Author's Notes: Okay, final chapter of the Breach story arc. As mentioned in the last chapter, the adventures of David, Jack, Bomber, Slapstick, and Zoe will be continued over in "War of Angels: Collision". With the exception of the small arc that will come up that will involve preparing a rescue mission of sorts (probably one or two chapters because the rest will be covered in Collision). I know I originally planned on putting everything in this fic, but I have separate stuff planned that I already have written for the main D&I fic and I didn't want to put that on hold while trying to throw the JLU angle into this. Also, there were some readers who didn't want the JLU arc entangled in this, so I decided best to break it off into its own side-fic. That way, you can read one and not have to deal with the other, but not really miss out on anything.
Also, again, I want to address comments from some people who didn't like how I portrayed the Justice League Unlimited characters. First off, I'm only going by how they were portrayed in the animated series, not the comics. Someone told me that I portrayed CADMUS as reckless and blundering. Well...I got news for you...certain people at CADMUS were idiots who had no idea that their actions were endangering the so called world they were claiming to protect (*cough*Eiling*cough*) and deciding to nuke a volcanic erupting island with a Kryptonite enhanced warhead to, and I quote, "take out three birds with one stone", without realizing that if it hit the volcano it would do more than just wipe out the island especially if the volcano was sitting on a fault line. Certain people were greedy and opportunistic bastards (*cough*Tala*cough*Lex Luthor*cough*). One person in CADMUS was just a sick and sadistic bastard who liked fucking with his subject's heads and enjoyed torturing them (*cough*Doctor Moon*cough*). And one person was blind as a fucking bat or just didn't care what they did because they felt the ends justified the means (*cough*Amanda Waller*cough*). Truth be told, there was only one idiot in CADMUS who actually bought the BS Waller fed him (*Cough*Emil Hamilton*cough*) and even he seemed to have second thoughts when all was said and done.
But you can all relax. After this chapter, we will be resuming with the regular Aberrrant and Incredible characters. A certain displaced DC character may show up briefly (since he's in a coma), and there will be some side interrogation scenes...BUT I want to move on to the upcoming "Gabriel Ascendant" and the whole Teragen/Church of Michael conflict coming down the pipe (oh shit...I shouldn't have mentioned anything...SPOILERS!...oops)
Oh,and WARNING: Some character deaths and one car death coming up.

Research Lab 3
David stared at the half dozen holographic windows floating around him as they flashed various bits of data and rubbed his eyes in irritation. It had been a few weeks since the attack by Mitchell Carter and, despite his last couple weeks of research, David was no closer to figuring out the mystery behind the aging billionaire industrialist that had manage to bypass his securities and beat him and Jake to a pulp. When questioned by Dicker, Carter has some sort of seizure and was now in a coma.
And in the three weeks of investigating, I'm no closer to unraveling this mystery. David tried not to let the thought depress him too much. He remembered what Carter had said to him when they fought.
"Oh, it must really pain you. You have so many enemies and that remarkable brain with those augmented abilities of yours remembers all of them and what you did to deal with them. But I'm a mystery to you, aren't I? And that's what's really eating you, isn't it?"
Oh yeah, David thought to himself, it is eating at me...but these quantum fissures you pointed me at are eating at me even more.
David still had a hard time believing that Carter was some sort of time traveler, but everything seemed to point in that direction. Even analyzing the "footage" he saw of an unhinged and bloody version of himself incinerating Washington DC came back with inconclusive results. He wanted to dismiss it as something fabricated, but something kept telling David that what he saw was real.
This is crazy, this never happened but that's...that's actually me. This is not some complex 3D generated movie...that was really me blowing Washington DC to hell. And what the hell was this CADMUS he mentioned? Some sort of new quasi-cabal hiding within the government...shit, I hope not...we got too many of those already. We don't need any more shadowy agencies.
He happened to glance at his watch and saw the time.
Hmm...it's fifteen after nine. Zoe should be back from the Brewhouse by now with a couple mochas.
"Hey, Flynn, you busy?" someone asked, breaking David out of his thoughts. David looked up and saw Damon Best approaching him. "I was wondering if we could talk."
