Chapter 26: Carlos POV
I smiled at myself as I stood in front of the mirror, looking at myself with my uniform on. The new uniforms look great; at this point, my uniform from 15 years ago seems so retro. It felt good to actually have this on again.
I'm not actually going on the field yet, don't worry. I'm going in for training today to learn some things old and new.
"Pops! Where are you?" I heard Evan call.
"In my room!" I called back.
A few seconds later, he walked into the room.
"Looking…legal," he smirked.
"Thanks?" I laughed. "What's up?"
"I wanted to talk to you about Ethan…he seems…off," Evan said.
"Aren't we all," I chuckled.
"I'm serious," he said.
The smile dropped from my face. If something was wrong with another one of my kids, I wanted to know about it.
"Well, what do you mean off?" I asked.
"He just seems distracted," Evan shrugged. "He's not acting like himself."
"Well, he's a senior in high school," I said. "On top of that he's applying to college, his sisters are missing, most of the people around him are broken or in danger, and no it isn't normal, but I can understand. I haven't noticed a change, but if it concerns you, talk to him."
"He'd never tell me anything," Evan said.
"If it's bad enough, he'd confide in you," I patted Evan's shoulder. "Trust me. I'm glad to see that you're concerned for him though. Maybe you can finally put the sibling rivalry thing aside?"
"Never," Evan laughed.
"Evan, hurry up or you're walking to school!" Ethan called up the stairs.
"You'd better get going," I hugged him. "I love you, and everything's going to be okay."
"I love you too pops," he smiled.
Then he was gone. I looked at myself again, realizing that I didn't have my pin on. Okay, so when I was an officer the first time, I had this special pin with an eagle on it, kind of like Katniss and her mockingjay pin. Anyway, I wear it on my uniform as a good luck type of thing. I wonder where it is.
I scanned the room, remembering that I put it in Logan's underwear drawer after I was suspended 15 years ago. I walked over to the dresser and opened the drawer. I dug my hand in, searching for the pin under my husband's underwear.
Eventually, I felt it and grabbed it. The fact that it's still here after 15 years kind of concerns me. I felt a piece of paper rub my hand as I pulled it back. Hmm, I wonder what it could be. No Carlos, don't go snooping in Logan's stuff. I closed the drawer and put the pin on.
I kept thinking about what it was though. Logan and I shared everything and if he was hiding something, I wanted to know what it was. I couldn't help but walk back across the room and open the drawer, grabbing the paper. It turned out to be an envelope.
I looked at the envelope. It was a letter from the police department addressed to me. Why would Logan have something addressed to me in his drawer? I opened the letter and read it.
Dear Carlos,
Following the events that happened years ago now, I am happy to inform you that your 15 year suspension is up and you can come back to work on the force! I understand that this is sudden, but you were a valuable member of the squad. Call me and we can talk it out. You have my number
Signed
Ernest Jackson, Chief
This was the letter than Mike said was sent to me weeks ago. Logan had this in his drawer, which meant he was hiding this from me? But why? I was about to find out. I marched downstairs, envelope in hand. It kind of ticked me off that he did this.
I walked into the kitchen where he was making breakfast.
"Good morning sunshine," he smiled. "You look amazing in that uniform!"
He tried to kiss me, but I just shoved the letter in his face.
"You went in my underwear drawer?" He asked after looking at it.
"What was it doing in your underwear drawer?" I asked ever so politely. "Don't lie to me either."
"I-" Logan started.
"What are you going to say? You wanted to surprise me so you hid it there and forgot about it? Because the look on your face tells me different," I said.
"Damn," he whispered. "You're good."
"What the hell were you doing with this? Why didn't you give it to me?"
"I have to go to work," Logan walked to the coffee maker.
"No, you're going to answer my question," I said. "What makes it okay to hide my mail from me?"
"Carlos just let it go? You have your mail and you have your job," Logan said.
"What other things have you hid from me? More mail? Money? a second family?"
"What!" Logan gave me a look.
"I know you don't have a second family, it was just for emphasis," I said. "But still, what are you hiding? Why would you even do this?"
"NOTHING," Logan said.
"There's an obvious reason," I said.
"FINE" Logan yelled. "Maybe I don't like your job at the station and I didn't want you to see it because you didn't even realize it yourself and you seemed happy without it!"
"I was happy without it, but I'm also happy with it," I reminded him.
I just stood there for a second.
"That isn't an excuse not to tell me. I would've remembered anyway," I said.
"Well, I'm sorry for not wanting it for you," Logan rolled his eyes.
"What is such the big deal with it. I'm a grown man and I'm going back after we have this baby," I said.
"If we have this baby!" Logan reminded me.
"Loges, come on now," I said.
"It's too much. Even if you do survive having this baby, I can't be content knowing that you're putting your life on the line daily," Logan said.
"I'll be fine," I said.
"How do you know!" Logan yelled. "You got shot the last time while you were pregnant with Evan."
"And it's my choice Logan!" I yelled. "I would hope my husband would support me in that."
"I want to, but it's scary."
"And it isn't for me?" I asked. "You're a doctor. You work around death and disease everyday. You could come home with something, or someone could sue us if you mess up, or someone could do something to you because they aren't happy with what you did for them. Anything can happen. Your job is a risk and I live with it. My job a risk and you'll have to deal with it. It's something I love, so I'm keeping this job."
"You got shot the last time!" Logan reminded me. "I don't get shot on the job!
"Let's remember because I got shot by a crazy man who just so happens to be YOUR "BABY DADDY" trust me, being shot by him was much worse pain for me than you. You kept him in my life, so that's a risk that only you can control, not me!"
Logan didn't say anything else.
"Fine," he said barely above a whisper. "Have fun."
His face had no expression. Okay, maybe I shouldn't have said that.
"Logan…" I sighed.
He ignored me and grabbed his things. A few seconds later I heard the front door slam and his car start up. Great, even more unneeded drama.
