Maya woke up that morning very confused. She had this strange feeling that something was off.

After rubbing her eyes and sitting up more, she remembered; Miles was no longer her boyfriend, and she kissed Zig. Twice.

It had been about a week since she and Miles had broken up, and they hadn't talked to each other since.

Maya groaned a little and hid her head in her pillow. She didn't really know how she felt. Yeah, she had only kissed Zig to get him to stay with her, but she didn't have to kiss him. Something came over her, and she wasn't really sure what it was.

Her phone vibrated, interrupting her thoughts. It was a text from Katie that said "Hey, chicken little! Hope you're staying out of trouble, I'll be home before you know it!"

Maya gave a little squeal, her mood lightening. She couldn't wait to have her older sister back in the house. Katie would always help her when she was having problems and keep her company.

Maya heaved a sigh and got up, starting to get ready for school. She pulled on a pink tank top and white jeans, curling her hair and slipping her glasses on. She had always worn her contacts for Miles, anyway.

She came downstairs to see Zig sitting at the table, munching on cereal. Maya made a face. "Ew. You eat like you haven't been fed in weeks."

Zig shrugged, his mouth full of cereal. Maya's eyes traveled to the empty milk carton on the table, and groaned slightly. "You chugged all my milk again!"

Zig scoffed. "So? You eat like a bird."

Maya's mouth fell open as she laughed. She marched over to grab the carton, throwing it out. "At least birds won't raid your whole fridge like Tristan on a Netflix binge watch."

Zig laughed slightly. "A Netflix binge watch?"

Maya tilted her head to the side. "It's basically where Tristan feels really sorry for himself, so he drowns his sadness in food and free TV."

Zig shook his head. "Oh and by the way, your scolding paid off."

Maya was confused. "Huh?"

Zig shrugged. "Well, you pestered me enough times about school that I actually started doing my homework."

Maya's face lit up as she smiled. "Really? That's great! I'm proud of you, Zig."

Zig looked down, smiling. "Well, it was only because of you."

Maya just shook her head, still smiling. "Well keep it up, and you'll make the honor roll next!"

Zig scoffed. "Yeah, after Grace joins choir."

Maya raised her eyebrows and laughed. "Hey it could happen!"

"Right. And while we're at it, I'll join the basketball team."

Maya tilted her head to the side. "Why don't you play any sports again?"

"Not my thing." Zig shrugged, taking a bite of cereal.

"Oh, come on. I've never met a guy who hates basketball. Even Tristan is on the team!"

"I'm just not into a bunch of morons chasing a ball around for amusement."

Maya blinked. "Hey, my boyf…ex boyfriend happens to be on that team!"

"So?" Zig rolled his eyes.

"And he's very intelligent."

Zig stabbed his cereal with his spoon. "I'm just not into the whole school spirit thing."

Maya's lips curled upwards. "Weren't you the team mascot last year?"

Zig glared. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Oh, you totally do." Maya walked over to the water pitcher, drinking from it.

Zig raised his eyebrows.

"What? You do it all the time."

Zig paused. "Well yeah but…you said you didn't want to share germs or anything."

Maya gave him a look. "Zig, I just kissed you last night, I think I can share some water with you."

Zig's expression became hopeful. "Wait, you remember?"

"Of course I do, I was there."

"…And you're okay with that? You're not going to avoid me and pretend it didn't happen?"

Maya laughed lightly. "No."

Zig got up to join her at the sink, washing his bowl. He looked sideways at her. "You seem pretty casual talking about it."

Maya laughed nervously. "I guess."

"Is that a good thing?"

Maya was silent, as she bit her nails.

Zig turned the sink off, turning to her. Maya realized how close he was standing and felt strange. "Uhm. Hi."

"Hey." Zig smirked. "You didn't answer my question."

"I don't know, okay?"

Zig raised his eyebrows. "You seemed to enjoy the kiss."

"Uhm. Well. I didn't not enjoy it, but…" Maya looked down. "Look, I just need time to think."

"About what?" Zig moved closer to her. Maya backed away against the counter.

"I-I just broke up with Miles…" Maya put a hand on Zig's chest and lightly pushed him away. "I need a bit of time to get over him."

Zig nodded, looking a bit downcast. "That's…fine."

Maya took a breath. "So, meet you at school?"

Zig nodded. "Of course."

As Maya's mom drove her to school, Maya kept her phone out. She had already received three texts and four calls from Miles since their breakup. She resisted the temptation to pick up as her phone buzzed again.

