"It looks so real." Jeremy whispered as he stared down at Bonnie.
"Because technically, it is." Damon replied, opening his trunk.
"You are not putting her in there." Kenzie snapped.
"Why not?" Damon practically whined. "She's dead."
Kenzie rolled her eyes. "Did you put me in the trunk when I died the first time?"
"No." Came his petulant reply, closing the trunk.
"Wait, you know about that?" Jeremy asked.
Kenzie nodded with a small shrug. "Yup, Kathy spilled the beans, Damon uncompelled me, or whatever." She wrinkled her nose, wondering if that was even the right word.
"What do you mean, the first time?" the younger teen asked.
"Get in, we'll explain on the way." Damon told him, holding open the door for Jeremy to climb into the back, the dead witch in his arms.
Kenzie got in the passenger seat, waiting til Damon was on the road before turning around and speaking to Jeremy. "Elijah killed me, obviously I'm fine, I have a magic ring and don't worry Bonnie will be fine."
"Why didn't anyone tell me?" He asked.
"Because when it comes down to it, no one can beat Damon and I at lying. We needed this to be believable."
"And it was." Damon informed them, having been the only one there when it went down. "Now we get to tell Elena the news."
"She'll love it." Kenzie turned to face the front, her mouth smacking into Damon's wrist that was held out in front of her face, a vein opened.
"What the hell?" She sputtered before he forced the wrist to her mouth so she had no choice but to accept it.
"Your hand is still bleeding."
"Right." She replied, the pain returning now that she remembered what had happened.
"Again, why are you being so stupid?"
She glared at him as they pulled up to the Gilbert house and Jeremy got out to gather some items to take with him to the abandoned witch house. Bonnie would be staying there, under the radar, while they came up with a new plan.
"It wasn't stupid. You need to be kept in top form, me, not so much, you can either heal me or I'll just come back alive."
"That was incredibly stupid." He scowled.
She shrugged, she personally didn't think so but to each their own. "So what happened?"
"It was a spectacular light and wind show the witch had going on. Elena was screaming, Bonnie slammed the door to keep her out. Then she fell to the ground, Klaus thinking he killed her. Elena fell apart."
"I'm sure she'll be ecstatic when she learns the truth. I take it you're telling her?"
"Looks like, unless you want to do that."
She only grinned at him as Jeremy got back in the car and they went and dropped him and Bonnie off, Kenzie telling him what to do in order for Bonnie to wake up. When he was safely in the house, Damon drove them back to his house, both of them raising an eyebrow at each other before they entered the house knowing they were in for some hell.
"What did you do with her?" Elena demanded the moment they walked in.
"Will you please calm her down?" Damon asked his brother.
"No." Came Elena's tearful reply. "Don't talk like I'm not standing right in front of you."
Kenzie heard Damon let out a small sigh of annoyance as his eyes widened. "Please calm down."
"You knew." Elena stated "Didn't you? You knew that if she harnessed all that power, that she would die, didn't you?"
Damon glanced at Kenzie who gave an almost helpless shrug before he turned back to the crying brunette. "Yes, yes I knew."
Elena let out a noise of disgust before lifting her hand and slapping Damon as hard as she could. Kenzie stepped forward, putting herself in between them and getting right into Elena's face as she narrowed her eyes.
"Never do that again." She hissed.
"My best friend is dead." Elena practically yelled. "He knew so I'm guessing you did too and my best friend is now dead, he deserves to be staked."
Kenzie stepped forward, not caring that Elena had at least 6 inches on her and noted with satisfaction that Elena stepped back, looking a bit wary.
"Never say that again." Kenzie's voice was low and dangerous.
"Why are you even standing up for him?" Elena cried. "You're always standing up for him and I don't get why. Don't you understand? He could never love you Kenzie, he's in love with me."
Kenzie shook her head in disgust. "Stop saying shit that you think will hurt me because you hurt too. You think I don't know the deal with us? I do and that's all that matters and me and Damon are so not the issue here. Look, Bonnie knew the consequences, she told you the consequences but you're a complete idiot if we didn't think about all of this ahead of time. We're not stupid, we knew Klaus was using Alaric."
"What?" Stefan cut in, grabbing Elena's hand and pulling his girlfriend away as the two couples faced off against one another.
"How could you not see it?" Kenzie asked in disbelief.
"How could you not tell us?" He countered, looking between the two.
"Redbird's the one who figured it out." Damon informed them. "And when she did, we had to figure out a new way to stop him because he would just jump into another body, it could've been any one of us, even with Bonnie on our side, even if she succeeded this time. So we needed to make Klaus believe that Bonnie was out of the picture and this was the only way. She cast a spell, she's okay."
