Chapter 26
Conway Springs, KS ~ A few days later…
"FBI? You're here about the Lady Killer Murders, aren't you?" The Sherriff asked.
"The Lady Killer Murders?" Sam replied.
"Yeah, coined it myself." The Sherriff stated proudly.
"Congratulations. What can you tell us?" Dean asked.
"Well, both victims were female, under 21, and here's the kicker -they were drained of all their blood." The Sherriff explained as they walked to his desk.
"Huh." Sam mumbled.
"Exactly. We found that strange, also. But then last night, things got even stranger."
"Last night?" Sarah asked.
"Yeah." The Sherriff said before turning on his computer monitor to show a surveillance video from the night before. "We set up a security cam on Fuller's Point for safety purposes. It's where our local young people like to go make out. Last night, things got crazy. Um… Miss you might want to look away. This is pretty graphic."
Sarah gave the Sherriff a hard look. "I can assure you, Sherriff, I will be fine. Play the video."
The Sherriff pressed play on the video and Sam, Dean and Sarah watched as a vampire attacked a couple of kids in a car but what was interesting was that the boy no older than 16 or 17 beheaded the vamp. He then was joined by two girls about his age.
"Hell of a thing, ain't it?" the Sherriff asked.
"Uh, you I.D. any of these people?" Sam asked.
"Well, not yet. Crime scene was empty when we got there. No vic, no nothing. Uh, I'm thinking it's some kind of cult or a drug thing. So I put a statewide A.P.B. out on these three about an hour ago." The Sherriff said zooming in on the video to show the faces of the three teenagers.
Sarah feels Dean tense next to her.
"I'm gonna need you to call that off. And we're gonna need this footage." Dean instructed.
"What?" The Sherriff asked confused.
"Sheriff, why do you think we're here? You just crossed streams with a federal investigation. Now, I suggest you cooperate, call off your A.P.B., or you're gonna find yourself in a world of hurt." Dean demanded.
"Uh...Right." The Sherriff complied, still confused.
"So, what was that all about, G-man?" Sam asked as they walked back to the impala.
"You remember Krissy Chambers?" Dean asked Sam. Sarah thought for a moment but came up with a blank.
"Uh, yeah, the Vetalas case, right? They were working that truck stop by the freeway. She and her dad helped us shut 'em down." Sam explained to Sarah. "You were being held by Dick at that time, Sarah."
"Oh." She replied.
"Right, and then he promised to go civilian so she wouldn't grow up to be a hunter. Well, guess who the star of this snuff film is?" Dean stated.
"Come on. Well, maybe he doesn't know she's doing this."
"What, sneaking out in the middle of the night to go hunt monsters with the Apple Dumpling gang? Is that what kids are doing for kicks these days?" Dean said sarcastically.
"Okay. Then maybe he knows, and he's helping her out." Sam interjected.
"What, get caught on "Candid Camera"? Let's just go find her before she gets into any more trouble." Dean replied as they got into the impala.
After a few hours of digging, they tracked Krissy to a motel. Dean and Sam went in to find her while Sarah watched to make sure she didn't try to give them the slip. It wasn't but a few minutes before a man jumped out of a second story window. Sarah raced after him as he ran toward a blue van. She quickly caught up and tackled him to the ground. He struggled against her, not trying to fight her but to get away from her. He managed to get out of her grip and tried to run off again, only to see Krissy approach them with her gun raised.
"Please! Don't shoot me!" the man cried out to them. Krissy then shot him in the leg and the man fell to the ground. "Don't shoot me! Please, don't -Please...It hurts so bad!"
"How did you drop him so quickly?" Dean asked he helped Sarah get up.
"Darts filled with dead man's blood." Krissy explained.
"Where's the blue van?" Dean asked.
"What blue van?" Krissy asked.
"The blue van that he was bolting to? Never mind." Dean quipped.
"It took off when the vamp started running toward it." Sarah informed them.
"Who are you?" Krissy asked giving Sarah a hard look.
"Easy, Krissy. This is Sarah. She's with me." Dean said, putting is hand up to assure Krissy. Krissy looked Sarah up and down before glaring at her. Dean took out a knife from his side holster and moved toward the vamp.
