"Don't get me wrong," Klaus muttered sleepily as he poured coffee in a cup. "I love Savannah, but taking care of her every second is exhausting."
"No kidding," Amy yawned. She watched as Klaus took a few sips of coffee, shuffled a few steps, and then gravity brought him down.
Amy managed to zap a pillow in place so that he didn't smash his head on the kitchen floor, but the second his head hit the pillow, his eyes closed. Amy smiled and put a blanket over him and a mattress under him, then went to put the sleeping Savannah in her carrier and brought her into the kitchen, before crawling beside Klaus and falling asleep herself.
A few seconds later, Roxie let herself in with her key. She was there for her and Klaus' weekly day of bonding, but when she saw Klaus and Amy asleep, she decided it could wait a few hours, or maybe even a whole day. She was about to leave the kitchen when she saw Savannah open her eyes. Before the baby could open her mouth to cry, Roxie had picked her up, carrier and all, and taken her back to her bedroom, then went to the kitchen to get her a bottle. While Roxie was doing this, she heard Amy wake up and cry, "Oh, my god, Klaus! Savannah is missing!"
"Don't worry!" Roxie called, coming into the kitchen. "I've got her taken care of. Go back to sleep!"
Amy smiled and advanced on Roxie. "You're so sweet for doing this," she said and reached out. "I want to hug you."
"No!" Roxie replied, darting backward while still keeping a good grip on Savannah. "I'm doing a nice thing for you, but you really don't want to push me!"
"Give it a rest, Amy," Klaus advised. "Roxanne has agreed to watch Savannah, so let's take advantage of the opportunity and get some rest."
"Yeah!" Roxie called after them. "Rest only! No sexy stuff!"
"Don't worry," Klaus assured her. "We're both too tired for that at the moment. When we say we'll be sleeping, we definitely mean it."
"All right," Roxie nodded. "I just wanted to make sure."
A few seconds later, she heard the door to Klaus and Amy's bedroom close. She finished giving Savannah her bottle and then brought her to her room. "Are you gonna take a nap too, like your mommy and daddy?" She asked. But Savannah seemed very much awake.
"I knew you weren't gonna make this easy for me," Roxie told her and set her down in her bed while she looked around for toys for her and Savannah to play with. Finally, she grabbed a smaller bear from Savannah's bed, sat Savannah in her lap, and then pretended to make the bear dance.
Savannah babbled eagerly and drooled a little. Roxie cleaned her off and then gave her her pacifier, and then a little while later, the baby's eyes closed and a grateful Roxie tucked her in.
When Roxie got to the living room, the phone rang. She snatched it up before it could wake anyone. "What?" She growled.
"Are you still there, Roxie?" Vince asked. "I thought you and your dad would have been gone by now."
Roxie sighed. "There was a change of plans," she said. "When I got here, I found Dad, Amy, and Savannah all asleep on the kitchen floor with pillows and a mattress, so I told them I would watch Savannah while they slept."
"Well that's very kind," Vince told her. "Want me to come and keep you company?"
"Sure," Roxie replied. "Why not? The baby is asleep. I don't have anything else to do."
"All right," Vince nodded. "I'll be there in a little bit."
"Well, look who's here!" Roxie exclaimed in a whisper and threw herself into Vince's arms.
"Why are we whispering?" Vince asked when they pulled apart.
"I told you," Roxie replied. "Dad and Amy are asleep, and so is Savannah, and I don't want to wake any of them."
"Oh, yeah," Vince nodded as he entered the house. "That's right, you told me that." He sat down on the sofa and patted the empty cushion next to him. "Sit by me," he urged.
"You don't have to tell me twice," Roxie replied and sat, putting one of Vince's arms around her as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"So," Vince said, "What motivated you to offer to watch your half-sister? That was nice."
"Well," Roxie replied, "Dad and Amy looked tired, and I know what that's like, so I thought I'd give them a break. They can owe me big later."
