Brace yourself.
RPOV
"I was trying to get her to phase."
Eight little words, and everything went to hell.
Jake roared at Leah, wrapping his hand around her throat.
Paul broke away from me to get to his threatened mate.
Emmett roared out, letting Bella go.
Bella ran toward Paul, who was drawing back to punch Jacob.
And I just stood back and enjoyed the show.
Just as Paul's fist connected with Jake's face, Bella rammed into his side, wrapping her arms around his torso, and tackling him to the ground. Jake dropped Leah, who immediately ran to Paul and Bella, in an effort to protect her mate, and Jake did the same. As soon as they each had their respective mates, mine let out a roar that would have made a normal mortal piss their pants. Everyone froze.
"WHAT DID YOU DO?" He leveled at Jake. I cringed as I realized exactly what had happened, and what it meant. I knew Emmett had already figured it out, but I also knew that this would be hard for him to accept.
He really did see Bella as a daughter or sister figure. Even though he had never been able have a relationship with her the way he would have liked to, he was still extremely protective of her. So becoming one of them was just as offensive as her becoming one of us. I personally didn't think it was as bad, she could still have a somewhat normal life as one of them, well normal in comparison to us, just with some extra strength, and a longer life span.
I saw Jake waver for just a second, but then he straightened, pushing Bella behind him as he faced an uncharacteristically scary Emmett.
"What are you talking about?" He snapped back.
"You know exactly what I'm talking about, now tell me, what you did to her?" Emmett grounded out angrily.
"You better back the fuck up right now, I don't care if you're her family or not, I will tear you apart." Jake growled in his face.
"What is going on?" Sam yelled out, running from the treeline, followed closely by several others I was vaguely familiar with.
"It's Bella." Jake offered up, keeping his eyes glued to Emmett. "He can tell there's a difference in her." Emmett snarled loudly when he answered, but Jake didn't even flinch.
"Don't worry," I said softly, leaning over to Bella. "He would never hurt Jake." I said, nodding toward Emmett.
"Don't bet on it." Emmett answered through clenched teeth, still staring down Jake. I just rolled my eyes, knowing that he may be mad enough to fight, but I highly doubted he could hurt someone that meant so much to Bella.
"What are you talking about?" Bella yelled, pushing past Jake and I. "I haven't changed! What are the two of you talking about?"
Jake took a visible breath.
"You can smell them." He said simply. She looked at him like he was talking another language. "That smell you smelled in there? That rotten smell, that's them."
"And why is it she can smell us now?" Emmett seethed in his face. Jake narrowed his eyes and clenched his jaw. I could tell his calm was quickly running out as he clenched his fists at his side.
"I bit her."
Emmett let out a lion's roar and shoved Jake with both hands, sending him flying backwards into the woods. I watched through the trees as he phased before he hit the ground, and he came barreling back out towards us.
"Stop!" Bella screamed out, running to block Jake, and he stopped immediately in front of her.
"Now for just one minute, I'm gonna need you two please play nice, and someone please explain to me what in God's name is going on here!"
"May I?" I spoke up, and Bella nodded in my direction. "From what I can gather between what the two neanderthals have said, and your behavior, it seems that, if Jake indeed did bite you, then it's done something to make you more like them."
"Fine! Now-, wait, what?" She said, doing a double take toward me.
"She's right." Sam said, stepping forward. "We've been trying to figure it out, and we can't be sure, but based on your healing and your strength, and now your sense of smell, it seems you are changing, but not in any way that the rest of us have. It was instantaneous for the rest of us, we changed to a wolf and everything else came with it. But yours has been gradual, and there's no sign of the wolf, but the other signs that you are exhibiting are specific only to the wolves."
"So, what are you saying? I'm eventually going to be a wolf? That's crazy! I'm white, I'm not indian!"
"Actually, that's not true." I said. Emmett turned to glare at me, but I glared right back, knowing he couldn't shut me up. "Based on Emmett's lineage, you're actually part Cherokee. Nearly all native americans have legends of shape shifters in their culture, so while it may not specifically be Quileute genes, you do have something similar in your DNA, which would allow you to have 'symptoms' similar to that of one of these shifters."
"Can it hurt her?" Emmett asked.
"No more than it's hurt the rest of us." Sam interceded. "Even if she goes full wolf, I don't see how it could be any worse for her than it has been on us."
Both wolf-Jake and Emmett turned on him, Jake snarling and Em yelling.
"Are you kidding me? What are you trying to say? That this is normal?"
"I'm only telling you what we can only assume. This is completely unprecedented!" He bellowed back, looking between Jake and Emmett.
Before anyone could say another word, Jake jerked his head to face the treeline and snarled, and seconds later a dozen different howls came from the direction of the reservation. Jake pushed Bella to me with his snout, then took off through the treeline, followed directly by a phased Paul.
"Keep her with you, don't let her out of your sight, and get to the rez as fast as possible." Leah instructed. I nodded, noting the determination in her eyes.
They were gone in an instant, and I was just turning to Bella, when I caught a familiar smell. I jerked her behind me, Emmett snarling beside me, facing the treeline, and we watched as Edward sauntered out calmly.
"Well this couldn't have worked out more perfectly." He said smugly.
I felt Bella tense and grip me tightly from behind. Emmett growled out beside me, as my mind spun, trying to figure out the best way to get her out of this situation.
"Oh, Rose, I wouldn't bother. You can't." He said, cocking his head to the side, a sick smile appearing on his face. "You see, you are completely surrounded." And sure enough, I saw multiple vampires materializing out of the treeline, most of which held no scent.
"That's right." He continued, answering my thoughts. "I found a….loophole. So I've been able to keep a closer eye on my pet, but now I feel it's time to collect what's rightfully mine."
