PETERS POV
All of us initiates went back to the dorms before the rankings were announced. Isobel came with me to the transfers dorms to keep me company.
"So, have you started thinking about what you want to be yet?" asked Isobel.
Oh, jobs. I hadn't even begun to think about that yet. "I don't really know," I told her. "But I think... Maybe I could help the leaders? If I get a good enough ranking."
"Oh, I'm sure you will. You did amazing in stage one and then you got through the fear things really well," Isobel said, reassuringly. "I'm probably not going to make it though. I was almost cut by the end of stage one. So I hope you haven't gotten too attached to me," she said, joking at the last part.
I remembered Isobel when we first met. She was covered in bruises and she told me that she couldn't hit people. But I could tell that she was brave. I mean, what kind of person even considers trying to make friends with someone they had barely even talked to before? What person would could put on a brave face through almost anything?
"Isobel, I know that you can't hit anyone but the drunk perverts, but you're no coward," I said.
Isobel smiled, then got a mischievous look in her eye. "OH MY GOSH! WE SHOULD PLAY TRUTH OR DARE!" she practically yelled. All of the other initiates turned to give her a strange look. "Do you want to play?" she asked them.
Oh, I remembered this game! We used to play in Candor. Mostly because of he truths. It usually wasn't very interesting. Dauntless probably played because of the dares.
"Um, what's Truth or Dare?" asked Will.
Isobel walked up to him. "What do you mean 'Whats Truth or Dare?' It's the most amazing awesomeful game ever!" she said, excitedly.
"We found games impractical in Erudite," explained Will.
"Oh! Then I will explain to you children! But first, I'm going to get the Dauntless-borns!" she said and sprinted out of the room. A few minutes later, she came back with the Dauntless-borns, who looked almost as excited as Isobel.
"Okay, gather 'round children!" said Isobel. "So, basically, someone asks you 'Truth or Dare'. If you pick truth, the person gets to ask you about something and you have to answer truthfully. If you pick dare, you have to do whatever the person tells you to. If you refuse to do the truth or the dare, you have to take of a piece of clothing. I also like to call it interrogation or abuse," she finished.
There was a murmur of nervous 'okay's' and then everyone sat in a circle.
"Oh! Oh! Can I go first?" asked one of the Dauntless-borns. He was tall with brown skin and dark eyes. "Sure, Uriah."
"Okay! Okay! I have the perfect one!" he grinned evilly. "You!" he pointed at Will. "What's your name?
"Will,"he said.
"Okay, Will, Truth or Dare?"
"Dare," he said, unfazed by his evil grin.
"Do you have a girlfriend?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Okay, I dare you to go strip down to your underpants and dance around to 'Lady Marmalade' while your girlfriend throws money at you, in the middle of the Pit" said Uriah laughing after he finished.
Will didn't look so confident anymore. His face turned red and he was looking around nervously. Oh this would be good.
"Hey, Will," said Isobel. "You could always back out."
Will sat up straighter. "Never!" he said, letting out a nervous laugh. He got up and the rest of us followed. Uriah handed Christina some cash.
Will and Christina walked into the middle of the Pit and Uriah began to play Lady Marmalade from a speaker that he brought. Will closed his eyes. When he opened them, he had a look on his face that read, 'Why did I agree to this?'
Will tried dancing and Christina threw the money. She was laughing a lot already. Will gave her a glare as his face turned redder than a tomato. All the initiates were laughing their heads off, as was everyone else in the Pit.
After the song finished Will picked up his clothes and ran for it with Christina following him, still throwing money and laughing.
We all walked back to the dorms with tears of laughter running down our faces. It took us all five more minutes to calm down.
"I told you that you could've backed out," said Isobel smiling.
"Okay," Will growled. He looked around for his victim. His eyes landed on me. Oh no. Will was angry and he hated me. This wouldn't turn out well for me. "Truth or Dare?"
"Dare," I said and tried to seem oblivious to his anger and hatred.
"I dare you to play seven minutes in heave with...her" he said, pointing to Isobel. "You can back out if you want to," he said, giving a pointed look to Isobel.
"First off, I thought Erudite didn't play games, second, I have a name! And third, NEVER!" she said, confidently.
"Okay, so what's you name then?"
"Isobel."
"Hey, since when did I consent to this?" I asked, interrupting their little fight.
"You didn't!" said Isobel laughing. She took my hand and pulled me into a closet. I heard a chorus of 'oooooh's' from outside.
"What was-"
"Shh" Isobel cut me off. "I have something awesome. Just make the most obnoxious noises that you possibly can as loudly as you can," she whispered.
I laughed quietly. So we made obnoxious noises and tried not to laugh as we listened to the people outside laughing.
Then, they started to count down. "FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE!" They yelled and flung the door open as we were still making the obnoxious noises. Will looked disappointed.
Isobel and I started laughing as everyone else stared at us in disbelief. A second later, everyone else started laughing.
As we walked out of the closet, Isobel said to Will, "You should see the look on your face right now!" Will rolled his eyes and laughed along with us.
Once everyone calmed down, I looked over at Uriah.
"Truth or Dare?" I asked.
"DARE BITCHES!" he yelled.
"Alright... I dare you to go into the Pit and yell at the top of you lungs 'The baby's coming!"
"I shall do it!" he said and got up. We followed him to the Pit.
