Chapter 26
We all stand, forming a line, Alice to my right and Rachel to my left. Slowly, almost like ghosts, Sam and his pack emerge from the fog. Sam steps forward, a snarl on his face, and thunder-like growling can be heard from both sides. He stops leaving plenty of room between the two armies. He stares at us a moment longer before he starts to change. He stands proudly and grins at us.
"I see you have made an addition to your little coven. As you can see, so have we." He stretches his arms out and I take a look and notice, for the first time that their numbers have risen. Behind Sam stands 19 wolves, all snarling and growling with anticipation. With a smirk, Sam puts his arms down. "This is your last chance, she wolf, either join us or you and your friends die," he stops and gives Rachel a thoughtful look, "your friend can come, too." Rachel growls and snaps her teeth a couple times and Sam shrugs. "Have it your way." He turns to go back when two wolves move forward in line. One gray and one a sand color. The pack begins to growl and whine, shifting from paw to paw. They glance nervously between the two wolves and Sam. The sandy one shifts.
"We aren't fighting with you Sam," Seth says calmly.
"What?" Sam asks sounding murderous.
"Leah and I aren't fighting. There isn't a reason to. They haven't broken any laws, the pact is still intact. We aren't going to fight."
"You don't have a choice," Sam says darkly and Seth looks at him before turning to walk away. "Seth! Obey me and stay and fight!" Seth looks over his shoulder once more before shifting and running into the woods, Leah on his tail. Sam roars with rage and whips back, facing us.
"That's too bad, Sam, looks like you aren't as high and mighty as you thought you were. You can't even keep your pack in line." Emmett says laughing and Sam growls, his teeth grinding together.
He moves back into the line and growls once before lifting his head and howling his war cry. Immediately his pack surges forward. Leaving Sam, a russet colored wolf, and lighter brown one behind.
Rachel gives a bark and we all run forward, the space between us and the pack disappearing quickly. I turn and look at Alice before giving a quick bark, she nods and drops back, moving towards Edward. I focus on the wolf running at me, a blonde wolf smaller than me, but more muscular.
The sound when we clash is deafening. Loud cracks and snarling fill the once quiet clearing. The blonde wolf launches himself at me, teeth bared, and we collide harshly. His stockier frame throws me backwards and we hit the ground snapping at each other, my legs pushing against his chest and stomach. I manage to push him off of me long enough to stand and throw myself at him, aiming for his throat. He tries to side step me but is slow and I manage to grab his shoulder. I feel his teeth clamp down on the scruff of my neck, but I begin to shake my head back and forth. I push with my legs, trying to knock him off balance, but he jerks his head sharply and I lose my footing. We fall to the ground, and he releases me. I roll onto my back and kick him in the head, dazing him momentarily, but it's enough to maneuver my way behind him. I grab his left back leg in my mouth and shake my head violently. A loud, high pitched whine escapes him, and I release his bloodied leg. He moves to stand, but his leg can't support him, his tendons have been torn. Knowing that he won't be back, I leave him to find my next target.
Immediately, I am slammed into and a sharp pain blooms in my side. I snap my jaws and lash out and barely catch my new attacker, a steel gray wolf, by the ear. He yelps and slams me into the ground, his jaws clamping down behind my ear and under my jaw. I manage to grab him by the throat and wrap my paws around him. I use all my strength to pull him sideways and he lands heavily beside me. Even in the awkward position, I manage to stand. I shake my head, pressing down on him and I can hear him struggle to breathe. I bite down harder and jerk my head but his grip doesn't lessen, his teeth ripping into my flesh, past the protective layer of thick fur. I finally get a break when he gasps for air, releasing me. I get a better grip on his throat and shake him until he goes limp in submission. I release him and he immediately dashes off into the forest, but not without a bite to the legs as a reminder not to come back.
Not immediately attacked, I shake the blood out of my eyes and take a quick look around to see how the fight is going. Carlisle and Esme, fighting back to back, are giving the two wolves taking them both on a run for their money. Jasper and Emmett are both facing two opponents each and are doing well. Jasper dodging and flanking his opponents, using them against each other. Emmett is using brute force against his two. The light brown wolf that Alice is fighting seems utterly confused. He goes to attack and she is no longer there, she seems to flit around his every move until she flips above him, grabbing him by the scruff of his neck and picks him up, slamming him into the ground when she lands on her feet. Rachel and Rosalie are fighting side by side against five wolves and not seeming to have any trouble as Rachel throws wolves to Rosalie and she punches them into the ground.
I look around for Edward, but I don't see him. He's not by Sam and his bodyguards (who are at the tree line watching looking none too happy.) I do a quick 360 but I still can't find him. I'm about to bark out at Rachel, but a loud crack, groan, and crash of a fallen tree on the other side of the clearing tells me where they are.