"Wait, stop! This is not your kill." Krissy warned.
"What are you talking about?" Dean asked.
Just then two other teenagers ran over to them, followed by Sam.
"Three months ago, this blood banger snuck into a house and killed three people in their sleep." The teenage girl explained.
"What?! No! I didn't do that!" the vamp pleaded.
"One was a woman -never hurt anyone! The other two, a brother and a sister." The girl continued.
"I don't know what you're talking about." The vamp tried again.
"I came home from a friend's house, and I found them. They were my family!"
"This isn't happening. I didn't do anything, I swear. Please, help me!" the vamp pleaded again.
The girl ignored him and used her machete to cut his head off. Dean and Sarah look around to see if anyone had seen them. Sam gave them an angry look.
"It's okay. It's over." Krissy comforted the other girl.
"I need to talk to you privately." Dean grumbled at Krissy. They started to walk away from the group.
"You know this guy?" the teenage boy asked as Krissy walked passed him.
"Yeah. We have a past." Krissy told him with attitude.
Sarah watched Dean walk across the street with Krissy and walked over to Sam herself. "What the hell is going on, Sam?"
"She told us that after her dad died, a hunter named Victor took her in, along with two other kids. Uh, Josephine and Aidan." Sam replied as they watched the teenagers wrap up the dead vamps body.
"What's the story on Dean and Krissy? She seems to be getting under his skin."
"He ended up having to work with her to find her dad and me after we'd been captured by the Vetalas. I think she was a pain in his ass in only the way a sister can be." Sam explained giving Sarah a smirk.
"What? I wasn't that bad." She fanned innocence, giving Sam a smile. She looked over at Dean and Krissy, and saw him growing frustrated with her. Krissy then started to walk back over to the group and helped them wrap the dead vamps head in a bag.
Dean mouthed a very frustrated, 'Wow', before rejoining Sam and Sarah.
"What happened?" Sam asked.
"Teenagers, that's what." Dean mumbled.
"She tell you about Victor?" Sam asked.
"Yeah. What do we think?" Dean asked.
"Well, didn't we meet up with a hunter named Victor one time in Spokane?" Sam recalled.
"That's a long time ago. I haven't heard about him since."
"All right, so, these kids are…" Sam started to say.
"Dangerous and off their meds? Yeah, no kidding." Dean finished for him.
"So, what? We go and talk with Victor?" Sarah asked.
"Ready?" Josephine asked before Aidan helped her picked up the wrapped body and toss it into the back of their red station wagon. Krissy followed them and tossed the wrapped head in after it.
"Okay." Krissy mumbled, slamming the back of the station wagon shut.
They followed the teenagers back to a nice two story house and were surprised by how ordinary everything looked. Victor came downstairs and and was updated by the three teenagers about their missions. All three of them were sent upstairs to get some rest, leaving Victor with Sam, Dean and Sarah.
He informed them that he was raising the next generation of hunters. That these kids would be faster and better than all of them, that they were a dream team of hunters.
None of this was sitting well with Sam, Dean or Sarah. They decided that Dean and Sarah would talk with the victim from the nights vamp attack. Sam would stay and keep an eye on the Victor and the kids.
After doing some research and looking around for the mysterious blue van, Dean and Sarah were able to talk with the victim.
"Like I told the cops already, I'm not sure why Jimmy Day would do something like this." The girl admitted.
"Jimmy Day? Wait, so you knew the guy that grabbed you?" Dean asked.
"Everyone in town knows Jimmy. He's a hero. We had a parade for him downtown when he came back from Afghanistan." The girl explained.
"When was this?" Sarah asked.
"A few weeks ago."
"So, uh... this Jimmy Day guy, he - he just grabbed you and took you to the hotel?" Dean asked.
"No. I-I came from work and was in the parking lot when this blue van pulled up. This guy with a hoodie asked me directions. That's all I remember, till I woke up tied to that bed."
"And was hoodie there, too?" Dean questioned.
"Just Jimmy, and he was crying, saying he was sorry and all. That he was sorry? At first I thought he was gonna kill me. But then he just... he just seemed scared."
Dean and Sarah shared a look. Something was definitely off about this case.