Emmett and I crouched down, keeping Bella between us. I knew we were severely outnumbered. We were good fighters, but we couldn't very well fight and keep her away from Edward. All I could hope was that Jacob could feel her fear and get back to us soon.
"Interesting." Edward said softly, narrowing his eyes.
Damn it.
"Looks like we'll have to-"
The howls of the wolves interrupted him, and they were getting close fast. Suddenly Edward's army advanced on us.
"Grab on!" I yelled to Bella, and as soon as she had a grip, I jumped clear of the two running at me. I hated to do it, but I had to leave Emmett. I knew he would be ok since the wolves were coming, but I had to get Bella out of there. I had to get her to Jacob.
Several of the others jumped after me, and followed me closely as I jumped from tree to tree. I landed on one tree and immediately went to jump to the next, when I felt Bella being pulled from behind. I whipped around and heard her scream, and immediately smelled her blood. I knocked the vamp off and took off again. I brought her around to my front as I ran, and felt the deep gouges down her back where her shirt had been shredded. She was bleeding, but it seemed to already be tapering off.
I never thought I'd be grateful for wolf genes.
I heard the wolves stampeding through the forest to us about the time I got to the ground. I thought I was in the clear, and could just start to make out their forms through the trees, when I was blindsided by two more, and thrown about thirty feet. I tried to hold onto Bella, but as soon as I hit a tree, I lost my grip and she fell.
As soon as she hit the ground though, she was up and running, though not as fast as she could have if she hadn't been injured. I took off after her to make sure she got to the wolves, but was tackled by three at once.
"Get her James!" A redhead said, looking ahead to where Bella was running, and before I could warn her, Bella was blocked by a skeezy looking blond.
"Well, look what I found." He said slowly, a sneer coming up on his face. "I bet I could have a lot of fun with-"
Before he could finish, he was in the jaws of Jacob's wolf, being torn apart like a dog destroying a newspaper.
"NO!" The redhead holding me shrieked, taking off toward them, but I grabbed her hair, and threw her hard behind me, causing her to fly back through the trees. I smelled Edward getting close, so I shot up toward Bella.
But that's not who Edward was aiming for.
I got to Bella just as I heard the crunch of bones and a yelp come from Jacob. He had been so concentrated on killing the immediate threat to Bella, Jake hadn't even seen him coming.
Bella screamed out Jacob's name and struggled against me to get to him. Jacob laid on the ground, breathing heavy, and struggled to get up, but I knew he was badly injured. Bella's breaths came shorter, mirroring Jacob's, as Edward placed a foot over the wolf's throat.
"Now here's what's going to happen." He said calmly, looking at Bella. "You come with me, and I leave your mutt here, alive and breathing, or I kill him right now, as well as your little auntie and uncle there, and end up taking you anyway. Either way, you're leaving with me. It's up to you whether you leave them dead or alive."
Bella whimpered in my arms, leaning her entire body weight into me. Jacob looked up at her, I could tell he was trying to tell her no, but I knew what her ultimate decision would be. So did Edward.
"Please…" Her voice was weak and broken. "I'll go, just please leave him alone."
"Bella, no!" I pulled her against me. "Bella, listen to me, you can't do this. You can't go with him."
"Rose, please." She whispered, her voice was desperate. "Please let me go."
"No Bella, I can't." I said firmly. "Besides, do you really think he's going to keep his word?"
Edward laughed cynically, earning a small growl from Jacob, and causing me to grip Bella tighter.
"Rosalie, you wound me!" He said exaggeratedly, his hand over his chest. "In the 94 years we've spent together, when have I ever broke my word?"
"Sorry, but when you turn into a crazed psychopath, all bets are off." I spat back at him. His smile turned into a snarl, and he stepped back, stomping on one of Jacob's legs, drawing another pained yelp from the wolf.
"Stop! Please! I'll go with you, just please leave him alone!" Bella cried out. Jake huffed and whimpered, obviously distressed at the situation. I knew I couldn't let her go, but I also knew I couldn't let Jacob die. Bella turned to face me, begging me with her eyes to let her go. The second I did, she was gone. Ripped away from me without another word.
I vaguely felt the wind of the remaining vampires as they quickly followed, but I was too numb to truly notice, and fell to my knees. At some point, Jacob phased back and was screaming out, but it wasn't until Emmett made his way to me that I realized he was screaming at me.
"WHY DID YOU LET HER GO? YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO PROTECT HER! YOU JUST LET HIM TAKE HER!"
I looked up at him, his mouth was covered in blood where he was coughing it up, his right leg and arm was mangled, and he had severe bruising around his ribs. I couldn't answer him though. He was right. I shouldn't have let her go.
"Rosalie!" Emmett said shaking me. "Hey! Talk to me! What happened?"
I tried to answer, but I couldn't get the words out.
"She didn't have a choice." Leah said softly, kneeling down beside me. I looked over at her, and she looked between Emmett and me with sad eyes. "I saw it, I saw everything that happened, she didn't have a choice. He was going to kill Jacob, and that would have killed Bella. The best thing to do was let her go-"
Jacob interrupted her with a garbled yell, but Sam, Paul, and Jared shut him up as they gently picked him up. Emmett was silent and staring at the ground, still trying to comprehend everything. I felt Leah gently tug on my arm and I stood with her.
"We'll find her." She said simply, before following the rest of the pack back toward the reservation.
"Emmett, I'm so sorry." I said softly as he stood. He pulled me into a fierce hug.
"It's not your fault. She's right. You didn't have a choice, and we will find her. Now come on, we got some bodies to burn."