With a slight wave of his hand, most of the floating video displays vanished except for one displaying satellite data. "Of course, Damon," David replied, giving the black man a genuine smile as he shook his hand. "Is this about the Bio-Sphere contract for Sefton Salvaging, or is it something else?"
"It's about Violet," Damon replied. "I've been worried about her since," he paused for a moment as he hesitated, "you know...with her being shot and all."
"I think everyone is worried about her, Damon," David said. "But she seems to be doing okay."
"Have you talked to her lately?"
"More or less every day, but I don't make it my business to butt into her private affairs. Why do you ask?"
"Well, I know that you used some sort of experimental procedure to save her life, but everyone seems to be quiet about it."
"That's no secret. Yes, I did access some experimental treatment for her, but, out of respect for her privacy, and the fact that I don't want her family to beat the shit out of me more than they have, I can't tell you what was done. If you wanna' know, ask her."
Damon looked around for a couple seconds before lowering his voice so others couldn't overhear. "I did."
"And what did she tell you?"
"That it wasn't my business."
David was about to tell Damon that it really wasn't his business and to drop it, but he stopped as he studied the black man standing in front of him. While David didn't consider the man a friend, Damon was willing to give him the benefit of a doubt instead of writing him off as "Syndrome 2.0" like Dash and Mrs. Parr had. Even Bob Parr and Lucius Best had some reservations about him while Violet...well...David didn't feel like thinking about that particular subject. His conversation with Jack Parr revealed too much of his own personal feelings about Violet.
I just hope that little bastard is happy with his game console and will keep silent about that topic.
After a couple more seconds, he finally spoke. "Okay, Damon, tell me what's really bothering you."
"Honestly?"
"Honestly."
Damon let out a sigh, his shoulders slumping a little. "It's you. Look, don't take this the wrong way, but most of the old guard like the Parrs, my uncle Lucius, and Penny look at you and think you might be an enemy. I don't think you are, but I know that you have your own agenda. I'm just trying to figure out if that makes you one of the good guys or the bad guys. It's no secret you distrust Utopia and the US government, but I just want to know what your endgame is. Whatever tech you used to save her...that's advanced shit. I followed her a couple days ago when she was doing her morning run and she's doing things that she was never physically capable of before."
"If you're asking me if I was experimenting on her, the answer is 'hell no'. What was done to her was out of desperation and, ultimately, not my call to make." David kept his tone even, but that didn't keep the mental image of Violet dying in a hospital bed from flashing through his head. "This is where I would tell you to drop it and move on, but I'm not going to. You knew her longer than I did, correct?"
"Since we were kids," Damon replied.
"Well, Damon, believe me when I say that I consider Violet a close friend, almost like a sister." Then a smile crept across his face. "An older sister who can get away with smacking the back of my head when I do something stupid like...oh...I don't know...create a legion of killer robots that look like Paris Hilton."
Damon blinked at that last comment in confusion. "Wait...what?"
David laughed and clapped his hands once and pointed at Damon. "Gotcha!" he said. "Damn, you really should see the look on your face." Then his expression faded a little, becoming more serious. "But seriously, I do care about Violet and I was desperate to do anything to save her when she got shot. But like I said, it wasn't my call to make, it was her parents. I gave them the option of what could be done to save her."
"And, let me guess," Damon said, "they took it but felt it was making a proverbial deal with the devil, right?"
"No." This time there was no humor in David's voice. Instead, Damon could hear a hint of bitterness in it. "Mrs. Parr pretty much said 'No' and slapped me in the face." He gave tiny sarcastic chuckle and shook his head. "I wanted to save Violet's life, and her bitch of a mother didn't want me to do it."
"But you went ahead and did it anyway."
"No, Damon," David said. "I didn't. Maybe I should have right off the bat, and I probably would have, but someone else made that call. In the end, it was probably a good thing. Because if Violet had died, maybe I would have become the monster that some people fear is lurking under the surface."
Damon stood there silently for a moment as he pondered David's words. "Do I want to even know what you meant by that?" he finally asked.
David shook his head. "No, you don't," he replied, a haunted look in his eyes. "Let's just say that I was about to have something done that even Buddy Pine wouldn't do." Then he gave Damon a weak smile. "Funny when you think about it...there are so many ways a man can become a monster when he's not even trying to be one."