Vince sighed. "I knew you wouldn't do something nice for free! I knew there would be a catch!"
"I was kidding, all right?" Roxie asked. "I mean, if they offer to pay me or something, I won't say 'no', of course, but I actually don't mind watching Savannah. I don't know what it is about her. Maybe I'm feeling some sort of need to take care of someone now that Joey is gone and Savannah fits the bill."
"Maybe," Vince nodded. "But whatever the reason is, I'm proud of you."
Roxie nodded. "Thanks," she said. "And in case you wondered, I'll still have it in me to come to work tonight."
"Good," Vince nodded. "Cause you won't want to be home. Addie called to tell me that Laura and Edward are engaged and she's very upset she lost her wingman."
"Hey, she'll get through it," Roxie shrugged. "If I can get through Charlie and Tony moving away, then she can deal with Laura getting engaged. But that's still a bit of a shock, though. Don't you think Laura and Edward are kind of an unlikely couple?"
"Well, it doesn't really matter what we think, does it?" Vince asked. "The point is, they love each other, and we should support them. I mean, who knows what they have to put up with at home because of it."
"Most likely nothing," Roxie said. "Laura told me Uncle Elijah's been rooting for that to happen ever since they met. And also that them being engaged was the only way Uncle Elijah would allow them to move in together." She giggled. "He's such a prude!"
"I don't know about that," Vince replied. "He and your mom do have six kids."
"Well, let me rephrase," Roxie said. "He's a prude about other people besides himself having sex."
"Well, Laura is just a teenager," Vince replied. "Can you blame him for being a little nervous? I mean, stuff happens. Like remember when you and I-"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Roxie nodded. "I get your point. Let's watch TV and not talk anymore, all right?"
Vince nodded and they sat watching TV in silence until Klaus and Amy both stumbled from bed and told Roxie she was free to go home.
"You know," Klaus told Amy the next day, "I have an idea and you might hate me for this, but here it is: "If we let Roxie be Savannah's babysitter, you could come with me to get Adrian's body away from Helene! I was gonna have Roxie help me, but honestly, I think that her spending time with Savannah is a much better way to distract her from the loss of Joey."
"You know," Amy told him, "If I hadn't seen Roxie be so good with Savannah before, I would have immediately said 'No', and thought you were crazy, but Savannah does seem to like her. That and I really want to come with you to see Helene. I think we'll have a better chance of getting Adrian out easily now that I'm coming. My relationship with Helene is probably better than Roxie's, and I won't let anger about what she's doing to Adrian's body make me treat Helene badly. All in all, I think it's a genius idea."
Klaus grinned. "Well, I am known to come up with them occasionally."
"So when do you think we should go?" Amy asked.
Klaus shrugged. "As soon as possible, I would think. Once we get word that Roxie will be available to babysit."
"You should be the one to call her," Amy said. "I think she still doesn't like me."
"Don't let that bother you," Klaus told her. "It takes awhile for Roxanne to like anyone. You're not alone." But he called Roxie's house anyway. "Hello?" Said a voice that wasn't Roxie's. "Who is this?"
"Addison?" Klaus asked. "Is that you? It's your grandpa."
"Oh, hi, Grandpa!" Addie responded. "Would you do me a favor?"
"Sure, sweetheart," Klaus replied. "What do you want from me?"
"Would you tell your stupid brother that Laura and Edward shouldn't have to be engaged to live together?" Addie asked. "I lost my wingman because of that!"
Klaus chuckled. "I hate to tell you this, dear, but I have about as much influence over my brother as he has over me, which is to say not much."
"Damn!" Addie swore. "It's so much harder to find men by myself."
"Why is that?" Klaus asked. "You're a beautiful girl, just like your mother."
"I don't know why!" Addie responded. "It just is!"
"Do you know for a fact that you lost Laura as your wingman, or is that just what you assume?" Klaus asked.
