Castiel went back to the green room and let out a breath of relief when Zachariah was nowhere to be seen. Nevertheless, he had to act fast. Zachariah might not be here physically, but he was still keeping a close eye on the room, on Dean Winchester.

He had to make sure to get the human away from Zachariah and the other angels, before…

Dean. Where was he?

Castiel paced around the room and came to find Dean Winchester on the floor. Dean was curled up in a corner, his face hidden from view.

"Dean," Castiel called.

"Cas?" Dean raised his head and squinted up at Castiel. He was pale, shaking, and his lips were coated with blood.

Damn it, Zachariah.

"No," Dean stared fiercely at Castiel before his face broke into a grimace and he turned away.

Castiel frowned.

What was Dean saying no to?

"The answer is still no!" Dean spat, "Just kill me."

Castiel reached out to him with the intent of undoing whatever it was that his superior did, but Dean shrunk away from him.

"I'm here to help," Castiel assured quietly before he went on to heal the human.

There was a beat before Dean started to uncurl himself.

Dean stood up with uncertainty, "Cas? Wha…"

Castiel clapped his hand over Dean's mouth and gestured for him to be silent. He only removed his hand when Dean nodded.

With his blade, Castiel drew blood on his forearm and used it to paint the banishing sigil on the wall. He would need to make sure that Zachariah would not be right on their tails when he escapes with Dean. Of course, Zachariah would still be able to track them down, but this would buy them a little time.

"Castiel!" Zachariah's voice boomed in the room, "What do you think you are doing?"

One last stroke.

Blinding, white light erupted in the room and Zachariah was gone.

"We must hurry, he won't be gone for long," Castiel pulled Dean along as he returned to Ilchester.

"Cas! What the hell! Give a man some warning, would you," Dean looked around, "Where are we?"

Sam groaned as he came to. His muscles ached fiercely, and the hard surface which he was lying on was not helping matters any. They went to the motel where Adam was at, and then…Ruby!

He opened his eyes and yelped when all he saw was a pair of blue eyes peering down at him.

"What…Castiel! Personal space?" Sam pushed himself up from the floor and stretched his stiff muscles.

Being tasered was no fun.

"You okay?"

Sam turned and was greeted with the sight of Dean beside him, and his mother sitting at a table behind Dean.

"Dean!" Sam exclaimed in relief.

"C'mon, we've got work to do," Dean helped Sam up from the floor.

"Gah!" Sam winced when his muscles protested.

"Alright c'mon Cas, we have to hurry."

Cas had transported them to the outside the convent.

"Demons?" Mary observed as the four of them hid in the shadows.

There were at least five demons where she could see. Who knew how many more of them were there?

"Go. Go on, I'll take care of the demons," Castiel gave them a push.

This was their last chance to save the world from the apocalypse.

With Mary in the lead, the three of them sneaked into the building while Cas methodically dealt with the demons in the yard.

"Adam! Don't!" Sam barked.

They got into the convent just in time to see Lilith being thrown against the granite altar by the force of Adam's powers. Ruby was the only one who noticed their arrival. She slammed the doors to the chamber.

"God damn bitch!" Dean yelled as he pounded on the heavy doors.

Lilith's shriek rang in their ears and wind started to pick up in the enclosed hallway.

"Adam! Listen to me! You can't kill Lilith! She is the final seal!" Sam hoped that Adam could hear him.

Everything fell silent after Sam's speech. The three of them looked at one another in anticipation.

Had Adam heard Sam? Or had he killed Lilith?

"Adam?"

Sam felt the locked doors give, and pushed them open.

It was now or never.

Part of his mind registered the slamming of the doors behind him, but nothing could take his concentration off the demon in front of him. The demon he had been trying to find and kill for the past few months.

Lilith sneered, "The sounds that your mother made when I tore her throat out? All that gurgling and sputtering...Calling out for her precious Adam…"

"Shut up, you bitch!" Adam reached out to her with his powers and proceeded to choke the life out of her.

"Adam!"

Was that Sam?

Light flashed from within the bitch, flickered once, twice, and then it was gone. The lifeless body slumped sideways onto the ground when Adam released his hold on her.

Lilith was dead.

He did it!

Adam felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He did it. He killed Lilith. He avenged his mother.

"Oh god, Adam," Mary gasped from behind Adam.

He swivelled around to see the Winchesters gaping at him and the fallen demon at his feet.

"You did it! I knew you had it in you," Ruby touched his arm softly as she traced the floor with her eyes.

Following her gaze, he spotted Lilith's blood, which was flowing to form some kind of symbol on the ground.

"What is happening?" Adam frowned. Blood was not supposed to move like that.

"You broke the final seal," Sam whispered.

"You opened the door. And now he's free at last!" Ruby laughed.

Oh my god.

Ruby continued, "You don't even know how hard this was! All the demons were out for my head. No one knew. I was the best of those sons of bitches! The most loyal! Not even Alastair knew! Only Lilith! I'm sure you're a little angry right now, but c'mon! Even you have to admit, I'm awesome!"

Adam could only stare on, dumbfounded. What had he done?

Sam moved to restrain Ruby against himself while Dean sank the demon-killing blade into her abdomen.

"We gotta go! We gotta go, now!" Mary yelled over the ascending ringing in the convent.

Adam was blinded by the brilliant white which filled the room, but he felt someone pulling him along towards the exit.

Had he really jump-started the apocalypse?

"You okay?" It was Dean that had been pulling him along, "C'mon, let's go."

"Yeah," Adam could only nod.

He let Lucifer free. He brought Hell upon Earth. He was going to be the cause of the suffering of millions…

Dean tugged at his half-brother, willing him to move faster.

"C'mon, let's go," he ordered.

"Yeah."

Dean looked at Adam. He knew what it felt like exactly, to fail, and to be responsible for ending the world. Hell, this was partly his fault too.

He just hoped that they could all get out of this place, and then Cas could zap them to safety before the big boss showed.

Adam's hand slipped from his and the next thing he knew, the door was closed shut behind him.

"No! No!" Dean's outburst stopped Sam and Mary, who were ahead of him, in their tracks.

Adam was still trapped in the room where Lucifer was rising from.

"Dean! What happened?"

"Adam!" Not only did he help the demons start the apocalypse, he could not even save his half-brother.

The white light was seeping through the cracks in the door, and the parts of the ceiling started raining down on them.

"We can't just leave him in there!" Dean snapped when Sam nudged him to get a move on.

Why was it that he couldn't do anything right?

"The convent's coming down on us, we have to go!" Mary was shielding her head with her hands.

As suddenly as it started, the commotion stopped. The last of the pieces of the convent fell onto the dusty ground and then there was nothing. No ringing, no white light, nothing.

"What…"

Dean gave the doors a mighty push, revealing an empty, dark chamber.

No Lilith, no Lucifer, and no Adam.

"Do you think he's okay?" Sam asked.

"Doubt it."