"OH! THE BABY'S COMIN'!" he yelled in a high pitched voice. Everyone around him looked at him like he was insane. Uriah walked casually back to us as if nothing had happened.
"Okay, Marlene, Truth or Dare?" he asked a girl with curly, mousy brown hair.
"I'm gonna go with truth," she said.
"What's the weirdest dream that you've ever had?" he asked.
"Oh! This is hilarious! So, I was in and Amity field and a rabbit was chasing me, yelling 'I am your father!' Then, I jumped onto a rainbow and turned into a unicorn!" she finished.
Everyone stared at her, not knowing what to say.
"Ookay... lets move on," said another Dauntless-born.
After a while, most of us were half-naked, Christina had snuck around pretending to be a spy, Drew had a huge mustache drawn on his lip and the guys tried to give a girl, Lynn a makeover, but she ended up looking like a clown. She punched all of the guys afterwards.
Suddenly Eric burst into the room and yelled, "Alright initiates, listen up-" then stopped she he saw us. "What are all of you doing?" he asked.
"We're playing Truth or Dare, a bunch of us said in unison.
"Okay, yeah, whatever, your rankings are going to be announced in fifteen minutes, so look presentable."
Once Eric left, everyone got up and gathered their clothes.
"See, wasn't that fun?" asked Isobel, pulling on her leather jacket.
"Yeah it was," I agreed.
"Ready for the results?" she asked.
"Haha, no," I said.
"I don't think any of us are," she said.
xXx
All of us we standing and taking when we heard the screech of a microphone.
"We aren't big on speeches here. Eloquence is for Erudite," he said. The crowd laughed. "So I'm going to keep this short. It's a new year, and we have a new pack of initiates. And a slightly smaller pack of new members. We offer them our congratulations."
At the word "congratulations" the room erupted, not into applause, but into the pounding of fists on tabletops. Isobel and I glanced at each other, looking for reassurance.
"We believe in bravery. We believe in taking action. We believe in freedom from fear and in acquiring the skills to force the bad out of our world so that the good can prosper and thrive. If you also believe in those things, we welcome you." Yeah right. Like Eric believed in all of that. More pounding fists, this time accompanied by whoops. "Tomorrow, in their first act as members, our top ten initiates will choose their professions, in the order of how they are ranked," Eric says. "The rankings, I know, are what everyone is really waiting for. They are determined by a combination of three scores—the first, from the combat stage of training; the second, from the simulation stage; and the third, from the final examination, the fear landscape. The rankings will appear on the screen behind me."
As soo as he finished, an image flashed on the screen.
A number 1 with Tris' picture and her name under it was at the top.
Then 2, Uriah.
3, Lynn
4, Marlene
5, Peter. It took a second for me to register that I had gotten in. I burst into a smile and Isobel poked me. "Yay! You're in!," she said.
6, Will
7, Christina
8, Isobel. Next to me, Isobel let said, "Oh my gosh! I made it!"
9, Rita. I remembered that her sister died while jumping off a train.
10 was someone named Karen.
"WE MADE IT! OH MY GOSH WE MADE IT!" cried Isobel. She flung her arms around me like Nadia would and gave me the most bone crushing hug that I have ever felt. "We made it!" she yelled again then let go of me. She then proceeded to laugh and cry tears of joy at the same time and then ran to congratulate everyone else.
"Nice job," said a voice sarcastically behind me. I turned to see Molly and Drew, glaring at me.
"Yeah, have fun in Dauntless," said Molly rolling her eyes at me. They both stalked off. They left me after I tried to throw Tris into the Chasm, they weren't my real friends. So why did I feel a little ache in my heart?
"Wait!" I called after them. They turned around and glared at me again. "I'm sorry that you didn't get into Dauntless and I wish you had made it, but please don't be mad at me. It's not my fault that Dauntless cuts people. But can we at least say goodbye? You two were my best friends for a long time, so thank you for that," I said.
They were both silent for a while, then Drew spoke. "I'll miss you," he said.
"Yeah, me too," muttered Molly passively, but I could see tears gleaming in her eyes.
I opened my arms and we all hugged each other, for the first and probably the last time.
After we broke apart, Molly said, "Now go away before I get all sappy and emotional. Eric's rounding all the rejects up anyway. You'd better not become soft, or I'll be disappointed." She laughed a little at the last part. I looked around and saw the to-be Factionless all standing in a group.
"Okay," I forced my words out. "Bye," I said, like I would see them tomorrow.
"Bye," they said to me and slowly walked away.
I took a deep breath and turned away and looked for Isobel.
I saw her congratulating a short girl with black hair, brown skin and dark eyes who I assumed was Karen.
Karen smiled at her and walked away with a bounce in her step.
"Oh hey! I was looking for you!" said Isobel when she spotted me. "Wait, are you okay?' she asked, probably noticing my expression that I was failing to hide. Even though I was now an official Dauntless, I would never be able to completely get rid of my Candor instincts.
"Molly and Drew," was all I said.
"Oh, they're those kinds of friends," she said.
"What do you me 'those kinds of friends?" I asked.
"The friends who aren't really your friends but you've known them for so long that they still feel like your friends," she explained.
"Well that sort of made sense," I said, but her explanation cleared up my thoughts on Molly and Drew.
"You're happy, right?" she asked.
I looked back on the time that I had spent in Dauntless. I remembered all the good and the bad, and I knew that I belonged here.
"Yeah, I'm definitely happy."