"Well, that has to be how it is, doesn't it?" Addie asked. "Why would Laura want to hang out with me when she's got a fiance? I swear, first Mom and Dad agree to move Joey out to Aunt Enid's and now Laura is getting engaged. Everyone is leaving me!"
"Well, like I told you," Klaus repeated, "Talk to Laura before you assume she abandoned you. You're most likely worrying for nothing. Now, is your mother there?"
"No," Addie sighed. "She and Daddy are both at work. You'll have to call her at the bar if you want to talk to her."
"All right," Klaus nodded. "I'll do that. Thank you, dear."
"You're welcome," Addie replied, her voice morose.
Klaus hung up and dialed the bar.
"Hello?" Roxie answered. "Enid's bar, how may I help you?"
"Roxanne, it's your father," Klaus said. "I have a favor to ask you."
"Is it to watch Savannah again?" Roxie asked. "Cause I will."
"You will?" Klaus asked in surprise. "Good! Cause Amy and I need to go see Lenora and James and get your brother's body away from Helene, because according to your mom, she's really doing a number on him."
"Adrian's letting Helene beat him up?" Roxie asked in surprise. "I mean, I know he did crappy stuff to her, but just allowing her to beat him up is going a bit far, don't you think?"
"She's not beating him up," Klaus told her. "He was immobilized by your Uncle Kol when he tried to rescue Helene, Felicity and Lenora after your uncle kidnapped them. Lenora then invited Helene to bring Adrian's body to her and James', so the two of them could stay together until Helene figures out how to get the sword out of him."
"So she doesn't know how to get the sword out?" Roxie asked. "I would have thought that would be easy!"
"Not as easy as it normally is," Klaus told her. "Apparently, Adrian and Helene's relationship was so problematic in the witch community that Helene is not allowed to pull the sword out of him until she proves that she really, genuinely loves him."
"And now she's stabbing him instead? Not fair!" Roxie growled. "She's not even trying! I never thought I'd say this, but I think I hate her more than Vince's sister Tessa now."
"Just relax," Klaus told her. "Leave it to Amy and me and we'll get it all sorted out. Everything will be fine."
"All right," Roxie told him. "When do you want me to be at your house?"
"How about tomorrow?" Klaus asked. "That'll give Amy and I time to pack and everything."
"All right," Roxie replied. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Adrian was, of course, unaware of what was being done to his body. The only thing he was aware of was what was in his head. Ever since he'd been stabbed, he'd been living in a world that could have been, if he hadn't been stupid enough to leave Helene when she'd annouced she was pregnant with Felicity. In this world, he had a second chance...
"So tell me again," he said as he got in bed next to Helene. "Tell me the good news again."
"I'm pregnant," Helene repeated for the third time. "I know we said we weren't gonna have any more kids after Lenora, but I just...would you mind one more?"
"Of course not!" Adrian replied. "Have you told Lenora yet?"
"No," Helene grinned and shook her head. "She's asleep already. I thought it could wait until morning. Are you really happy? Or are you just saying that for my benefit?"
"I'm really happy," Adrian told her. "I promise. Just please, this time around, would you let me teach the baby just as much vampire stuff as you do witch stuff? It'll be just as much a vampire as it will be a witch and you can't let it go around knowing about only half its powers because you think the demonstration of said powers is disgusting."
"I know," Helene sighed. "I just...the sight of a toddler hunting and drinking blood...it kind of creeps me out. I remember what you looked like when we were kids after you fed and it was not pleasant."
"I promise I'll be careful when I teach the kid how to hunt if you find it in yourself to allow me to teach the kid to hunt in the first place," Adrian countered. "Can you do that? Please?"
"All right," Helene nodded. "I guess." She yawned. "I don't know about you," she said. "But I need to go to bed!"
"Yeah," Adrian sighed as she settled down under the blankets and he cuddled next to her and gave her one last kiss as they both fell asleep.
