Chapter 26: The Bonus

The campers all stared as Martin finished the story he had told during Owen's big party, which was being held at Playa de Losers. "So let me get this straight," Gwen said, "You're a dragonborn with some extra pyrokinetic superpowers, who happens to have been endlessly reincarnated throughout history via the soul of an ancient precursor worshipped in ancient Persia as a god of darkness?" "Ahriman, yes," Martin said. Lindsay then spoke up. "And Heather has also been endlessly reincarnated via the soul of said precursor's wife?" "What about that last part didn't make sense?," Heather said, having accepted Martin's story without question, "At least this explains all the dreams I've been having since me and Martin first met."

"I'm a little surprised actually," Owen said, "I didn't think they're be so many meta-humans in one spot, let alone partaking in the same contest." "Yeah," Martin said, "I knew from Ahriman's memories the calculations he made. That's why me, Frank, Megan, and Sarah all signed up for this. You see, besides the four of us, each of you was born with their soul infused with a dragon's essence. Which makes it odd that Heather would included this time around. The 'Dragon's Mate' as her past lives have come to be known, have never actively participated in the Dragon Squad." "Well I am now, it seems," Heather said, "And you'd better not get all overprotective."

"So what about the rest of you guys," Owen said, "I'm curious. See, I happen to a powerful terrakinetic. It's been in my family for years." "I can generate dark matter," Gwen said, demonstrating by manifesting said substance in her hand, "It can do all kinds of things, like slow down time around me. Hence how I was able to evade the psycho killer, who I happen to have put away before." "That explains what he was doing on the island," Heather said, "As for me, I can generate certain types of minerals, which can give me certain powers." She demonstrated by coating her arms in emerald. "I have ruby, emerald, cobalt, topaz, sapphire, amethyst, and amber."

"Isn't amber tree sap?," Lindsay asked. "It's turned into mineral via fossilization," Duncan said, "Anyway, my power is a bit lower on the scale. My eyes have various types of vision. Telescopic, x-ray, night-vision, thermal, you name it." "Why didn't you use it during the second camp-out?," Heather said. "That would have been cheating," Duncan said, "Come on, I think we all decided not to use our powers on national television, am I right?" They all nodded. Leshawna was the next to speak up. "I can alter my density, making myself either heavier of lighter depending on the situation."

Geoff suddenly disappeared, only to reappear near the buffet. "I can teleport. Quite a distance too. So long as I can visualize where I'm going, I can warp just about anywhere, regardless of the distance. I once used this power to take a trip to the Great Wall." Izzy adjusted her skirt to reveal her feline tail. "I'm half beastkin. I can't shift into a full beast form, but I do have the special traits of a jungle cat, such as superior speed and agility and super senses. The tail's the only thing I've never been able to hide though." "It looks cute," Owen said, making Izzy blush. "I can generate vibrations strong enough to make earthquakes," DJ said, "Even in the air or water."

"Speaking of water," Lindsay said, "I'm a hydrokinetic. My water control is so precise, I can even remove impurities." Bridgette sighed. "First off, I should mention I wasn't even born on this planet. Me and my aunt came here from a distant galaxy. This is what I really look like though, I'm not hiding anything weird behind a hologram." "Why'd you come here in the first place?," Duncan said, not as surprised as the others. "My planet was on the verge of destruction," Bridgette explained, "According to my aunt, my parents found some sort of spatial anomaly that threatened to rip apart our world. So the planetary senator ordered an evacuation, with my parents staying behind to monitor it. They were still on the planet when it was destroyed."

She shed a single tear, and Geoff walked over to comfort her. After she calmed down. "Anyway, after a few years on this planet, the unique environment gave me a few key powers. Limited invulnerability, super strength, the power to fly, super speed, ice breath, and x-ray and laser vision." "So," Noah said, "A 'flying brick' as the trope states." Bridgette nodded. "As for me," Trent said, "I can generate electricity, manifesting it in a number of ways. It's powered by my nervous system, so the harder I think, the stronger it becomes." "Neat," Sarah said, "For my power, I can access a full one-hundred percent of my higher brain functions." Everyone except Frank, Megan, and Martin gasped. "You're a class five?!," Gwen said in astonishment, "I didn't think any existed!"

"Sarah's the only one recorded so far," Megan explained, "As for my power, I can astral project. My projection has limited interaction with the physical world, but it can possess people, and if they're nervous enough control them. It can also poltergeist non-living objects and grants me psychometry. To protect my physical form, a special psychic barrier is erected until my body and soul are reunited." Leshawna turned to Harold. "What about you honey?" "My power?," Harold said, "I can coat non-living objects with a reactive substance that has the explosive potential of nitro glycerin. I'm also blast-proof, meaning I can't be harmed by own explosions. I usually keep a few indestructible tools on hand to make full use of my power."

"That's a bit destructive," Courtney quipped, "My power is a bit more refined. I can think up complex mathematic equations and convert them into physical energy. One of the more obscure powers, but one I'm really proud of." "What about the not-related twins?," Duncan said. Katie spoke up first. "I can generate meta-essence, the source of all meta-human power, in its purest form, resulting in a number of potent energy attacks." "My power is more mental," Sadie said, "If I can see another person's eyes, I can give them a verbal command and they will carry it out. It doesn't have to be direct eye contact. I can use mirrors, or live TV broadcasts, but not recordings. That reminds me, I should turn off Chef's command."

