Blood Sharing
Chapter 26- Magic
Song: Magic- Coldplay
A:N: I can't believe how long we've kept this fic going and all the new readers picked up along the way! It's pretty awesome, thank you for all the support. Please continue to r+r it really means a lot to me to get those! This next story arch is something I've been planning for a while but now I feel like it'll copy the show too much so I'm trying to put my own spin on it. There are some influences from the original TVD books too. I hope you'll listen to the song, it's killer! Much love- xo -
"Oh my God!"Elena leaped out of bed, totally nude and spun around looking at herself. "No no!" she looked in the mirror.
Damon was obviously shocked, but couldn't help laughing. "Remember the books you were reading when I first met you?" he laughed.
Elena stared daggers at him unsure why he'd bring up books at a time like this. Then it hit her. "No." she shook her head at him, willing him not to say it.
"Elena…" he cooed with a tease in his tone.
"No…" she growled.
"You're a Twilight Vampire!" he gave her the toothiest grin while Elena grabbed the bed sheet and wrapped it around her.
"What the hell is happening?!" she cried standing in front of the full length mirror and turning from side to side. "Oh Damon I'm a lighthouse." She was still laughing. "It's not funny."
"It kind of is." Damon chuckled coming up behind her to look in the mirror. He ran his fingers along her bare arms and down to her wrists.
"Be serious." She groaned. "We need to find Bonnie and figure out what it is. And how to turn it off. I could be dying."
"Do you feel like you're dying?" asked Damon.
"Well…" Elena took a mental check of her body. "…no."
"Okay then. Calm down. Laugh at the hilarity of the situation." He replied. She shot him a look in the reflection of the mirror. He shot her one back, and managed to flare his nostrils. Even a miffed Elena couldn't keep a straight face at that. "Bonnie doesn't have the answer for everything you know." added Damon gently kissing along her neck. "You and I are weird. You're a doppelganger. We have a special unique blood bond. Nobody seems to know enough about it all. You were just bled dry, filled up with new blood. It's probably something weird."
"You're not the one glowing." Pointed out Elena ignoring his attempts to lure her back to bed. Not easily, mind you.
"Might have something to do with my stone heart." Damon whispered in her ear.
"I don't want the others to know." Whined Elena.
"You're embarrassed because you're glowing?" asked Damon with a smirk.
"It's not that." Started Elena. "It's just, everything is always about us, and poor Elena." She admitted.
"What do you mean?" asked Damon stopping to take her seriously this time.
"I mean, I had my memory erased. Then you died. Then we got married. Then I was kidnapped. Like, seeing a pattern? What about what everyone else is going through. Jeremy and Bonnie have something going on. I think Bonnie has stuff going on by herself. Stefan, Caroline… there's Tyler drama. What about Matt?" explained Elena.
"You're talking to the wrong guy, I'm perfectly happy being self-absorbed." Teased Damon, but they both knew there was some truth to it.
"I just want to figure this one out on my own. I want to stop being 'poor Elena' the damsel in distress. I'm a vampire now. That isn't supposed to happen. I need to be strong." She slumped on the side of the bed. Damon climbed up behind her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders and plopped his head against her back.
"You are strong Elena. Look at the list you just gave me. You've gone through all that. We've gone through all that. Don't ever doubt the love your friends have for you. It used to drive me crazy when I first met you." He gave her a half smirk. "I couldn't understand why they were so devoted to you. But now I do."
"Why is that?" asked Elena. "Why are they devoted to me?" she thought that sounded a bit cheesy.
"Because you're devoted to them" grinned Damon. "You care about everyone else above yourself. You're selfless. So they care about you back. You see the best in everyone. Even a crazy vampire like me. You don't just see the best, you bring out the best." He kissed her shoulder. Elena sat and thought a while.
"I'd still rather not bother them with it. I mean, like you said, Bonnie doesn't know everything about all supernatural stuff. And I want to be more attentive to me friends and be, you know, a bit back to normal."
"I guess that's the usual response after a trauma like kidnapping." Remarked Damon.
"…and then there's you. Die, come back. Get married." Teased Elena.
"Best decision ever." Grinned Damon kissing the back of her neck, making her shiver.