Damon was about to say something when the holographic window floating in front of David suddenly flashed blue and a wave of data surged across it.
"Holy shit," David muttered as he summoned a few more windows that began to display various bits of data.
"What is it?" Damon asked. He looked at one of the windows and identified some of the readings. "Are those quantum power signatures?"
"Yeah," David frowned as he analyzed the data. "Three massive quantum signatures literally happening all at once around town."
"Must be three powerful novas to kick out readings like that."
"No," David said. He tapped a couple keys on a holographic keyboard that appeared near his right hand and then his eyes widened in realization as he identified one of the locations of one of the quantum surges. "Oh shit, Zoe!"
"What is it?"
"One of those locations was right outside The Brewhouse." He mentally dialed Zoe's number and his fears were confirmed when he was informed that she was unavailable. A mental link to a satellite informed him that her phone was not registering. Another satellite link informed him that Zoe was nowhere in Metroville.
That's impossible...she couldn't have just vanished. And she wouldn't run off somewhere across the globe without telling me. I can't even pick up her quantum signature.
Suddenly, David's cell-phone went off. He mentally linked it to his building's network and had the call go through one of the data windows which displayed the number to The Brewhouse. "Flynn here."
"David, this is Kyle down at The Brewhouse. We were attacked!"
David arched an eyebrow and looked over at Damon, a concerned look on both their faces. "What happened, Kyle. Where's Zoe?"
"I'm not sure...this funky glowing portal thing appears and these military types jump out and start shooting up the block. Zoe took them out but got sucked into the portal."
David was about to say something when another window popped up and Violet's face appeared. "David, we got a problem," she said.
"Let me guess, glowing portal, gunmen stepping out and shooting things?"
"Yeah, but Jean and his asshole friend got sucked into a portal when they took out most of the attackers."
"Jean?" David asked as he and Damon exchanged confused looks. "Who the hell is Jean?"
"My boyfriend," Violet snapped. "He and his idiot friend took out the assholes attacking the diner we were at but idiot-boy ended up activating one of their portal thingies when he sliced their arm off."
"Whoa...wait...what?" David stammered.
"Boyfriend?" That comment came from Damon.
"Get your heads in the game, boys." Violet's voice came out as soft growl. "I managed to capture one of the guys alive, but he's going to need some medical attention."
"Did you call Dicker?" David asked.
"Not yet," Violet replied. "I figured we'd patch him up first at SST and then interrogate him." There was something in her tone that worried David.
"Okay, Vi," he said, "I'll have Null and Nigel meet you out there and bring you in. Then we'll have a chat with our-" He stopped as the original window monitoring the quantum surges suddenly flashed in warning. "Hold on a sec," he said as he looked at the data. "It looks like we got another..."
His widened in horror as he finished processing the data.
"OH SHIT!" he screamed. He linked up to SSTs PA system. "Everyone, get down, we're under att-"
The explosive force of the portal blew out all the windows of the front lobby as it manifested itself in front of the main entrance. Almost everyone in the lobby was knocked off their feet, some cut up by shards of the exploding glass from the windows. Even though they weren't at ground zero, David and Damon could feel the lab they were in shaking as equipment that was not secured fell off various counter tops. The floating video windows momentarily flickered before half of them vanished, including the one that was linked to Violet.
"What the hell was that?" Damon asked as lighting to the lab flickered out before the emergency lights came on.
Before David could answer, both young men heard the sounds of gunfire and the discharge of energy bursts coming from inside the building. David frowned as his mental link to the building's security system cut in and out on him.
Shit. That quantum burst must be fucking with the facility's electronics...almost like the 'blue haze' field Buddy used over Mexico City.
"Not sure, but it can't be good," David replied as he headed for the door of the lab only to stop before he walked right into it. "Oh yeah, definitely not good." He stepped back from the door and looked over at Damon. "Don't have time to try prying it open, Damon, would you mind..."
"Hold on," Damon said. He brought a hand up, his palm opening and glowing a searing bright orange color before a stream of concentrated heat shot out and blasted the door aside. Both men ran out into the hallway. "Flynn, where the hell are we going?"
"Lobby," Flynn replied as he led Damon down a corridor that led to one of the test labs.