He gave one last meaningful look to Stefan and Elena before grabbing Kenzie's hand and pulling her out of the room towards his room.
"You know, you could have told me." Stefan quickly caught up with them and Kenzie answered before Damon got the chance.
"Please, you'd tell Elena the moment you knew and then it wouldn't have been very believable."
Stefan sighed. "You know, I expected this from my brother but I'm kind of surprise you went along with this Kenzie."
She scowled. "are you being serious? Do you want your girlfriend left alive or not?"
"Do you understand what you two put her through?"
"See, that's why I didn't tell you." Damon said. "'Cause you would have never been able to do it. Don't get me wrong, Stefan, I don't mind being the bad guy. I'll make all the life and death decisions while you're busy worrying about collateral damage. I'll even let her hate me for it. But at the end of the day, I'll be the one to keep her alive."
Kenzie gave a small shrug to show she agreed as Damon tugged her along into his room, slamming the door shut.
"You." Damon said, turning around to face Kenzie. "You are turning out to be one crazy chick." He leaned closer, a hand coming up to cup her cheek as he whispered. "I'm not worth all that."
"I beg to differ." She whispered back.
"Why?" He asked.
She looked down, almost shyly before lifting her eyes to meet his. "Do you love me?"
His lips quirked into a small smile. "Are we going to be one of those couples who get all soppy and gross people out?"
"Is that what we are?"
His smile turned into a smirk. "After everything we've been through, kind of thought so. And I do, you know. Love you."
She smiled, a small blush filling her cheeks. "And that's why you're worth it."
"So this isn't about what Elena said in there?"
She grew puzzled before realizing he was talking about Elena claiming that he still loved her. "Do you?"
He made a pfft noise. "No."
"I'd understand if you still did a little, I mean, you loved Katherine for how many years? And by understand I mean I wouldn't go rip her hair at the moment."
He chuckled, his hands trailing down her shoulders and arms before moving down to her waist and then around her back, trailing further down until his hands were cupping her ass and he lifted her up, her legs coming up to wrap around his waist as he turned and carried her towards the bed, dropping her on it before following suit, stopping himself before his weight crushed her.
"I do enjoy you're mean streak."
"I hope that's not the only thing you enjoy about me."
Damon smirked, moving slightly to remove her white go-go boots before one hand came up to pull out the hair tie and release the braid. "I can think of some other things about you I enjoy."
Her hands started unbuttoning his shirt. "You gonna tell me what all those are?"
He grabbed a piece of her hair, using the end of it to tickle her nose, cheeks and lips before brushing his lips over the areas he just tickled. "Well those freckles that you keep so well hidden-"
"Oh, sorry." The two looked up to see Elena standing at the door, waiting to talk to them and looking like she wasn't leaving anytime soon.
Damon sighed, rolling to his side and sitting up. "Ugh. Look. Klaus had to think she was dead. Your reaction had to be real."
"I understand why you did what you did. Klaus was fooled, and Bonnie's alive."
"Here's to duplicity."
"But let's get one thing straight, Damon. Bonnie will not die for me, I will not let that happen."
Damon stood up, "We need to kill Klaus, Elena. Real Klaus. Who will probably be coming to pay you a visit soon now that he knows that Bonnie is dead. She's the only one who can do it."
"We'll find another way." Elena said, a stubborn set to her jaw.
"I hope so."
Elena sighed, stepping closer. "I shouldn't have hit you."
"Apology accepted."
Elena gave him a small smile, still ignoring Kenzie.
"Let me be clear about something." Damon told her. "If it comes down to you and the witch again, I will gladly let Bonnie die. I will always choose you."
Kenzie sat up now, watching them closely as they seemed oblivious to her.
Elena stared at him a few seconds longer before looking down. "Good night Damon."
She left the room and Damon turned around to see Kenzie looking between him and Elena with disgust.
"What?" He asked.
She shook her head, scooting to the edge of the bed before standing up and grabbing her bag, walking past him into the bathroom, her body rigid with anger.
"Red, Kenzie, come on, what is it?" He asked.
She stopped, just inside the door, turning to face him. "Good to see I don't exist to either of you guys when you're together. I think you answered my earlier question."
"What are you talking about?"
"The one about you being in love with her. But here's the real funny thing, she just might feel the same way too." Kenzie slammed the door, leaving Damon looking after it in surprise.
… … …
The next morning, Kenzie woke up alone and briefly wondered if Damon had even come to bed at all. After she had stormed into the bathroom, taken a shower and calmed down, she had returned to the room to find it empty. She had decided just to go to sleep, not wanting to bother with him again and had fallen into a deep sleep, so had no idea what had become of Damon.
The door to his bedroom was thrown open and she sat up, startled by the banging as Damon stood there looking a little wild.