She looked down at the screen. It said, "Please forgive me. I miss you."

Maya clicked the "decline" button before placing her phone in her bag. There was no way she was going to cave for Miles this time.

Maya entered school to see Zoe and Tristan on their usual commons bench. She walked over to them. "Hey guys!"

Tristan grinned. "Hey Maymat! Wasn't the panorama just amazing?"

Maya nodded and smiled back. "It really was. I'm glad everything worked out."

Zoe laughed. "When you weren't running around looking for Zig…what was going on with him?"

Tristan waved a hand. "Guy is cray cray, who knows? He had like, a bag of weed in his backpack."

Maya's eyes widened and she nudged Tristan. "Tris!"

"What?"

"Shut up!" Maya glanced around. "Everyone here already things the remedial rooms are scum."

"You mean the rubber room?" asked Zoe, crossing her arms.

Maya sighed. "No. The remedial room."

"Oh god, they're brainwashing her!" Zoe joked. She and Tristan laughed, as Maya smiled slightly.

Zoe lowered her voice. "What was Zig doing with a bag of drugs?"

Maya heaved a sigh. "It's…complicated. The problem's all over now though."

Zoe raised her hands up. "I don't want to know."

Tristan changed the subject, looking at Maya. "So…are you still not talking to Miles?"

Maya crossed her arms defiantly. "Is Miles still accusing me of being a slut?"

Zoe frowned. "He didn't exactly say that."

"He hinted it" Maya shot back.

Tristan sighed. "Maya, he feels really bad."

"And guilty!" Zoe added.

"And remorseful!" Tristan cried.

"And mean."

"And downright rude."

Maya held a hand up. "Guys, is he saying you to say this stuff?"

Zoe laughed. "Actually no." She looked over Maya's shoulder. "Hey look, it's Miles!"

Tristan's eyes widened. "Hollingsworth at 12 o'clock!"

Maya frowned. "Oh no, please hide me?"

"Too late!" Zoe giggled and put her hand on Maya's back, giving her a forceful shove towards Miles.

Maya crashed into Miles' chest, startling the both of them. She quickly pulled away to see Miles looking at her with a shocked expression.

"S-sorry!" Maya cried.

Miles chuckled a little, still looking surprised. "I forgot how clumsy you were."

Maya's face flushed a light pink. Miles looked good. Like, really good. Happier too. He looked a lot more at ease than he had in a long time.

Probably because he's away from me, she thought.

She suddenly noticed him holding flowers and raised an eyebrow. "What girl are you trying to charm today?"

"You, actually" Miles smiled and held the flowers up to her. "They're for your performance."

Maya took the flowers, frowning. "Huh?"

A small smirk crept up on Miles' face. "You know, the one you did last night."

Maya blushed more, looking down. "Oh. Uhm. Right. Thank you."

She looked at the flowers. They were roses, her favorites. She let out a giggle. "They're beautiful."

She saw Miles open his mouth as if he was going to say something, but closed it again. "I'm glad you liked them."

Maya smiled. "You actually saw my performance?"

Miles laughed a little. "In between helping Chewy."

Maya was confused. "What was wrong with him?"

"He passed out in the middle of the show."

Maya's eyes widened. "I hope he was okay!" She paused. "Hey, wasn't he the one who kissed your sister?"

Miles nodded. "And I've forgiven him and let him pursue her, because and only because he's Chewy."

Maya giggled a little. She looked into his eyes, her heart speeding a little as she saw their deep green warmth. "Well uh, thank you for these. I'm sure I can fit them in my locker for the day."

Miles gave her yet another smile, causing Maya's heart to sink even more. "Hey Maya, do you want to have lunch with me today? I could take you out somewhere."

Maya sighed and gave him a glare. Seeing the look on her face, Miles quickly backpedaled. "Or we could just eat in the cafeteria."

Maya bit her lip. "I'm uh, helping Zig. He has a lot of schoolwork."

"Oh yeah, how is he doing?" Miles asked.

"Bad" Maya said, with a laugh. "If he misses one more class, he'll be off the roster. We're both waiting for the results of his last grades."

Miles frowned. "Does he even know what that means?"

"Probably not!"

"Well, maybe you should tell Zig that if he's off the roster, he can't sit down for the finals."

"So?"

Miles sighed. "Which means he'll probably end up repeating."

Maya's mouth fell open. "I didn't even think of that! You're right." She looked up at him. "You know, you're really sweet sometimes."

