AN: Hello, everyone! I hope you're not too displeased with me.I think this is one of my most disappointing chapters. I'd been so wrapped up I school and my mind was all over the place. I severely apologize but I was able to finish with the help of one of my reviewers ( And didn't know until I looked, haha). Thank you so much, Rixie Rhapsodos and a shout out to my friend since Highschool, Jean! I now present to you Chapter 26 of Sesshomaru No Saisho no Ai.
Chapter 26: Pre-emptive Strike
Last Time:
Hushed murmurs filled the room as everyone wondered what it could be. The Vassal delivered the scroll to Kuro. His eyes widened at the seal and ribbon that adorned the scroll which meant that it was urgently important. He unraveled it as everyone in the room waited with bated breaths.
"Its a letter of courtship!" he said in surprise.
Tsukiko was in shock. What did this all mean? More importantly, who had he decided on courting? She could feel her heart race in anticipation. Kuro read on further and soon closed the letter.
"Well?" said Seiji who decided to break the eerie silence.
Kuro nodded. "It would seem that Sesshomaru has decided to court the young human woman who is in his company."
Court Session
The court was in an uproar over the letter. It would seem that Sesshomaru was always one step ahead of them. Tsukiko was in a stupor, unable to process what had just happened. She didn't know whether to be happy that her son was not losing his title or angry because he'd followed in his father's tragic footsteps? She was brought back to the present when she heard the boom of Seiji's voice.
"It has been decided." he said, "We shall begin making the necessary preparations immediately."
Setsuna stood up, slamming her hands on the desk as she stared in burning anger. Her actions earned her the eyes of the court and a very disapproving look from the former lady of the West.
"That's outrageous!" she screamed, "How can you all be so calm about this? He's courting a human whore!"
Hironori was about to interject when Yura stood in his place. "Don't speak like you know anything." she said calmly, " You know absolutely nothing and it's none of your business."
Setsuna's eyes burned with anger. She didn't understand why no one else saw nothing wrong with Sesshomaru's decision. He must've gone mad, choosing to court such a creature rather than a woman of the best qualifications to be lady of the West!
Kuro stroked his beard in thought. "Hold on a minute Seiji."
Everyone turned to the lord of the South. What had he been thinking about during this session?
"There is one thing though." he began, "Since she is being courted by someone of high nobility and rank, she will have to prove herself before we can approve their courtship."
The other lords and ladies had almost forgotten about the different trials which were administered in order to be approved for courtship. All who wished to court a High ranking Noble or Lord had to endure these tests along with other tests as well. These tests were given to weed out those who only sought after power and wealth.
"At least someone has some sense." Setsuna said with a roll of her eyes.
Kuro turned to her. "Since you're over there pouting, why don't you be the one to give the news to Sesshomaru?" he suggested, "I'm sure he'd be delighted to see you."
Snickers rang about the room and Setsuna gritted her teeth. Everyone knew that the princess had feelings for the cold-hearted lord and how much he couldn't stand her. It was more than fitting that she deliver the news rather than an official court courier.
"Well?"came the voice of Tsukiko.
Setsuna stood to her feet and inclined her head to the court. "It would be my pleasure, Lord Kuro and Lady Tsukiko."
'Damn you all!' she mused, 'I will have Sesshomaru for myself!'
Western Castle Outskirts [Yura]
Another blizzard had engulfed the countryside in its wintry blanket. The first phase of mating season was only half a day away and it would soon capture all demons within its fiery haze. During this time, females would take cover in order to avoid unwanted ruts and pregnancies.
Yura had luckily made it to the Western Lands within good timing and was on her way to the Castle. The cold didn't bother her as her anger was enough to keep her warm. Besides, she didn't have far to go anyway. She kept on track and soon enough, the gates came into view. To her surprise, someone was standing before the gates, wearing a similar cloak that she herself wore.
'Who is that?' she mused.
The blizzard wind picked up, causing her to shield her eyes. Once it passed, she looked up again but saw no one Had her eyes been playing tricks on her? Even the air had cleared of the scent she thought she'd smelled. Just what was going on here?
