Chapter 26: Their Betrayal
Earlier that day
Faith sighs and stretches when she wakes up before turning around and looking at her bed companion, wondering if he was dreaming about their betrayal to two people they cared about, while wondering herself how she even got into this in the first place.
As she continued to watch him she thinks back when her life hit that breaking point.
Flashback
Grissom's 79th birthday was a bittersweet time because they wanted to celebrate another birthday for their father, ex-supervisor/co-worker and friend, but there was still sadness creeping around, seeing as they had lost a very important person in the Grissom's life, Sara Grissom.
Grissom didn't want a big deal about his birthday but nobody would hear of it. They wanted to spend as much time with him as possible, seeing as they didn't know when the last time could be, so even though he was still depressed, he made the most out of it.
And the other person who was almost more depressed than her father was Faith, which it wasn't that the other people in Sara's life cared less than her, but it felt like she took the biggest hit from her death. She would always go to her mother for advice or comfort, and now that she was gone, she felt lost. She was closed off to everybody, pushing away their comfort and sympathy, which included her husband and daughter.
And that's why a lot of guests at the party was surprised that she even showed up.
But of course she did, it was her father's birthday after all.
While the guests, like the Sanders family, Stokes family, Brown family, Hart family, and anybody who showed up were mingling, Faith was over by the drink table.
Kevin comes up to her a few seconds later, seeing she had a glass of champagne in her hand, and gives her a little smile. "I hope you are saving some for the other guests?"
She looks at her brother-in law and replies. "Yes, well if I have to hear another condolence speech from them, then I think they don't deserve any."
She took another sip while he raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so you are punishing them?"
Her lips tugged into a small smile with a nod. "Possibly, or I am just making sure they do one less thing they would regret in the morning."
"I see, but what if you were the one that has the regrets in the morning?"
She drained the rest of the glass she had, sets it down on the table before grabbing another and looks at him again. "And what if I don't? Why live with them, you can't do anything to change them."
She hands him the glass before she grabbed another one for herself, then looks at him, waiting for the glasses to clink.
After it happened they both take a sip before she looks back at the guests, then after a few seconds of silence while he continued to look at her, he finally spoke softly. "Faith."
She looks back at him and cuts him off before he could continue, knowing what his next question will be. "Don't make me take that glass away."
He keeps his mouth shut after she stopped speaking, but he really wanted to ask, even though he could tell something was off with her more than just the depression.
But before he could think deeper about it, his thoughts were interrupted when Jeremy and Destiny walked up to them, and Faith speaks before they could. "Let me guess, work?"
As they all heard the bitter tone Jeremy looks at his wife. "Sorry honey, but crime waits for nobody."
She just nods and shrugged her shoulders, making Jeremy sigh while looking at Destiny, which she looks at him with sympathy before she looks at her husband. "You don't have to worry about JJ tonight." Then she looks at her sister and continued. "Or Grace, Eric has decided to do a little sibling bounding before he goes back to college."
He visits and stays at his apartment he is subletting, and with the renter not being there tonight, he wanted to spend the time with his brother and sister there.
Both Faith and Kevin nodded, then Jeremy looked at Faith and asked. "Do you need a ride home?"
Before she replies, Kevin answers. "No, I'll take her home."
After receiving an ok from Faith, both Jeremy and Destiny nodded, then kissed their significant others on their cheeks and left.
They watched them go, then they looked at each other before Kevin spoke. "And you want to know the funny part in that?" She raises an eyebrow as he continued. "That's the most action I had gotten in three weeks." She smirks right after that was said, making her almost spill the champagne out of her mouth.
It also made him smile because it seemed like he just did the impossible, made her smile and let out a small laugh, which made him wonder how long that has happened, so he asked. "And how long has that laugh and smile been missing?"
She lowered her smile back to a sad one and shrugged her shoulders. "Probably months."
He smiled a little more before replying. "It's a shame, because I think you should smile more. You being sad just doesn't work." She gives him a shy smile before looking down at her glass as he takes a sip of his drink, happy that he made her feel something other than sadness, at least for the time being.
When she looked at him again they started talking, which was nothing really serious, but it felt nice to just talk and not about how she was feeling.
While they were talking, smiling and laughing, Grissom had been watching from across the room, making him feel something was brewing, and it was a mixture of a lot of things. He just had a strong feeling that it was going to get worse before it got better, not that it wasn't already worse. But he also knew he couldn't do anything to stop it because it was his girl's lives and he figured they wouldn't be listening to him anyways, so he just mentally sighed and thought out to the universe.'I hope you sure know what you're doing.' then he mentally shook his head and listened to the conversation Greg was talking about, with little success.
