"I'll let you talk to her alone," Casey nodded at Severide before he stepped out of the room.
Severide had every intention of including Casey in the conversation, but he knew Casey might not have gotten through to her completely and he might have better luck alone. He closed the door behind him and gestured for Grace to sit on her bed. He grabbed her desk chair and sat down in front of her.
He was hesitating, unsure how to start the conversation. "You know I love you, right?" He grinned.
Grace frowned but nodded. "Yeah, of course." She said. "We're family."
"We are, but I'm not going to talk to you as a family member right now," he tried to explain. "I'm going to talk to you as someone who cares about you, like a friend."
"Okay," Grace shook her head. "Since when do you care about acting like a friend? You always act like a parent and you never care what we think."
"I know," he nodded. "But, this is different, Grace. I need you to listen to what I'm saying and I don't think you will you hear me if you think I'm trying to parent me."
"You're freaking me out, Kelly." She said. "Just say it."
"When Shay died, it tore me a part," he said. "And, I ended up married to someone who was reeling from their own loss."
"You said you don't regret Brittany," Grace argued. "You said you helped each other get through it."
"Yeah, I did say that," he nodded. "But, do you see her here? That's my point, Grace. We leaned on each other in a bad time because grief causes you to hold onto what's there. Make no mistake about it, it hurt when it ended, but it would have hurt a whole lot more if we weren't both in the same boat. We walked away from each other once we were ready to deal with reality. I don't want you to get hurt if he ends up walking away from you when he decides to start dealing with his brother's death."
Grace was quiet for a moment before she shrugged and shook her head. Severide saw the tears forming in her eyes. "All my life, I always felt like I never get what I want, but I got him." She said. "And now everyone keeps telling me he's using me to feel better."
"I'm not trying to make you feel like you're not good enough for him," he said. "You are, you are probably too good for him, but we're trying to protect you."
"I know," she stressed. "But, now I'm scared it's not real and I don't know what to do because," she shook her head, leaving the thought hanging.
"What?" he asked. "Hey, come on, no judgement."
"I'm seventeen and he's my third," she said, shaking her head again. "And, lately I just feel like a whore or something."
"Hey," Severide said sharply as he frowned. "You're not, not even close. I don't want to hear you talk about yourself like that again, you got it?"
"Kelly," she looked at him with tears in her eyes. "I need this to work, because if it doesn't, what does it say about me? That I make the worst choices and let guys use me? I mean, I got back with Tyler after everything and then there was Ben,"
"You didn't do anything," he cut her off. "Your feelings are genuine and your relationships are all very natural. But, it's Jimmy who would have made the mistake if his intentions aren't true."
"And, are they?" She asked. "You talked to him."
"I don't know, that's why I want you to be careful," he said. "He says it's real and I think he cares about you, but I don't know for sure. You need to talk to him because as much as we all want to protect you, only you can protect your heart."
Grace nodded, wiping the tears from her eyes. "I know."
Severide smiled with a slight frown as he watched her. "Okay, come here," he said as he sat on the bed next to her and pulled her into his embrace. "That's my friend speech, as your family, he knows if he hurts you he has me to answer to."
Grace smirked. "You won't be the only one, but you might be the most intimidating."
OOOOO
A few days later, Casey was rushing around that morning before his shift, trying to cook the breakfast and keep the himself and the twins on time. Severide had spent the night at Stella's and Gabby had her own place now, he was capable of doing the parent thing alone, but he missed the help. He wanted to stop by Gabby's on the way to work, but he wasn't sure he was going to have time. Jake had slept late and Grace hogged their bathroom, making Casey extra happy they had a second bathroom.
Grace appeared in the hallway, running around the living room looking for something. She was in leggings and a tank top and her hair was thrown up in a twisted bun, something she only did when she was in a hurry. She seemed frustrated and he frowned as he watched her.
"What are you looking for, Grace?" He asked.
"My dance jacket," she mumbled. "I haven't seen it since, well, you know."