Northern Mountains
Aki stood at the mouth of the cave, watching the darkness of the dawn. The cool darkness was soothing as the wintry wind blew against her. Koga had left on a hunting expedition to gather more food before the snow picked up again. That left her and Ayame to themselves along with a few other stood on the other side of the entrance, relishing in the breeze. It was delightful after recovering from a morning sickness episode.
"Morning sickness its such a burden." Ayame whined.
Aki giggled. "I'll admit it wasn't my favorite time of the day either." she said softly, "A cup of Ginger tea before bed works wonders."
Ayame smiled and was about to thank her for the advice when she saw Aki's eyes brimming with tears. She quickly wiped them away and gave Ayame a smile before going back inside and sitting around the fire.
"I'm so sorry." Ayame said softly, "I didn't mean to bring up any bad memories."
The demoness waved her off and gave her a smile. "Oh no such thing!" she said, "It made me think about the day I gave birth."
Ayame's emerald eyes softened as she looked down to her very pregnant belly. She would soon meet her first child and heir to the Northern Mountains. Just the thought made her feel warm and fuzzy.
"I would love to hear the story if you're willing to tell it."
Aki was a bit reluctant. "I don't know if that's a..."
Ayame was awe struck as Aki began to tremble in fear, rubbing her arms as her fur began to stand on end. She acted like she'd seen a ghost. Had there been bad memories associated with that event? She would imagine so but it was quite sudden and alarming to see her acting this way
"Are you okay? What's wrong?"
Her violet orbs widened. "He's coming."
Sesshomaru & Inuyasha
The two Inuyoukai brothers had taken to the dojo for some early morning excercise. Inuyasha had to admit he liked this better than just sitting around in his brother's stuffy office. The clash of the metal ringing in his ears was enough to get his blood pumping. Even a small crowd of drooling servants had gathered to watched the shirtless men.
"Seems like we have an audience." Inuyasha said with a smirk.
Sesshomaru paid them no heed and continued to spar with his brother while also thinking of what they spoke of this morning.
Flashback
"I thought about it Sesshomaru and your idea just might work." he said, "If done correctly."
Sesshomaru looked up from his scrolls to see his brother standing in the door way, leaning against the door frame. Sesshomaru was silent as he waited for his brother to continue his explanation.
"You may be courting Kimara but she'll have to prove herself eventually to the court but now is the perfect opportunity to do that." explained Inuyasha, "…Without you."
Inuyasha noted the surprise in his brother's eyes. It took him by surprise because he had never thought to consider had never really done anything without his assistance. It wasn't that he thought that she wasn't capable but more so because he felt she shouldn't have to worry about such trivial things. She was such a carefree girl who never really asked for much. Then there was Kimara whom he was courting. Unlike rin, she was more than capable of protecting herself but the thought of someone possibly taking her against her will made his blood boil.
"I will not allow it." he said, "It is my responsibility to assure their safety."
Inuyasha shook his head. "You won't be of much use to anyone while under the effects of heat during mating season unless you want to kill Rin and impregnate Kimara."
Sesshomaru opened his mouth to speak but the words caught in his throat. He was absolutely right and those two would have to fend for themselves until mating season was over.
End Flashback
Sesshomaru's mind was in a daze as this decision honestly kind of tormented him. He didn't want to lose what he had already begun to obtain. With Mating season approaching so quickly, he needed to speak with Kimara.
Western Castle [Sesshomaru's Study]
Kasumi and Yuri had decided to speak with Miki, the young child who had come forward with information regarding Rin's attack. The girl must've been absolutely terrified for any retaliation the culprit would have against her. Miki rocked on her feet, chewing her lip in nervousness. Yuri stood against the wall and Kasumi sat at the desk.
"I was assigned to prepare breakfast for lady Rin that morning but I was running a little late." Miki began to explain.
Flashback
'Oh no!' thought Miki as she hurried down the hall.
If the head of kitchen staff found out she was late, there were sure to be consequences and hopefully someone was nice enough to cover for her. It was around this time that the old bat would be making her rounds. As she turned the corner that connected the North and Western wings, her ears picked up something odd. Her brisk pace came to a slow creep as the scent of blood hit her nose. Was someone hurt?