"What? What is it?" She asked, looking bewildered.
He used his speed to move to the bed, sitting beside her as he lifted both hands to her cheeks. "You're okay?" He asked, looking her over.
"Yes, what's going on?"
"Elijah and Elena are gone."
She gave him a puzzled look as her mind tried to comprehend what he was saying.
"Elena pulled the dagger from Elijah. He's now awake and out with Elena. I wanted to make sure he didn't touch you before taking off with her."
"Really? What about her?" She asked.
He waved her off. "Stefan's problem."
She grabbed his arms, lowering them from her face. "Stefan's problem? Really? You're the one who was willing to let everyone die to save Elena."
Damon leaned closer to her. "Not everyone."
She rolled her eyes, leaning away from him as she threw back the covers to get out of bed. "Funny, last night you were all 'I'll always choose you."
He grabbed her arm, pulling her around and back to the bed. "Because you have a ring and I don't have to worry about you, that's why. Even with all the stupid shit you pull."
She cocked her head to the side. "I'm supposed to believe that?"
"Yes." He replied with a frustrated sigh. "I thought our conversation before that made it quite clear."
She leaned closer to him, unsure of where Stefan was at the moment. "Even though she feels something for you now?"
"Or maybe you're seeing something that isn't really there."
"Not when my whole thing is about watching people, I know these things."
"Fine, even though she might feel something for me. Everything you said about her long ago was right. We're too different, I'm too dark for her and she can't handle me quite like you can."
Kenzie furrowed her brow, trying to figure out just how much she believed and Damon let out another frustrated sigh.
"Are you done being jealous?"
"Are you done being an asshole?" She shot back.
The two continued to stare at each other until Damon's lips quirked in amusement, Kenzie soon following suit. He leaned forward placing a kiss on her nose.
"Kind of hot when you're being all jealous."
She glared. "I told you I don't like sharing, you dumbass. So shut up and come here." Kenzie grabbed the front of his shirt, pulling him closer and he obliged for a few moments, kissing her before pulling away.
"Stefan, doesn't want us to do anything. He's trusting Elena."
She shrugged. "What do you want me to do?"
"Find her."
"I thought you didn't care."
"Now that you're okay, I don't want her being handed over to Klaus by him. That would spell bad news for all of us."
Kenzie sighed as she stood up again. "Fine but how am I supposed to do that?"
"I don't know. I tried calling her but she's not answering."
"Cause he probably took her phone."
"Then let's go to Ric's house and see if he handed her over." Damon suggested.
"That's not one of your smarter ideas. We go there, Klaus is there, we die."
Damon rolled his eyes. "Fine, you go there. If you die, you'll come back to life."
Kenzie scowled. "I'm glad you're so blasé about it, you asshole."
He ignored her, waiting for her to finish changing before he stood up and dropped two vials into her palm.
"It's vervain." He answered her unspoken question. "If he's not there, you might as well see if Katherine and Jill are there. If they are, that means they're compelled to stay and this might help with further compulsion."
"And you're helping them?" She asked surprised.
"We might need their help and as much as I hate the bitch, she wants Klaus dead as much as us."
"Fine." She grumbled. "I'm going. Go play nice with your brother, see if you can find Elena, would love to see Elijah again, maybe stick a stake through him for revenge."
Damon chuckled. "It won't kill him."
"No but I'll feel better."
"You're one crazy bitch."
She smirked as she tossed her hair back, walking out of the room "Yeah, but you love it." She threw back.
"Don't I ever." He muttered.
…. … …
Kenzie silently made her way up the stairs to Alaric's apartment, praying he, or rather the Klaus version of him, wasn't there. Despite her nifty little ring that made it possible for her to bounce back once she was dead, it was still very disorienting and she wasn't keen on doing it a lot.
When she reached the door, she put her ear against the door, trying to listen for movement and she could hear very faint rustling but no one came to the door. Any vampire would be aware of a presence so she wondered if perhaps Alaric wasn't there and the vampires in there were compelled to not answer the door. She tried the doorknob, finding it was locked and frowned, wondering why the hell a vampire like Klaus needed to even lock a door? She shrugged, pulling a couple bobbypins out of her hair and kneeling down in front of the door as she set to work, picking the lock. It only took a couple of minutes, when the doorknob turned and she pushed it open, a body standing in front of her. She slowly looked up, Katherine looking down at her in surprise.
"This is the cavalry?" the vampire asked in disbelief. "Out of everyone possible, they sent me the tiniest most insignificant one of them all."
Kenzie scowled as she stood up. "Get bent, Vampbitch. Why the hell would anyone want to save you?"
