Chapter 7: A prank, a teacher and old people
"Okay how awesome am I?" Stella asked as she stirred the cauldron one last time.
"Very." Sirius said leaning across her to looks at the content. It was some kind of fluid blue liquid that shimmered between sapphire and indigo. Stella sniffed it, it smelt like old parchment and that flowery perfume your grandmother wears or that warm baking smell old people just seem to have.
"I think this is the only potion that I don't hate the smell of." Stella said. James and Sirius looked like they were trying to get high off the smell. Peter already looked intoxicated and Remus just stared at it. For a whole week they had been brewing a potion in secret, well in the boy's dormitory, in broad daylight but still in secret.
"Finally it's done." James said.
"How long do you reckon it will take to pour it on the Slytherin's stuff?" Sirius asked still sniffing at the potion. Remus pulled out a drawing and showed it to the others.
"I drew the table, based on ours instead but still the same measure." He explained. It was a fantastic drawing with measurements and labels.
"Wow Remus that's a great picture." Peter said. Remus tried not to look too smug.
"It's not that amazing." He said modestly. Stella pulled it from his hands.
"It's awesome Remus." She said. "You could be like an architect or an artist." Remus blushed.
"I don't think I'm that good." He said honestly. Sirius leaned over Stella, casually placing on elbow on her leg to prop himself up, to look at Remus' drawing.
"This is like the best drawing ever." He said.
"Sirius get off my leg." Stella said sternly. Sirius grinned at her.
"Whatever you say." He said and he sat up again.
"Anyway." Remus said. "I've drawn it to a scale and then divided it by five." He pointed out each section. "And then I gave everyone a section." He said tapping on everyone's names.
"Why do I have such a big section?" Stella asked.
"Each section is the same size." Remus said.
"Ohhh." Stella said.
"Honestly it's like you think I can't do simple maths." Remus said sounding a little hurt.
"Nah I don't think James can do simple maths to be perfectly honest." Stella corrected.
"Hey!" James exclaimed.
"And besides." Stella continued as if nothing had happened. "I'm just saying each section looks fairly big." Remus scratched his head.
"Yes well there wasn't another way to divide it." He said eventually.
"Yes well now I'm stuck." Sirius said.
"On what?" Peter asked.
"How are we going to get the ageing potion on all the food?" He asked.
"Oh yeah, I don't think there's enough potion." James said.
"Relax I've thought it all out." Stella said. "Instead we just put it in the drink."
"But not everyone drinks." Peter pointed out. Stella gave him one of her manic grins.
"Exactly." She said. Then Sirius' eyes lit up like galleons.
"And the ones that don't drink will get blamed instead of us because they didn't drink." He said happily.
"Of course we're pranking the Slytherin's but they'll get blamed for it." James said. "It's like killing two birds with one stone."
"That's a bit harsh." Remus said, although there was a slight twinkle when he said it.
"Yes but would you rather get blamed for it?" Stella asked.
"No I wouldn't." He admitted.
"Oh I can't wait to see Snivellous' face when this happens." Sirius said gleefully.
"Maybe Lily will stop liking him." James said hopefully.
"I think that's a bit of a stretch." Stella said. James looked put out. The door slammed open.
"I thought I'd find you in here." Tina said casually strolling in.
"You know me so well; tell me Tina, what do you think of this ageing potion?" Stella asked.
"Hmm." Tina said sniffing the potion. "I think that the prank is going to go great."
"You think?" Stella asked.
"Yep." Tina said. "Thanks for warning me about it otherwise I would have asked what you'd on the day."
"No problem." Stella said. "Oh did you want something?" Tina looked at her for a moment and scratched her chin.
"Oh yeah Dumbledore was looking for you so I said I'd tell you to go to his office." She replied. Stella's stomach dropped and her smile froze.
"I swear I've done nothing wrong." Stella said. Remus shot her a worried glance. He must have guessed what it was about.
"Yeah." Tina said. "I said the same thing but he said you weren't in trouble. Oh wait no he wanted to talk to Remus as well." Stella and Remus didn't wait another second and sprinted out of the dormitory towards Dumbledore's office.
"What do you think got into those two?" Peter asked.
"With them I don't think I'll ever know." Sirius said shaking his head.
Stella and Remus practically came bursting through the office door and fell on top of each other.
"Hello." Dumbledore said as if that was a completely normal response to two people falling through a door.
"Hi Professor." They replied jumping up.
"Please have a seat." Dumbledore said indicating to two chairs.
"Thank you Sir." They said as they sat down.
"You wanted to talk Sir?" Stella asked a little nervously.
"Ah yes about the matter of your conditions." Dumbledore said. Both pre-teens practically jumped out of their skin.