Her eyes glowed white, and the red glow in Chef's eyes disappeared. He shook his head, then shrugged. "The command can last for as long as the person does," Sadie said, "And while they still act normal beyond following said command, they don't remember any actions regarding the command afterwards. Though they do keep any other memories." Beth spoke up next. "I can manipulate light. It's usually in the form of light rays, but I can alter the natural flow of light in a number of ways. What about you, Cody?" "Me," Cody said, "I'm just a fast healer. Oh, but I do have a buddy that I use for crime fighting." A section of his back rippled to reveal a black circle, out of which extended a wire with a blinking light at the end.

"This is Nano," Cody explained, "It's a sentient nanotech suit from the depths of space. Little guy just crashed outside my home one night. Through him I can take full advantage of my healing factor and have a lot more options when crime fighting." Frank was next. "I'm a cryokinetic," Frank said, "I should also mention that me, Martin, Sarah, and Megan have been a team for a while, but still needed to expand before Martin's work with the Order can really get started." "The Order of the Dragon," Tyler said, "Never thought someone like me would be accepted. Anyway, my power is precise muscle control. I'm actually a lot better at sports than I've shown, but my skill is way too strong for competition, so I hold back and let everyone think I suck."

Justin spoke up next. "I can control sound waves, to the point where it improves my hearing. I don't even need to use my own voice, I can just take sound waves from out of the air. Noise is all around us after all." "Impressive," Noah said, "My power is that I can tap into the powers of elemental djinn. I can even summon them in massive and powerful forms, for a variety of attacks." Eva quipped, "My power is that I'm strong enough to lift objects up to fifty-thousand kilograms." "That just leaves me," Ezekiel said, "My power is that I can manipulate electromagnetic energies. If it's made of metal, I can control it, to a very precise degree."

"So," Owen said, "Does Chris know about all this?" "From the beginning," Chris said, "Hence the fact that a promise to not use those powers during the course of the show was included on the contract. Anyway, I'd like to once again congratulate Owen on successfully winning the grand prize. However, I'd like to give everyone a chance to earn some more money, even Owen." The campers became surprised. "Don't get it twisted," Chris said, "This isn't a case of trading in the prize. That hundred-thousand is Owen's whether he wins this bonus or not." He tossed Martin a tracking device. "This is actually for you as a group. See, due to an increase of budget the producers gave me for hosting that awards show, I can afford to offer the whole lot of you a million dollar prize if you can find it before sundown."

"A million dollars?!," Owen asked, "For all of us!?" "Martin explained the reason he and his friends were hoping to win the prize," Chris said, "He needed money to fund a trip to Boston to clean out the previous Archive and move it elsewhere. He also thought the 'destined' members of his iteration of Dragon Squad would be here on the island. I was surprised when I heard he was right." "What do you say guys?," Martin said, "The choice to join is yours." Most of the campers agreed, but Duncan was hesitant. "One condition," Duncan said, "I happen to already lead a team of paramilitary superheroes. I know that they can't be part of Dragon Squad, but I'd at least appreciate them being made part of the Order."

Martin nodded. "Deal." He shook hands with each camper one by one, safe for Frank, Megan, and Sarah, who were already Order members. As they shook hands, a dragon tattoo appeared on Martin's right arm, and moved to the right arm of the person he shook hands with. "This is a symbol of trust," Martin said, "Which is something I don't give out lightly, but is hard to break. Now let's find that cash, we need to get to Boston ASAP!" The campers all cheered and got on the boat back to the island. With the tracker, it wasn't long before they found the briefcase full of cash inside a bear cave in the middle of the central mountain. Outside the cave, they met Chris again. "You made that too easy," Heather quipped.

"That was on purpose," Chris said, "After all, we're all brethren here." He raised his hand to reveal a tattoo of his own. "Martin saved me from an angry media rival who wanted revenge for me ruining his career," Chris explained, "Since then I realized I had to change my approach to media. Once Martin knew I was ready to make a change, he made me a member of the Order. It's not really unheard of. Previous Order members have included those in media, from town criers in olden times to modern day newspapers and television." Martin turned to his new team and held out his hand. " Let's head to Boston... Team. Dragonblaze!"

Heather: "Crystalline!"
Justin: "Soundwave!"

Frank: "Deep Freeze!"

Sarah: "Cerebral!"

Beth: "Flashbang!"

Lindsay: "Hydro Girl!"

Eva: "Strongarm!"

Ezekiel: "Magnetrik!"

Harold: "Dynamite!"

Duncan: "Mercenary!"

Tyler: "Sportsman!"

Sadie: "Cyber White!"

Katie: Cyber Black!"

Noah: "Fantasmic!"

Trent: "Bio-Surge!"

Gwen: "Mystica!"

Izzy: "Wildfang!"

Geoff: "Slipstream!"

Owen: "Seismic!"

Bridgette: "Mega Girl!"

Courtney: "Calculus!"

In unison, they all threw their hands up and shouted, "Dragon Squad!"

To be continued...

The idea to make Chris a member of the Order of the Dragon was last minute, as a means of explaining his different personality. I hope you don't find the hero names I picked too cheesy. Anyway, further adventures will follow. I'll say this much, Dragon Squad has six more members it needs before it can be considered complete, and the next "Order of the Dragon" story will go into how those members join. Also, I will go into a bit of Duncan's own hero team in future stories. But, for all intents and purposes, this story is finished. Read and review.