"Hey. You there?" Dean asked into his phone. "You're on speaker phone."
"Yeah. How did it go with the girl?" Sam asked.
"Strange. Might be that vampire wasn't lying. He was fresh made within the month, but Josephine's family was murdered three months ago." Sarah informed.
"So, who killed them, then?" Sam asked.
"I don't know. I'd like to talk to whoever's driving that blue van. Other than that...You?" Dean replied.
"Something's up. Victor says he has a surveillance photo of the vampire that killed Krissy's father. But... I'm not so sure." Sam said.
"Why's that?" Dean asked.
"There's no time stamp on it." Sam stated.
"Okay. So you think he's lying?" Sarah asked.
"Well, that, or he's just wrong. It's hard to say." Sam replied.
"Yeah, I never trust a guy who wears a sweater. You want us to head back there?" Dean asked.
"No, no. I'm good. Let me do some more digging." Sam assured.
"All right. We're gonna talk to the hotel clerk, see what he knows." Dean said before hanging up the phone.
Sarah and Dean then talked with the hotel clerk and found out that the man who paid for the vamps room the night before had paid in cash but had stopped to look at the brochures that were lining a nearby wall. The hotel clerk told them that he had taken the brochure for a nearby lodge even though the lodge was closed at this time of year.
They then made their way over to the lodge to have a look. They quietly checked out the perimeter, both pulling out their machete's, ready for anything. Making their way up to the door, they found that it was already cracked open. Dean pushed the door open more and pulled out his flashlight to start looking around the room. Once inside they found a girl sitting on one of the bunk beds crying.
"Hey! Who the hell are you?!" Dean growled at the girl. She looked scared at them and shied away from their flashlights beams. "Answer me!"
"Please make it go away. It hurts so much." The girl begged.
"What? Wha..." Dean mumbled before switching on the room's lights.
"No, shut them off! They're too bright!" The girl cried out.
"Not till you tell us what the hell's going on here." Sarah said gruffly.
"I don't know!" the girl cried out when suddenly a set of vampire teeth pop out. Her hands moving up to her face to feel them. "Aah! What's happening to me?"
"Come here." Dean growled, quickly grabbing her and pulling her off the bed, placing his machete to her neck. "That's never happened to you before?"
"No. No, there's something wrong with me. That - that guy, he did something to me."
"What guy?" Sarah asked.
"I don't know! This guy in a blue van, he - he grabbed me. He took me here." The girl pleaded before bending over in pain. "Oh, my stomach. It hurts so much."
Sensing movement behind them, Sarah quickly pulled her gun out and spun around just as three guns aimed at her and Dean.
"Dean!" Krissy exclaimed, holding her gun on him. Aidan and Josephine behind her, their guns aimed on them too.
Dean put his hand out to stop them and moved in front of the girl. "Put those away, and we can talk."
"Why are you with the vampire that killed my dad?" Krissy asked angrily.
"You're barking up the wrong tree. She didn't kill your pops." Dean stated.
"I don't want to hurt you, Dean, but I will if you don't move." Krissy warned.
"Listen to me, Krissy. She's innocent." Dean responded. Motioning for Sarah to lower her weapon.
"And how would you know that?" Josephine asked.
"Because she's fresh made, a day or two. Her dad was killed months ago. This whole thing stinks. That vamp that we killed last night? Why was he swearing that he didn't do it?" Dean asked the teenage hunters.
"Because he was a liar." Aidan retorted.
"Vampires don't beg for their lives. They attack. Look, last time I'm gonna ask you nicely. Take the damn guns off me, or somebody's gonna get hurt." Dean growled.
"Big talk." Aidan said smugly.
"I know. It is, isn't it?" Dean said before quickly disarmed Aidan and cleared his gun, letting the chamber fall to the floor.
"So, let's say this isn't the vamp who killed my dad. She's still a monster and deserves to die." Krissy asserted.
"Not if we can save her." Sarah inserted.
"What?" Aidan asked skeptically.
"She hasn't fed yet. We can reverse this if we find her maker and get his blood." Dean explained.
"And why should we care about her?" Aidan asked.
"Like I said, hunting isn't always about killing." Dean stated.
"Oh, please. Preach to some other choir. We're not buying it." Aidan retorted.
