They were in the middle of moving D to a room when he started to wake up. He was in a crib and started to look around. Then he let out a wail and that startled everyone. Derek and Pen looked at each other and knew that their son was scared. He had never cried like that, not even when he was tired and fighting sleep. Pen moved to the side where D could see her.
"It's ok baby, mommy and daddy are here."
He started crying harder and rolled over to get closer to her. they finally got to his room and Pen picked him up, cradling him to her.
"I'm here sweetheart." She whispered as she rubbed his back. "Your safe now. I promise."
With his face in her neck, his little hands gripped her shirt. The door opened and the nurse brought in a rocking chair. Pen sat down and started rocking him.
"Are you breastfeeding or bottle?"
"Bottle. I stopped when he turned eight months."
"He's drinking how many ounces?"
"Eight."
"Let me get him a bottle since they took the IV out. He might be hungry since we don't know when he last had one. I'll be right back."
She left and Derek knelt by the chair. He ran his hand down D's back. "Hey little man, daddy's here." He picked his head up and then laid against her shoulder. He would let out a whimper every few seconds. "It's ok. The bad people are gone."
The nurse came back in. "I brought bottle with milk. We don't have any eight ounce bottles but you can give him you can give him two."
She got one ready for him and then handed it to Pen. As soon as she gave him the bottle he started guzzling it down. She looked at Derek. He started choking he was drinking so fast.
"Hey, hey, slow down." She said patting his back. She gave him the bottle again. "Derek, do you think they were starving him?"
"I don't know Pen. But God I hope not."
"It looks like he hasn't been fed in a while. Most likely that was why he was dehydrated. Just give him eight ounces. We don't want to give him too much and then he gets sick."
"Can I give him a bath and change his clothes. I don't want him wearing that anymore."
"Sure. We can do that. There is a tub in the bathroom. I'll bring him a little gown."
The nurse left to get the gown and D had finished the second bottle. Pen burped him and handed him to Derek. He clung to Derek just like he did with Pen. He paced around rubbing his back.
"Momma is coming up here do you want me to call her and ask her to bring something for him."
"Ask her to bring some clothes, socks, diapers and one of his blankets."
He handed D back to Pen and stepped out to make a call. He caught his mom and Sarah before she left. She was going to bring somethings she had at her house for him. She also told him Des was on her way. He went back to the room and saw D had fallen asleep and Pen as singing to him.
"Did you get a hold of your momma?"
"Yeah. She said she was bringing things that she has." He said. "He fell asleep."
"He was trying to stay awake but I think he's too tired."
"Do you think now that we know that he is safe, you think you can eat?"
"I don't want to leave him."
"If I bring you something, we'll you eat it."
She nodded, gave her a quick kiss and left. He walked down the hall towards the elevator when he saw his team getting off. He stopped in front of them.
"Hey Derek, how is the baby?" JJ asked.
"Scared out of his little mind." He said with tears in his eyes. "He woke up and started screaming. We have never heard him cry like that. When we got to his room, Pen picked him up and he clung to her."
"He's terrified." Spence said. "He's so little and can't talk to you."
"How am I supposed to help him?"
"Be with him. Shower him with all your love and comfort him." Emily said. "How's Pen?"
"Relieved, happy, and sad because we don't know what they did to him." He said. "The suspect still hasn't talked."
"Not yet." Rossi said.
"D's asleep but you can go and see him."
"Where are you going?"
"To get something to eat for Pen." He said. "She hasn't really eaten in days."
"I'll go with you." Hotch said.
Derek and Hotch entered the elevator and the rest went to D's room. He waited for the door to close before he started asking questions.
"What did you find out?"
"She delivered a little girl. She has numerous problems for a preemie. As for Savannah, she has a concussion, broken wrist, a deep gash on her cheek, some sore ribs. She's heavily medicated. She's in a lot of pain. She did manage to tell the doctor that you are here and to talk to you about the baby."
"She doesn't know that we know." He said. "That isn't my baby, I want nothing to do with her. tell the doctor to call her parents but I'm sure they have seen the news and are probably on their way here. Call them anyway."
They stepped off the elevator just when Fran was coming through the door.
"How is the baby?"
"He's scared. He's dehydrated but we've feed him already. Did you bring his things?"
"I have them in the bag."
"Pen wants to give him a bath and change his clothes. I'm on my way to get something to eat. He's on the sixth floor room 6210. Momma, please don't overwhelm Pen with questions. She really doesn't know much. I haven't told her anything."
"I won't but is it true that Savannah was involved?"
"Yes. It was all her idea." He said. "I can't tell you anything else. I will answer your questions when I can."
Leaving Fran standing in the lobby, he walked out of the hospital. They went to a deli and ordered Pen a turkey sandwich and a bowl of fruit. They went back to the hospital and directly to D's room. The team was leaving.
"He's still sleeping so we are going to go and come back later." JJ said. "If you need anything, let us know."
"Again thank you for everything."