Katherine reached for her, sporting her own scowl when she was stopped by the invisible barrier Klaus had created for her. "Then why are you here." She snarled.
Kenzie's own scowl turned to a smirk as she held up one of the vials of vervain. "I have something for you."
"And that's supposed to help me how? A little late for that."
"But not too late that you can save yourself from any further compelling." Kenzie explained. "Now where's Jill? I have one for her too."
"Not here." Katherine announced.
"Then where is she?"
"Probably dead."
"What? Explain."
"Why should I?" Katherine asked.
Kenzie sighed and rolled her eyes, tossing both vervain vials at Katherine. "there, you're saved from doing anything else, where is she?"
"Bottom of the Lockwood well."
"And that's significant to her being dead, how?"
The vampire smirked. "Oh I know Mason dropped lots of vervain in it to keep the pesky vampires from getting the moonstone. Fat lot of good that did him, huh? Considering Klaus has it now."
"Right because I was going to hand over the moonstone without a backup plan, huh?"
Katherine, who had just taken a drink of the first vial began to choke on it. "What?" she sputtered.
"One question." Kenzie said. "Why double cross everyone if we're all working to getting rid of Klaus."
"I didn't think your merry band of idiots would stand a chance against Klaus, so I was looking out for myself.
"let me be honest. You're an idiot, look where you ended up."
"So where's the moonstone?"
Kenzie shrugged as she backed away from the door. "Whatever do you mean, Kathy?" She batted wide innocent eyes. "Have a great time, I'm going to find Elijah."
"What about Jill?"
Another shrug. "So not my problem. Rule number one, stay the fuck away from my family, even if you are family, Dad's more important then she'll ever be."
She left Katherine staring after her and she pulled out her phone as she hurried down the steps to call Damon when her phone began to ring, she picked it up, recognizing Jack's number.
"Hello Mackenzie, I require your help."
"Look, I know you've been like, dehydrated for over a hundred years, but you need to lighten up with-"
"I need your help." He cut her off. "I was in the woods, hunting for animals when I heard Jill's cries. I found her just in time to see your friend Alaric throw her into a well. I went to her and she was screaming. There is vervain in the water. She says it's diluted but enough to hurt her and incapacitate her. I can't go in and get her."
"And you want me to?"
"Please, hurry."
"After everything she's done to me?"
"Please." He begged of her. "We will speak after."
She sighed as she began jogging towards the Lockwood estate. "Fine, I will be there soon."
"Where are you?"
"Near Alaric's actually. Don't worry, I'm jogging. I'll be there as fast as I can but you know I don't drive, so she'll have to-"
She stopped as she was picked up and thrown over someones shoulders and moving at lightning fast speed. She glanced down at her phone to see Jack had hung up a while ago.
"Really?" She called to him but was ignored. Kenzie rolled her eyes, waiting until he had reached the estate and put her down. "You vampires and your manhandling." She griped.
"Please hurry." Was his reply as he grabbed a rope nearby and began to tie it around her waist. Kenzie removed her phone from her pocket and tied up her hair while he finished.
"I will lower you down." Jack picked Kenzie up and practically threw her over the side, the redhead letting out a really girly scream as she dropped several feet before she was jerked to a stop. She gasped at the sudden stop and looked up to the opening of the well, glaring at her ancestor.
"I apologize." He called down to her.
"Um, ow." She cried as he lowered her the last couple feet. She cringed at the cold water but forced herself to ignore it as her feet touched the bottom and she felt around for Jill, her hand finally brushing against something that wasn't rock. She grasped it and pulled it towards her where the tiniest amount of light was and she let out another scream, seeing it was a snake and not her great, many times over grandmother.
"What is it?" Jack called down to her.
"Snakes." She screamed as she threw her arms out and frantically began feeling around, praying she didn't get another snake. They were creepy and slimy and oh god, please let there not be others.
Finally, her hands felt something that she knew was cloth and she grabbed it, pulling it closer to her. It was an arm, attached to a body that was not responding to her but Kenzie could see the burns all over her and knew she needed blood as soon as possible. Realizing Jill had been down there a long time and needed out, Kenzie grabbed her around the waist, locking her hands as she yelled for Jack to pull them up.
It seemed to take forever to pull them up, although Kenzie knew it was still a lot faster than if it were humans pulling them up, but she felt her grasp slipping, her arms aching, despite being super strong from cheerleading and yelled for Jack to go faster because she was about to lose her. Suddenly they were moving much faster and when they were out of the well, Jack grabbed Jill from her and Kenzie was left dangling in the opening of the well. Then she realized that Jack had Jill, so who was holding the rope? She pushed off the side of the wall to spin herself around, her eyes widening in shock and gasping at seeing who was there.
Elijah.
