Chapter 26 Tobias's POV

I stare at her dead body which is lying on a cold metal sheet. Her hair used to be tiny strands of sunshine, but now it looks dead. Like her.

I move closer to her, eventually my waist is touching the table. I look down at her and in that moment, I see her chest move down and then up. I smile at myself for pretending to see that. This is my mind playing tricks on me, trying to tell me that there is a sliver of hope she is alive.

I remember the first time we met. Our eyes were locked as I pulled her from the net. She was in Abnegation robes like me when I first transferred. But unlike her, I was not the first jumper, instead I was the fifth or sixth one.

I thought to myself: She looks like she can make it. She seemed too different, yet she could fade away into the crowd like she was like them. After a while, after all the clues that is, I decided to believe that she was Divergent. Of course, I would not tell anyone because I was one at the time.

The memories fill me like bathtub being overfilled with water. We were like two plants growing in the same pot, strangling each other, but as we grew, we supported each other. I guess plants have to die eventually.

I can never thank you enough for being here for me. I promise to take care of Caleb and Christina for you. I will do everything to make you proud. I love you. Not loved, love as in present love right now. I always did.

I kiss her forehead and as I touch her skin, I feel a warmth in her. I hold her hand and that's when I feel it, a liquid rushing within her. The small hope that kindles in me turns into a blazing fire that says she is alive.

Then both of our eyes lock again.
