I think I have an idea on where this is going... Not positive
Luna stared at the door, feet planted firmly on the sidewalk. On either side of her stood Ward and Skye. Skye knelt down to her height and gripped her shoulder as parents and children walked around them, including Maria and Maya. Luna waved to Maya quietly, watching the girl disappear inside.
"Come on Luna,"Skye smiled
"No." Luna says, shaking her head. Skye looked at her confused.
"Come on, don't you wanna go and play with Maya?" Skye asked. But Luna shook her head.
"I don't wanna go in there." Luna shook her head. Skye huffed, puffing her cheeks out. She had her heart set on this being easy, Luna was always a good angel. And her "husband" was of no help, standing their awkwardly while Skye was left to convince the child on her own.
"Luna honey, you have nothing to be afraid of," Skye insisted, "Daddy and I are going to come and pick you up afterwards."
Luna shook her head, gripping Skye's forearm tightly. She had tears in her eyes, "No! Mommy please don't leave me!"
"Luna honey," Skye had to pry the child off her arm and gripped her shoulders, "I can't come in there with you, your teacher won't allow it."
Luna started to cry, not cry, sob actually. The tears rained down harder than the rain from yesterday. Skye briefly glanced up at the dark, dark grey cloud sky. She couldn't let Luna get away with not going. Luna had to go to school, it was part of the mission. To integrate into the community. Skye glanced around, parents shooting her looks of either sympathy, empathy, or complete annoyance and disrespect. Skye already hated those people.
"Luna, Luna baby it's time to stop crying and-" Luna's crying cut her off and for a moment, Skye was scared she'd use her sonic scream.
Skye wasn't sure what to do, when Ward suddenly swooped in, grabbing Luna. Skye inwardly smiled, knowing Ward would give the child tough love and make her go. But then Grant Ward surprised her, Grant Ward turned around and marched his ass back to the car with their daughter in his arms.
"G-Brett!" Skye saved herself, the G for Grant sounding like Gahh a bit, or the start of the use of god.
"What are you doing?" Skye caught up to him, gripping his shoulder and spinning him around.
"Luna isn't gonna go to school today. We'll try again tomorrow."
"Try again tomorrow?"Skye glared at him, "She has to go today."
Luna sniffled, crying into her fathers shoulder. Ward rubbed her back and looked at Skye, "Chloe. There is no possible way we will be able to coax her into entering that building and staying there alone for an entire day. We're gonna take her home, and we will work with her and prepare her for tomorrow. But there is no way she is entering that building if she's gonna be completely miserable."
Skye stared at him, mouth agape as Ward walked over to the car. He opened the door and got Luna nice and comfortable into she car seat. He rubbed the top of her head affectionately. All the while Skye turned to go inform the teacher of what has transpired.
"Don't worry baby, you don't have to go today. We'll try again tomorrow"
"Skye mad at me." Luna whispered.
"She's not mad at you baby," Ward says "She's gonna be mad at me for being such a softy and not making you suck it up."
"Oh you bet I am" Skye muttered walking up from behind him and got into the car without another word. Ward sighed, kissed Luna on the head and closed her door. Getting into the drivers side, he headed home. Ward sighed, he was definitely in for it now.
Luna sat in her bed drawing a picture when there was a knock on her door. Her curtains were drawn shut and she had taken off her necklace. For a moment, Luna contemplated whether she should open it or not but she stood and opened the door. She smiled, letting her father in before closing the door and hopping onto her bed again.
"I thought you were Skye." She says softly as Ward took a seat on the edge of her bed, "Is she still mad?"
Ward made a face, making the so-so sign with his hand, "Sort of. But only at me."
Luna nods, focusing on her picture. Crayons and colored pencils littered the top of her covers. She seemed so uncharacteristically quiet. It worried Ward, no it scared Ward.
"Luna baby, why don't you wanna go to school?" Ward asks after a while.
He was surprised that his answer was crying. Ward reached over, hearing her sobs before he sensed them and began to rock her. Luna cried into his chest, fisting his shirt, her sobs drowning out the rain from outside. For a moment he considered changing the subject, but Luna stopped him from making that decision.
"Momma and Dada dropped me off." Luna sniffled "It was-it was car-ear day. Dada stayed with me. He was gonna get his turn, he was and then- then there was screaming outside. And loud booming and shooting sounds-" Luna broke off crying harder. Ward held her, rocking her back and forth waiting for her to continue.
"They made us leave the school... the monsters were everywhere. They-they were everywhere, killing everyone." Luna hiccuped, looking strict with fear. Ward held her in his lap. He interrupted her before she could continue.
"Shhh" Ward whispered in her ear holding her close. He stroked her hair calming her, "No need to continue. Its ok, it's ok now, lets not think of it right now."
"I scared-" Luna hiccuped and cried. Ward held her, he held her close trying to sooth her quickly. But the next sentence out of her mouth crushed his heart, "I don't wanna die."
"Baby I won't let anyone kill you." He says "I won't let any man, woman, child, or alien bastard try to take you from me. I won't let anyone try to take you away from me forever."
Luna hiccuped crying, hugging him with her small blue arms. She pressed her face against his chiseled chest, "I love you daddy.. I love you!"
Ward held her, letting her sob into his chest, "I love you too sweetie, I love you too."
Ward held her close, rubbing her back and whispering soothing words into her ear. He stroked her hair and kissed her face. He did this for a long time, the rain a soft drizzle compared to Luna's hiccuping sobs. He held her close, her ear against his heart, and after an hour of crying and hugging he felt through their bond that she had fallen fast asleep. Standing, Ward held Luna in his arms as he drew her lilac floral sheets back and placed her on the mattress. Her head lolled to the side, pressing her cheek and ear into the soft white pillow. Her face was facing the door, her eyes shut. Ward drew the covers over her, tucking her in and looked closely at Luna's face. He softly brushed some tears away and stood cleaning up the crayons and color pencils. He placed them away before picking up the picture. He stared at it for a long time, before gently placing it on the bedside table.
Ward turned to leave, but before leaving he reached down and kissed the child on the top of her head.
Ok. Now, I was gonna add a scene involving Fury, and another scene where Luna manages to actually enter preschool and not chicken out all in this chapter. But... I think the emotion in this chapter speaks more than any of those scenes I could Write.
So... Until chapter 27! I do apologize if I broke hearts, I felt a bit sad and in the mood to cry a bit as I wrote this. But it's to actually give some insight in what Luna has gone through and still is going through. She's never cried about her real family or what happened until now. However, I'm debating whether or not Skye should be kept in the loop. Of course, everyone on the bus will know what Luna admitted, though it's clear Ward and Luna didn't remember that. Hopefully Ward won't be stuck in the doghouse... We can only hope that Ward explains the situation to Skye.
Thank you for reading!