I take off after them and into the forest. More crashing and snarling lead me right to them where I see Edward pinned against a boulder, only his arms against the wolf's shoulders are preventing him from being headless. I race after them and instead of crashing into him, I grab him by the neck and throw him into a tree. The tree immediately shatters and the wolf jumps up, bits of bark falling away from him. He launches himself at me, and I dodge, hoping Edward will be right there. The wolf flies by me, and skids to a stop, he readies himself to attack again, but Edward jumps onto his back, wrapping his arms around his neck. The wolf yelps and falls backward, but Edward doesn't release his grip. Soon, the wolf stops resisting and Edward releases him. The wolf falls limp to the ground and Edward looks up grinning.
"Thanks, could have been interesting if you hadn't come along." I grin and bark at him before rushing back to the clearing. Alice had finished off her wolf and had moved in to help Jasper. Emmett quickly finishes off his final wolf and runs full speed at a chocolate colored wolf that has Rosalie by the arm. I make my way to Sam while Edward moves in to help Carlisle and Esme. Before I reach Sam, I notice Alice and Jasper dispatch the last wolf and rush in to help Rosalie, Rachel, and Emmett.
I reach Sam and his russet bitch and he grins at me, eyes gleaming. I snarl a challenge at him and he stands, slowly padding his way towards me. We are only about ten feet apart, I am ready to strike, when his body guard growls and jumps at me, and teeth bared aiming directly for my throat. I turn, ready to face him and bracing for impact when a blonde blur slams into my attacker, throwing them sideways. They roll on the ground snapping and snarling at each other, Rachel grabbing Bitch by the face and tearing him apart. He manages to get away, blood pouring down his face, only for a moment before Rachel is back slamming him into the ground and trying to rip his throat out. Sam chuckles, not sparing a glance at his second in command (so I had guessed anyway) and moves so that he is circling me.
We circle each other, both looking for an opening, Sam continues to grin, but I can't stop the growl from leaving my chest. I shout of surprise to my left distracts me and Sam doesn't waste the opportunity. He slams into my side before sinking his teeth into my shoulder and neck. He violently shakes me before tossing me to the side. I land heavily and pain shoots through my side. I don't have a moment to recover before Sam is on top of me, teeth at the back of my neck. I manage to kick him away enough to get up.
We jump at each other and I wrap my paws around his neck, teeth finding purchase at the side of his throat. I move to push us off balance when he bites my head. I can feel my ear splitting open and his teeth digging into my jaw. He shakes his head and bites down dangerously close to me eye.
Blood stinging my eyes, I use all of my strength to push us over. He lands on top of me and the same side that had hurt earlier gives a sharp crack and my entire side starts to burn. I end up releasing him and we roll to our sides and stand facing each other. I can feel the blood oozing from my ear and head and dripping into my eyes. We both are panting heavily and I am shaking slightly, but I run after him. He moves to the side, but I wasn't aiming for his throat. I manage to get ahold of his back leg and I start to shake as hard as I can, hoping to tear the tendon like I had done with the first one. Instead, he goes to sit and reaches over and grabs me. With a kick and a jerk, he throws me through the air and I crash into a large rock.
My vision is spotty and my hearing is a little muffled, but I sit up desperately looking for Sam. He is still in the same spot where he threw me from. He slowly gets up and makes his way to me, limping and bleeding. I move to get up when I cough, side burning, and taste blood. Wincing, I stand fully, my breathing labored and getting harder by the second.
Sam picks up his pace and I begin a slow trot. I manage to break out into a slow run and Sam must not be as badly hurt as I thought because he charges me. We hit each other, I try to bite any part of him I can reach but he manages to get me by the throat. Pushing forward, I fall to my side and he begins to shake.
I can feel his teeth cutting into my neck and my blood dripping down my throat and chest. He tightens his grip and I can no longer catch my breath. Spots dance in front of my eyes and I know that I'll be dead unless I can get him to let me go. A thought occurs to me and a memory flashes in my mind. Probably isn't my best idea, but it's my last option.
I let myself go limp. I'm not unconscious, but I stop breathing and moving. I close my eyes and pray that it'll work. Sam stops shaking me but doesn't release his grip. I open my eyes and see the Cullens watching our fight with horrified expressions. Rachel is barely standing in front of them, not letting them interfere. I focus as well as I can on Alice and study her. She is a mixture of rage and horror, her fists balled up at her sided, snarl on her face, but her eyes are filled with tears.
My vision starts to go black and I'm almost completely out of it when Sam starts to let me go. The pressure on my throat lessens and I try to suck in as much air as subtly as possible. He completely lets me go and I can hear the cries of the Cullen coven as well as the low whine from Rachel. Sam pulls away, barking a laugh and looks at the Cullens, a smirk on his face. He lifts his head for a triumphant howl and that is when I surge forward.
His completely unprotected throat is easy to get to. The force with which I pushed myself up forces an unprepared Sam backwards, my teeth digging into his throat. I don't give him a chance to fight back. I bite as hard as I can and shake my head once, twice until blood that isn't my own fills my mouth. Then I let him go, his body lying lifeless on the ground, blood seeping from his wounds. Once I'm sure he's dead I turn and face my pack.
My vision starts to tunnel and goes blurry, someone calls out my name but it's muffled. I look up and see Alice stepping towards me and I smile briefly before losing consciousness.