"That's the other direction."
"Yeah, but I'm not about to go unarmed...and neither should you." David looked down at the glowing keypad and let out a sigh of relief as the LED screen read that it was still active. "Good thing I insulated the security locks to the vaults," he muttered as he tapped in a code. The door opened and both young men entered.
"Holy shit," Damon gasped as he saw some of the devices on the various tables. "I thought you weren't making weapons."
"I'm not manufacturing or selling them, Damon," David countered as he opened a display case, grabbed the weird device that looked like a laser rifle from a science fiction movie, and then tossed it to Damon who caught it. "Here, take this, it's fully charged and should last a couple hours."
"What is it?" Damon asked.
"Hard Air Discharger, fires a concentrated field of air compressed down and contained by a zero point energy field that dissipates in three seconds or when it hits a target," David replied as he walked over to a table that had sheet over it. "There's about fifteen shots in that device. Go through them all and it will be about five minutes before it recharges to fire a couple more."
"Hard Air Discharger?" Damon repeated. "You're telling me that it shoots bullets made of hard air.
"No, more like grenades made of air." David yanked the sheet off the table and looked at the two gray metal gauntlets. "This is my panic room, Damon. It's where I go to get the big guns when someone is kicking in my front door."
"Grenades?"
"Yeah, basically you take all the air in, let's say for example, a board room...compress it down into a zero point field that will keep it the size of a rifle round, and fire it. The field keeps containment for about three seconds once the thing is discharged from the weapon, unless it hits a target. All that air is suddenly released outward."
"Oh god," the realization hit Damon like a ton of bricks. "An explosion like that would, at minimum, throw people off their feet or, tear them apart if the projectile managed to enter a target before losing cohesion."
David looked over at Damon as he locked the gauntlets onto his own forearms. "Like I said, Damon. We got people kicking in my front door and I intend to take them down hard." He clenched his right fist and the gauntlet on his right forearm began to hum ominously and let off a faint neon blue glow. "Okay, let's take these bastards down."
Colonel Rick Flagg, Jr, US Air Force Colonel assigned to Project CADMUS and overall team leader of CADMUS' "Task Force X", ducked behind some overturned furniture for cover as beams of varying energy types flew overhead.
"Bloody hell!" George Harkness (aka Captain Boomerang) exclaimed over his headset as he took cover behind a pillar near the lobby entrance of the facility. "I thought we were taking down a company run by eggheads. No one said anything about Metas."
"Shut it, Boomerang," snapped Floyd Lawton, also known as the assassin called Deadshot, as he slapped another magazine into his pistol and fired a couple rounds at the twelve foot tall rock monster that threw a couch in retaliation.
"Fuck you, Lawton." Harkness broke cover and threw a couple of his custom mini-boomerangs at the monstrosity. The monster managed to bat one of them aside, but the other one embedded itself in the creature's arm before exploding and sending the monster falling backwards. "Score one for me, mates," Harkness laughed. His laughter was short-lived, however, as a strawberry blond suddenly appeared in front of him, grabbed him by the front of his costume and threw him across the lobby.
Lawton was about to line up a shot on the girl when his head suddenly exploded with pain, forcing him to drop his weapon. He glanced over and saw that Harkness and Flagg had also dropped to their knees and were clutching their heads as the high-pitched ultra-sonic scream ripped away at their eardrums.
"'Tea," Flagg managed to rasp out in pain, "take...him...argh! Down!"
Lawton looked up to see a tall Hispanic young man in his mid-twenties standing about a dozen yards off, mouth open and the air rippling around him slightly as the ultra-sonic scream intensified.
FUCK!
Lawton felt like his sinus cavities were about to rupture and, for a moment, his vision was blurring and he could feel himself losing consciousness as he felt a gust of wind brush by him.
And then, just as quickly as it happened, the screaming stopped right after a wet snap of someone's neck bwing broken. Lawton and looked up to see the last member of their team, Galatea, throwing the sonic-powered meta through the air before it impacted a wall, leaving a bloody smear as it slid to the floor.
"Oh god, Ricky!" he heard someone scream.
"Forget about him," Galatea sneered as she fired a burst of heat vision at the woman who had tossed Harkness around a few seconds earlier. "You're next."