After the party was over, and just like he promised, Kevin took her home, and while he didn't drink anymore after two glasses, Faith had more than that. She wasn't totally drunk but it was enough to give her a very bad headache in the morning.
He had pulled in the driveway to the home that she shared with Jeremy, stops the car, turns it off, then spoke while looking at her. "Home sweet home."
She looks out the window for a few seconds before looking at him. "You want to come in?" She places a hand on his arm, telling him what she meant, and making an unexpected spark go though him. He then looked at her hand on his arm before looking at her face, and swallowed.
In the five years that he had been married to Destiny, he had never once thought about being with anybody other than her. But lately he felt something was slipping in their marriage, and while he tried very hard to stay true to her, a part of him was wondering if it was even worth trying anymore, but no matter how he was feeling in this moment, he knew he couldn't do this to either women, they were sisters.
So with that thought, he said a little breathless. "I don't think that would be a good idea."
She runs her hand down his arm to his hand while speaking sarcastically. "Why? Because you don't think you could keep your hands off me?"
As she was taking her hand away, she looked out the window, not really believing she had just said that.
He then stops the hand just before it was removed from his, and whispered. "Yeah." When she took her hand off of his, something snapped in him and realized how alone he had really been feeling.
She turns her head fast and looked at him, surprised that he would say that and probably not really believing him, which he saw the uncertainty, so he gives her a small smile while squeezes her hand lightly. "You are so beautiful, and believe it or not but I had always found you attractive."
She gives him a small smile, and he could even detect a small blush before she looked down and admitted. "It has been awhile since Jeremy told me I'm beautiful. I mean I know he thinks it, but sometimes it would be nice to hear the words."
He uses his free hand to put on her chin and turn her head to look at him, then he cups her cheek as he spoke softly and sincerely. "You are very beautiful Faith."
She gives him another smile, making them both lose count on how many that was tonight, then she leans over to him, kisses him on the cheek, and while his breath hitched a little she whispers in his ear. "Please come in?"
He pulls back to look into her eyes and asks. "You sure?"
She nods, placing her hand on his cheek. "Yes, I am tired of being alone, just for one night."
"One night?"
"Yes, just one night."
He looks into her eyes and nods before leaning forward and kissing her softly before saying. "One night."
She pulls back to look into his eyes and nods her head, both knowing that once they crossed that line there was no going back, but right now they could only think of their loneliness and how they were feeling right now between them.
End of Flashback
While they had both agreed it was only a one night thing, they both broke it two weeks later, and ever since then, they have been seeing each other for 5 months, not really knowing how to stop.
She lets out a breath of air and his eyes open slowly, then once they were all the way open, he gives her a small smile and whispered. "Hi beautiful."
She gives him a small smile in return. "Hi."
He places his elbow on the mattress and uses his other hand to cup her cheek while he asks softly. "You ok?"
"Yeah, I was just thinking about that night."
He nods, understanding what night it she was thinking about, then when he saw her look down, he rubs his thumb up and down her cheek. "I'm sorry..."
She lifts her head up to look into his eyes while cutting him off. "Sorry about us?"
He raises an eyebrow while asking. "Are you?"
She sighed while laying her head down on the pillow, and while she was looking up at the ceiling of the hotel room, she answered. "Yes...no...I don't know, I am so confused." She looks at his concerned face before she places a hand on his cheek as she continued. "I don't like hurting them, I really don't, but I don't know what to do."
He scoots closer to her, takes her hand and kisses it before looking down at her. "We have two options here, we stop or we tell them."
"We have tried to stop, it didn't work."
"Then we have to tell them."
She moved her eyes away from him, not really wanting to do that option either because telling them would have meant that her feelings for Kevin was more than she had felt for her husband and it would also mean that she was more committed to Kevin than him. But she honestly didn't know if that was the case either because despite everything, she still cared and loved Jeremy a lot.
She mentally shook her, then looked at his hopeful face and sighed. "How about we don't decide now, ok?"
He showed a little disappointment, but nodded his head. "Ok, but we do have to have a serious conversation about this soon."
She nodded as she cups his cheek before bringing his head down to hers so they could kiss, which he responded immediately. But before it got too passionate, both of their phones go off, so they pulled back with sigh, then they each reached for their phones and answered them.
When they were done with their calls, Faith looks at him while he looks at her before she spoke first. "Work."
He nodded. "Me too." Then he cups her cheek and asked. "To be continued?"
She nods slowly, and after a peck on the lips, they get up and get ready to go to work.