While Damon and Elena were sharing their moment, Caroline and Stefan were in the woods hunting. Stefan had been spending the morning explaining everything he could to Caroline about their 'd been out hunting all morning and now into the afternoon.
"I agree with Elena." Said Caroline wiping fresh animal blood off her lips. It never worked for her the way it worked for Stefan, but she showed him support by going with him anyway. "Your mom may have a few loose nuts but she thinks there is a bigger threat here. Remember when everyone wanted Elena gone so Klaus couldn't break his curse? It feels like something like that."
Stefan nodded in agreement before bursting for a rabbit. He sucked the animal dry and then discarded the soft body. He felt bad eating little creatures, but better them than a human. He sometimes wondered if he would of ended up a vegetarian if he was born in modern times. "She never had much to say before. All those instances I caught her keeping tabs. I knew she was alive but she just watched from a distance. I figured she was staying away because of guilt or Katherine." Katherine's involvement only served to strengthen the blow.
"Something is definitely up." Agreed Caroline. "We know so little about this weird blood bond that Damon and Elena had. She brought him back from the dead, Stefan. If only we had Andraia and Darien now. Maybe they know about this thing your mother is going on about."
"She thinks a war is coming. Damon thinks it is just the usual apocalyptic stuff. But I'm worried it's more than just that. " admitted Stefan.
"Well if there is some sort of war we know it somehow involves you brothers and Elena." Started Caroline, trying to think out loud.
"I'm not sure if it's even specifically us brothers. Maybe just Damon." Added Stefan.
"Or maybe all vampires. Maybe you guys just have some sort of special role because Damon could use that rock thingy or whatever." Finished Caroline.
"Wait." Said Stefan, freezing in his stance. His eyes wide like a deer, staring out into the distance. Caroline mimicked his stance and listened. After a few moments of silence passed she spoke up.
"What is it?" she asked.
"My mother. She came back!" yelled Stefan taking off running.
Caroline followed him, the two of them bounding through trees and shrubs at an intense speed. Thorns gashed into them as Stefan simply drove through. His wounds healed nearly as quickly as the thorns could whip him. He skidded to a stop in front of the boarding house. Caroline couldn't sense a new vampire, she looked to Stefan and he shook his head. "She's long gone now."
"But she left something." Caroline walked up to the doorstep. There was a brown parcel tied with twine sitting on it.
"Be careful." Cautioned Stefan.
"You think she's trying to bomb us?" teased Caroline.
"Who can tell?" shrugged Stefan.
Caroline carefully lifted the package and could tell from the weight and shape it was a book. "Come on, let's take it inside."
Stefan followed her in. They sat at the kitchen table, staring at the package. Stefan reached to open it but Caroline swatted his hand away. "Probably better I do it." She said pulling on the twine. The paper fell away to reveal a very old looking leather-bound bible.
"A Bible?" asked Stefan confused.
"Maybe Damon wasn't so far off." Groaned Caroline. She pulled the Bible closer to her. "I think it's just an ordinary Bible. Was your mom religious?"
"Well everyone was sort of religious back then." Explained Stefan.
"A few things are circled." Remarked Caroline as she flipped through.
"Like what?" asked Stefan.
"…And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent…." Read Caroline
"That sounds like Revelations." Replied Stefan looking over her shoulder.
"Point two for Damon." Grinned Caroline. "A lot of Revelations is circled. Listen: And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration."
"Creepy. What is she trying to tell us and why couldn't she just say it?" asked Stefan annoyed.
"Maybe she didn't think you'd believe her." Shrugged Caroline. "She did sort of have that whole crazy look about her."
While Caroline flipped through the Bible, Stefan got up and grabbed her a bag of blood knowing the hunting wouldn't have been enough. He'd grown closer to Caroline over the past little while. She'd become his best friend and he knew her habits. So he wasn't at all surprised when he came back to the table with the blood and she was making notes.
"This is getting a little freaky. It seems like all the verses could be interpreted as either about war and maybe even about vampires." She observed showing him her notes.
"Well Revelations is all about the end times, a great war, is that what my mother thinks is happening?" Stefan asked thoughtfully.
