Z is for zzz
It was a late December night, and the Cullen household was, well...wide awake.
"Jazz?" Alice whispers into the darkness, her voice soft and smooth.
"Yes?" Jasper answers, turning and facing his darling wife, breathing in the cold air.
"I can't sleep!" Alice whines, her voice wavering and weak. Jasper sighs but closes his book. What Alice expected him to do to help her when she "couldn't sleep" was beyond his immediate knowledge, but he still thought hard.
"Way to state the obvious, my lovely. What do you want me to do, to help you when you "can't sleep"?" Jasper hides his laughter with complete and utter seriousness, but Alice falls into fits of giggles.
"I'm tired."
"You can't b-"
"Let me finish my sentences, Jazzy!" Alice frowns, her smooth forehead wrinkling. "I'm tired of not being able to sleep."
"You're punny." Jasper smiles. Then he touches her arm, "What do you wanna do? We don't have to sit here."
"Mm." Alice mentally flicks through her options. "Let's go outside," the little girl grins, and grabs her coat simply for fashionable purposes. "Can we-"
"We can do anything you'd like, darlin. Well, within reason."
So, at three AM in the morning, Alice and Jasper were twirling their way through the forest. "I was out here one day, hunting...and," Alice says, ducking to narrowly miss hitting her head on a tree trunk, "I thought it would be cool to climb it. There was such a cute little tree house in it! I watched for a couple days...but no one showed up."
Jasper nods, listening to his Alice intently. "I thought it was really sad, because this tree house was so dainty and quaint, so strange nowadays!" Alice tugs his hand a little impatiently, and he picks up speed. "So I went in it and it was huge! I do wonder who built it. Maybe a little girl's father, doing his best? Maybe two little boys, two girls? Who knows? I just love it."
"Uh huh..." Jasper says, running his hand along the wood of the tree. He grabs Alice's waist and jumps up to the tree house. Alice giggles and shakes her head.
"You made me lose my thought."
"If only Edward were here."
"If Edward were here, he'd never let his little sister kiss you like this." Alice announces, one eyebrow cocked jauntily. She grabs his neck and pulls him forward.
"Alic-" Jasper protests, but he then leans into the kiss, laughing deeply.
"Oh, you know you like it, Jazz. Don't be a prude."
"It's called a gentleman," Jasper corrects, kissing her nose playfully.
"Whatever. Come look inside," Alice says, for they were perched precariously on the edge of a branch, and while this held no danger for them, it wasn't the most comfortable of seats.
Jasper stood in the reasonably sized doorway, speechless. The little room had robbed him of any words, and he just shook his head.
"I...I wanted to leave it as I found it, but I couldn't help adding touches to it." Looking around, he took in the old fashioned room. He saw the yellowed curtains, and the sweet window shutters, but he also saw Alice's little touches.
A rug, hot pink, along with a matching chair, and post its pinned to the walls. From him, to her...to him, from her..from Alice to herself, love letters, notes, poems that she'd written...
Darling you're my one and only, my sweetheart, my true love.
You're coming off a little shy
Everything and everyone, my love, you're above
But I knew you loved me when you looked me in the eye
Perhaps I shouldn't say this
Maybe I'm a jinx
But with you, I'm in utter bliss
And loving you makes me not miss my forty winks
I've fallen so in love with you Jazz
I have no regrets in what I'm saying
I love you with all my heart whereas
It's your head that you're obeying
"Alice, that's beautiful." Alice looks round and smiles at Jasper.
"Oh, that old thing. Look at it! It's in tatters. Really, I should print it out to save it." She sighs, "Still, never mind. It's only a silly poem I wrote when I first met you in that diner."
"No, Alice. It's so much more than that. It's amazing. Just like you." Offering him nothing more than a wiry, wan smile, Alice touches the other older post it.
"No, Jasper. I'm not amazing."
"Yes, you are." Alice sighs once again, and bites her pouty lip, shaking her head again. Jasper gently takes her face in his hands. "You're utterly amazing to me. Utterly amazing, gorgeously beautiful, my princess." Alice gives him a proper smile this time, and he smiles, looking down at his shoes.
Eventually, they get back to bed. Esme is waiting at the door, and smiles as they walk in, hand in hand, colder than ever thanks to the weather.
"Just wanted to make sure you got back alright. I'll be in bed if you want me."
"Thanks, Esme," Jasper says softly, kissing her cheek. Alice does the same.
"Let's go there, whenever we "can't sleep"," Alice giggles. Jasper takes her hands in his and smiles.
"Sounds like a plan."
And so every night, the two pale faced vampires crept into the forest, and into their tree. Alice realized then, that she was so lucky, not being able to sleep. She could spend every minute of the day with those whom she loved.
Who needs sleep, anyways?
And for one, final time, please review...