However, Galatea's target dodged the energy burst, blurring out for a second before stopping right in front of Galatea and nailing her with a right-cross that sent the Kryptonian clone to the floor. Galatea rolled with the blow coming back up on her feet to block a couple kicks from the other woman.
"Nice moves, girl," Galatea said with a smirk. "Fast and strong." She caught another kick, but this time held the woman's leg. "But still nowhere near my league." With one arm, she swung her opponent by the leg, using her has a club to knock a large black man with glowing fists and a Native American man with a couple knives off their feet. She then slammed the other girl into the ground still holding her by the leg. "And you can break just like the rest." She suddenly brought her other arm down hard into the side of the girl's leg, snapping it like a twig and causing the other girl to cry out in pain.
"What's the matter, honey," Galatea taunted as she released the girl's leg, "did that hurt?" She then brought her foot down on the same leg she had broken and another snap was heard as it was broken in another location, causing the girl to scream again. "Bet that hurt too," Galatea chuckled before delivering a punch to the other woman's jaw that knocked her out cold.
"Ash!"
Galatea barely had time to turn around before a gigantic stone fist hit her, embedding her in the wall. Before she could pull herself out of the wall, the rock-like monster charged into her, knocking her through the wall, into the room behind it, and through the wall on the other side.
"Goddamn Bitch!" the monster swore as he pounded away on Galatea, the impacts of his punches causing the ground to shake.
There was another flare of heat-vision and the monster roared in agony before being thrown back through the holes he and Galatea had made. When his body came to a stop, there was a hole in his chest, the edges of the hole glowing like magma where Galatea had cored him.
"Well, that was easy," Harkness chuckled as he got up. "Killed of two these bastards and took out the rest."
"Where's the target?" Galatea asked as she rejoined the team in the lobby. "The walls are scrambling my X-Ray visi-AUUUUUGH!" she screamed as a glowing blue field enveloped her before she was sent crashing through the front doors and into the parking lot.
"What the hell?" Harkness holloered as he brought out a couple more boomerangs. There was the sound of whooshing air, and then his right arm momentarily jerked to the side before an unseen force tore the right forearm away as a contained burst of hard-air that embedded itself in his arm lost cohesion and exploded outward.
"Damn," Lawton muttered as he saw a now one armed George Harkness drop to the ground unconscious, possibly dead. He turned and saw another black man with dreadlocks holding a weird looking rifle that looked like something out of science fiction film. The man turned in his direction and Lawton managed to avoid something that whooshed over his head by diving forward. He rolled up in a crouch, bringing one of his pistols up and pulled the trigger. But the sudden explosion of air behind him knocked him forward, throwing off his aim. Instead of hitting the target in the forehead, it hit the weapon he was holding. There was the sound of electrical pops and some cursing, followed by the sound of something being dropped to the ground. Lawton scrambled to his feet and smiled as he brought up his pistol and the mini-gun mounted on his left fore-arm. "Guess you have nothing now," he said.
The black man only sneered at him as he clenched his fists and then his whole body exploded into flames. "Think again, asshole," the man snarled as he fired a stream of flame at Lawton.
Lawton jumped to the side and fired, a hint of pride as all the bullets hit and the man staggered backwards. "Amateur," he drawled, a smirk on his face. Then the smirk faded when he saw the man straighten up, the bullet holes on his body disappearing as he became a being of living flame.
"You were saying?" the fiery being asked as he stepped forward, both fists raised and fireballs forming around them. Then he was suddenly engulfed by a white foggy substance, causing him to stumble and cough. "What the-" A metal clang cut him off and he slumped to the floor unconscious.
Lawton looked up and saw Flagg standing over the unconscious man who had reverted back to his human form. "C'mon," Flagg ordered as he dropped the fire extinguisher he held in his hands. "'Tea's got the target outside. Let's grab Harkness and get out of here."
"No arguments from me," Lawton said as he helped Flagg pick up and drag an unconscious Harkness towards the exit.
Galatea screamed in agony. It felt like every nerve ending throughout her body was on fire and then someone had poured molten metal in her blood vessels. She couldn't move and felt even more pain as she was thrown into the pavement of the parking lot repeatedly. Her vision cleared up enough to see the target, David Pine Flynn, standing there, glaring at her with intense hatred and wearing a silver high-tech looking gauntlet on each arm.