If she could remember correctly, there was an unoccupied storage area just up ahead. Slowly and as quietly as she could, she moved closer to the door and luckily it was cracked just a bit. Miki peered inside, gasping at the scene before her. Rin was injured and was being held against the wall by Toru, joined by her little friends.
'I must tell Kasumi!' she thought with urgency.
Flashback
"I know I should have said something but I….."
Kasumi nodded. "You were afraid they might aim for you next."
Miki nodded and Kasumi definitely understood. She had the evidence she needed and her mind began to devise a suitable punishment. Just as she was about to dismiss Miki, the study door opened.
"How dare you…" Kasumi began, turning her attention only to be left in shock.
Yuri's eyes widened as she stared at the person who stared back, arms folded and eyes full of fire.
"Its You."
Kimara & Rin
Rin watched as Kimara read the scroll she'd given her. It'd taken all her courage to give it to her but Kasumi's instructions were made clear. She noticed that as she delved deeper into the letter, Kimara trembled slightly. The things that the scroll had revealed to her were most troubling as well as worrying. Honestly, it truly frightened her.
'She's trembling.' thought Rin, 'I wonder what it says.'
"Who else knows about this?"
Rin shrugged her shoulders. "I'm not sure but I don't even think Lord Sesshomaru is aware."
'She wanted me to know before Sesshomaru?'
Kimara tried to remain calm as her mind began to race. She never thought things would get this bad and all over Sesshomaru's lack of a mate. His subjects thought that he was weak and considered her a whore who only wanted to bed him for his wealth. She hated being thought of as such and hated that she was a cause of the hatred Sesshomaru was receiving. He didn't deserve any of it and he would surely lay waste to them if he found out.
'Its because of me…'
"Kimara?"
The young woman was in a bit of shock as she continued to stare at the parchment in her hand. Rin put a hand on her arm, bringing her out of her trance as she turned to face the young child. She gave a nod and mustered a smile to reassure the girl although her mind was in turmoil. Her hand absently travelled to the courting mark, the skin still taut and tender.
'I cause so much trouble for him and he's done so much for me.'
Setsuna
The Orochi Princess neared Sesshomaru's Northern Villa. She'd chosen to travel alone because though she was on order from the court, she had another agenda here. Mating season would begin and the closer to Sesshomaru she was the better. This would not just a few nights of endless rutting in order to quench one's sexual thirst but to some, it was also an opportunity to find a mate. She might've been a little selfish but she did wish for a companion in life just like any other female. This would be a crucial time and she didn't need that human twit getting in the way. She then remembered Lady Tsukiko's words to her after court.
Flashback
Court had been adjourned until the new year and all were returning to their homes. Setsuna was just about to leave when Lady Tsukiko approached her. She quickly bowed in respect. She had to admit that she was a powerful woman and she made her nervous.
"Does something trouble you, my lady?" Not that she cared in the least. She didn't want to be deterred any longer.
Tsukiko moved to stand before her, reaching out toward her as she slipped a finger under chin and pulled her close. Setsuna whimpered as Tsukiko's claw was pressed against her throat in a painful manner.
"You would do well to listen to me girl." she said elegantly yet threateningly. "If you do anything to jeopardize Sesshomaru's Courtship, I will kill you myself. The West has no need of the tainted heirs you would produce. Though human, I believe that girl would produce a much more eligible heir than you."
Setsuna couldn't believe what she was saying to her. How dare she! Had she been Bewitched by that human whore just as Sesshomaru had? Had she gone mad?
"U-understood, my lady." she growled.
Tsukiko pulled her hand away as if touching her burned her. She glared at her for a few moments before leaving.
End Flashback
A human producing suitable heirs rather than she? It was tasteless even for , she must've known something that she didn't but that was beside the point. Setsuna had been so caught up in her musings that she hadn't realized that she'd reached her destination.
Courtyard
"Sesshomaru-Sama!"
Inuyasha didn't have to turn around to know who's annoying voice that was. He turned to his brother who was not pleased at all to hear that voice. What in the seven hells was she doing here anyway? The young woman in question approached, showing respect for the Inu brothers as well as the younger one's mate and friend. Kagome and Sango had noticed the displeased look on Sesshomaru's face.