"You want to kill an innocent girl?!" Dean yelled at him. Aidan's attitude was grating on both Sarah's and Dean's nerves. If Sarah was any closer to him, she would have wacked the boy upside the head.
"I want the blood sucker who killed my dad to pay." Krissy stated.
"We'll find out who that is, Krissy." Sarah reassured.
"But let's not be so bloodthirsty that just anyone will do." Dean added.
"But Victor says it's her." Josephine nagged.
"And I say it ain't! So we're gonna pack her to go, and we're gonna ask Victor ourselves. Okay?" Dean asked.
They made their way back to Victor's house with the fresh vamp in tow but as soon as they walked inside found that Victor wasn't exactly who he said he was. He was talking with a vampire and had Sam tied to a chair.
"What is going on here?" Josephine asked.
"These two are not to be trusted. They're trying to destroy us." Victory hurriedly lied, aiming his gun at Dean.
"Do you know this vamp, Victor?" Aidan accused.
"Of course he does! They're working together!" Sam yelled.
"Is that true?" Aidan questioned.
"It's complicated." Victor mumbled.
"No, actually, it's not. See, blue van here's been turning fresh vamps and setting them up for you kids as easy kills." Dean explained.
"But why?" Josephine asked.
"Because they didn't kill our families, did they?" Krissy replied.
"No." Victor stated.
"Well, then who did?" Josephine asked.
"I did. And they all screamed...and begged for mercy, especially the little ones." The vampire stated mercilessly.
"Enough, Seth!" Victor yelled, still holding his gun on Dean. "You have to understand. I saw a way to make the future better. But to get there, I had to do something hard."
"He killed them off your orders?" Krissy pried.
"You needed motivation. I scouted each and every one of you. And knew it was the only way to get you to hunt." Victor insisted.
"So you killed our families?" Aidan growled.
"I know, the deaths are tragic. But think of all the future lives that will now be saved because you are now together." Victor reasoned.
"So, these fake vampires were just a way for you to train us and fill our heads with lies?!" Krissy questioned.
"Don't you see? This is bigger than all of us. We have to learn to put things in perspective. Come with me. We can get past this." Victor pressed, before tossing his gun on the couch. Krissy stepped closer to Josephine and Aidan, shaking her head 'no'. "That is unfortunate."
Victor gave a sideways look to Seth before Seth grabbed Aidan, holding the teenage boy as a shield. Dean and Sarah grabbed their guns and aimed them at Seth.
"Aidan!" Krissy yelled.
"We're leaving." Victor stated. Krissy stepped in front of him, blocking his path.
"That's not happening." Krissy hissed.
"I taught you everything you know. Don't make me hurt you." Victor warned.
"Not everything, Victor." Krissy chided, before sending Josephine a signal. Josephine quickly pulled out a knife and tried to stab Victor with it but he blocked her and threw her at the couch. Sarah rushed forward to make sure Josephine was ok and put herself between the teenager and Victor.
Krissy took the opportunity to pull out her tranq gun and shot a dart into Seth's eye and another into his chest. Seth fell to the ground. Krissy pulled out her pistol and aimed at Victor as he turned to face her.
"Krissy, don't." Dean warned her.
"If we want revenge for our families' deaths, he gives it to us!" Krissy cried out.
"We don't kill people. You don't kill people." Dean pressed, moving closer to her.
"He's not a person. He's a monster." Krissy reasoned, taking another step toward Victor, who fell to his knees, shaking.
"Krissy, this ends bad, no matter what we do." Sam added.
"Exactly." Krissy muttered. Her gun now pointing directly at Victors head. She cocked the gun.
"Krissy, don't." Dean warned, lowering his gun and moving toward her again.
"This is for my dad." Krissy declared before pulling the trigger but it only dry fires. Victor jumped back at the sound and gasped frantically. Krissy pulled the trigger again and again it only dry fires. "For Josephine's family." Krissy pulled the trigger again. "For Aidan." Then she pulled the trigger one last time. "For me."
At each dry trigger, Victor became more and more distraught. When Krissy was done, she dropped the bullets that weren't loaded in the gun and dropped them near Victor's head.