"What the hell Sir?" Stella asked.
"Do you mind not mentioning them?" Remus asked more politely.
"Oh sorry, I didn't realise how touchy you were on the subject." Dumbledore said sounding very sorry. "However as I was saying, both of you seem to be aware of the other's condition."
"Uhhh." Stella supplied helpfully.
"I don't think this is necessary to ask but I think both of you would rather no other students know. Am I correct?" Dumbledore asked.
"Yes." Remus said quietly.
"Well then I think we can agree not to mention each other's predicaments to others." Dumbledore said.
"We were going to do that anyway." Stella said grumpily.
"Also Stella I would like to remind you that my door is always open if you have any problems." Dumbledore said. "You as well Remus."
"Thanks Sir." They said practically sprinting out of the office.
"No matter how many times he says it I am not going to talk to him." Stella muttered to Remus.
"Why?" Remus asked. "He's just concerned."
"So?" Stella asked. "I don't want to share all the time. Gryffindor." She added.
"Neither do I but I still think it's nice of him." Remus said.
"Shh." Stella said pointing to where they were, already back at the dormitory.
"Oh right." Remus said.
They slipped quietly down to the Great Hall, so early Stella thought it was a miracle they were even awake. The potion made it harder to move around. As they slipped inside, they saw the tables lined with food and drink in preparation for breakfast.
"I forget, which one is the Slytherin table again?" Peter asked. Remus pointed to the table on the far left.
"Alright everyone move out." Sirius muttered. They all moved as fast as they could; pouring a bit of potion inside each drink. Just enough to make people age obviously. Once they were done they sprinted out of the hall and back up to the dorm.
"I think that is one of the longest times I have been quiet." James said breathing heavily.
"Except for when you sleep." Stella pointed out.
"Nah even in his sleep he isn't quiet." Sirius panted.
"How long do you suppose we should wait this time?" Remus asked.
"Oh about an hour." Stella said. "It gives us deniability."
"See ya." Sirius said, waving as she left for her own dormitory. Tina was lying on her bed waiting expectantly. Stella gave her he thumbs up and Tina grinned and left. Stella sat patiently on the end of her bed for half an hour until Tina came back.
"I can't wait to see the guy's faces." She said joining Stella on her bed.
"Neither can I." Stella said excitedly. They waited a little while longer and then left to meet the boys.
"Good morning girls." Sirius said.
"Hi." They replied. They all walked down to the hall. Before they entered they could already hear shouts and accusations flying through the hall.
"My, my it seems we waited too long." Stella said.
"Let's go see the carnage." Tina said. They pushed open the door and found every student in the room with an appearance of a fifty year old. The boy's jaws dropped while Tina and Stella high fived. The entire hall turned towards them.
"Was it them?" A student yelled.
"No those boys looked completely shocked." Another student argued.
"But those two girls look as if they're about to laugh their heads off." Another added. An angry buzz passed over the students.
"Oh shit." Tina said.
"We didn't plan for this part." Stella said. "Time to wing it."
"No need girls, over here." A voice said. The girls turned to see Torvin standing holding a side door open. They sprinted over and dived inside.
"Thank-you so much." Tina gasped.
"No problem." Torvin said with a bemused look. "Excellent prank by the way."
"Cheers Professor." Stella said with a grin. She might find Torvin a little creepy but she had just saved both of them from an angry mob of students.
"I mean did you see their faces?" Torvin asked. They all started laughing. Most of the boys had a beard or stubble growing. A few people had grey hair or some wrinkles. Quite a few people had grown taller and it was just too funny. Imagine someone that you know turning into an old man or woman. After a few more minutes they stepped out of the closet.
"Whew, I think we just missed everyone." Stella said with a sigh of relief.
"Oh everyone Stella?" Someone said. Stella, Tina and Torvin whipped round to see the boys looking at them.
"Oh um we can explain." Stella began wildly.
"There is no need." Peter said.
"Yes we understand completely." Remus said.
"I can't believe we didn't realise before." James said.
"But now we understand everything." Sirius said. Stella gulped. She and Tina had agreed that when the boys and Stella pranked the Slytherins, Tina would go down and put ageing potion in everyone's drink therefore making everyone old and much funnier for Stella and Tina who rarely did pranks together.
"You do?" Tina asked.
"Yeah." James said with a huge smile. "You two wanted to bond over a massive prank and didn't include us because you didn't want us to get in trouble."
"Well done guys." Sirius said proudly. Stella and Tina exchanged glances. They decided to go along with it.
"Sure." Stella said.
"How did you guess?" Tina said.
"We just know you that well." Remus said.
"Of course you do." Stella said.