"It's in the closet," Casey said. "Speaking of that encounter, what's going on with you two?"
Grace shrugged as she grabbed the jacket. "I don't know," she sighed as she looked at him. "I told him I needed some time and he didn't take it well."
"Did he hurt you?" Casey asked with a heavy frown.
"No, he just won't talk to me." She said. "He said if I want space he'll give me space and then he hung up on me. I tried to call back but he didn't answer, so we're not talking."
"Maybe that's for the best," he said. "Come eat some breakfast."
"I'm not hungry," she said as he put on her jacket and Casey noticed how thin her arms were. "I'm just going to have coffee."
"You don't need coffee," he said.
"I need the energy." She argued as she sat down at the table.
"Then eat some eggs and toast, they'll give you all the energy you need." He said, placing a plate in front of her, raising his eyebrows at her as he leaned on the chair beside her. "Should I be worried?"
"Ugh, Dad, no." She sighed as she dramatically bit into the toast. "Happy?"
"We'll see," he nodded as he grabbed two more plates and set them on the table just as Jake was coming into the kitchen. "Cutting it close there, bud."
"I overslept," he said with a rough cough as he grabbed for the hot sauce.
Casey frowned, sitting down at the head of the table between with the twins on either side. "Are you sick?"
"No, I'm fine," he shook his head, mouth full of food. "Just a cough."
"And, fatigue," Grace added. "You slept in."
"I slept in because I was up late studying for our math test," he said.
"Yeah, okay, since when do you study if it doesn't involve getting to stick your tongue down Rachel's throat after every question?" Grace asked.
"I can study on my own," Jake snapped back at her.
"Yeah, but you never do, unless," Grace paused and nodded. "You're close to being benched."
"Shut up, Grace." Jake mumbled.
"Jake," Casey warned as he eyed him. "Your grades better not be slipping."
"Not any more than her weight is slipping," Jake deflected. "They're not, and they won't be if I do well on this test. And, I didn't tell you because I was trying to avoid the extra pressure."
"Fine, but next time you tell me at the first sign of trouble or I'll be monitoring your homework schedule," Casey turned to Grace. "And, I'll be monitoring your eating habits."
Grace rolled her eyes. "That's not necessary."
"You barely touched your breakfast that I had to make you eat and let me remind you that I do not want a repeat of the diet pills incident," Casey said. "Dishes in the sink, we're going to be late."
OOOOO
"Lieutenant Casey," Connie said as she came into the kitchen holding a piece of a paper after they returned from a call later in the day. "A Susan Weller came by while you were out on a call, and the high school called. They wouldn't tell me any details, so I don't know which one was involved, or what it was about, but they left you a voicemail."
Casey frowned as he took the slip from Connie. "Thanks, Connie." He said as he pulled out his cell phone to check his messages.
"What's up?" Severide asked when he hung up. "Who's in trouble?"
"Surprisingly, neither." Casey said. "Grace hurt her shoulder again in cheer practise at lunch, she's getting checked out at the hospital. I have to go pick her up."
"I'll cover for you," Herrmann said before he was asked.
Casey nodded and headed out of the firehouse and over to Chicago Med. He arrived just as Will Halstead was coming back to her room with her imaging results. "She's fine," he reassured. "Even if she is becoming a frequent flyer."
"No pun intended?" Casey asked with a smirk.
"Happy accident," he shrugged as they walked into the room. "Grace, you are a really lucky girl."
Grace was sitting on the bed with her shoulder wrapped in ice and towels. "I don't feel lucky, I feel really unlucky and clumsy getting hurt all the time."
"Listen, you really need to take it easy for a while." He said. "Your shoulder is weakened from the separation and the repeated almost separations, you are on the verge of a rotator cuff tear, so you need to back off and let your shoulder heal and strengthen."
"I can't," she said. "We have competitions and games to cheer for, and college scouts to impress."
