The Faces from The Past

Holiday finally arrive at Cross Academy. It is time when students come home and meet their family they miss for months. A happy time, most students said that, but for Cross Nina this time is the most annoying time in a year.

Why not? Here is her home. No hanging out as usual. Her father is too busy to go anywhere, and she is not allowed to go out to the town without no one accompanies her. And very few friends she can talk with now. Most days she will spend with her father, who will barely at home. It is always like this, every holiday, in every year.

But no matter how annoying this holiday, Nina still wants to wave out her hands and say see you to Yori at the gate. This is the last time they meet before they departed for weeks later.

"You can come to my house if you feel lonely here, Nina!"

Nina jumps out and takes few backwards steps when she heard that voice so close to her ear. She almost got heart attack just now, only if she hasn't gotten strong these past years. Hazuki Airi has stood behind her! And smiles at her too! How could it be? Nina doesn't even feel her presence coming! And how could be that girl is still smiling when she almost kill a person today?

"You still like a scaredy kitten!" she jokes.

"You surprised me!" she shouts almost sound hysteric. But then she calmed herself with coughs and reminds herself again about what Airi just said before that girl freaks her out. "I will think about it later."

"Okay. I leave my number just in case. Bye, Nina!" With that, Hazuki Airi gone too.

In the afternoon, right at the sunset, it is Night Class's turn to come home. This time Nina only watches from far away. After what happened between her and Kaname she has no guts to face that pureblood at day time again. Whenever she meets him, her face suddenly turns red. She can not control of it and she gets pissed off because of it. So, instead of appearing and say see you to them all, she just watching behind the shadow, watch the back of Kaname slowly fades away.

She bows upon them who have far away already. "Please have a safe trip, Kaname." she whispered.

Unknown by her, Kaname can hear what she said and silently smile.

After that, she finds herself surprised to see Aidou Hanabusa is still in academy. That noble stands in noble way—which is not suitable for his circumstances now—behind a tree near the gate. Nina doesn't want give a comment on it, but of all night class, of all vampires in there, why would this guy should be the one who stay here? Why not anybody else?

By the time Nina wants to say something, that noble has realized her presence. "What are you doing there, Senpai? Are you homeless now?"

"Hey, watch your mouth, Cross Nina!" Aidou approaches her and snapped childishly.

"Then what are you doing here? I heard them—the night class—will have holiday in your mansion. Why don't you come with them?" She bet it will be strange for those night class students to have holiday in someone's house when that one is here not with them.

"That is..." Aidou averts his eyes of her.

Nina sighs. She doesn't want to know either. "Just behave yourself and don't ever think to steal my blood, Senpai!"

When she turns around in order to go back home, she hears someone is coming towards her. It is getting closer. Fortunately it is only one. Somehow there is something in those steps which is getting closer to her each second. In those steady sounds of foot steps... there is something familiar. Very familiar.

Turn. Not turn. Turn. Not turn.

"Oi, girl over there!" Too late. Nina has frozen on her place.

She knows the voice, the deep hard voice that she had not heard for long. So long until she almost forgot. Bur she hard to forget that voice, because there is only one person in this world who has such kind of voice. She tries to turn around, moves her body which as rigid as a statue now, faces the stranger that come from the sunset.

That is a man with cow boy hat and long coat. Nothing special on him: black hair, dark eyes, cigarette on his mouth, and gun on his back. May be everyone will pay most of their attention to the gun behind that man or the big eye catching eye patch which covers almost half of his face, only let one of his eyes look at her. Seeing that eye patch, reminds Nina about how that eye patch could be there, and what scars lie behind it. That guy lost one of his eyes, and that is how that eye patch could be there on the first place. That eye got hurt and lost because of saving someone many years ago, someone dears to Nina more than her own life. For her surprise, he still wearing the same eye patch after many years have passed, much reminds her of the past. Secretly, she wonder how if her brother still alive. What would they say, especially her oldest brother Zero, about the eye patch? The last time she saw her brother, that little boy is still feeling guilty for making his teacher lost one of his eyes.

Nothing changes on him. He is still the man who sometimes comes to her house, keep her and her brothers or take care of them when their parents out for a mission. The man who always praises Zero, the man who makes Ichiru depressed every day, and the man who never looks at her.

Yagari Touga.

"Miss?" Suddenly that man had already stood in front of her. Nina has to look up to see him on face. Now she is aware. No more nostalgic flashback. "Do you know where I can meet the chairman?"

Nina dazes for a while. She can not believe she success deceive this man with only change her hair colour and covers her eyes with soft lens. But then she remembers that this man and her had never met face to face like this before. Of course this man can not recognize her. Silently Nina let out a sigh of relief.

