Chapter 26

Saturday, Jack woke up early. So did Jo. Bobby was still sleeping when they tiptoed past his room and it didn't appear that Angel had even bothered to come home last night. Evelyn smiled when she saw them up and dressed. She had been making breakfast in the kitchen and welcomed the company of her two youngest.

"Plans for today?" Evelyn asked making conversation while Jack and Jo helped her prepare breakfast.

Jack shrugged. "We were planning on hanging out at the park for a while this morning. Just to go for a walk."

Evelyn smiled. "It is a nice day." She looked over at Jo who was placing strips of bacon onto a pan. "How are you feeling today dear?

Jo shrugged nonchalantly before looking up and forcing a small smile. "Fine," she managed. "Just need a change of scenery I guess."

Evelyn stared at the girl for a moment longer. Their morning excursion no doubt Jack's idea. The two of them seemed to pulling away a lot more lately and she hoped maybe some fresh air and getting out of the house for a few hours doing something that was not errand related would help.

With the exception of Jack getting into "fight" with some boys in the neighborhood, she had thought they had been making some progress lately. Jo no longer stayed out late past curfew, not that she really had much of a chance too lately. And Jack hadn't come home drunk or high once in the past week.

She released a light sigh as she turned on the coffee pot and turned on the oven as Jo placed the strips of meat into it.

Fortunately, breakfast wasn't nearly as bad as dinner the night before. Jo barely spoke but the girl did crack a few smiles as Jack and Evelyn talked about one of the bands at the new school. And whether or not Jack should consider trying out. There was supposed to be a dance scheduled at the weekend of their first week at the school. Evelyn had noticed a flyer up when they had went to register for their classes.

"Jackie, you will use any excuse to wear make-up," Bobby yawned from the doorway of the kitchen interjecting himself into the conversation as Jack and Jo prepared to leave.

"Don't be jealous Bobby," Jack smirked in a better mood after breakfast. "Ballerina's where make up too."

Bobby growled at his brother and made a feint action of pretending to lunge at him.

Jo laughed as she grabbed her jacket and slipped on her shoes. Evelyn smiled. It was the first time she could remember hearing the girl laugh in a while.

"We're headed to the park, ma." Jack called out as he made it to the front door. He didn't bother grabbing his jacket because it was relatively warm out, but he didn't comment on Jo for taking hers.

"Be safe." Evelyn told them. "I have a few errands to run, so if I'm not here when you get back…"

"Alright," Jack said following Jo out the door.

Bobby turned to his mother as they watched Jack and Jo head up the street to the park that was a few blocks away.

"You sure that was such a good idea, ma?" Bobby asked. Slightly concerned.

Evelyn turn to her eldest son. "What do you mean?" she asked pouring him a cup of coffee before refilling her own. "You mean because Jack got into a fight with a few of the boys in the neighborhood?"

Bobby took a sip of his coffee and frowned. "Yeah, about that…"

At the park Jack pushed Jo on the swings while they talked. Jo seemed to be in a better mood and Jack was grateful for that. They were still talking about the prospect of Jack joining a band at their new school and what they thought their new school might be like when Jack noticed a silver car pulling up to the park.

Jack had an uneasy feeling from the moment he spotted the car, but the second he saw David, his stomach dropped.

David spotted the kids on the swing and waved over to them trying his best to get their attention as he approached.

Jack grabbed the metal chains on the sides of the swing halting it as Jo continued to pump her legs. He grabbed the girl by the hand and pulled her up.

"We should go," Jack said as David approached.

Jo stood still yanking at her hand as Jack continued to walk. "Jackie," Jo protested. "We're going to have to face him sooner or later."

Jack looked at his sister and frowned. "How about later."

Jo didn't budge from her spot in front of the swings as David approached.

"Hey," David said smiling. "I was in the neighborhood driving by and I thought I saw you two."

"We were just leaving." Jack said coldly.

David frowned. 'Can I at least talk to you for a moment? We could go and get breakfast if you'd like?"

Jack looked at the man with icy blue eyes. "No, and we already ate."

David turned his attention Jo. "Joanna, how are you feeling? We didn't get the chance to talk much at the hospital."

Jack reached for his sister and pulled her behind him as David took a step toward them. Jo didn't protest as he did so.

"We're going to go." Jack told his father.

"Please don't," David said with a small smile. "It's such a nice day." He laughed. "You know, I like coming to the park too. It's been a while, but I enjoy it, especially on days like today when the weather is nice. It reminds me of when you and Jo were younger and your mother and I would bring you two to play."

Jack flinched slightly at the memory. "That's not why you took us to the park." Jack growled in a low tone. "We were there. I remember and you pretending to be this new person isn't going to work."

"Jack," Jo whispered as her brother grabbed her by the arm, but the blue eyed blond haired teen ignored her. Jack was annoyed and was becoming angry.

"Hey, come on." David called after them. "Jackson don't be like that."

Jack snapped. "And why the hell not!"

Jo turned to look at her older brother as he raised his voice at the older man a few feet away from them.

"You really think I don't remember?" Jack asked. "I wasn't as young as Jo and I don't trust you."

"Jack, please." Jo begged her brother. "What are you talking about?"

Jack turned to David his voice full of anger. "Tell her. Tell her the truth about who you are. Tell her about all the lies from your letters and how every bad thing that's ever happened to us is because of you."

"Fine," David conceded. "I'll tell her. I'll admit exactly what happened, but only if you and Joanna will sit down and talk with me."

Jack shook his head. "No, why should we trust you?"

"Jackson,"

Again Jack refused. "We should probably go back home anyway. We shouldn't even be talking to you."

" You swear to tell the truth?" Jo asked the older man.

"Cross my heart," David smiled down at her.

"Jackie, please." Jo pleaded. "If you won't tell me..."

Jack aquiesced and led Jo to a park bench at a picnic table. He sat down beside her eying David as he took a seat across from them.

'You're brother's right," David began after a moment. "I wasn't a good guy when the two of you were kids." Jo looked at David expactly. "We didn't just come to the park so that you kids could play...We came so that your mom and I could score."

Jo looked confused. "You took us to the park so you could meet your dealer?"

David hesitated, but Jack shot him a look. He cleared his throat. "Yeah, but it was a little more than that. Sometimes your mom and me, we wouldn't have enough money, so I came up with the idea of letting our friends play with you two in exchange for the drugs."

David looked down at the table. Jo still looked confused. "You- You pimped us out for drugs!?"

David reached a hand across the table to comfort the traumatized girl, but Jo pulled away.

"No," Jo said standing up. "Jack was right. You're a terrible person!"

"Joanna, please. Jackson was right about some things, but I have changed." David tried. "I know you two had it rough growing up and that's partially my fault but I'm sorry. I'm trying to make up for it now."

Jo shook her head as silent tears slipped down her cheeks. Jack got up and went after his sister as she started walking away.

"Is there anything else I don't know?" Jo asked turning around abruptly.

Jack looked at his sister and frowned. David looked to the ground for a moment before sighing and nodding his head yes.