"Looks like its a good thing we're leaving today." whispered Sango.
The miko nodded It would seem that whenever this woman was around, trouble was sure to follow. And to be honest, she'd had enough of the youkai court and its participants. Inuyasha joined them and they were on their way shortly after. Setsuna saw this as her chance to speak with Sesshomaru. Their eyes met and she felt an instant chill as his golden orbs were hard and cold.
"To what do I owe this visit?" he queried. He knew she was here on Court order as she had once stated the terms of her return. But what could she possibly have to say to him now?
Setsuna nodded, reaching into the sleeve of her kimono. "As I've said before, I'm here to speak with you about the Court's Decision on Lord Kuro and Lady Tsukiko's orders."
"My mother." he said flatly. He wondered what she was scheming now. However, if this was backed by her and a cardinal lord, it would seem it was an important matter. "If that is what you are here for, then I will allow it."
The princess nodded, taking that as an indication for her to explain. "The Court has ruled that in order for them to approve your Courtship, that girl must undergo trials set by the court. For now, she must undergo the trial of strength to prove her worth and if she would have the ability to rule at your side."
As she listened to her, the young lord grew rather annoyed. His jaw clenched tight as realization hit him. To conduct such a test when mating season was less than half a day away…were they trying to get her killed? He knew that he would be incapacitated during this time so it didn't sit well with him that he would not be near nor able to protect her. It was as Inuyasha said and the two whom he held dear, would have to protect themselves until it subsided. He would have to explain this to her and he was not particularly pleased with these circumstances but it would have to do for now.
"This Sesshomaru understands and will relay the message to her."
Northern Mountains
Koga was returning to the mountains. He made sure that his hunting party procured enough to last them through these next few days. They would be rough and one could never be too careful. As they neared, a scream echoed throughout the area. Koga's mind instantly went to Ayame as he took off toward the source of the scream. What was going on? As he ascended the mountain, he noted that his clansmen were evacuating.
"What's going on?" he screamed. They only pushed past him, leaving him with no answer or explanation.
He neared the den and stopped at the scene before him. Some strange man had Ayame by the neck, her feet dangling over the Canyon. Who was he and what did he want? Whomever he was, he didn't notice that Koga was even there or he was simply ignoring him.
"Now tell me," he began as he squeezed tighter, "Where is she?"
Ayame gripped his wrist as she struggled to breathe. "I…. don't…. know."
The man then turned to Koga, his mate still in his grasp. His crimson eyes bore into his and Koga felt as though he was staring death in the face. He was so consumed with worry that he would drop her to her death that he didn't dare make any type of sudden move.
"Tell me where that woman is." Kasai ordered, voice devoid of any emotion. They would give him what he wanted or there would be dire consequences. And he did not have the patience to play around.
"Woman?" Koga inquired, "My mate? Who are you talking about and who are you?"
The man sighed in aggravation as his patience was wearing thin. "I am Kasai and I am in search of a woman that goes by the name of Aki." he said, "She has something that I want."
Koga was taken aback. How was this man associated with Aki? What could she possibly possess that he wanted so badly? In all his years of knowing her, she never seemed the type to hide things from those that cared for her.
" She left at dawn." Koga admitted. Ayame looked at him, thankful he sounded convincing. "She said she was headed South."
Kasai looked the into the Wolf Chief's eyes, his azure orbs sincere as they held no indication that he was lying. He threw his hostage to her mate before disappearing without a trace. Koga held her tightly and once she regained her composure, she looked up at him.
"Was that such a good idea?" she asked, "What if he discovers you lied?
Truthfully, he didn't care if he lied especially if it was to help a close comrade. His detour would give Aki the time she needed to get away. And hopefully, she would succeed and he would give up on finding her.
Western Castle
Kasumi and Yuri looked into the Fiery eyes of the former governess. "Yura!"
Before them, stood their friend and the future princess of the Eastern lands. Yuri didn't understand why she would've come but it seems that Kasumi went behind her back. She guessed it was better this way since she would've found out sooner or later.
"How could you not inform me?!"
Yuri flinched as her sister continued to scold her. She could go on and on but there was work to be done. When she was finished, she still had an angry fire within her eyes. Finished with her speech, she put her hands on her hips.
