She hated this, absolutely hated it.

Out of all the things she could be doing, out of all the places she could be she was here. Here was the branch of a very tall tree in the thick forests that surrounded Silas. As for what she was doing well she was thinking or that's what she told herself really she knew she was hiding but Carmilla Karnstein did not hide, she was just thinking.

The whole thing with Mother and Evelyn's words of encouragement were in a constant battle in her mind. Evelyn was right she was too Carmilla to just back down but her instincts warned her that Mother was lingering in the darkness waiting for a chance at her mate.

Mate.

That was another thing ever since she'd bit Laura for the strength to go after Will her instincts had grown more and more towards protecting the little danger magnet. Yes Laura was already her girlfriend and they were almost the perfect couple or as perfect as the damaged, broody vampire and her naïve, courageous, insane human girlfriend could be but now there was more. She had wanted to talk to Laura about the whole mate thing but how do you bring that up? 'Oh hey Laura I really love you and can't live without you so I want to bite you to ward off any other supernatural and possibly change you into a creature of the undead, by the way do you want Chinese or pizza tonight?' yeah that would go over real well.

Running a hand through her bangs she looked up at the moon it was almost full which meant the ritual would take place soon. Their time was up and here she was hiding in a tree. Sighing she fell back against the rough bark uncaring and depressed. This was so stupid she was supposed to be helping the others prepare for Deans day and yet here she was in a fucking tree.

She needed to get her head on straight and do something.

Standing on the limb she jumped down easily dodging branches landing with a soft "thud" her feline like grace coming into play. That was another thing neither she nor Evelyn had told their girls about their shapeshifting abilities. It was one thing to tell your girlfriend you were a vampire but the fact that she could turn into a giant panther? That was pushing it but Laura would probably understand after she got over the shock and they're abilities would come in handy later on in their fight against Mother because there was no way that old battle axe would go down without a fight.

Walking through the forest she breathed in the cool night air she could almost taste the snowflakes. Winter would come and the snow would start piling up forcing the humans to bundle up like little penguins. Wait where did that come from? She never compared humans to flightless puffy bird's till- Laura. Damn it she couldn't even think about the weather without the tiny journalist invading her thoughts.

Rolling her eyes at the sappiness of it all she kept walking she wasn't too far from campus but she steered clear of the amazon's hunting grounds, she didn't want to risk a little run-in with Danny not after what Evelyn said. Her baby sister had grown up so much and to see her happy, truly happy even with her former rival was something Carmilla never thought she would see. Evelyn had been afraid of her own shadow and terrified of Danny and yet they slowly started changing, growing in different ways to match the other. Danny was already protective Laura was a pretty good example but she was patient and almost as stubborn as Carmilla herself so even with her own wariness of the supernatural she was willing to befriend and eventual be marked by Evelyn speaking tomes about their relationship.

Yes her baby sister was happy, stronger, and gaining a confidence that she found herself lacking. Evelyn wasn't one to assume things she didn't really know they would win against mother but even with the possibility of death she was willing to put it all on the line for their freedom.

Freedom.

That's what it all came down to. Their freedom to think and do as they pleased without Mother standing over their shoulder ridiculing and berating them at every turn. To be able live as they pleased would be a miracle but to love…gods she loved Laura and she wanted to keep that but Mother would never let her be, she would never let them be. The panther in her hissed in the back of her mind not liking where this was going. The beast hated their sire much like the wolf but this panther had never been tamed it was just as strong if not stronger than Carmilla and she came to rely on it when she wasn't so sure of herself like now.

It was an impossible battle of instinct verse logic and she was stuck till now.

She knew what she had to do but she needed to see Laura she needed to make sure that this was the right decision.

Heading up stairs she prepared herself for the possible reactions her mate might have reminding her that she still had to tell Laura about that. Pausing outside the door she winced yeah now might not be the best time maybe after all this is over and she doesn't have to worry about her Mother coming in and killing them all. Yeah that was a much better option. walking in she was surprised to find that Laura wasn't at her desk in fact judging by her mates scent she hadn't been there in hours.

Fearing the worst she took a deep breath catching her mates scent she followed it down the hall to Perry and Lafontaine's room. This would have been fine but she found Evelyn's scent mixed with Laura's and Perry's. Listening by the door she could hear their heart beats they were slow and steady their breathing was light almost rhythmic. The humans were asleep but she didn't know about Evelyn.

Taking a chance she took the handle and peeked inside. The room was dark but it didn't affect her vision she could see just as clearly in the dark the only source of light was from the laptop that rested upon a mountain of pillows. The screen was filled with movie options so she didn't need to guess that they were on Netflix. Looking near the top of the bed she found them huddled together. Laura was on the side closest to the edge but there was no fear of falling she had her arms wrapped around Perry's middle anchoring her to the bed, Perry was in the middle her head tilted to the side resting on top of Evelyn's as the blonde curled up on her other side.