"D's is part of our family. We wouldn't have done anything less." Emily said. "Just so you know, Pen has been crying. She's just feeling overwhelmed."
"She won't take her eyes off of him." Spence said.
"I know." He said. "I think she is afraid he is going to disappear again."
"I'll call you when we find out any new information." Hotch said.
He walked in just when his son started stirring. He didn't wake, just moved and whimpered.
"He's done that the whole time he's been asleep." Pen said. "He's not sleeping comfortable."
"I brought a sandwich and fruit. Eat while he's asleep."
He fixed her food on the table and she began to eat. Nobody said anything, they just sat and watched D sleep. She was half way through her sandwich when he woke up screaming. Fran was closest so she picked him up. He screamed louder when he saw her. she stepped back.
"Oh my."
Derek reached into the crib. "Hey little man, it's ok. "he said picking him up. "I'm here and mommy is just over there."
Pen was wrapping up what was left of her sandwich. "Bring him here."
Derek handed her the baby. "I'm here sweetie. Your safe." She patted his back. "I'm not going anywhere."
Again they watched D cling to his mother. Derek looked up to see his momma and Sarah crying. "It's not you, momma. He's just scared."
She nodded unable to say anything. D had fallen asleep in Pen's arms while she rocked him. Sarah locked eyes on Derek.
"We are going to go. You two need to spend some alone time with him. Have they told you when they are going to release him?" Sarah asked.
"Tomorrow. They just want to keep for observation."
"Call us when you get home. Des will be here tonight. I'll tell her to hold off until we hear from you. he needs you right now. Not anybody else."
"Thanks Sarah. We'll call you."
"I'm so glad he is home safe and sound."
"We are too. Thank you for bring his things."
"There are some pajamas, an outfit, diaper and wipes. Oh and a couple of pairs of socks." Fran said.
"Thank you Fran." Pen said. "He just needs some time to realize he's safe."
"I know."
Derek watched them leave. He waited for the door to close. He went to Pen and took the baby from her hands and cradled him.
"You finish eating. I have a feeling we are going to need energy tonight."
They gave D a bath and changed him into some pj's. he drank another bottle; took another nap. JJ had sent them dinner so they wouldn't have to leave their son. They couldn't D in the crib without him waking up and crying. So they brought in a recliner so Pen could recline and have him sleep on her. They suggested given him something to help him sleep but she said no. no drugs. As soon as Pen fell sleep with D, he left the room. He went down to the maternity floor and asked the nurses station what room Savannah was in. He walked down the hall and saw a policeman guarding her door. He stopped at the door. He pushed the door open and saw her parents sitting with her. He ignored them went straight to the bed. He bent down so she could hear him. She opened her eyes.
"Derek, have you seen her?"
"You took my son. You were going to give him to a stranger. He is terrified of everyone. You are going to pay for what you did. You'll never be free again. You will go to prison and I'm going to make sure you stay there."
"I didn't do …."
"Stop with your lies. I know everything, even about the baby." Recognition hit her. "Your accomplices are talking. Don't ever try to contact me again. I want nothing to do with you."
He stood up and started to leave when her mother stopped him. "Have you seen your daughter?"
"That's not my daughter."
"What do you mean that isn't your daughter?" her father demanded.
"Talk to your daughter. Ask her what she did?" he said. "Ask her what she was planning for my son. Ask her?"
He left and went back to his family. He no longer had to deal with Savannah, except when she went to trial.
They were exhausted by the time they were able to take their son home. Derek decided they would go to Pen's. They were hoping being in familiar surroundings would calm him down. He wouldn't sleep in that crib last night, so sleeping in his own might help. He had a bottle before they left and had fallen asleep on the way home. Pen told Derek to put him in the bed and they would sleep with him because they were tired.
They had sent texts to everyone saying they were headed home. In the text, they said they would let everyone know when they were ready for visitors. As it had been for the last days, the reporters were staked out in the parking lot of Pen's apartment. Derek knew they wouldn't go away unless someone talked to them. He was going to ask JJ if she would read a statement they wrote to the press.
Des had called him to tell him she was there. She wanted him to tell her what was really going on. She had watched a report saying that Savannah had the baby kidnapped. He told her that much was true but he would talk to them when they came over but there were certain things that he couldn't tell them. He asked them to be patient and give them a couple of days with D.
D slept for several hours until his next feeding. They all got up and Pen opened a jar of baby food and Derek fixed him a bottle. He ate most of the food but he never took his eyes off of Pen. He followed her where ever she went. He babbled while he ate but as soon as she was out of sight he started whimpering. Derek picked him up to give him the bottle and he drank it. Pen was in the kitchen fixing in them something to eat. After the bottle, he tried to get him to play with some toys but all he did was crawl over to Derek and sat in his lap. Pen talked to D from the kitchen and he just sat on his lap. She placed the plates on the table and told Derek to put him back in the high chair. Pen gave him a little piece of her chicken.