They were awakened the next morning by an eight-year-old Lenora jumping up and down on their bed. "Wake up!" She cried. "Wake up!"
"What did we say about jumping on the bed?" Adrian asked her. Lenora stopped jumping and sat down on the bed with a pout. "You said not to," she replied, her eyes downcast.
"Exactly," Adrian nodded and hugged her. "Good girl. Now, I'll go help you find some breakfast and then your mommy and I have some big news for you!"
"What is it?" Lenora asked, running after him as they headed to the kitchen with Helene following behind. "Am I getting another puppy? Please let it be another puppy!"
"Actually," Helene replied, "It's not a puppy. You're gonna be a big sister soon. Your daddy and I are gonna have another baby."
"But you said that you and Daddy decided you weren't gonna have any more after me!" Lenora cried. "Are you gonna have another baby cause Daddy isn't fixed like Rusty?"
"No," Helene shook her head. "We're having another baby because we changed our minds about having just one child. People can do that, you know!"
"All right, all right!" Lenora put up her hands. "I was just asking! Now what can I have for breakfast?"
"What about cereal?" Adrian asked. "You love cereal. And then we'll drop you off at Damon's for the day while Mommy goes to talk to Grandma at the council and I just...go and do secret stuff you're not old enough to know about yet."
"Are you going to a bar to have lots of alcohol?" Lenora asked. "Cause I know about that. That's what you did when you and Mommy got married."
Adrian's eyes widened and he stared at Helene. "Did you tell her that? Why would you tell her that?"
Helene shrugged. "I'm sorry!" She said. "We were looking through the pictures and she asked why you looked so funny, and so I told her. It doesn't make her think any less of you!"
"Oh, good god!" Adrian cried, running his fingers through his hair. "Now I really do need to go have a very stiff drink!"
"Now remember," Amy told Klaus as they arrived on James and Lenora's doorstep, "I'm gonna do most of the talking here. I think that would be best."
"And if for some reason talking fails, do I have your permission to raise hell and take names until we have Adrian's body safely stored somewhere away from here?"
"Fine," Amy nodded. "But only if talking doesn't work!"
Klaus nodded and then Amy knocked on Lenora and James' door. It was opened a few minutes later by Susanna with Lenora standing behind her. "Hi," the little girl said and then blushed and ran away from them all leaving Lenora alone.
"She's kind of shy about answering the door if you can believe that," Lenora said. "Good instincts, actually. How did you guys get here?"
"I actually got Astrid to put a portal in one of our closets when I found out Helene was here," Amy said. "Can we come in and talk to her?"
"Sure," Lenora replied, opening the door a little further so they could come inside. "But if you've come to talk to Mom about Daddy, I think you're wasting your breath. She's at the 'I want to hurt him' stage, and I think it will be awhile before it ends."
"Oh, we're not here to talk her out of it," Amy told her. "We're here to see about Adrian's body being removed to a safer location."
"Cause the thought of Adrian's body being hurt so much is really upsetting his mother," Klaus added. "Even if Helene does have every reason to hurt him."
"Actually, I think if you're planning on taking Daddy away, James would be more than happy to help you. He won't admit it out loud, but I think having Mom here is kind of making him uneasy," Lenora said as they sat on the sofa and she took Susanna in her lap.
"Well, I'm not surprised!" Klaus said. "I mean, who can feel completely at ease knowing they have a crazy woman locked up somewhere in their house who has access to weapons and is actually hurting someone with them."
"I would say Edward Rochester," Amy replied. "But he's a fictional character who locked his crazy wife away in an attic, and who only felt panicked about it when he got engaged again and his crazy wife tried to kill his fiancee right before their wedding. But that's a fictional story. This is real life."
Just then, James came in. "I wondered who was at the door!" He said, looking at Amy and Klaus. "How are you two?"