The three must have met up to talk and Carmilla couldn't help the dread that followed that thought. She had a pretty good idea of what they had talked about but that didn't make her feel any better. Staring at the trio she couldn't help feeling like an even bigger idiot than she already was. This was what she should be fighting for, they were it, her girlfriend, her sister and her friend. All of them were what she should be fighting for yet she was second guessing herself?

The panther snorted at her stupidity glad that its human side had finally realized its mistakes. Nodding herself she left the room making sure not to wake them as she closed the door behind her. Holding the door knob she stood there finally coming to a decision.

"Carmilla?"

Lafontaine was on her left thick tomes under one arm a bag of chines food in the other. The scientist had been working long hours in the mad science lab as well as at the library to find ways to delay or stop the ritual but now it wouldn't matter.

"Hey Lafontaine"

Glancing from the vampire to her dorm the ginger grew worried.

"Are they ok? Perry's been stressed out of her mind did she snap at Laura or Evelyn again you know she doesn't mean to its just-"

"Nerves, I know and no she hasn't snapped they all fell asleep binge watching something on Netflix" Carmilla smiled at the relief on the ginger's face.

"Good…good" Lafontaine nodded looking the brunette over.

"So uh are you ok? You've been extra broody lately"

"Yeah I have been broody and all but… I figured things out"

"That's good right?"

"Sort of"

"Why only sort of?"

"Because I have to get that stupid sword and that means leaving you guys"

"Wait your leaving! When its so close to Deans-Day!"

"Yeah we need that thing if we're going to beat my mother and if I leave now then I'll get back in time to help stop the ritual"

"But what about Laura? Perry? All of us?" Lafontaine wasn't about to let her go running off when they needed everyone on the defense.

"I'm doing this for Laura just tell her I'll be back as soon as I can" Carmilla stood tall, her shoulders back, and her head held high. She was a woman on a mission and nothing would stop her now. Heading for the stairs she brushed past Lafontaine and jumped over the railing. The ginger gaped looking from the door to the determined Vampire.

"Wait are you going to say goodbye to Laura?"

"If I do then I won't have the strength to leave just tell her I'm getting the damn thing and let Evelyn take the helm everything should fall into place!" Carmilla's voice echoed from the stair well. By the time Lafontaine got to the railing she could see the brunette was already gone. Leaning against the railing Lafontaine took a deep breath slowly nodding to themselves.

"Everything's fine, we have back up plans, we have a vampire still on site… oh this is going to end badly" Dropping the Chinese food and books they ran a hand through their short hair. Panic wasn't a normal emotion for them they always had science or a hypothesis to prove things but this was up in the air. The entire equation had been thrown out of whack. No it wasn't as bad as they thought they still had Evelyn and Carmilla was getting the sword like all of them had asked but the Dean was due to arrive tomorrow and Carmilla wouldn't be there to greet her as the "remorseful/black mailed" daughter the demon woman expected leaving Evelyn to take the heat for the entire thing.

"No, no ,no Its still ok.." Lafontaine tried to convince themselves searching for possible pros.

They still had Evelyn and J.P, the Vampire had been checking up on them via phone calls and Text messages. J.P had been watching out for them on what few surveillance cameras they had on campus and what little information they could find on the cults and rituals similar to the one the ancient book of Samarian described.

"we're fine"

Taking a deep calming breath they picked up their books and food relived that it hadn't spilled. Quietly entering their shared dorm they couldn't help the smile that spread across their lips at the sight of the girls. They were adorable and it was a relief to see them not pacing, panicking, or scared out of their minds. It had been a taxing week for all of them but tomorrow would be Dean's Day and they would officially be out of time.

Setting down their things on the desk Lafontaine reached behind it fishing around in the small space till they found it. Getting a better hold they pulled out one of the ZETA'S tridents she had asked Kirsch for one and the Bro happily agreed wanting to spread the "Awesomeness of ZETA" as he put it. The design was simple, a metal pole with a thick rubber grip in the middle, and iron prongs of the forked trident but with a little tweaking here and there it was a giant Taser with a stake at the bottom for easy kills.

The whole thing was an easy multi use weapon and was perfect for keeping an opponent at a distance. The whole idea was to keep the Dean and her goons distracted while they screwed up the ritual and Carmilla killed the thing or vise-versa. The point is they had a plan and they were following through that's all that mattered.

Twirling the weapon between their fingers Lafontaine watched the girls for a moment. They were all so tired of waiting the stress and anticipation was wearing them out but it would end soon enough and the Dean would come down on them. They all knew it was going to happen but they didn't know if it would happen right away or slowly. The Dean would come after them either way and when she did they would be ready.

Twirling the trident once more Lafontaine put it back behind the desk they would help the ZETA'S modify the others tomorrow and wait for Carmilla to return hoping that she got the sword in time.
