" Grete M. Gollob radioed.

"Good to hear that" Grace radioed.

"This is Group Captain Alysia Harkov, commander of the 513th "World War Witches, we may be new but we will fight!" I heard another JFW commander radioed. Since 1944, a number of new joint fighter wings were created to reinforce the frontlines.

"This is Major Joey Henderson, callsign Hellfire, commander of the 514th "Turbo Jet Witches" to all allied units; my witches are ready for combat" A Liberion witch radioed.

"This is Commodore Adolphine Langsdorff callsign Firebird of the 515th "Gall Force Witches", we are ready for action" A Karlslander witch who was just to the top left from me radioed.

"Hey everyone, this is Admiral Yukikaze of Joint Naval Taskforce 59, I will be joining the fight as well" Yukikaze radioed.

"This is Vice Admiral Annabel Nimitz of Joint Naval Taskforce 38 to allied combatants; I too have decided to join the fight to expulse the Ysterplaat invaders, now let us destroy these foreigners before they take us out" Annabel announced.

"Well, at least we know we have a lot of back-up" Karibuchi Takami joked.

"That is true" Dorothy Baker said. I watched as we flew over the landing crafts and amtracs as they headed for the beaches. Soon the radio came back alive as the water began to erupt from shells splashing into the water.

"This is Colonel Ironsides of the 5th Royal Marine Regiment to aerial units; can you take out those heavy guns? They are harassing the boys" A Britannian colonel radioed.

"Roger, this is Jane Thach, we will engage those targets" I said, "Girls, let's get those shore batteries"

"Got it, let's go Delia" Jamie said.

"Alright, I am coming Jamie" Delia said as she and Jamie flew in and strafed the neuroi guns. The guns soon exploded and the number of water geysers soon declined.

"This is Rear Admiral Bismarck of the KMS Wilhelm I battlegroup to airborne units! We have incoming hostile aircraft from south! Take them out before they do damage to our troops" A Karlslander commander shouted.

"This is Vice Admiral Harrison of the USS Wyoming battlegroup; we got Ysterplaat fliers from the north east! Take them out!" A Liberion commander radioed.

"Alright, finally some action! Girls, let's send those bastards to hell!" Grace shouted.

"Why send them to our home?" Charlie R asked.

"Yeah, let's dispose of these vermin somewhere else" Charlie said.

"Yeah, you are right, the devil is probably had enough of these shitheads, alright, let's send them to Davy Jones' Locker then" Grace said.

"Alright, let's go get the bastards!" Janice radioed.

"Destroy these inferiors!" An Ysterplaat fighter barked.

"We will show them why we are the conquerors of the galaxy!" Another shouted.

Third Person POV

"Oh, you want a fight? You got a fight! EAT LEAD YOU BASTARDS!" Josephine shouted with her 50 cal MG blazing.

"Shoot them all to hell!" Jamie barked as she mowed an Ysterplaat fighter with her 50 cal.

"Time of death, NOW" Olivia shouted as she gave a good serving of .303 rounds to the Ysterplaat.

"You are benched Kamerad, for life" Helen barked as she strafed an Ysterplaat fighter.

"Firing missiles" Christiane shouted as she unleashed a wave of missiles towards the Ysterplaat fighters

"Have some 30 mm special, it's on the house!" Christine shouted as her 30 mm cannon cut an Ysterplaat fighter bomber to more manageable sizes.

"They call me Skull for a reason and this is why! Charlie R shouted as she head butted the exposed core of an Ysterplaat fighter.

"Oh, looks like they are going to have to fix you up, in hell!" Charlie laughed as she took a swig of whiskey.

"Boom goes the cores!" Rosemary shouted as she threw a grenade at a neuroi core.

"Your existence is a waste!" Kazuko shouted as she smacked an Ysterplaat with her cannons.

"I will send you to hell, piece by bloody piece" Kaiota smiled as she electrocuted an Ysterplaat.

"You have lived a miserable life but your death is very entertaining" Okunima hollered.

"Do not mess with the Liberion Navy bitches!" Jane shouted.

"Your screams fill my heart with joy" Heidi mocked.

"I take it you never meant an Aotearoan before, well you are in luck pal, well this will be your first and last!" Janie barked as she surprised an Ysterplaat forces.

"Anata wa watashi no burēdo de shinu" Akanari barked as she lashed at an Ysterplaat fighter with her katana

"Hoorah, don't fuck with a marine! Especially this fucking marine" Grace barked.

"Double tap, double tap, double tap, double tap, double tap, double tap, good beer, good beer, who doesn't like a good beer" Eva sang as she fired her 37 mm cannon.

"See you in hell mate!" Roselle sneered.

"Oh, you look so beautiful, NOW DIE!" Janie shouted as she slashed at an Ysterplaat core with a bayonet.

"By the decree of the Princess of Rabaul, all Yesters are to be executed by her, who is me" Saita shouted as she fired her Type 99 LMG at the Ysterplaat fighters. The battle in the air intensified as the witches, planes and fairies, Poselentsys clashed with the Ysterplaat. Meanwhile on the beaches, the Allied soldiers and witches were assaulting the Ysterplaat defenses. The more aggressive were the probably the Fusoans as it was their homelands that they were liberating. It was because they wanted to show their newly established Imperial Fusoan Marine Corps (IFMC) is as capable as the vaunted and feared Liberion Marine Corps. The Liberions were the second most aggressive as they have forged a deep and close friendship with the Fusoans and they were more than happy to give the Fusoans help to liberate the island. Now this aggression combined with those from the European combatants.