"I could fuss all day, but there's much to be done."
Yuri stood to her feet and followed her sister to the servant's quarters. Whispers buzzed in her ears as Yura's presence changed the atmosphere of the castle. That was such of the aura that she always gave. She wasn't scared or worried to put lower servants in place along with keeping the higher up ones in line. She had the no nonsense attitude when it came to duties and protecting those who the Lord commanded of them. She was going to fix this problem within the castle and she would be damned in she let it be overtaken.
Sesshomaru's Study
Kimara twiddled her thumbs nervously as she she was escorted to Sesshomaru's study. She wondered what he was summoning her for and why. It wasn't odd but she wondered whether it had something to do with Mating season or not. Now that they were courting, she did not know of her position during this time. From what Kagome and Sango spoke up, Mating season could get a little bloody. Once they reached the entrance to his study, the servants excused themselves. She raised her hand to knock and was almost immediately granted entry.
"You summoned me?" She surveyed the room and noticed that she and Sesshomaru were not alone. That Setsuna girl was also present. It didn't look like Sesshomaru was pleased either as he motioned for her to sit down. Kimara took a seat and patiently waited, a strange feeling beginning to swell within her.
Sesshomaru cleared his throat before speaking. "As I'm sure you are aware, Mating Season will soon commence." he explained, "Many see this as a time to find a mate but many also use this time to fulfill the sexually carnal desires that is inflicted upon them. In Youkai terminology , we would call this Rutting."
"So basically, these Demons engage in consensual and non-consensual intercourse in the open?" Kimara questioned. She had to admit that that was pretty disgusting in a sense.
Sesshomaru nodded. "While under the effects of Mating Season, Youkai will have no control of themselves since their inner youkai will be in full control. This poses a danger to humans if they were to come across a Youkai in this state. Unlike us, humans would not survive the brutal and continuous rutting."
"Brutal and Continuous?" queried Kimara, her heart beginning to race.
Setsuna saw fit to add into Sesshomaru's explanation. "Whether it be male or female, they will continue to Rut until their sexual need is quenched. If it means Rutting with countless partners, then so be it. That is what those who do not wish to take a mate do."
Kimara gasped in horror. What a horrible thing that was to transpire! It was sure to be a painful experience for anyone. Sesshomaru knew that telling her this would frighten her but she was a strong woman and she had to understand.
"Those that wish to Mate will simply seek out the best candidate and mate with them." Sesshomaru continued, "And those who do not wish to seek a mate, go into hiding until the conclusion of mating season."
Kimara nodded again as she absorbed this information. She understood everything but one thing: Why was Setsuna here? Sesshomaru could sense her anxiousness as well as something else.
"Why is she here?" The Question just slipped out as the thought crossed her mind. Setsuna frowned and Sesshomaru stifled a chuckle. He had to admit that he was not expecting that little outburst. "This isn't just about Mating Season, is it?
Setsuna regained her composure. "I'm here as a representative of the court, on order from lady Tsukiko and Lord Kuro of the Southern Lands."
'Lady Tsukiko.' thought Kimara. 'If I recall, that's Sesshomaru's mother.' She could understand why Lord Kuro might've sent her but why did Lady Tsukiko? She'd gotten the impression that she didn't like her too much.
"In order for the courtship between you to be approved, you must endure a trial; a test of your strength. This will test not only your loyalty but your ability to be able to rule next to your Lord if he chooses you."
Sesshomaru interjected before Kimara could give a witty retort. "Leave us, Setsuna."
The princess seemed taken aback by his words but bowed in respect before leaving the study. Sesshomaru could feel the aggravation in the air as it radiated off Kimara in waves. Kimara moved to stand and before she knew it, he was standing before her. Sesshomaru reached out and cupped her chin.
"We have much to discuss, my intended."
And there you have it! The end to another chapter. I have to say again that this, to me, was one of my most disappointing chapters. I'd been so wrapped up I school and my mind was all over the place. The next chapter is already in the works and if you guys have any and I mean anything you wish to happen, don't hesitate to send a review or PM. I promise I don't bite lol.
Take Care and Happy New Year,