"So, we're just gonna let him live?" Aidan exclaimed.
"Yeah. All alone, with himself. No family. No friends. Ask me, that's not much of anything." Krissy replied. She then turned to look at Dean, "Let's save that girl."
Dean nodded then pulled his knife out of its holster and turned to cut the ropes that held Sam to the chair. Before Dean could cut the ropes, Victor pulled a gun from his sock holster.
"Gun!" Josephine yelled.
Before anyone could get to him, Victor put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger killing himself instantly. Sarah stared in shock at Victor's lifeless body until she heard the scared gasp from the girl beside her. Shaking herself from her trance, Sarah looked over at the shocked teenagers then to Sam and Dean. Both equally as shocked.
"Dean, take Krissy, get the girl from the trunk and the supplies we need for the vamp cure. Aidan, get some tarps and tape for the bodies. Josephine, get a bowl from the kitchen and start collecting blood from the vamp." Sarah rattled off, moving to start untying Sam. Everyone silently left the room to do as she asked.
Aidan returned quickly with two large tarps and tape and laid them on the floor next to Victor's body.
"Thanks Aidan. Sam and I will take care of him, go round up every cleaning product you all have in the house." Sarah instructed. Once the boy had walked away, Sarah started to smooth out the tarp. "Okay, Sam. Let's get him out of here."
He nodded and knelt down to help her roll the body onto the tarp. They then wrapped and taped it up so they could dispose of him later. "Ok, let's get him out to the garage for now." Sarah said to Sam. They took him out to the garage then went back in and took care of the vamp after chopping his head off. Once done, Sarah looked through all of the cleaning products and split up cleaning detail between herself, Sam and Aidan. By the next morning the vamp cure was ready and the house was clean of blood.
Krissy walked over to Sam, Dean and Sarah who had congregated by the front door.
"Proud of you." Dean replied with an almost fatherly glint in his eye.
"Shut up, before I punch you." Krissy blushed.
"So, how's she doing?" Sam asked.
"Better now." Krissy answered.
"Oh, um..." Sam started to say as he pulled out a necklace and handed it to her. "I think this is yours."
"Thank you."
"We'll wait outside." Sam stated directing Sarah to the door.
"Okay. Whenever you're ready, we'll be in the car." Dean said to Krissy.
"What are you talking about?" Krissy asked.
"Your aunt? Cincinnati? Normal life? We'll be there by lunch tomorrow." Dean replied.
"Look, I hate how we were put together, but...I can't deny that it feels right. And why should I let Victor ruin that, too?" Krissy asked.
"So, what you're saying is that you like that boy over there and you want to stay?" Dean asked with a small smirk. Sarah stood just outside the door and smiled herself, seeing Dean's big brother personality come out.
"What? Aiden? No. I mean... He's like my brother. It's nothing like that." Krissy insisted.
"Well, you're all still minors."
"Not for long. Josephine will be 18 in a few months. And we all have a life and each other here." Krissy replied.
"And hunting?" Dean pressed.
"We won't go looking for it. But if any monsters show up around here, they better look out."
"Okay. Good."
"Really? I thought I was gonna have to fight you way more on that." Krissy said surprised.
"Well, you're right. You're not a kid anymore. You can make your own decisions." Dean said.
"You're all right for an old guy." Krissy teased.
"I'm really not that old." Dean said.
"You keep telling yourself that."
"Huh. All right. Well, I'm gonna have a, uh -a guy come and check on you every once in a while, okay? His name is Garth. He'll make sure that you're all right and you got what you need."
"Garth?" Krissy asked.
"Yeah. He's a little strange at first, but you'll come to love him." Dean added before holding up his fist for a fist bump, but Krissy grabbed his fist and got on her tip toes to kiss him on the cheek.
"Take care, Dean." Krissy crooned before walking back to Josephine and the girl they were trying to cure.
"Yeah. Goodbye, Dean." Aiden said from down the hallway/
Dean called him over, "Aiden. Listen, there's, uh, something I want to tell you about Krissy."
"I know. I know. You'll kill me if I ever hurt her. Blah. Blah. Blah."
"No, no. No. She'll kill you." Dean replied flatly before patting Aiden on the back and walking out the door. "Good luck."