"Derek I need answers to some questions?" she said moving her food around her plate. "I know you know some of them but I want them all answered."
"I know you do. Everyone wants answers."
"There is also something else I want to talk to you about."
"Go ahead."
"I'm taking some time off from work. We just got our son back and he cries every time I leave the room and honestly I don't want to leave him."
"How much time do you think you are going to ask for. I'm going to ask for two weeks."
"I'm going to ask for a month. To be honest I might not go back. This really scared me Derek. I don't know if I'll ever trust him with anyone again. It might take a long time."
"I understand how you are feeling but before you make any decisions, take your month."
"I will."
The team went on a case but before they left, JJ and Hotch read the released statement from the Morgan's. By the end of the day, the reporters had left except for a few. He guessed they were waiting to talk to them but they haven't left the apartment since they brought D home.
Derek called his family to ask them to come over. He was going to talk to them all together. He knew Pen would get upset when she found out he went and saw Savannah. He ordered takeout so Pen wouldn't have to cook. D was asleep in his bed when they came.
"Where's D?" Des asked.
"He's asleep." Pen said. "He's having trouble sleeping."
"I want to talk while he's asleep and before the food gets here." He said. "As you know Savannah was behind the kidnapping. She hired someone to follow us and take him. She was planning on give him to a woman so she could take him. She came forward when she saw his picture on the TV.
"Savannah did all this." Des asked.
"Yes. She was there when the exchanged happened. The team spotted her sitting in the park watching everything that was happening. She noticed she was spotted and took off. A chase ensued and her car was hit by another one and the car flipped. She was taken to the same hospital as D was. She delivered a baby girl."
"What? Why didn't you tell me yesterday?" she looked at Pen. "Sorry Pen but that is my granddaughter."
Pen just watched Derek. "Momma listen to what I am going to tell you. That baby is not my daughter. I'm sorry but that is the truth."
"Derek I know you think that …."
"No momma. She is not my daughter. We found out just a day after D was taken that she had been to a clinic and had been artificially inseminated. That little girl fighting for her life is not by baby."
"Are you serious?" Sarah asked.
"Yes. The team started investigating her when D went missing. She wasn't very smart. She left a paper trail and they found it. She used a different name but the people at the clinic recognized her picture."
"She was going to use that poor baby to get you to do what she wanted." Fran said. "How evil is that woman?"
"If it wasn't for that woman that recognized D, he would not be here with us. He would be with that woman in another state or who knows where." Pen said. "We owe her everything."
"I can't believe this." Des said.
"Have you seen her?" Sarah asked.
"I went to her room and her parents were there."
"When do you do this?" Pen said.
"I went when you and D were sleeping."
"What did she say?"
"She asked if I had seen my daughter." He said. "I told her that I knew everything and that I was going to do everything in my power to make sure she goes to prison and that she stays there."
Pen gave him a nod. "Is here accomplice talking?"
"No."
"What will happen to Savannah?" Fran asked.
"As soon as she's released from the hospital, she'll be arrested. She's hurt, just had a baby."
"What's going to happen to the baby?"
"I guess her parents will take her. Savannah's going to prison. No doubt about that."
D let out an ear piercing scream and Derek went to get him. He came back with him and handed him to Pen. He stopped crying immediately and just whimpered.
"He's still doing that?" Fran asked.
"He does when he doesn't see his mother." Derek said.
"So how do you do it at night?"
"He sleeps with us."
"Is that wise?"
"Momma." Des and Sarah said in unison.
Pen sat up straighter. "My son was kidnapped and who knows what he went through. He's scared and I'm going to do everything I can to make him feel safe again and if that means sleeping in bed with me, quitting my job or never letting me out of my sight, then that is what I'm going to do. He's only been back with us for three days."
Fran didn't say anything but looked at Derek. There was a knock on the door and he went to answer it. It was the food they ordered. She got up with D and placed him in the high chair. she talked to D the whole she was in the kitchen. She knew Fran was watching her. She came back and D smiled at her, hitting the tray. Everyone sat down to eat. She opened the jars of baby food. Derek fixed her a plate and she ate while she fed him. When he was done, he turned his attention to her food. He tried to reach her plate. She gave him a little bit of noodles and he didn't like it. He spits it out and made a face. Derek went to the kitchen and fixed him a bottle.
"Can I try to give him the bottle?" des asked.
"Go ahead."
Pen watched as Des started talking to him and she held her hands out as if to take him. He shook his head no. Sarah tried next and the same thing happened. Fran tried and got the same result. Derek picked him up and fed him the bottle.
"What are you going to do if he is still like that when you go back to work?"
"I'm might not go back to work." Pen said.
"Why not?"
"I don't blame you for anything Fran. It could have happened when he was with me or Derek but I don't want him out of my sight and I wouldn't feel comfortable taking to daycare or having anyone watch him. It's for my own piece of mind. I've take a leave and the end of one month, I will have decided if I go back to work or not."