"Maybe it's not the end of everything, but maybe the end of vampires? Listen to this big passage she's got circled:
And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that so journeth among you eat blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
Wow so okay, apparently God doesn't like us vampires. It's no wonder people used to think holy water and crosses would harm us."
"Leviticus." Replied Stefan. "I'd read that one before. Back when. Well, I was feeling guilty in my ripper days." He admitted.
"Your mom thinks a war is coming for vampires. I'm going to hang on to this. I wanna read through it and maybe compare it to a newer version. I'm going to copy out everything she circled. It must be a message. I know Bonnie can help. I sure wish we had Alaric…" Caroline mused.
"There are a lot of days I wish we had Alaric. Like every day." Stefan gave a sad smile. Caroline matched it back. "Okay, I'll leave it with you. I'm nervous that Mother came here. But as far as I know she didn't harm anyone. Hopefully she realized trying to kill Elena wasn't going to work. Maybe I should go up there and check on them." Caroline gave him a look.
"The newly weds were jus reunited after your mother tried to kill one of them. I don't think now is a good time. Why don't you text Damon instead and leave it with him?" suggested Caroline thinking more of Elena. "Weird. This quote that is circled is about light." She added noticing the quote seemed out of place as she was making her notes.
"Really?" asked Stefan taking out his phone, to take her advice. "What does it say?"
"The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned." Caroline paused. "Well at least that one is a little nicer. All the others were so morbid."
"I don't know." Said Stefan with a concerned look. "I think you're right about the theme. It's sounding like a war on vampires. Those dwelling in the region of the shadow of death? Doesn't that sound like vampires to you?"
Caroline thought for a moment and nodded. "So it's not about bringing God's light or whatever to people. Maybe it's about bringing the sun to vampires." She furrowed her brows and the tension in the room became just a little thicker.
"Try not to get freaked out." Said Stefan placing a hand on her shoulder. It almost made her jump. "This is typical of the Church and pretty typical of all the historical wars on vampires using hunters and stuff. It's all fire and brimstone. My mother didn't leave us anything new. Maybe she is trying to scare Damon or Elena." He'd texted Damon to let him know their mother had been in the area and Damon had texted back everything was fine, Elena just felt weak and wanted to spend another day in bed. Having been severely poisoned by vervain before, Stefan wasn't surprised. "That's what the church has always done. Scared people with hell."
A knock at the door made them both jump.
Damon and Elena had literally been spending the afternoon acting like kids in his room. They'd had a bath together at Damon's insistence and Elena had joked that maybe she'd married a merman. Then they'd actually played a game of cards and told stories of childhood. The glow on Elena's skin was still present, but it was fainter. Damon hadn't wanted to blood share out of fear it would intensify the glow again. So they'd been having fun killing time waiting for it to work through her system. At least, that's what they'd hoped would happen.
Damon had been digging through his closet wanting to find a leather jacket he'd studded in the 80s to show Elena as a joke when she heard a clanging and a weird musical sound. "What as that?" she called laughed. "Did you knock over a guitar?"
"Funny enough, yes." Said Damon coming out, hands full of clothing, photos, and a dusty old six string guitar. When he got closer Elena realized it wasn't dusty at all, just very old and worn. "I used to play all the time. It was a big deal in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Though all in different ways."
"Did you go through a Nirvana phase?" laughed Elena.
"Might of," smirked Damon. "I was also a big fan of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin." He laughed plunking away at the beginning of stairway to heaven for added affect. They sat on the floor and Damon rolled out the jacket. Elena reached out to touch it, feeling weird and surreal knowing it was older than she was. She flipped through the photos of punk rocker Damon.
"Oh my God Damon- eyeliner!"
He shrugged. "I know, I shouldn't have tried to improve on perfection but you know." He'd found a blood bag and was now sucking on it, and tossed her another. Having his own miny fridge was working out.
"Will I be like this?" Elena asked
"Like what?" slurped Damon. Elena picked at the bag.
"Living through new genres able to look back and never age."
"It goes with the territory. Living dead and all." He replied.
"I guess I forget sometimes. I mean I could never forget I'm a vampire. But I forget I'll be young forever. I won't age. It's weird." She took a sip from the bag.