Miles looked taken aback. "I am?"

"Yes." Maya laughed. "You didn't have to say that just to help Zig out."

Miles shrugged. "I'm trying to be a better person."

Maya smiled brightly. "That's great."

"Maya!" a voice announced.

Maya turned around to see Zig leaving the remedial room. "Zig? Why do you look happy?"

"I've passed!" Zig announced.

Maya turned to Miles. "Could you hold these for a second?"

"Of course" Miles took Maya's flowers as she ran over to Zig, flinging her arms around his neck. "You passed!"

Zig spun her around a little, before putting her down and smiling. "You won't believe it, Ms. Grell actually passed me. She hates me, I don't even understand why!"

Maya giggled a little, letting go of him. "I may have had something to do with it."

Zig's eyes widened. "Seriously? What, did you bribe her or something?"

Maya shook her head. "No, I just told her what you were going through and how hard it would have been to keep up with your school work when you were under so much stress."

Zig shook his head. "Maya…I can't believe you'd do this all for me."

"Of course I would, you're my friend Zig! I've seen how you've been trying to get your life back on track and I'm proud. I care about you. I love you-"

Zig cut her off by cupping her face and pressing his lips to hers. Maya froze in shock, her brain seeming to slow down. After a moment, she jerked away.

"I have to go" Maya announced, not looking at Zig.

"But Maya…I just kissed you."

Maya sighed. "Don't you have to get to class?"

Knowing he would immediately oblige, Maya still felt horrible.

"Of course, anything" Zig announced. "See you ninth period?"

Maya nodded. "Yeah."

She quickly walked away from Zig, needing to get away from him as soon as possible.

Maya never actually ended up going to class. There was no way she was facing Zig after that, she wouldn't even know what to say to him.

She ended up cutting class with Grace at one of the tables outside.

"So, let me get this straight" Grace was saying. "You and Zigmund sucked face in front of the pretentious snob, and he got angry and left?"

"Well. Kinda." Maya hit Grace lightly. "We weren't sucking face!"

Grace scoffed. "True. Zig would love that too much."

"Grace!"

Grace smirked. "It was a one-sided face-sucking."

Maya put her head in her hands. Grace patted her head, but Maya knew she was still smirking.

Maya sighed unhappily. "And I don't know what to do!"

"Well, which idiot do you want to be with? I'd recommend rich kid, personally. He's the lesser of the two idiots."

Maya frowned. "But Zig…"

Grace shrugged. "Whatever, I'm not felling you how to feel. You seem stressed. I'd tell you to smoke some weed, but you're too much of a wimp for that."

Maya laughed slightly. "Yeah, probably." She looked sideways at Grace. "So, why wouldn't you recommend Zig?"

"Getting ideas, blondie?"

"No, no definitely not. Just, I'm curious."

Grace let out a breath. "Uh, because you live together. Wouldn't work."

Maya frowned, confused. She had never heard Grace stutter before. "We could keep it secret."

Grace hesitated. "But rich kid would get all whiny and jealous."

Maya's eyes narrowed. "Grace, is there something you aren't telling me about Zig?"

"No." Grace examined a blue hair streak.

"Grace, come on."

Grace rolled her eyes. "Zig made me swear not to tell you. If he finds out I told you, I'll probably owe him my blood."

Maya shook her head. "No, don't worry. It's not your fault, it's his for keeping secrets from me."

Grace took a breath. "Okay, look Matlin. You know those rumors about you and Zig going at it together?"

Maya nodded. "Of course."

"Well, Zig started them."

Maya sat up. "What?!"

"Okay, he didn't start them. He actually told rich kid that you and him were doing shit behind his back."

Maya's mouth fell open. "Oh my god…"

Grace sat back and groaned. "I wasn't even supposed to tell that."

Maya bit her lip, shaking her head. "Miles was accusing me of having sex with Zig. I knew it was weird that his suspicions seemed to come out of nowhere. Especially after he said he trusted me…"

"Point is, Zig lied."

Maya frowned. "I feel so bad for yelling at Miles. He had every right to be suspicious after that…I can't believe Zig, what the hell?"

Grace sighed. "Look, we both know he's not a bad guy."

Maya crossed her arms. "But that's a horrible thing to do!"

"Look Matlin, he wants to be with you!" Grace announced. "You blind or something?"

"But I don't want to be with him!"

Grace leaned closer. "So freaking tell him!"

Maya sighed. "You're right…I need to tell him. I can't keep him happy anymore."
