Chapter 26

We grabbed our bags for trauma and jumped into the ambulance. I could feel my heart racing. It was like déjà vu except instead of Edward across from me it was a terrified intern. I focused my attention on briefing her and preparing her for what was to come.

"Ok, uh, Stephanie, we are going to be going into a chaotic environment. There will be people there who will be in shock and won't know they are injured. Its your job to be the voice of reason. You need to keep your cool, focus on the things you were taught to do in a trauma situation. I will try to stay close by if not with you so that if you need something or a situation gets out of control I can help you." She nods silently. "Take a deep breath." She does. "Now, harness that fear into fierceness because were here," and with that the doors to the ambulance swung open. I jumped down and took in my surroundings. I inhaled sharply. No matter how many times I did this job I was always surprised and never got used to the destruction that can be caused, whether human or by nature.

There was a huge hole in front of us at least fifteen maybe twenty feet in diameter. There were water pipes still flowing into the huge gap. The bus accident a block down from the sinkhole; there were cars still teetering on the edge. There was different windbreaker jackets on each labeled with its perspective owners to make finding each other easier.

"Dr. Swan, I don't know if I can do this." Stephanie looked at me her face washed-out from fear.

"Ok, look you can do this. Come with me and follow my lead, once you get the hang of it you're on your own." I started to head towards a police officer and see where help was most needed when a little girl maybe seven or eight runs up to me her muddy face tear stained.

"Help me! Please! Help me, my mom she's stuck and I can't get her out." Sheer terror and helplessness was on her face. I grabbed a radio from the rig and tuned into the channel everyone was on.

"OK, lets go." We made our way around the sinkhole, and into a darkened alley. There was a hole that went into the place where the bus accident was. I heard cracking like thunder underneath us and questioned how stable the ground was.

"Over here, over here!" She motioned to an overturned SUV. I saw a woman's face pressed against the glass of the driver's side window.

"Stephanie I need you to contact the paramedics on the radio. Tell them that we have a female unconscious, trapped in an SUV near the edge of the sinkhole. We need a backboard and some extra hands." I pulled her close so the little girl wouldn't hear. "Tell them about the cracking under us and ask how stable the ground is here." She nodded and grabbed the radio. "OK, honey. What did you say your name was?"

"Lilly." She started to cry. I shushed her. "Is my mommy going to be ok?"

"Yes, honey I'm, going to do all I can to help her ok?" Stephanie came back from contacting help with a grim look on her face.

"They said we need to stabilize her and get out of here fast. The sinkhole could be widening in diameter. There is no way for them to tell how big this thing is going to be."

"I'm not leaving this woman. Radio them back I am going to attempt to extract her and want some reinforcements here pronto. If they don't want to risk losing two people instead of one they better hurry." She nodded, and started to call them up on the radio. "Stephanie I want you to go and take Lilly here and go get her set up on an ambulance and when her mom is done they can ride in the rig together to the hospital."

"No! I don't want to leave her!" She started sobbing harder. Suddenly there was a slight shift of the ground and some more cracking. Lilly yelped. "Ok, I'll go as long as you promise to save her."

I bent down to her level. "Lilly, I am going to do all that I can. Whats your moms name?

"Nora."

"Ok, you just stay with Stephanie here and you'll be ok." I stood up and looked at Stephanie. "Go, quickly no stops get help her fast, and if God forbid anything should happen tell Edward I'm sorry, and I love him." She nodded lips pursed. "Go!"

As they made their way to safety, I turned to the task ahead. The door was folded in so opening it looked impossible, but the sunroof was open so I broke the remaining glass so I could climb inside.

"Nora? Nora, can you hear me?" She started grunting. "I need you to stay still. You've been in an accident and you may have a spinal or neck injury, and I need to stabilize you're neck."

"Wh-what about Li-lilly." She stammered.

"She is safe, I have someone taking her to an ambulance now. Can you tell me anywhere it hurts?"

"My right leg kinda feels numb."

"OK, good anywhere else?" I grabbed the neck collar from my bag and placed it around her neck. Before she could answer the car started shifting. She cried out. Crap! "Ok, things are going to be moving fast here. I have to move you without a backboard, actually I saw a door outside I can place you on after your out."

"OK, ok just get me out." She was starting to have labored breathing. She needed out and her injuries assessed. I climbed out and found the door and some cord sticking out of some dirt and a couple long pieces of wood. I make my way over to the door place the long pieces on the side of the doors so I had enough over hang on the top to grab onto like handles, and wrapped the cord around the diameter to secure it.

"Are you still…..still there?" She asked. I could tell I was losing her.

"Ya, stay with me Nora, I'm coming." I made my way back into the car and find my footing to pull her out. "Ok, Nora on the count of three. One, two, three." I pull her up and she screams out. After I free her feet I angle her out the sunroof, and onto the makeshift back board.

"My leg! My leg somethings wrong." She was right, it was losing color.

"I think it's your hip it's out of place. I'm going to have to set it so I can restore blood flow or you can lose your leg."

"What?"

"Ok, here it comes one, two," I pop it back in and she yells out. "Three." The cracking starts again. "OK, were going to go and it won't be a smooth ride. Are you ready Nora?" She doesn't answer, I curse under my breath. I can hear help coming but too far away to wait. The grounds not stable here. I lift the handles and drag the door back down the darkened alley and meet them at the end of it. Just then we hear a loud crashing. The one paramedic lifts the other end of the door and we swiftly get out of there to a waiting ambulance with her daughter inside.

I motion for Stephanie to join me and we catch a ride to the hospital with her.

"Are you ok, Dr. Swan? You're bleeding?" Stephanie asked.