"You get used to it. Honestly. It's exciting. I saw airplanes become invented, and then spaceships to the moon, and now smartphones! I'm excited for whatever comes next." He put the guitar in his lap and plunked away at it clumsily.
Elena smiled listening. "Play me a song. Sing to me." She requested.
"I can't. I'm terrible." Laughed Damon. "Here's my smoke on the water." He smashed out the famous chords as Elena laughed even more. Damon noticed something as she laughed. He'd been noticing it the whole time they were in his room. It gave him an idea. "But I've got an idea for listening to something better." He said hopping up and grabbing a few things off his night stand. Then he made for the window.
"Hey!" cried Elena jumping up. "Where are you going?" her hair was loose and fell down her back, and she was wearing one of his white dress shirts half buttoned. Damon was now standing in the window ledge with a soft bag at his side with things filled in it. He was shirtless except for the black jeans he'd pulled on and bare foot.
"Come on." He held out a hand.
"Why?" asked Elena laughing.
"Don't make me pull an Aladdin and ask if you trust me." He teased making reference to the famous Disney scene. Elena laughed again, that musical laugh and took his hand as he pulled her up onto the ledge. "We're going on the roof." He instructed taking the lead as she followed, casting a glance below to make sure no one was watching. She could only imagine what this might look like, and of course that was just the type of thing Damon pulled.
Stefan narrowed his eyes at the person in his doorway. "Speak of the devil." He groaned as Caroline came up behind him.
"What do you want?" she demanded feeling far less polite than Stefan was acting.
"A chance to explain." Replied Darien. Caroline scrunched her face up. Stefan just stared.
"Sure, you can explain why you flaked out on us. And why you're suddenly showing up here. It's a little interesting considering certain things that have been happening…." Replied Caroline.
"Happening with Elena?" prompted Darien.
"…and what would you know about that?" asked Stefan.
"I didn't know anything at first. You must understand…" he started turning to look at Caroline. "Klaus can't kill me but he can kill Andraia. I had to get her out of here fast and into safety. We had no idea about anything else until just a little while ago. Someone is going to try and kill Elena."
"Tell us something we don't know. That already happened." Replied Caroline rolling her eyes. She was not impressed with Darien's attempts to get back in with them.
"And she survived?" he asked looking genuinely shocked.
"Yes. She's fine. Married actually." Said Stefan with a grin.
That took Darien aback for a moment. "We thought the prophecy was about us." Said Darien solemnly. "For centuries we thought it was about us and that Esther in her wisdom knew about it and put all of these things in motion." He eyes were distant and far away.
"What do you mean the prophecy?" prodded Caroline. He was starting to sound like Mama Salvatore. "You better not be playing with us Darien."
"Do you honestly think I'd show my face here if it wasn't extremely important after running away?" he asked. "You're all in a lot of danger. If I had any idea the last time we were here maybe things would have gone differently…. You need to take me to see Elena."
Caroline and Stefan exchanged a look trying to decide what to do.
Meanwhile, Elena and Damon were on the roof. He'd propped up his little mp3 player with two mini speakers. The sun was setting and music was floating around them from the little machines. "My lady." Said Damon taking a step to the middle of the flat part on the roof overlooking the porch, and holding out his hands.
"What are we doing?" she asked taking them as he pulled her close.
"We're dancing. So I can show you something."
He spun her around slowly. He began to sing softly along with the music that was playing. Elena might not of even picked up on it had it not been for her vampire hearing.
Call it magic Call it true Call it magic When I'm with you And I just got broken Broken into two Still I call it magic When I'm next to you
They stepped carefully around the hot shingles, and the sun began to set in the background behind them sending colours not unlike the ones they'd see when they bloodshared. There was something magical about being together underneath the sky. The stars, the sun, the night… they all held special symbolism to Damon and Elena. He spun her carefully, her wavy hair falling along her shoulders, a smile on her face, and something else he noticed. He'd been right. And pretty soon she'd know what that meant.
And I don't, and I don't and I don't, and I don't No, I don't, It's true I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't No, I don't, It's true I don't, no, I don't no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you
He sang along pulling her close to him, pressing his forehead against hers. Elena felt the familiar shiver of their blood bond. It was like a refreshing wind against her skin. His hands were tight around her shoulders, but hers danced freely across his chest as he lead her around the roof.