"Um... sure. This way, Sir!" Before going, she glances at Aidou who now looks get annoyed now. He shows his dislike towards a hunter like Yagari without any hesitation, just like the rest of vampires.

Then she accompanies him to chairman's office. Along the way, none of them talks. Nina seems to be very calm, contrast to her wild heart beat. When he finally meets her father in his office, Nina closes the door with relief.

Then she walks away to her room, not room in the dorm, but room in chairman's house. Her home. Unexpectedly, when she arrives there, there is a blonde vampire waits in dining room. As if he is the owner of the house, he looks at Nina with humiliated eyes.

"You're too slow!" he grumbled. "I've waited for too long!"

"I've never told you to wait here." Nina said coldly. "And besides, what are you doing here, Aidou-senpai? Please go back to your dorm!"

"I won't!" he insisted in annoying way. He gave her deadly glare. "Where is your manner? You have a special guest here and you just want to get rid of him as you wish?"

"Yes." Nina answered, started to get pissed off.

"I won't go back," he insisted in very stubborn way. But then he started blushing, "because I'm hungry and nothing can be eaten there."

"Then drink someone's blood out there!" Nina said without thinking twice.

Aidou grins. "Will you give yours?"

A knife suddenly flies right next to Aidou's left ear, even cut some of his precious hair. Aidou can't say a word when he turns to the wall and sees that dangerous thing pierce through it, stands still there. If just that knife was thrown one millimetre to the left, he must have lost one of his ear.

Aidou quickly turns and ready to snapped, but he suddenly quiet when he sees Nina turns into demon-aura-creature.

She holds more knives between her fingers. She grins at him as if throwing those knives was her number one hobby. "What did you say, Senpai?"

"N-nothing, s-surely nothing." Aidou frightened and thought that may be this is his last day.

Chairman's room, few minutes before

"It's a surprise to see you here, Yagari-kun!" Cross Kaien, the chairman, welcomed Yagari Touga childishly in his office.

That man drinks her rose tea while Yagari stay still, only the smoke of his cigarette that swirls in the air before disappear. Kaien smell this serious aura. He stops joking and turns serious too. That chairman rises from his chair and turn to the window behind his chair. Through the window, he sees his adoptive daughter, Cross Nina, walks to their home.

"How long have you kept her from association?" Yagari asked him bluntly.

There is no doubt who the "her" Yagari is talking about. But Kaien doesn't smiles. "Well... not too long, it hasn't five years yet since she lived here." he still looks through the windows although Nina has gone. "I admitted I was a bit surprised you recognized her, Yagari-kun."

Yagari let out tsk sound out of his mouth. "I'm not an old man yet, and who will be tricked by those simple disguises?" he grumbled. Then he calmed down. "Or... may be it's because I paid attention to that ghost-like girl."

That is true. Since Yagari sees the figure of that girl hide behind curtain in Kiryuu's house, he had pay attention to that girl, especially when Zero started to talk about her many years ago. Believe or not, the first time he saw that girl, he thought it only his imagination or that girl might be a ghost or something like that.

It was Yagari's initiative to ask about the girl in Kiryuu's house to both Zero and Ichiru, only to confirm whether it was his imagination, a ghost, or a real girl. Zero talked the truth, that the girl he saw wasn't a ghost. It is a real girl; moreover she was Kiryuu's youngest child. Yagari surprised but never asked about it further because Zero told him first. Started from then, Zero always shared him stories about her, especially about his regret of being unable to make her parents let that youngest sister of him to join his training and becomes a hunter. Yagari remember how Zero always thought her, worried her, and said that he will become a strong hunter for her. Zero shows photo of her many times until Yagari remembered her face. Many questions echoed in his head: why was that girl never be announced to the world? Why her family erased her being and any tracks of her in the first place? If it because of her born a weakling, it was non sense. If it only because of her fragile body, Zero's parents would have only not making her a hunter, not hide her from the world.

"I remembered how surprised the president and the association when they knew that Kiryuu has three children." he murmured. "But when the girl reported dead, they quickly forgot her."

"Yagari-kun, you sounds like a father already." Kaien laughed childishly, teased him.

"First, her parents, and now you. Why everyone hides this girl because of nothing?" Yagari grumbled again.

"It is not because of nothing. I have reason, Yagari-kun, and that is for her sake." Kaien said seriously. "Since those tests proven right, I only want her to life as a human, as a normal girl."

"You sound like those ups." Yagari breathe his cigarette. "Acting like they are keeping but actually they are using him."

Kaien sighed. "She is my daughter. I am her father too. I don't want it happen to my daughter. If they sniff something about her, they will using her doubtlessly, or kill her when she becomes uncontrollable. She is safe here I don't want it to change."

