"What the hell are you doing, Bo?" Lauren asked, more angry than she was letting on.
"I was sleeping," she said getting up from her bed, trying not to wake Kia.
She took a look at Lauren in the full light now, her grogginess fading away, and saw her. Her hair, her clothes, everything about her was so perfect in that moment.
"Wow, Lauren, you look-"
"I don't wanna hear it, Bo," she said. "I can't even believe you'd have the nerve to sit here and try to compliment me after I just found you with your arms around another woman."
"It wasn't like that, and you know it," she said, getting up and attempting to console Lauren.
"Don't touch me," Lauren said flatly. "When was the last time you fed?"
"I don't know."
"Last night," Lauren mumbled under her breath.
"I haven't fed since -"
"Since me," Lauren said.
"That was what the serum you developed was for now wasn't it. To make it so that your chi was enough for me to survive on, so that I didn't have to feed from others?"
"Well, yes, I just didn't expect it to work this well, I didn't expect your body to accept the serum naturally."
"You doubted yourself, for a lack of better words," Bo suggested.
"Well, yes, but I think you need to feed again," Lauren said, waiting for Bo to meet her gaze as she stared at her.
"No, Lauren, not without someone here to watch me, I don't even feel hungry."
"That's how the serum works, call it a side effect. You won't feel hungry, until your hunger is at its most severe. You won't feel like you need to feed, until your instincts tell you you're about to starve. Which can be very dangerous. I should have done more tests. It seems like you can go three days before the lack of feeding starts to set in and make you feel weak, exhausted, hungry."
"Lauren, i'm fine. I feel fine. Seriously, you don't have to worry about doing anymore tests or anything like that. I feel better than I ever have," Bo lied. The shot made her feel like half of who she was before. She felt satisfied, but never full, as if her thirst was never truly quenched all the way. But how could she tell Lauren, when she already felt like the serum was failing? When Lauren herself felt like a failure. She couldn't make her feel any worse than she already did about her work. What she had produced, kinks or not, was a miracle of science, a miracle for all the Fae. It made Lauren more powerful than any of them, but also made her a target. That was what worried Bo the most.
"Well, I need to give you a shot once a week to maintain the chemicals in your body. So i'll need to give you another one tomorrow," Lauren said.
"Lauren," Bo said, moving to her now, placing her hands on her waist.
"I'll see you later, Bo," she said, moving Bo's hands and walking out of the room.
"Lauren, wait," Bo called after, following her out of the room and down the stairs, grabbing her arm just as she reached the bottom step. "Don't leave like this."
"Like what?" she asked, knowing exactly what Bo meant.
"Angry, upset with me."
"I have a right to be!" Lauren raised her voice. "I came here as a surprise, we were gonna have drinks at the Dal, I came over here to -"
"To what?" Bo asked, her face looking concerned.
"I don't know," Lauren bowed her head, looking at her feet.
"Lauren," Bo spoke again, her voice turning softer than ever before.
"I came over here just to be with you, have a little 'before' party. I just wanted to spend time with you before we went out. I thought it would be nice, since we don't really have all the one on one time I would like. But I guess you already had that with someone else," Lauren felt her anger flare up once again.
"For the last time, I didn't sleep with her! She needed to feel safe, I told her she could sleep in my bed, just for a peace of mind, none of us can imagine what it's like you be her."
"You can," Lauren said, "you were her at one point."
"I know that, that's what makes me try that much harder to help her. I don't ever want someone to feel the way I felt; alone."
"Well you have fun with that," Lauren said. "Don't worry about drinks tonight, I think i'm gonna fly solo on this one."
With that, she took her last steps down the stairs and up the door, slamming it behind her.
Bo stood frozen on the stairs, starring blankly for a few moments.
"Bo?" she heard Kia call, rubbing her eyes at the top of the stairs. "Is everything alright? Was Lauren just here?"
"Yeah," she said, thawing herself out and returning to her room. She moved past Kia as if she wasn't even there.
"Did something happen between the two of you?" Kia asked, following her.
"Everything is fine," Bo lied.
"Obviously something."
Bo sat on the edge of her bed, her head down; thinking.
"Bo," Kia said again, this time louder. "Talk to me."
"Lauren thinks we slept together I guess. I woke up with my arms around you, she can in to surprise me, and saw us. We didn't; you know?"
"No, no, we didn't I fell asleep almost immediately and so did you. No funny business. I swear."
"Good, I just wish Lauren could hear you say that."
"I can understand why she's upset with you, it does look bad, given that you're a succubus and all."
"Thats just it, i'm tired of being judged just for who I am. So what i'm a succubus, my life isn't all about sex, and feeding off of chi and all that. I am normal too. Everyone thinks i'm a cheater, a liar, but i'm not. Well, a little bit of a liar, I guess, but for her own good. I would never hurt someone else on purpose, I try to be good as best I can you know, and still all everyone sees is the bad."
"Believe me," Kia said, walking over and sitting next to her. "I know what that's like, but you can't let it get you down, and make you feel bad, you can't make everyone like you. Your friends, are either gonna be there, or not be there, and if not, that's their loss now isn't it?"
"I know, you're right, it's just hard when everyone counts on you, I just don't wanna let them down."
"You can't save everyone, Bo, I wouldn't even be mad if you couldn't save me. It's okay."
"I did save you, you are saved, and I wouldn't have it any other way," Bo said, lifting her head up to smile.
Suddenly a feeling crept in, deep inside Bo. It twisted her insides, made her feel anxious; afraid.
It was her hunger, and it was starring her right in the face, a feed looking back at her.