"I understand, but if you don't rest and you have a rotator cuff tear, the surgery and recover time will take you completely out of cheering indefinitely." Dr. Halstead explained. "Take it easy for a few weeks, go to physical therapy and protect your shoulder."
"Can't I just get a cortisone injection?" Grace asked, turning to Casey. "Dad, please?"
"No, absolutely not," Casey shook his head with a frown and nodded at Dr. Halstead. "I will make sure she rests it. Grace, let's go."
Grace sighed dramatically as she jumped off the bed and followed Casey out of the Emergency Room. She ignored him on the drive home, convinced he was wrong and that resting her shoulder would ruin her chances of being in the competitions. She had every intention of bypassing everyone in the house and hiding out in his office, but he wouldn't let her mope around.
"Grace, kitchen," Casey said from behind her.
"I have homework," she mumbled.
"Your right arm is in a sling," he said. "Dinner will be ready soon."
"I'm not hungry," she said.
"Too bad, you're eating something." He said as he reached out and grabbed her left arm, stopping her from walking any further. "What is going on with you?"
"I don't want to be here," she sighed heavily as she looked around. "He's here, and it's weird because no one else knows. And, I hurt my shoulder because I was distracted thinking about him and now I can't cheer. Not to mention that you and Jake think I have some kind of eating disorder because you're comparing my eating habits to that of yours and in case you haven't noticed, I am not a teenage boy or a grown man. And maybe, I lost a little weight because I'm so stressed about all of this."
"Okay, okay," Casey said with raised eyebrows as he leaned down into her view and tried to get her to calm down. "Baby, just take a deep breath, we will sort all this out after dinner."
Grace sighed and let him guide her into the kitchen. "Okay," she mumbled.
Casey sat at the head of the table with Grace on the inside and Dawson on the outside beside him. Jake flew in after basketball practise just in time for dinner and loaded his plate with food before sitting with Severide. Casey placed a plate in front of Grace, with noticeably smaller portions that Grace knew Dawson was responsible for.
"Thanks," she smiled slightly.
Dawson smiled back. "I know some good physical therapists that can help you strengthen your shoulder," she said.
Grace nodded and picked at her food, zoning out of the various conversations that were going on. Everyone was consumed in other things, the room buzzing with chatter until the chief appeared. His presence was enough to cause people to settle down, but then they heard him raise his voice and the room fell silent.
"You got my brother killed and I'm going to have your badge for that, I promise you." Jimmy yelled.
"You are suspended until further notice." The chief said calmly.
"I'm not taking order from you, nobody should." He said.
"Walk out that door," Boden said. "Or I will put you through it."
Jimmy walked away, angrily and upset as Grace watched him. He slammed into the doors, making a scene on his way out. Grace didn't know what to do, she was worried about him, but she felt Casey's hand on her arm, even though he wasn't looking at her, he was looking at the Chief, and then a silent conversation occurred between him and Severide.
"Daddy," she mumbled.
"Stay here, Grace." He said as he got up and headed for the chief's office with Severide.
Grace waited until he disappeared into the office, considered staying at the table for about half a second before she went after Jimmy. No one really noticed her leave, making it hopeful that no one would follow her out, try to stop her, or come after her.
"Jimmy, wait," Grace called, running after him in the driveway as he headed for his car. "Will you just talk to me?"
"Why should I?" He said as he spun around. "You're the one that wanted space, so why are you out here?"
"I don't know," she shrugged. "I just wanted to make sure you're okay."
"Oh, I'm great," he said. "My brother is dead, I just got suspended from work, and a girl I really care about is messing with my head."
"I'm not messing with your head, if you would have let me explain instead of childishly hanging up on me, you'd know that I care about you too but I'm scared I'm just some distraction for you because of your grief." She said in a rush. "I'm trying to save myself some heartbreak when you realize that this probably won't work."
"Says who?" He said. "And why?"
"Because I'm your lieutenant's daughter, and I'm seventeen," she shrugged. "And I don't know, probably many other reasons so take your pick."
