She removes her hand and I try to force everything back up, but it's no use. I can feel myself slipping away. How could she do this; she promised me not to go. Before I fall into complete darkness, I hear her say something, but I don't know what it is.

"Who can't lie, Peeta?" I say as his eyes slowly close.

Wherever Haymitch is, I know that he is howling with laughter. The sleep syrup will keep Peeta knocked out for a day. All I have to do is go to the feast, grab the bag, and run back. Simple.

All I can do now is wait. I try not to drift, but I do. Fortunately, I manage to wake before the feast. Even if this is the last time I'm going to see him, I want to know he has some form of protection. I need my bow, but the knife is something he could use.

Saying my goodbyes to him, I kiss his now-chapped lips and leave. All of my senses are on high alert as I make my way to the Cornucopia field. My heart sinks because there are no bags– did I go to the wrong place? No, Claudius specifically said that it would be at the Cornucopia.

Just as I'm turning, I hear clinking and screeching metal. On the ground, at the mouth of the Cornucopia, a table is rising with four bags on it. District Twelve has the smallest bag and I know that it really is the medicine.

I'm about to run to the Cornucopia when I see Foxface dart out of the golden structure. In a flash, she grabs her bag and runs to the woods unharmed. I curse at myself for not thinking of the ingenious idea. That doesn't matter now though. I need to act fast.

Hauling ass, I race to the Cornucopia and snatch up District Twelve's bag. I'm halfway across the field when a knife flies by me, missing my ear by centimetres. I wheel around and shoot an arrow at the person who I knew was Clove. She's the only one left that could wield a knife with such precision.

Clove tries to jump away from the arrow, but it hits her, nicking her left arm. She lets out a yelp and throws another knife before I can release my next arrow. I feel the blade dance across my forehead. The pain was bearable, but the gush of blood made me aware that it was pretty bad. In no time at all I find myself on tumbling to the ground with Clove on top of me and a knife at my throat.

All I can think of is that I've failed Peeta and everyone else. I broke my promise to Prim; to Rue; to Peeta.

"Where's Lover Boy?" Clove asks as I struggle against her weight. "How's his leg doing? Is he still hanging on?"

"Fuck you!" I hiss through my teeth. I can taste the blood that is dripping down my face, in my mouth.

"So, where is he, Girl on Fire?" she says with a wide grin.

"He's out there right now! He's hunting Cato!" I growl and scream, "Peeta! Peeta!"

Clove puts her forearm over my mouth and looks around for Peeta. It doesn't take her long to realize that I lied. When she does, she punches me in the gut, knocking the wind out of me.

"You little liar. Cato cut his leg open perfectly. Lover boy is nearly dead, isn't he? Now, we're going to kill you. We're going to kill you just like we killed your little friend. What was her name? Rue? She was a pathetic little thing and we killed her happily. She wasn't going to last anyways," the psychotic bitch says with a laugh.

"Fuck you, you crazy bitch! You're fucking sick!" I spit in her face.

Clove pulls the knife from my neck and raising it. This is it. I'm going to die. There's no chance anymore. Squeezing my eyes shut I wait for the knife to dig into my body. The pain never arrives. I peak my eyes open to see Thresh slamming Clove against the Cornucopia, holding her by her neck.

"Did you kill her?" he yells at Clove.

"No! No! Cato!" she screams. "Cato! Ca-"

Her screams are cut short when Thresh smashes a rock into her temple with a sickening crunch. Cato's voice, yelling Clove's name, can be heard far away. It's pointless, though. She's gone. Not a second later, the cannon goes off and Thresh walks over to me. He's going to kill me too.

"Did you really become her friend or ally or whatever?" he asks. I nod.

"I-I stayed with her until she died. I-I sang to her until she left. I-I couldn't leave h-her." I stutter. Cato is now in sight.

"Just this time, Twelve! For Rue!" he says grabbing his and Clove's bags. He nods his head to me once and runs. I jump to my feet just as Cato reaches Clove and fly into the woods as fast as I can, before I race to the cave.

I have no idea how long it's been since I left, but I'm currently in a race against time. Before I enter the cave, I wipe as much blood as I can off of my face. Inside, Peeta's awake. My blood runs cold when I see him. He's dying.

Drenched in sweat, ghostly pale, and struggling to keep his eyes open– I know I'm losing him. The red streaks that were once confined only to his legs are now all over his body. His breathing is ragged.

"Katniss?" Peeta says in a hoarse and quiet voice that snaps me out of my thoughts. I run over to him, whip out the syringe, push the needle into his arm, and slam my thumb down onto the plunger.

"Peeta? Peeta, stay awake. Please, stay awake," I say, trying to choke back my sobs.

"Katniss, I'm sorry that I can't go home with you. I'm so sorry, Katniss. You'll be okay. You will be able to let go and move on," he says through his shallow breaths.

"No! No! Peeta, you can't leave. No, stay with me!" I beg. "You promised! You promised!"

Tears begin to stream down his face and he whispers, "Don't leave me– please, don't leave me to go alone."

Peeta's eyes flutter shut and his chest falls one last time. Peeta Mellark, the boy with the bread, the one who saved me… is gone.
