Chapter 26: First Push

Allen sighed loudly, pulling Kanda closer into his side. He ran his fingers slowly through her hair, brushing them along the back of her neck. His chest rose and fell slowly, his eyes closed to the thick darkness. "What are we going to do today?" he murmured softly, running his fingers up and down her bare spine.

"Nothing," Kanda replied, pressing closer to Allen, rubbing her cheek slowly across his chest, her fingers tracings swirling patterns similar to the ones on her kimono into his skin. Her voice was soft and sleepy and sweet, ready to drop back into sleep despite the early morning hour. It was too early for them or anyone else to be up, but it was simultaneously getting to that hour where people would start popping out of bed like Poptarts.

Smirking, Allen turned so they were facing each other, leaning forward to press butterfly kisses across her face; her cheeks, her forehead, her lips, her nose, even her eyes. "Why? You've been stuck in this room for the past month. Don't you want to get out? We could go for a walk, or maybe go shopping. We need to get some toys for these two, don't we?" He ran his hand lovingly over her greatly protruding stomach, pretending that he could feel their fluttering heartbeat through the muscle of her abdomen.

Kanda rolled her eyes, covering his hand with hers. "We can make toys," she suggested. She really did not want to leave the sanctuary of their bedroom. She might stumble across another scarring scene. She didn't think she could take anymore trauma. It might send her into premature labor.

'I can't believe I just thought that,' she spat at herself, wishing she could punch herself in the face without making her idiot boyfriend worried, which incidentally was impossible, 'That was not even funny.'

"But wouldn't it be cool for them to have a toy from China? I know I always loved playing with Chinese toys whenever Mana and I, and even with Cross, ended up here," Allen coaxed, grinning at her.

"Moyashi," Kanda said warningly, dragging out the vowels to three times their length. She leveled a steady glare on him. "They don't need special toys. They can deal with teddy bears and whatever else we can scrounge up. I'm sure Lenalee and the others will have bought enough gifts for the twins for the rest of their lives anyway. I don't want to go anywhere today."

Allen was opening his mouth to reply with something that would ultimately lead them to an overly loud brawl in which Kanda would get pissed because he wouldn't go all out, but he stopped, his eyes going wide. He stared down at his hand, a look of astonishment and wonder taking over his features.

Kanda stared at their fingers laced together over her stomach. While he had felt the push of the twins' feet on his hand, she had felt the movement from the inside. They had only started moving a week before, but she had still yet to get used to it. The movement was novel and distracting and magical. She didn't use those words lightly either. If she were being honest with herself, she'd have to say that this was the first time she'd ever used the words.

"Was that the twins?" Allen asked breathlessly, amazement coloring his voice bright, beautiful colors.

Not needing any words, Kanda nodded. She pulled his other hand forward, placing it over the spot where she knew was directly over one of the twins. Just as she'd expected, that one pushed out, attempting to push Allen's hand off of her stomach.

"Oh my word," Allen whispered, a smile pulling apart his lips in unparalleled happiness, "I don't even know what to say."

"Then don't say anything, baka," Kanda told him, not unkindly, "Just enjoy the moment for what it is. Sometimes less is more."

Grinning, Allen obligingly shut his mouth, taking great joy in feeling up her stomach. She shook her head, laughing to herself, but allowed him to do as he liked.

"How many weeks are we at now?" he suddenly asked, looking up at her with happy, loving eyes.

"Mm, last time Cross told me was about a week ago, when they started moving, so 20 now. Five months. Only four months left," Kanda told him, a sudden wave of nervousness washing over her. In only four more short months, she would be a father, or mother or whatever she was, and so would Allen. They'd be parents. They'd be responsible for the twins for the next eighteen years and probably many years after that. The prospect was daunting and terrifying, but not all together unwanted. Not now at least.

"Oh my god, we're going to be parents," Allen mumbled in the same horrified way Kanda felt, staring down at her stomach. When he looked back up at her, his eyes were filled with excitement though. "Parents! Can you believe it?"

"Truthfully?" Kanda asked, "No."

"Geez, what are we going to do? Two babies. I can barely take care of Timcanpy, but I'm not too sure if he counts."

Kanda flicked his ear, leveling a glare at him. "Don't compare our children to that flying golden black hole of a creature. They will be nothing like him. They're not pets like he is."

"I know that," Allen defended himself immediately, rubbing at his red, stinging ear, "but do you really think that it's going to be much different for a while? I mean, that, and they're both going to be black holes also because of their innocence."

Kanda groaned, burying her face in the pillow. "Don't remind me. Feeding the three of you is going to be such a hassle."

Allen frowned. "Kanda, you don't even cook. Jerry cooks."

"Yes, but I still go to the cafeteria with you more often than not, don't I?" She didn't wait for his answer. "Exactly. You're logic is invalid, please kindly shut the fuck up."