"Good!" Klaus said and came to shake hands with him. "Thanks. We have a proposition for you, and according to Lenora, it's something you'll be very amenable to."
"That depends," James replied. "What is it?"
"We need you to help us get Adrian's body away from Helene as quickly and smoothly as possible," Amy said. "Can you help us with that?"
"Sure!" James replied. "It would be my pleasure. Anything to get that crazy woman to calm down." He looked sheepishly at Lenora. "Sorry, love," he said. "I know we're talking about your mother."
Lenora sighed. "I admit she might not be at her most stable right now and maybe getting Dad away from her until she's in a better frame of mind would help."
"All right," James said. "Now that that's decided, who wants to go poke the lion first?"
"I'll go," Amy volunteered. "I'll go talk to her. Maybe I can convince her just to let Adrian go for awhile, and then we won't have to resort to violence!"
James snorted. "You've obviously not been in Helene's room. She's not just gonna give Adrian up. I've a feeling she's got much more anger to get through!"
Amy just sighed and Lenora led them all to Helene's room. There were still a bunch of very unsetting noises issuing from it. "Well, all," James said, looking at Amy and Klaus. "Good luck!"
"Mom!" Lenora called. "Amy's come to visit! Can she come in?"
The unsettling noises stopped. "Amy is here? Sure she can come in!"
Lenora opened the door and Amy, Klaus, and James rushed in before Lenora shut it.
"I see Amy," Helene said, and then looked at Klaus and James sourly. "What do you two want?"
"We came to talk about Adrian," Amy told Helene, trying to stay calm. "His mother is very upset about what you're doing to his body."
Helene scoffed. "She can be upset as she wants. That doesn't mean I have to stop."
"But the whole point of having Adrian's body was for you to start to feel positive things for him so you can pull the dagger out," James told her. "Are you even trying?"
"I know you're a little late to the party," Helene told James. "But he treated me like shit, okay? He abandoned me when I was pregnant and spent the entire time having pool parties with floozies and sleeping with a woman I hate. And that wasn't even the first time he screwed me over. On our prom night, I died and came back as a ghost, and you know what he told me? He told me to go and find the light so he could continue sleeping with the same girl I hate! So don't tell me that at this very moment, I have to have positive feelings for him, because I don't have to. Now just go and leave me alone!"
Amy gazed at Klaus and James. "You two wait in the hall for me," she said. "I think I have this under control."
They left her alone with Helene. "I know you have every right to be mad at him," she said. "But you being this hurt by every bad thing he did means that deep down, you love him. If you didn't care about him, you wouldn't be hurting now."
"You think?" Helene asked.
"Yeah," Amy nodded. "I do."
"I thought he cared about me," Helene said. "You don't just abandon someone you care about!"
"No," Amy shook her head. "You don't. Sometimes, people are jerks. Like my parents. When they found out I was pregnant with Savannah, they disowned me. But I got past it and I'm much happier now. Do you still love Adrian?"
"Yeah," Helene nodded. "I always have. But the problem is that I don't think he cares about me and that's why he left. If he'd truly cared, he would have stayed!"
"I know it's frustrating," Amy said. "And I know that having Adrian here and being able to stick knives in him is cathartic for you, but overall, what does it help? That's why Klaus and I want to take Adrian away somewhere safe while you work through your anger, then we'll bring him back when you're better. Does that work? You don't need to rush. Take all the time you want."
"Oh, all right," Helene sighed. "You can take him. But I still don't like him yet."
"I know," Amy replied. "I know it will take time. But you have that. You also have me, and Lenora. If you ever want us to help you through this, we will. You just have to say something."
"All right," Helene nodded. "Would you leave me alone now, please? Just take Adrian and go before I change my mind?"
"Sure," Amy nodded. "Goodbye, Helene. I hope I'll see you soon." She then left the room, and she, James, and Klaus brought Adrian's body to Klaus and Amy's and stored it in a spare bedroom of their own.