Call it magic Cut me into two And with all your magic I disappear from view And I can't get over Can't get over you Still I call it magic It's such a precious jewel
While they were dancing Stefan, Caroline, and Darien close in tow were looking around the boarding house for them. Stefan had shown Darien the Bible while Caroline explained the verses that were circled. "It is about a war. A Holy war between the Heavens and vampires." Explained Darien. "We'd always heard about it. It was like a vampire bedtime story in a way. Meant to scare people we used to think but then Andraia began to study it…" they paused to check the bedroom. When no one replied to the knock Stefan opened the door.
"They aren't here." He announced.
"Tell me what she researched, what did she find out?" asked Caroline.
"Like I said, we thought it was about us. A vampire with a heart of stone, a blood bond… that sounds like us." Darien explained.
"Sounds like them too." Replied Stefan.
"Shhh." Said Caroline.
"What?" asked Stefan
"Listen." They were all quiet for a moment.
And I don't, and I don't and I don't, and I don't No, I don't, It's true I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't No, I don't, It's true I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you
"They're on the roof." Said Stefan.
"Is Damon singing?" asked Caroline as she followed him back down the stairs, Darien still in tow. "Keep talking stone man."
"I've been this way a long time. It's the reason Andraia and I kept to ourselves. We already had Klaus after us, we didn't want the rest of the vampire community after Andraia or possibly someone else." Explained Darien.
"So when you say the vampire community coming after you, you mean something about you two made you a threat?" asked Stefan as they made their way outside.
"Yeah."
Damon and Elena were still dancing, and he was still singing softly to her.
Wanna fall I fall so far I wanna fall I fall so hard And I call it magic And I call it true I call it magic
He smiled at her through those pearly whites, grinning ear to ear. She leaned into his chest. "I'm still not sure what you wanted to show me. But this is nice." She sighed.
"I figured out when you glow." Said Damon non-chalantly after a few moments of silence with the ambience of the setting sun and music. That caught Elena's attention. The sun was almost down now, and the point he was trying to make became very obvious as Elena stopped moving and looked down at her own skin. It was brighter than it had been yet.
"I figured it out in the bedroom, but I wanted to test my theory. You're glowing when you're happy Elena." He laughed. "Like mood lighting."
Elena turned her hands over and over. The light began to fade as she obviously became upset. "Hey hey." Said Damon turning her face toward hers by her chin. "You're beautiful Elena. Didn't you listen to the song? It's magic." He smiled again and the glow twinkled a little. "I don't know why it's happening, but I think you can finally see yourself the way I see you. Especially in our bond. You glow Elena. You bring out the light." He didn't wait for her response, he made her dance again.
She was rigid and stiff at first but as she thought over his words she allowed herself to become more fluid again. The light became brighter. It was unlike anything else Damon had ever seen. Or Stefan, Caroline, and Darien who were now watching from the ground in awe.
And if you were to ask me After all that we've been through Still believe in magic Oh yes I do Oh yes I do Yes I do Oh yes I do Of course I do
Damon finished singing to her and they stopped rocking back and forth. "I guess I can learn to live with it." Admitted Elena staring up at him. "I don't want to stress anyone out but I'll have to ask for help."
Damon pushed her hair out of her eyes. "I like it" he kissed the center of her forehead. "Every vampire has something unique about them. I have an affinity for crows. Stefan has his bloodlust. Caroline her quick learning. Katherine her manipulation and tolerance to vervein. You Elena Salvatore, you glow. And it is so beautiful." Elena blushed a little and the light flickered in response.
"I love you Damon." She stood on her tip toes and kissed him, totally unaware of her surroundings as the blood bond pounded in her ears.
Down below Darien, Caroline, and Stefan gasped. "She didn't kill her." Said Darien, having just had Stefan explain about his mother. "She's awoken her. And this could be very bad. You will have many enemies." But Caroline and Stefan could barely register the warning. Not only were they floored by the fact their friend was emitting light like a glow worm, but in their bliss it seemed like neither Damon nor Elena realized, they were floating at least a metre in the air.