"I'm not sure how I feel about finally hearing you use the word please, but in that context. I'm torn between excited and wanting to shake my head."

"Oh, just shut up already," Kanda spat at him, pulling him into a kiss before he could shove his foot any further down his throat.

Allen rolled towards her so that he could effectively straddle her legs. They were just winding up for another round, moans ready to claw up their throats, when a quiet, yet seemingly loud, series of knocks sounded at their door.

Snarling viciously, Kanda rolled out of the bed. "I swear to god, if this is not important, I'm going to strangle the person at the door." She flung the door open.

Of course, the one who ended up being at the door was their dear Lenalee. "I hope you're not planning on killing me. I think I might have something to say about that." She smiled widely, raising her dark eyebrows at two of her best friends.

Rolling her eyes, Kanda followed the roll, turning back towards the bed. She flopped back down, throwing the blanket over Allen who'd been making a valiant attempt to cover himself. Somehow -Kanda didn't know how- he still possessed some sense of dignity. "What do you want?" she grumbled, throwing her head back against Allen's shoulder and letting her eyes fall shut.

"Well, first of all, you need to get dressed," Lenalee said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her. She grinned, looking around at the room. Over the time that they'd been there, Lenalee had yet to enter their domain. They were pretty sure she was more than hesitant to enter mainly because of what a disaster zone it was.

"And what's after that?" Kanda asked, rolling into Allen's side, perfectly ready to deny Lenalee of whatever she was planning for the two of them. She had no plans for leaving that room, and if she had anything to say about it, neither was Allen.

"Yoga on the roof," Lenalee told her, bending and picking up a pile of clothes, throwing them at the basket in the corner. She missed, but hit its side anyway. "Lovino is going to join us today. She wants to start early so it becomes more of a habit before the baby actually begins to show."

"Who would want to do that? She's just going to get herself all riled up and nervous, and it's not going to help her at all," Kanda told her, pulling the covers over her head so Lenalee might possibly get the hint about her unavailability.

She had no such luck.

"That's what I told him, but he's not listening. Whatever. He'll figure it out eventually. You'll have to help him with that, you know?" Lenalee said, stepping over the clutter and standing at the end of Allen and Kanda's bed, "Now get up. I want to get to her before she starts throwing up for the day." Kanda stayed silent. "I will tear these covers off of you, pull them into the hall and leave the door open for everyone to see your naked glory."

"I'm up, I'm up," Kanda growled, getting to her feet. She didn't bother covering herself up. Lenalee had already seen her naked on multiple occasions, so she didn't see how it mattered at this point. The blanket stayed draped across Allen's lap. She didn't know how happy she would be if Lenalee got a sneak peek at what lay beneath his clothing.

She moved to their dresser, rummaging through the sparse amount of clean clothing that claimed the space. Pursing her lips, she stared down at them. "Whatever," she muttered, and pulled on the first thing that looked remotely like workout clothing. "Moyashi, I'll be back in an hour or so. Don't disappear in that time. I'm not done with you," she warned him before following Lenalee out the door.

"You know, you should probably start being a little nicer to him," Lenalee suggested, falling into step beside her as they climbed their way to the room, watching ahead while Kanda watched the stairs.

Since she'd become a woman, she'd become notorious for falling up stairs. It was not in any way pleasant.

Kanda raised an eyebrow at her, flicking her eyes to her for only a second before returning them to what they'd been previously doing. "Why would I ever want to do that? That means I actually have to work at being nice."

"Well, let's see, 1) because he's the father of your children, 2) because he's the only one who can put up with your attitude for a full day, 3) because you took his virginity, 4) because you two will definitely end up married," Lenalee said, ticking the items off on her fingers one by one, "and 5) because he's the father of your children." She grinned as she repeated her first reason, knowing she'd gotten the point across.

Kanda decided to ignore her. "Who ever said we were going to get married? It sure as hell wasn't me."

"I did."

"Well, we can't so it doesn't matter."

"You are such a pessimist, did you know that?"

"Yes, it's part of my charm. I thought you knew that."

It was Lenalee's turn to roll her eyes. They pushed out onto the room. Their mats were already rolled out, and Lovino sat on hers, attempting to do the breathing exercises she'd been instructed to do. "Whatever you say, but you should tell that to Allen. He's head-over-heels for you. Don't go crushing him."

"I'm not going to crush him," Kanda muttered irately. Really, what did these people have against her? They had such little faith in her.

"So, baby names, for the both of you," Lenalee said, plopping down on the mat in the middle, and grinned.

Kanda groaned, falling back onto her mat. This was going to be a long hour.

Haha! Ending the chapter right there! No clues to baby names just yet! I'm waiting until a certain conversation between a certain two thick headed people. I hope this wasn't too bad. I'll see y'all tomorrow.