Hearing those strong willed words, Yagari didn't say a word but exhale. "By the way, why you called me here?"

A week later

Nina waits patiently on the gate, ready to welcome the Night Class student, which is anyway decided to return home quicker than scheduled. That daughter of Kaien doesn't know how to react, should she happy because her boring day in Sun Dorm finally over and she is able to see Kaname again, or should he worry because of their sudden changing plan.

Nina decides to do the last one: worry is better than act happily like insane girl.

When shadows appear on the gate, Nina shows her welcome smile. Those shadows, of course the night class students. She bows as they passed her.

"Welcome back, everyone!" she greeted them all.

"Sorry for makes you wait, Nina."

Cross Nina stands up again, faces the dorm leader of night class. Both vampires and humans said this dark-haired guy is the most handsome man in the world. Every girl—both vampires and humans—will do anything only to get closer to him at the banquet. But at the same time, most vampires afraid of his enormous power, respect him, worshipped him, and even think dirty of using him someday. Nina knows this guy in front of her is not that stupid to get tricked easily by those who only want to use him for their own sake. But she has the right to worry, because of all girls and women in the world; she is one of few people who can get close to him.

And she doesn't need anything in return but this man's safety.

"It's nothing." For a second, Nina turns her eyes and sees Souen Ruka glares at her, at them. Her eyes full of jealous and envy. But without say a thing, that lady from night class goes back to the dorm with everyone else. Now there are only Kaname and her who still on this place. When she turns her eyes back to her front, Kaname leans closer to her.

With her hand, she stops Kaname on his place before he gets closer again.

"K-Kaname-senpai, you're too close, don't you think?"

Kaname smiles gently. "So, I get nothing in school. I see." Then he touches her face gently before heading to the dorm, just like everyone else.

Somehow Nina's mind is racing. She feels like if she lost this moment, she will regret it forever. Instinctively, she grabs his wrist, stops Kuran Kaname before he goes far away. When Kaname stares at her, suddenly she lost of what she will say just now.

"What is it?" Kaname asked, look confused.

"He asked it first and now acts dumb. Damn it!" she grumbles in mind. When she sees Kaname waits for her answer, she finally lost it. "Argh! Forget it!" With all of her energy—and surprisingly—obedient move from Kaname, Nina manages to pull him closer and leans to her.

And locks his lips with gentle kiss.

When they separated, Nina smiles at him, she tries to not blushing, but now she feels like someone burns her face. "Okaeri—welcome back—... Kaname."

Kaname sees a little blush on her cheeks, but decides not to say it in front of her. He touches her lips, feel the softness on tip of his fingers and smiles. "I'm back, Nina."

When Kaname says those gentle words, Nina can see hole in his smiles. He is hiding something.

"Kaname, is something wrong?" she spoke her mind. "Why are you back so sudden? The holiday is still long. And why don't I feel Okaa-sama's presence here?"

Kaname strokes her cheeks gently. "Yuuki is home right now. It's all right. I'm sorry to make you worry so much."

Kaname avoids answering the main question. She understands that it means that she can't know the answer. Not now. But no matter what he is hiding right now, she hopes it is not dangerous thing.

If only she knew that time that Kaname hide something terrible from her.

Chairman's Office, two hours later

"Is there anything wrong, Dad?" Nina asked her father about the reason why she is being called to the chairman's office on holiday.

Kaien looks at her through his glasses with serious looking face. So unusual for him. That means... there is something serious he wants to talk about. Behind his chair, Kaien passed some papers to Nina. That daughter of chairman receives those papers and read it.

Suddenly her eyes widened.

"D-Dad... Chairman... this is..." she stammered.

Kaien sighed. "Yes, Nina." He crosses her hands on his face, while his eyes focused on Nina's surprise reaction. "He wants to move to this academy. I can accept it, but I think the right is in your hands. It is up to you, to accept him or not in this academy."

The "him" Kaien talks about is the one whose pictures is on those papers. Yes, it is that silver haired guy whose profile was written on the first page of papers, the guy who is looks very similar to Nina, the guy who is the older brother of her.

Hi, everyone! Sorry for the late-late-late updates. I'm a college student now and my time is limited, plus wattpad is my new toy now. So, I never touched fanfic again for the whole time. Sorry about that.

And sorry for the time skip. Well, because I guess you all knew what happened in Aidou's mansion, so I think I don't need to explain it in detail. For Nina and Aidou, seriously, nothing happen next. After almost been cut by a knife, Aidou decides to get back to his dorm.

And next chapter, we finally enter the climax arc. Please wait for the surprise I have prepared for you guys there (as a compensation of late updates, I guess).
