A/N: Here it is guys, sorry for the long wait, I've been busy with school and I did NaNoWriMo last month so that took up a lot of my time. Anyway, here is the last chapter of Brand New Wings! Hope you enjoy it :)
Chapter 26
Grace & Choice
"Cas…?" Emma said once more as she peered at the Angel, no, at the God that stood in front of her. It still looked like Cas, his stoic stature and his infamous trench coat, but Emma could feel the power radiating from him, the urge to use his new found strength. It scared her to death.
"Listen, Cas," Dean started, slowly and carefully walking towards him. "You defeated Lucy; you can give back the souls now."
Castiel stared at his friend like he was insane. "Why would I do that? I can do so much good now; I can fix so many of my mistakes."
"You can still do that Cas! With or without soul power!" Dean pressed, grabbing him by his shoulders.
"Don't touch me," Cas said and flung Dean back against the wall. Emma gasped. "And don't tell me what to do; I am your new God."
"I'm sorry Emma," Cas said as he turned to her. "But I'm afraid I'm stepping down from my position as your protector. Besides, when I'm done there will be nothing left that will want to hurt you."
"You've gone crazy," Emma said in barley a whisper.
It looked like Cas didn't hear her. "Well, I must be off. There is so much to do," he said with a smile and vanished.
"We are so fucked," Lynn said, holding on to Murdock's arm tightly.
"You've got that right," Dean said, staring sadly at the place his best friend once stood. Was there even any trace of the old Cas still in him? Emma hoped so, they all couldn't afford to lose him.
"There's nothing we can do about it now," Sam inquired, helping Dean up. "Let's get back to the safe house and rest up, see what Cas is getting up to and go from there."
Emma nodded, even though she didn't like it. She was supposed to feel happy after they killed Lucifer, but the whole thing quickly became too bitter sweet for her taste.
They all quickly returned to the safe house where Jinx and Balthazar were pacing around. They explained to them what happened with Lucifer and Cas. Balthazar couldn't believe it and flew to the nearest bar while Jinx just sat at the couch, staring at the turned off TV.
Emma decided to take some alone time and sat down on the porch steps. She can still remember her conversation with Exarp clear as day, as well as her conversation with Drew. She hoped that he was okay and safe.
"Hey." Emma turned around to see Dean with two beers in one hand and an envelope in the other.
Emma grabbed the beer. "Thanks," she said, popping off the lid and taking a sip.
"This is for you too," he said, taking a seat next to her. He handed her the envelope that had 'Emma' written on it.
"What is it?" she asked, setting her beer down next to her so she could inspect the envelope.
"It's from Gabe. We found it in his pocket after we found him…you know," Dean sighed and took a swig of his beer. "Don't worry, I didn't open it."
Emma looked at the envelope in her hands. It scared her to think what could be inside; she felt something that was protruding out a bit so she figured there was more in there than a letter. She took a deep breath and ripped open the seal.
She grabbed the letter before looking to see what the object was. It was nicely folded (surprisingly; Gabe wasn't the most neat person in the world) and it almost appeared to be written on old parchment. Emma unfolded the letter and read it to herself.
Emma,
If you're reading this then I'm dead. Sorry. I know, I have the worst timing. But it was worth it, trust me. And please don't beat yourself up about it because it's not your damn fault okay. You need to stop hanging around with the Winchesters; their blame is rubbing off on you.
Anyway the reason why I even bothered to confront my dick of a brother was because I had given up. And I didn't want that. I needed to face him and make things right.
Inside this letter you will find a crystal. The crystal holds my Grace. Now listen up because you're about to hear a very important Angel lesson from Professor Gabriel.
Since we share a Grace it means at any time one of us can take the responsibility of having the full Grace (yours and mine put together). Just like what happened a few years ago when I took back my Grace. You can do the same thing. You can become a full Archangel and a very powerful one at that.
Listen, you don't have to take the Grace if you don't want to but I have a feeling something bigger and nastier than Lucifer will be coming into your near future and you will need all the help you can get.
Oh and thanks for being so nice to me for all these years.
Your Grace Buddy,
Gabriel
Emma stared at the letter in disbelief. An Archangel, she could become a freaking Archangel. It never occurred to her that the Grace thing could go both ways.
"What does it say?" Dean asked, peeking over her shoulder a bit. Emma quickly folded the letter back up and put it off to the side.
"Gabe gave me his Grace," she said, pulling the crystal out from the envelope. "He said that I can become an Archangel."
Dean stared at her in shock. "You can what?"
"The Grace thing goes both ways. Once I have all the Grace it will make me an Archangel."
"So, you're gonna do that?" Dean asked.
"I-I don't know," Emma studied the crystal, rubbing it between her fingers as she thought. "But what if I get too overwhelmed with power like Cas did? Or what if I literally become Gabriel. It is his Grace."
Dean laughed, "I don't think that will happen."
Emma was silent for a moment just staring at the crystal. "The whole reason why I'm the Chosen One is because I'm part human. The human part of me makes me who I am. I'm not sure if I'm ready to give that up."
Dean tried comforting her by rubbing her back. "You have a good point there. But the thing is you don't have humanity just by being human. I think humanity is being able to care about people and being able to face challenges everyday as you hurdle through life. Even if you are an Archangel it doesn't mean that you won't be human."
Emma clutched the crystal in her hand.
"And, listen, I'm not trying to make a decision for you. That's up to you. But having the Chosen One turned Archangel could really help us with this Cas situation," Dean added.
"Yeah you're probably right about that," Emma agreed. She felt a tear roll down her cheek and onto her arm.
Emma knew what she had to do. She would be changing herself again. She won't be Megan. She won't be Emma Crimson. She will be Emma the Archangel. She swore she was going to have another identity crisis. But after hearing Dean and thinking of everyone around her and the world she had to take care of she knew there was only one option.
So, with her hands shaking and her stomach full of butterflies, she stood up from the porch step and walked down to the grass.
Dean looked at her, looking anxious to see what would happen next.
Emma took a deep breath. "Dean, whatever happens, promise me you'll keep everyone safe."
Dean nodded.
Emma smiled. "Let's make a power play." She smashed the crystal to the ground and as the Grace floated around her she felt safe. She made a choice. And she chose hope.
