Patrick rang the doorbell at Wyndermere and waited to be ushered inside. Tonight was Robin and Nicholas' engagement party. He was there because he'd promised to attend; but, he wasn't happy that it was tonight of all nights. When the door opened, Emma, dressed in an adorable fluffy dress, bounded past Alfred with a "Daddy!"
"Hey, munchkin. Don't you look beautiful."
Emma smiled and twirled around so he could see her dress from all angles. Then, she grabbed his hand, "Come on, daddy, come see the decorations. I helped!"
When they walked into the room, Patrick saw that it was all decorated with white twinkle lights and candles. When he heard Emma say, "Look, Mommy! Daddy's here!" he turned and saw Robin enter the room dressed in a cocktail dress and heels with her hair up. Patrick was greeting Robin when Nicholas walked in behind her and came up next to her. He shook Nik's hand and said "Congratulations. I hope you will both be very happy."
They stood there talking for a few minutes until more guests started arriving and Patrick retreated to a corner, drink in hand. Today had been tougher than he thought and, when he heard Sabrina's voice in the foyer, he knew it was about to get even worse.
As Sabrina, accompanied by Nate and little Nori, rode the ferry to Robin's engagement party, she stared into the water and thought about how hard today was hitting her. Although she had come to terms with everything and found happiness with Nathan, she couldn't help but wonder about what might have been if things had been different.
Sabrina exchanged greetings with the other guests while Nate took Nori's coat off. The second she walked into the great room, she sensed Patrick's presence. He was standing alone in the corner observing the party looking pretty forlorn. He tipped his champaign glass at her in acknowledgment just as her family joined her. Nate had been shocked to learn about Nori's existence, but not surprised that Megan got pregnant and kept Nori from him. After confirming that Nori really was his, Nathan demanded time with his daughter. When Megan refused, he'd taken her to court and won visitation. He was currently battling her for full custody and Megan, as promised, was making their lives miserable in the process.
As Sabrina took Nori from Nate, he leaned down to give her a quick peck on the cheek. Just then, Robin and Nik came over to welcome them. After greeting the couple, Nate excused himself and made his way over to Patrick. Sabrina wondered at their conversation, which looked serious, until Emma bounded over. "Hi, Sabrina! Hi, Nori!"
Sabrina kneeled down so that Emma could greet Nori and smiled as Nori gave Emma a hug. No matter what had happened between her and Patrick, Sabrina still loved Emma as her own and couldn't help but smile at their interaction. As Nik joined Nate and Patrick in the corner, Robin came over. "Sabrina, can I steal you for a few minutes?"
Knowing it was about their little project, Sabrina said, "Sure, Robin. I just need to give Nori to Nate."
Robin followed as Sabrina made her way over to her husband. "Nate, can you take Nori for a few minutes?"
"Sure, um, why?" he asked as he reached out for his daughter.
Sabrina and Robin exchanged glances. Robin simply said, "Girl chat." and then grabbed Sabrina's hand and led her to another room.
Patrick, Nicholas and Nate looked on at Robin and Sabrina going off to chat in confusion. Patrick blurted, "What is that about? When did they get so chummy?"
Nate thought about it and then said, "About the same time you and I got so chummy, Patrick."
At that, Nicholas butted in and said, "Alright you two, what is going on? Do I need to be concerned?"
"So, what did you find out?" Sabrina asked anxiously.
"Well, my mom was able to get me the autopsy reports on Nina Clay and Bart Sampson, the victim in Nates botched homicide case. We already knew, and the report confirms, that Nina died of a drug overdose. The other report, however, concerns me."
"How so?"
"This might sound crazy, but I think that Bart's homicide was professional. It was a messy death, but I think it was staged that way."
"So, what are you saying, Robin?"
"I think it was a mob hit, Sabrina."
"A mob hit?"
"I think someone killed Bart to shut him up. The question is 'Why?'"
Before they could discuss the matter further, Nicholas poked his head in the room. "Robin, are you coming back out? We have guests."
Sabrina, shocked by the turn of events, told Robin to go ahead. She'd be right out. The two women nodded, promising silently to continue their investigation, as Robin left. Sabrina knew in her gut that Megan had something to do with this. She just had to figure out what. As she opened the door to leave, she ran into Patrick, who was standing on the other side. "Geeze, Patrick, you scared me. What's up?"
Patrick didn't say a word. He simply egged her back inside the room and closed the door.
Patrick knew that if Sabrina and Robin were in cahoots, it couldn't be good. When Nate told him Sabrina had started spending more time with Robin outside the hospital, he grew concerned. As far as Patrick knew, the women had grudgingly become friendly acquaintances so it didn't make sense for them to suddenly be thick as thieves.
"What are the two of you up to, Sabrina?"
He saw Sabrina momentarily avert her eyes and swallow before looking back at him and saying innocently, "Nothing, Patrick."
Patrick moved closer to her and said, "Sabrina, I know you better than anyone. And I know that you are lying to me."
"Even if I were, Patrick, I don't see how it is any of your business since neither of us are your wives. What I would like to know, however, is what you and my husband were talking about earlier. You looked awfully intense for two people who can barely stand each other."
Patrick just shrugged and said, "Nothing impeticular. Guy stuff."
Sabrina looked at him skeptically. "Right... Well, if you won't tell me, Nathan will." Sabrina smiled mischievously as she stepped toward him and added, "I can be very persuasive."
Patrick leaned down and whispered, "I remember. But he won't tell you either."
The two of them stood there for a moment, each refusing to back down until Sabrina exhaled a breath and stepped back. She was about to say something when Patrick finally said what he sought her out to say. "I've thought about you all day, Sabrina... What might have been if Robin hadn't interrupted our wedding..."
Sabrina sighed. "Patrick, please don't do this..."
"We would be a family. You, me, Emma and our son would be celebrating our first anniversary tonight. We would be so happy..."
Patrick saw Sabrina's defenses go up before she said, "But we aren't, Patrick. Robin did interrupt our wedding and you chose her."
"It was a mistake. I'm so sorry Sabrina," he said as he grabbed her hand and placed it in his.
She looked at Patrick wistfully as if she were fighting back tears and pulled her hand out of his to touch his cheek as she said, "I'm sorry, too, Patrick." Then, she dropped her hand and walked toward the door. "I have to get back to Nate and Nori. I'll see you later. Take care, Patrick."
"You, too." Patrick whispered to the empty room.
