Chapter 26
Today was Saturday and they were hosting mother's day in Sam's new house. Everyone from the SRU was invited with their families. Two teams were working today so they were going to stop by before their shift and then go to work. Their families were welcome to stay and enjoy the barbeque. The weather was nice allowing the kids to play outside as well as in the game room in the basement.
"This house is the coolest house ever." Clark said while walking with Matthew and some of the other boys.
"They are in heaven." Sophie said and the girls nodded.
"Apparently the kids are not the only ones." Shelby said looking at Wordy and Ed enjoying the big grill that Sam had in the backyard.
"Actually, I think they are enjoying it more than the kids." Jules said and they all laughed.
"Hey Jules, where is Leah?" Sophie asked.
"She had an emergency with her family in Haiti and she had to go."
"I am sorry to hear. I hope it's nothing serious." Sophie said and Shelby agreed.
"Me too. Hey guys, this is Rose, Sam's babysitter." Jules said introducing them.
"Nice to meet you all. I heard so much about you." Rose said.
"Nice to meet you too. Come have a beer, you're not working today." Shelby said passing her one.
"So, how do you like working for Sam?" Sophie asked.
"He's amazing and the kids are great." Rose said and blushed. Shelby and Sophie noticed her expression and looked at Jules. They realized that she was aware of it.
"Yeah, they are amazing." Jules said.
"Hey beautiful ladies." Natalie said approaching them with Kristin in her arms.
"I will take her." Rose said reaching for Kristin.
"No, Ju." Kristin said and throwing herself at Jules. Everybody noticed Rose's hurt look.
"Hi baby girl." Jules said and kissed her neck making Kristin squealed and giggled.
"Me too." She said and gave Jules a sloppy kiss on the nose and everyone laughed. "Daddy!" She squealed loudly making Jules winced.
"Hello ladies. I need to borrow my sweetheart for a minute." Sam said.
"And who might that be?" Natalie asked and winked while Jules glared at her and Sophie and Shelby laughed.
"Me daddy. Me and Ju." Kristin said making everyone laughed except for Jules and Rose.
"You baby girl." Sam said keeping his eyes on Jules. When he grabbed Kristin and touched her arm, she froze for a minute and only managed to relax once Sam left with Kristin.
"I remember those days." Sophie said dreamily.
"Excuse me." Rose said getting up and heading for another drink.
"She really likes him." Shelby said.
"You have no idea." Natalie said.
"You are not bothered by this?" Sophie asked.
"Honestly I don't even know what I feel any more." Jules said and sighed. She didn't know why she was so confused and sad. She kept thinking things over and over when she knew in her heart that she loved Sam and the kids and she wanted to be with them.
Everyone was having a good time. It was already past 5 in the afternoon and a lot of people had left because they had other commitments. Only team one, their families and some members of team 3 were still there. They were all sitting in a circle talking and laughing while the kids played.
"I want to say something." Wordy said and everyone got quiet. "I want to wish Happy Mother's day to our beautiful ladies here. Without you guys we wouldn't be here. You guys are strong and amazing to be able to carry a person 9 months and then push it out and continue like nothing happened. So bless you all. Happy Mother's day." Wordy said and kissed his wife.
"Thank you." They all said.
"Yeah, I don't know how you guys do it. You guys turn so scary at times and the mood swings." Spike said sitting next to Winnie. His parents had left a while ago and he was happy that he was sitting next to her.
"You have no idea about the mood swings." Ed said jokingly and Sophie slapped him in the arm.
"Hey." She said.
"It's true. One minute they're crying, then they're laughing, then they hate you. It's so confusing, they are even confused themselves." Wordy added.
"Well that is true. On my last pregnancy, I didn't even want to be near Wordy at the beginning of it. I was confused and sad and I couldn't understand what was happening until I realized that I had missed my period and was pregnant again. Once I found out it was easier." Shelby said and nobody noticed how Jules froze. It took everything in her to stay calm and not freak out. She wanted to run out the backyard and go hide under her covers. For the first time in weeks she understood what was really going on with her. She was about to excuse herself when all the kids demanded their attention.
"What is going on?" Ed asked looking at his son and the younger kids.
"We did mother's day cards." Matthew said proudly and the ladies sighed in delight. Then the kids started giving their mother's day cards. Clark gave one to Sophie, Wordy's girls made a big one together for Shelby and Sam kids made one big and one small one. Everyone was staring at them waiting to see who they would give it too. They were facing Sam and he was in the middle between Rose and Jules. The kids look at all three of them and then Matthew started talking.
"This is one is for our real mum. We know she is in heaven but no matter what we will never forget her. So we did one for her." Matthew said and all the ladies' eyes filled with tears.
"She would have loved it." Sam said and held the card for everyone to see what they wrote inside. It said 'I love you' and their names.
"And the other one?" Sam asked. They smiled and turned to Jules. She froze for a second before her heart swelled with love for the three beautiful kids standing in front of her.
"We know you are not our real mom but our teacher said that a mother is someone who cares and loves us and is there for us no matter what. Someone that will kiss us goodnight and makes us breakfast and play with us and always makes us feel safe. You make us feel safe and we love you too." Matthew said. Jules sat motionless in her seat with tears were running down her face while everyone stared at her.
"You promised that you would love us forever and you kiss daddy all the time." Alyssa said and Kristin yelled kiss and made kissing sounds.
"Jules." Sam said and touched her arm slightly.
"Thank you so much guys." Jules said through her tears and hugged all three kids. When she was done hugging them, she excused herself and ran to the house while Sam followed her.
"Did we do something wrong?" Matthew asked.
"No honey, you guys did the right thing. You guys are the best nieces and nephew in the entire world." Natalie said and she and Joshua grabbed them making them laugh. Then Clark took the kids and they went back to play
"That was so cute." Shelby said.
"And a problem." Ed said.
"Why?" Sophie asked confused.
"Because they love each other and they won't be together because of the job. Unfortunately, now they're just not hurting each other but the kids too." Spike said as team one and three nodded.
"But that is not fair. They should be together." Natalie said.
"Hey, we all want them to be together but we have rules. However the rules are not the only thing keeping them apart, they are the ones that need to be together." Wordy said.
"They will be alright." Joshua said and continued talking and laughing about other things.
Inside the house
"Jules, where are you going?" Sam asked.
"I have to go." Jules said.
"No, you don't Jules. Please stay, you can't leave now."
"Sam, I can't do this."
"Do what?"
"You know what? Be their mother. Jump into your perfect family."
"Jules that is not fair, you know my family is not perfect."
"I know, I am sorry. It's just too much. Three kids Sam."
"I know Jules; I am not putting any pressure on you. I understand. The kids just love you and they are showing you how they feel."
"I love them. I love those kids so much it scares me. I'm so scared I want to run away. I don't know anything about being a mother. I don't know anything about small children or what they need. I don't know anything about having a family. How can I do this Sam? But worse of all is that I don't know how I can back away from this now. From them." Jules said crying and sat down on the sofa.
"Jules, it will be alright. Parenting is hard. I don't know what I am doing half of the time but each day I bless god for guiding me. All I think about, is that I need to make sure that they are safe and happy and when I see that I know that I am doing something right. You do that for them. They know you are not their biological mom but they know the difference between you and Rose. They know that at the end of the day Rose leaves and you stay. Because that is what mothers do? You are their mother in their eyes and I know it is too much, but don't run away from us. Let's be scared together and I promise you that things will get better each day." Sam said and sat next to her and pulled her to his lap while she cried against his chest.
"Sam, I think I am pregnant." Jules said when she calmed down a little. She felt Sam stiffen and she froze.