"You came to my home," he said, a dead tone in his voice as he spoke.
He raised his right hand, the gauntlet on his right forearm glowing a bit brighter and she was suddenly lifted off the ground again, pain searing through her paralyzed body.
"You hurt people close to me."
With a slashing gesture from Flynn, Galatea was thrown into parked car.
"You KILLED people I considered family!"
She was picked up and slammed into the ground again, this time being planted a foot into the pavement and then dragged through the parking before being lifted up off the ground again. By now, her throat was raw from screaming and her vocal chords had now locked up on her as she was lifted up off the ground again and brought to float in the air a few feet in front of him. He brought his other arm up and then, with both hands, he made a spread apart gesture. Against her will, Galatea felt her arms and legs being spread apart from her body so she was splayed out in front of him.
"Your body can apparently take a lot of damage," Flynn stated, anger now seeping into his voice. "But you're still experiencing a lot of pain because I'm channeling a shitload of quantum energy into your body via these Zero-Point gauntlets of mine. It's also allowing me to neutralize most of your muscle movements. Give me enough time, I think I might be able to stop your vital organs. But for now, I think I'll start with this."
More pain tore through her body, but Galatea still couldn't scream. However, her eyes did tear up from the pain, blurring her vision. But despite the pain, she could feel the fingers in both her hands moving, being manipulated by the field enveloping her whole body. She could feel her fingers being bent backwards, and then she heard the wet snaps as they broke.
"How does it feel, BITCH!?" Flynn snarled at her.
Galatea's thoughts were practically nothing but intense pain in agony though a part of her was still shocked at the damage being inflicted on her. Then she felt her hands suddenly being slowly bent backwards, he bones and muscles straining as they were being pushed past their physical limits.
"I'm going to break every bone in your fucking body," the man said. "First your, fingers, then your hands, then your-"
BLAM!
The first shot hit Flynn in the right shoulder, causing him to stumble as the field stopped trying to bend Galatea's hands backwards.
BLAM!
The second shot hit him in the arm and he spun around.
BLAM!
The third shot hit Flynn in the chest knocking him to the ground and the field containing Galatea vanished, dropping her to the ground a few feet away from Flynn.
"Tea, you alright?" Galatea blinked her eyes a couple times to clear her vision. Though she was still seeing spots, she could make out Deadshot holding a pistol in one hand while he knelt down and punched Flynn in the face to make sure he was out.
The pain throughout her body was dying down and she could feel her fingers healing up as the sunlight hit her body, causing her regenerative abilities to kick in. "Oh yeah," she said as she got back up on her feet. She then looked down at the unconscious and bleeding Flynn and started to step towards him. "Just let me break an arm or two and-"
"No," Flagg said as he stepped forward, the unconscious Captain Boomerang over his large shoulders in a fireman's carry. He reached down with his free hand and pushed a button on the device clipped to his belt. "Flynn's down and out, as ordered. We take him and get the hell out."
The Boom tube exploded into existence in front of them. Without any prompting, Deadshot, picked up Flynn and then ran into the portal.
"You're next, Tea," Flagg ordered.
"Just a sec," Galatea said, an evil smile forming on her lips. She saw what she recognized to be a classic car. If memory served her correctly, it was a 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 convertible. She flew over, picked it up, and threw it into the lobby of the SST building. Just before it hit the ground, she kicked in her heat vision, targeting the vehicle's gas tank. The resulting explosion blew out the rest of the building's front and caused part of it to collapse.
"Okay," she said cheerfully as she turned around to reface Flagg. "Now we can go." She was still giggling as she vanished into the portal while Rick Flagg followed behind her. A couple seconds later, the portal snapped closed, leaving this parallel world behind.
Off in the distance, however, certain nova with short cropped reddish-brown hair and wearing an over coat floated high up in the sky, bowing his head slightly as he now realized that all the pieces to this twisted puzzle fell into place.
"And so it begins..."
End Notes: Okay, not too sure I like how this chapter turned out, but I knew it was going to be ugly. Yes, there is going to be some fallout and some misplaced blame going around after this.
