Legends: The Nine Sages

Long ago, when the first Shaolin monastery was in the prime of it's age; Oogway, the first wielder of the Eternal Ember, led five warriors, the Furious Five, in a quest for justice. One one such quest, they happened upon a province overrun by an army of demons that fed on negative emotions. Many attempt to purge the province of these vile creatures . . . but none prevailed. Many had given all ope and were quick to abandon their home and anyone they deemed foolish to stay; be they friend, family, or stranger. Those who remained had either resorted to violence force, which ultimately led to the demons becoming stronger, or hide in hopes of formulating a plan.

Oogway and his disciples were quick to join the battle and were able to vanquish many demons, but were vastly outnumbered as hordes more took the place of their fallen. Forced to retreat, Oogway was able to make contact with Senlong, the King of the Dragons, for his counsel and words of wisdom. The Dragon King informed the tortoise that tough the Eternal Ember and Five Animal Amulets, the source of Oogway and is disciplines' powers, were enough to purify the land of the demons; they would need aid from nine individuals chosen by the power of nature.

One by one, each individual revealed themselves during battle, but even with their unity and prowess in combat as well as weapons, their powers lacked the necessary Chi. Oogway and his disciples, moved by the courage of these brave warriors, channeled their Chi to them; allowing the nine to unlock their true potential. With their powers combined, the heroes led many brave fighters into battle and rose victorious. These individuals would soon be known as the Jiu Xianxian Yuansu; The Nine Elemental Sages, for their mastery over nine forces of nature: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Metal, Wood, Lightning, Ice, and Sound.

Unfortunately, with the potential of their powers awakened, the nine individuals soon realized they were to surrender their mortal lives. Saddened by what they had no choice to do, Oogway decided to give them more purpose and tasked the Sages to to teach the next generation of any chosen by the Eternal Ember and Animal Amulets. They happily accepted this new purpose. One of the many chosen they would befriend would be an intelligent blackbuck who went the the name of Yao.