"No, I don't care about that," he shook his head. "Look, I need to get out of here, so if you meant what you said and you want to make sure I'm okay, then come with me."
Grace hesitated for a moment before nodding and getting into his car. She knew it wasn't going to go over well with Casey or Severide, but she needed to make sure he wasn't going to do anything else stupid.
"Where is she?" Casey asked Dawson when he went back out to the kitchen.
"She went after him," Dawson said. "What am I missing?"
Casey and Severide headed out of the house in a hurry but Grace and Jimmy were nowhere to be found. "She went with him," Casey said. "I can't go after her. I already left once during shift and if I go to that kid's house, I might hit him."
"I'll go," Severide said as he turned to the squad table. "Come on, we're going for a ride."
Severide wasn't pleased heading over to Jimmy's with the guys. He wanted to talk to him anyway, but Grace being there changed things a little bit. He wanted to make sure she was alright, but he was pretty sure Jimmy didn't make Grace do anything. He knew what he wanted say the moment he jumped out of the truck and knocked on the door.
"Shut up and listen," he said when Jimmy opened the door. "You're hurting one of the greatest men I've ever known."
"The greatest man?" Jimmy scoffed.
"And, you're cheapening your brother's death in the process," he said. "So, let's stop all the nonsense and you go back to being the man I know you can be."
"I'll handle my own affairs, thank you." He said as he went to close the door but Severide stopped him.
"Grace," he called. "Get out here."
"She wants to stay," Jimmy said.
"She doesn't get to make that decision and you sure as hell don't," Severide said. "Grace, do not make me come in there and get you."
"I'm right here," Grace said as she came around the corner and looked at Jimmy with a small smile. "I'll talk to you later."
"That wasn't one of your smarter moves," Severide said once Jimmy closed the door. "What happened to getting some space? And now, everyone at the house knows something is going on, you do realize that right?"
"I like it better when you talk to me as a friend," she said. "You're nicer."
"I'm not your friend, I'm your family," he said. "Now, get in the truck."
Grace headed to the truck, she knew he wasn't really that mad, but she knew Casey would be. She let Cruz pull her up into the truck and tried to ignore their questioning glances. She was surprised he hadn't tried to call her yet, but she knew he trusted Severide. When they pulled into the garage she could see him standing by the door, arms crossed with a heavily furrowed brow.
"My office," he said when she jumped out of the truck and headed towards him. "Now."
Grace resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she headed for his office. She wasn't in the mood for some lecture, or for him to be mad at her. She hated when he was upset with her. She spent so many years dying for affection from her emotionally unavailable parents that a part of her liked how strict Casey could be. But, when she was in trouble, she hated the distance that separated them, even if it was always brief.
"What on earth were you thinking?" Casey said as he closed the door behind him. "I told you to stay in this house and you went after him."
"I didn't want him to do something stupid, or be alone when he was like that," she tried to explain. "I'm sorry, don't be mad."
"I'm not mad, Grace, I'm worried." He said. "You put yourself in such a dangerous situation. His anger was out of control and that's why I told you to stay put, because he could have lashed out at you."
"But he didn't!" She argued. "He was fine with me and I helped him."
"It's not your job to help him, Grace," Casey said firmly. "What happened to taking a break? Why on earth would you run after him?"
"Because it could have been you! Do you not get that?" She said in frustration. "Instead of Danny, it could have been you, and I can't shake it. And, if it was you, and I was acting out like that, I would hope someone would run after me and make sure I was okay."
Casey took a deep breath and sat her down on the bed, sitting beside her. "I understand, but you need to listen to me when it comes to stuff like this," he said. "I'm only trying to protect you, baby. You scared the hell out of me, so promise me that you won't ever do that again."
"Okay, I promise," Grace nodded. "Will you hug me now?"
Casey grinned and pulled her into his embrace. "I love you, baby girl." He said as he kissed her head. "I'm not going anywhere, I promise you that."
"I love you too, Dad."
